After three straight wins by at least 20 points, No. 1 Kentucky was supposed to finally be tested against No. 8 Florida on Tuesday night. Instead it was more of the same as the Wildcats dropped the Gators, 78-58.
As usual, Kentucky’s contributions came from all over the place. Leading the team in scoring was sophomore guard Doron Lamb, who had 18 points for the second straight game. Helping out in all ways with 13 points and 13 rebounds was freshman forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
But the biggest impact continues to come from freshman forward Anthony Davis. His stats (16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks) are expected at this point, but the Chicago native’s defensive contribution cannot be understated. Davis makes it nearly impossible to get an uncontested shot off in the lane, one of the reasons why Florida shot just 34.9 percent from the field.
After the game, Davis was talking about a title.
From the Courier-Journal:
“We’re very capable of winning a national championship if we keep playing this way,” he said. “We have this little swagger.”
While Kentucky has been dominant, most of their notable wins have come at home. It will have an opportunity to change that with three of its final six games coming at Vanderbilt, at No. 20 Mississippi State and at Florida.
