Monumental Impact: A Celebration of Community and Culture in The District
But these court makeovers aren’t one-off moments. Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), the ownership group behind the Washington Wizards and Mystics, has committed to renovating four indoor courts and eight outdoor courts (one in each ward) over the next four years.
“Every refurbished court is a long-term investment in the growth of our city’s young people, giving them a safe place to learn discipline, teamwork, and confidence that will carry well beyond the game,” quoted John Thompson III, SVP of Monumental Basketball, in the 2024-25 District of Play Annual Report.
The Barry Farms renovation also breaks new ground as the first court in the DMV to feature the fire orange WNBA 3-point line, part of the league’s Line ’Em Up initiative. The arc does more than mark distance. It creates equity, giving girls and women undeniable space at the park and honoring the pioneers who built the women’s game.
This is just the latest step in Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Beyond the Baseline movement to ensure every kid in the District has a safe place to play. A 2016 NIH study demonstrates that safe and well-maintained spaces not only uplift communities, they double park visitation and increase local physical activity.
MSE didn’t just honor history. It laid a blueprint for the future.
