You’ve all seen the clip, and know that Gerald Wallace is laid up in the hospital with a partially collapsed left lung plus a broken rib. But, what should the NBA do – if anything – with Andrew Bynum for his role in the play?
For now, they’re mulling over the decision. Reports the LA Times:
The NBA is reviewing the flagrant foul called against Lakers center Andrew Bynum that landed Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace in the hospital to determine if any disciplinary action should be taken.
But league officials said Wednesday that it’s common practice for the NBA to review flagrant fouls. The league could decide to do nothing, or it could fine and suspend Bynum for one game or more without pay.
For what it’s worth, Larry Brown didn’t think the play was necessarily dirty. It’s pretty obvious, however, that Bynum led with his elbow when attempting to stop Wallace’s drive to the tin, and that he didn’t make any sort of play on the ball. In other words, he should face some kind of suspension.
If this was the NBA of yesteryear (not the PG-rated version we see today), Bynum wouldn’t have even gotten a flagrant foul for his troubles, but that’s a story for another time.
