The sideline at Tennessee State just got a new voice—one with a Duke pedigree, NBA experience, and a résumé built in some of the country’s most respected programs. Nolan Smith, the former All-American, national championship-winning guard and first-round NBA draft pick, is the new head coach of TSU men’s basketball.

It’s the latest move in a growing trend of former pros and high-profile assistants joining the HBCU coaching ranks. Smith steps into the role after a run as one of the most respected young assistant coaches in the country, with recent stops at Memphis (under Penny Hardaway) and Louisville (under Kenny Payne), and six seasons on Duke’s staff (under Coach K). Known for his player development and mentorship, Smith has helped guide future pros at every stop.

Now, he inherits a TSU program eager to make noise in the Ohio Valley Conference and beyond. His arrival signals ambition—for wins, yes, but also for the cultural and competitive elevation that comes when a coach with his background embraces the HBCU stage.

“First and foremost, I’m ready to give my heart and energy to our players every single day as we prepare to win and proudly represent the university and the state,” Smith says. “I’m excited to immerse myself in the TSU and Nashville community and contribute far beyond the court. I’m built for this challenge, and TSU is built to win. So, let’s win!”
