Move Aside, LeBron, Chris Bosh Wants the MVP

by Marcel Mutoni

Chris Bosh has been playing out his mind this season. He’s carried his team virtually every night, while putting up silly numbers - Chris is currently the second leading scorer in the L; he’s shooting over 55% from the field; and he’s ripping down 10 boards per game.

Those are impressive, MVP-type numbers.

Bosh met with the media following the Raptors’ practice yesterday, and the normally modest forward revealed his grandiose plan to claim some hardware once the season comes to an end.

From the Toronto Sun:

“I want to get it. Plain and simple,” Bosh said. “That’s really where I’m at right now. Every game I’m trying to be an MVP-calibre player. I’ve been sharing that with my family, I haven’t shared it with you guys yet but now you know — but I came into this season saying I’m going to give it a shot.”

“I think I can get it. We need more wins of course but when I think of MVPs in the past I think of consistency. Every night they put it out there on the floor and when they need it, they put their teams on their backs. They’re valuable so that’s what I’m trying to be. A valuable asset to this team.”

Bosh may very well win an MVP, but it likely won’t be this season. And it’s not his fault. He’s certainly a good enough player to earn it, but his team won’t get the requisite wins, and there’s a guy in Cleveland playing at an even higher level (with the W’s to back it up.)

Nothing wrong with dreaming big, though.

    Good for Chris.

  • Ken Posted: Nov.28 at 12:11 pm
Bosh has impressed me this year (including the Olympics where he was the leading rebounder). I agree that he won’t get MVP this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he got it sometime before he retires.

  • Zabba Posted: Nov.28 at 12:15 pm
Chris bosh gets those rebounds cause his neck gives him extra 3-4 inches.

  • nastierthanyou Posted: Nov.28 at 12:21 pm
Where are the haters. Please stand up. This is what happens when young talented player spend the time playing on the olympic team with league giants. They see what it takes to be the best and become the best. Always somethin special about the gold medal.

  • neaorin Posted: Nov.28 at 12:21 pm
I really like Bosh and I believe he has a legit shot at the MVP… but doesn’t it bother anyone that he’s pursuing a personal goal instead of putting his team first? Look at Kobe and LeBron, this year both of them are doing less for themselves and more for the guys around them, and their teams are better for it.

  • James aka... Posted: Nov.28 at 12:28 pm
I don’t doubt his team first mentality, in spite of the bravado. When was the last time you saw an NBA player cry due to the frustration of losing? That said, his D can be suspect, so I would hold off on the trophy ceremony. On offence though, he’s ridiculous. I was at the charlotte game 2 nights ago. I would say 6 or 7 times, bosh was left holding the ball 20 feet away from the basket because Sam mitchell’s no motion no imagination offence gave bosh no passing lanes, so Bosh would just can it. I actually though he was going to go for more since he had 32 with 8 minutes left in the third, but he’s as good as vince carter ever was (without the highlight real of course).

  • Samcobillibob Posted: Nov.28 at 12:30 pm
    how do you spell caliber?

  • Joel O's Posted: Nov.28 at 12:31 pm
Beyond the numbers, anyone notice something very different in Bosh’s game, especially around the basket this year? Last year, it seemed to me that when CB4 attacked the basket, he used to be content with drawing the foul and flailing his arms out when he juked his man and got hit by the defender. This year, after getting bumped and shoved while shooting, he seems to… keep trying to will the ball in, whether or not the whistle blows. This increased tenacity has been the big difference, and I’m sure balling with the Olympic team really influenced him. That too-nice-at-times passiveness that really was Bosh’s biggest flaw is gone now. Watch him demand the ball on the low post every single possession. The biggest questions about Bosh - mainly whether he had the mean streak needed to dominate - are long gone now.

  • Krishan Posted: Nov.28 at 12:32 pm
@neaorin: if bosh adopts a selfless mentality, they’ll lose more ballgames. Remember, this is toronto we’re talking about here. You nailed it when you compared him to kobe and lebron, because he is neither. If he doesn’t score bunches and rebound a lot, there won’t be anyway he’ll help a team that specifically needs him for those things. And he’s not garnett either, because he’s not a d*ck.

  • bbaby Posted: Nov.28 at 12:37 pm
who is the better dallas product, deron williams or chris bosh?

  • Roy Posted: Nov.28 at 12:46 pm
That’s good motivation for Chris Bosh anyhow… :D

  • Anton Posted: Nov.28 at 1:08 pm
    CP3 4 MVP

  • neaorin Posted: Nov.28 at 1:13 pm
@Krishan: you’re probably right. Although in the playoffs he’ll be facing elite defenses throwing double teams at him left and right. I’d just hate to see his focus on the MVP prevent him and his team from working on contingency plans which involve him giving up the ball and setting up others. Getting too dependent on one guy doing the scoring is usually poison in the playoffs, just ask my Cavs…

  • what Posted: Nov.28 at 1:18 pm
    He deserves a few votes.

  • Jacob Posted: Nov.28 at 1:30 pm
he deserves it, I hope he gets it

  • Mr. 416 Posted: Nov.28 at 1:49 pm
    CB4 for MVP

  • tealish Posted: Nov.28 at 1:51 pm
But if he wins it, that would mean endless replays on loop up here in Canada of Vince Carter mouthing “MVP? Are you kidding me?” in a Raps-Nets game a couple years back… I can’t have that… thankfully, he won’t win it though.

  • Jackie Moon Posted: Nov.28 at 1:54 pm
I sense a the new scent of hope in the air. Good on Bosh for his setting lofty goals for himself. Yes we can!

  • Jess Posted: Nov.28 at 2:01 pm
If you have followed CB for any length of tiem you will see that he def. wont let his dream for the MVP come before his team. Thats what intereting about the Raps. They arent selfish in any way. CB4 is a team player. @tealish: when Vince said that there was no way that CB would win it, but hey Raps fans are passionate - is he keeps playing the way he is, he will def. be in the conversation at the end..and VC should be the last (well one of the last anyways) to comment on someone having no chance of getting the MVP

  • Exile Posted: Nov.28 at 2:14 pm
Too early to tell… But if the man keeps playing like he has….. Crazy. I know Kobe and Bron are going to make some pretty air-tight cases for themselves, but Bosh is in on almost every play…. Hustling like crazy. Toronto hasn’t seen the likes yet. The league might get a surprise soon too.

  • SWIFTboy Posted: Nov.28 at 2:47 pm
Not this year, though if he keeps it up he’ll get a descent amount of votes. Him thinking this way is a very good hting for the Raptors. Other players saying the same thing could be detrimental for a team, but not with this guy. He’s a team first guy and realizes him getting MVP would require the raptors to get a franchise high in wins. So MVP possibilities and wins go hand-in-hand for Bosh and the Raptors, for better or worse.

  • Josh D Posted: Nov.28 at 2:49 pm
If the Raptors don’t bring in an all star outside of the post, Chris will walk in 2010

  • Z Posted: Nov.28 at 3:41 pm
The Raptors have The worst wings in the L. Parker, Moon, Kapono, Graham? I mean, really?

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.28 at 4:00 pm
They should’ve dealt for A.I. when Denver had him. Maybe take a chance on Steph?

  • lfgkb Posted: Nov.28 at 4:28 pm
    CB4 4 MVP!!!!

  • T. Star Posted: Nov.28 at 4:30 pm
It’s called self-motivation. Whether it happens or not, IMO is not the point. I like that statement from him. I don’t see him getting MVP, but I don’t care. And Chris Bosh definitely has the TEAM in mind no matter what.

  • Exile Posted: Nov.28 at 5:00 pm
If Steph would play the 2…. and be a 2nd and perhaps 3rd option…. (If JO stays healthy).

  • Exile Posted: Nov.28 at 5:01 pm
    BUT…..cancer…..

  • mat smith Posted: Nov.28 at 5:28 pm
maybe dont make that your goal? like TEAM n stuff…. I wanna be MVP!!!! dont remember Steve Nash saying that….

  • Matthew Lopez Posted: Nov.28 at 5:28 pm
i keep sayin this: raps fans, we need a good wing player!i think we should try to get any one of these players:1) Gerald Wallace, he’s a solid defender, and could be the raps 2nd choice on offense, he can also play sg, sf, and pf. 2) Ben Gordon, only as a rent a player for the rest of the season, would knock down open shots, easily would score 17-20 pts in a raps uniform, might defend ai 3) Mike Miller, he isn’t that gr8, but knocks down shots and is a better defender than jk, miller can play both wing positions 4) Corey Maggette, very similar to wallace, but better shooter, can play both wing positions as well 5) this would be a long shot, Caron Butler, all star calibre player. raps fans: if we don’t get 1 or 2 better wing players, we might have another average season, and “hopefully not” cb4 will leave in 2010

  • B. Long Posted: Nov.28 at 6:09 pm
I think Dwight Howard has just as good of a case for it as Chris does.

  • JoeMama Posted: Nov.28 at 7:20 pm
Chris Bosh is da man and i dnt see why he cant win MVP all he has to do is ball up everyday plus when time comes OWN LJ23 block every1 of his fking shots BUT who we kiddin’ its okay tho to dream big haha wordzout

  • JAMS Posted: Nov.28 at 9:45 pm
can someone please do a seperation at birth…… on NBATV, CWebb and Glove talk to Bosh during the preseason. When Bosh appears on screen Gary immediately screams “The Predator!” Lang….anyone who actually read this far down…hook it up

  • RV Posted: Nov.28 at 10:27 pm
just like Kobe got robbed in past years due to the team record, Wade will be robbed this year and it’ll be given to Lebron.

  • Jack Posted: Nov.29 at 4:04 am
    Imagine CB4 with Kenyon Martin’s intensity… Damn… 45 points, 19 rebounds and 8 blocks a game.

  • a_whiteman Posted: Nov.29 at 8:10 am
*looking at his #22 spot in the slam rankings shaking his head in bewilderment*

  • ClydeSays Posted: Nov.29 at 8:50 am
Allow me to translate for Mr. Bosh: “Look, I can see where this Toronto thing is going. JO is hurt. Calderon can’t play d. And if we’re not hitting our three’s Mitchell has no game plan. Like LBJ and Wade, I’m looking forward to 2010. This award will go a long way towards pushing me into the spotlight and getting me the kind of contract I think I deserve. I’d never say this to the press, because I’m not that kind of guy. So you know, when the vote comes up this season, remember me. Thank you very much.”

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Nov.29 at 12:22 pm
    Hes staying.
    so BACK OFF buddy

  • ozziy Posted: Nov.29 at 1:56 pm
if u think that getting mvp is chris bosh’s only goal than how come at the end of the 3rd nba season he was a part of he went back into the raptors locker room crying, u wanna kno why? because hes main goal is to make this raptor team a contender, and if chris bosh sets his mind on being an mvp calibur player it will rub off, dunt think of this as bosh being a self centered jerk, by saying things like this it shows how much he wants to win and that’ll rub off on his team mates…chris bosh has been taring the league apart and as long as he does that for the rest of the season i dunt see anyr eason y he wont get votes for mvp come this april

  • Brar Posted: Nov.29 at 2:48 pm
Bosh is averaging more ppg than Lebron right now

  • Gaz Posted: Nov.29 at 5:55 pm
Yeah and the Bobcats want to make the Play-offs…
And BETCATS wants to kiss a girl…
    DREAM ON GUYS!!!

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Nov.30 at 9:20 am
clyde, Bosh could not play another game from now till 2010, hes still going to get a max contract from who ever he (re)signs with.

  • MeloMan13 Posted: Nov.30 at 11:19 am
tell me if this is a good idea: Raptors trade Andrea Bargnani for Marvin Williams?? raptors get a athletic wing tht can defend and score, hawks get a versitile big to play wit al horford.

  • Hursty Posted: Nov.30 at 2:37 pm
Jeez Gaz. Give it a rest.

  • Quail Posted: Nov.30 at 7:26 pm
    i applaud u, Christopher Bosh… i applaud u.

    Good Luck

  • chintao Posted: Dec.1 at 1:25 am
@ Jack Nov.29 at 4:04 am ==> To me, that has been the biggest difference in Bosh this year. He looks much more intense. I don’t know if it’s “K-Mart” intense, but he Bosh seems very driven on every play.

  • Gaz Posted: Dec.1 at 4:37 am
and Hursty wants Sydney to be as great as Melbourne….
