Mark Cuban: Everyone Hated Avery Johnson’s Guts

by Marcel Mutoni

It’d be hard for a coach to get through to his players once they tune him out; harder still if they flat-out refused to play should the team continue to gainfully employ him.

Ladies and germs, welcome to Avery Johnson’s life.

Mark Cuban revealed his reason for firing Johnson a few months ago to reporters yesterday at Media Day. From the Dallas Morning News:

“I knew after I had so many people asking to be traded,” Cuban said. “I mean, I had to deal with either the players and moving them or the coach and moving him.”

When asked if more than five players requested a trade, Cuban said yes. More than seven? “Close,” Cuban said.

Wow, you know you’re doing something wrong when nearly half the team asks to be traded because of you.

By default, Rick Carlisle immediately becomes one of the most popular people in the Dallas locker room. Not too shabby of a deal for the new coach.

    was it the voice?

  • Allenp Posted: Sep.30 at 11:08 am
Dallas had some good team success under Avery and I think he’ll be good in another location. He was trying to work around a star player that doesn’t defend and doesn’t really lead. Plus, your best player is mentally fragile. Avery had some flaws, his predilection for one-on-one offense was a problem, but mainly I think that after a while he couldn’t coexist with the players Cuban brought in.

  • jay Posted: Sep.30 at 11:10 am
    Avery is gangsta.

  • Nguni Posted: Sep.30 at 11:14 am
agree with you Allenp. They played defense when avery got there and that took them to the finals. But wit No-Win-tzki having no heart, the downward spiral became inevitable.

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
    Shaun Livingston to the Heat!!!!

  • Flash Posted: Sep.30 at 11:20 am
its not no-win-tzki’s fault, they just ran into the flash!

  • riggs Posted: Sep.30 at 11:23 am
but without coach avery, how would they have faired during the season?

  • GermanMavsFan Posted: Sep.30 at 11:25 am
since when does winning 66 or 67 (lol) games in a season make you No-win-tzki ARSE!

  • Sparker Posted: Sep.30 at 11:32 am
(sound of air escaping after punch to gut)

  • mat smith Posted: Sep.30 at 11:38 am
I allways thought “birdhouse” was a good coach, and who listens to NBA players anyway? except for maybe Nash they all seem to speak rubbish

  • BETCATS Posted: Sep.30 at 11:40 am
    playa hatas

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 11:42 am
I don’t believe that bullsh!t for a second. The only player that more than likely asked to be traded was Josh Howard, who has had one foot out the door since they traded Marquis Daniels and has been basicly doing everything humanly possible to cause PR nightmares for Cubes since they traded Dash. Cubes is just trying to cover his ass for when the Mavs miss the playoffs and Avery gets a new gig and does well. And we all know that Avery was never a big Dirk fan and Cubes would obviously sacrifice his first born before trading him. Just another reason why Mark is the best/worst owner in the NBA.

  • Keith Posted: Sep.30 at 11:45 am
Rumours that Avery Johnson and Larry Brown are half-brothers have been dismissed.

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 11:59 am
    My name is orange today.

  • Keith Posted: Sep.30 at 12:04 pm
Orange or not B.Long, you are still feared around these parts.

  • TADOne Posted: Sep.30 at 12:05 pm
Yeah, Cuban would hold so much leverage making up a story like that.

  • bobby Posted: Sep.30 at 12:07 pm
Brandon Bass, most improved player 2008-09

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.30 at 12:43 pm
So let the guessing begin… I’m almost positive that Kidd, Howard, and Stackhouse were complaining their brains out about Avery. So three others? Lemme take Brandon Bass… Green cause he wasn’t getting any playing time… and Barea, cause that dude just looks feisty.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Sep.30 at 12:44 pm
I wondered about that at the time after his firing. A coach having such success in a short timeframe but lacking offers afterwards? Now we know why.

  • k.o. Posted: Sep.30 at 12:47 pm
When you’re a billionaire its ok to call yourself ‘everyone’

  • tinchek Posted: Sep.30 at 1:03 pm
i want to have an orange name too

  • B. Long Posted: Sep.30 at 1:09 pm
@Jukai:Gerald Green wasn’t on the Mavs last year. But I’m sure that he would have hated a coach who made him bend his knees on defense too. Just like the rest of the Mavs. Avery probably waterboarded Dirk.

  • Jukai Posted: Sep.30 at 1:20 pm
BLong: Guess I just remembered him failing in the summer leagues, my bad

  • Kevin Wilson Posted: Sep.30 at 1:25 pm
Fill in the Website slot, tinchek.

  • Mark Z Posted: Sep.30 at 1:27 pm
Well, going from Nellie & Nash’s free flowing offense to Avery’s offense can’t be easy. But Cuban made the change for a reason. Dallas wasn’t going anywhere not playing D. Don’t blame Mr. Johnson. Blame the players for only wanting to play one end of the floor.

  • Allenp Posted: Sep.30 at 1:36 pm
I doubt Brandon Bass or Stackhouse complained. Bass had a career resurgence under Avery; he was almost out of the league after Byron Scott bad mouthed him. Stackhouse had a simliar resurgence thanks to Avery making him the featured player off the bench. I think Devin Harris complained and I think Dirk complained.

  • what Posted: Sep.30 at 1:56 pm
I have a feeling this is the first time in his life Rick Carlisle has been popular.

  • Nguni Posted: Sep.30 at 2:34 pm
rick better deliver, and this year, otherwise no-win-tzi and his boss gon start blaming him… Love the mavs, but can’t depend on their heart till they prove me wrong.

  • aotearaw Posted: Sep.30 at 5:05 pm
I’d imagine having to put up with his voice alone would warrant trade demands after a while….

  • vegas Posted: Sep.30 at 5:39 pm
SCREW CUBAN! Avery was the bomb

  • vegas Posted: Sep.30 at 5:39 pm
SCREW CUBAN! Avery was the bomb

  • ryan Posted: Sep.30 at 5:57 pm
Rick Carlisle was a good coach for the Pistons, yet was very stubborn and not exactly a “players” coach. This could be a problem for the Mavs as well, but the good thing is that Rick can do the X’s and O’s stuff pretty decently and knows the importance of defense

  • Moose Posted: Sep.30 at 6:03 pm
The headline should be: (Insert anybody here): Everybody Hates Mark Cuban’s Guts.

  • MyKal Posted: Sep.30 at 6:12 pm
Damn, Moose, you get around! I agree with airs way up there at the top of the comments section. Avery had one freaky-@ss voice.

  • Moose Posted: Sep.30 at 6:19 pm
MyKal, I just hate on Cuban, Odom, Ben Gordon, and sometimes Kobe Bryant and Stephon Marbury. That’s really it. But right now, that’s all that Slam is posting about, so it seems like I’m a hater.

  • Austin Posted: Sep.30 at 6:22 pm
I have to agree with most of the comments made on here so far. It was foolish to drop a great coach when you have a bunch of whiny players asking to get out of town. Next time, hire a team with a little grit and heart. Sounds more to me like a team of whiners than a problem with the head coach.

  • mitch Posted: Sep.30 at 7:57 pm
what ever team he goes to they will start winning more or less games

  • T WANA Posted: Sep.30 at 9:17 pm
To me it wasn’t aj’s bad coaching well thats one them but it was mainly no-win nowitzki (yeah thats right im hat’n on no-win-ski)It was no-win’s lack of heart that made the mavs from a championship contender to not even making the play-offs. Tell why the mavs traded a good young player(Devin Harris) to the nets for that geizure(jason kidd) only averaging 8.6 points per game, but hey the got a heck of a deal, I bet you thay gon make to the playoffs even without jefferson(traded to the bucks)

  • CP34MVP Posted: Sep.30 at 11:24 pm
Is Avery Hired on a different team yet? I thought he should go 2 the Pistons

  • K-Dawgg Posted: Sep.30 at 11:41 pm
This is rediculous, typical Cuban *ish. I don’t buy this BS. I have never heard of 7 players wishing to be traded away from a 67 win finals making team. Just an excuse to fire Avery and hire a different coach to make a move.

  • Tripset30 Posted: Sep.30 at 11:42 pm
Is it just my imagination or is SLAM on a Mavs’ binge? I, for one, love the attention. I think Avery started out as a player’s coach but morphed into a demanding SOB, and while it’s good to see a coach exercise the whip ala Bobby Knight sometimes, that stuff usually doesn’t work in the NBA. Johnson may be better suited as a college coach rather than an NBA one, as he the “build you up/break you down mentality” works better in those ranks.
Hopefully Carlisle can run a more laissez-faire operation in Dallas and they can re-discover the offense pop from the old days. And, seriously guys… No-Win-Zki? What about Le-”Bronze” or Car-Melt-o? Or A.Ican’teven buyachampionship? Last I checked Dirk has been closer than any of those three guys.

  • Tripset30 Posted: Sep.30 at 11:48 pm
Six players: Erick Dampier, Josh Howard, Brandon Bass, probably Maurice Ager (good move), Devean George (but he got traded to the wrong team), and Jamaal Magloire (makes sense, on a team with no depth inside he can’t make it on the court).

  • corey Posted: Oct.1 at 6:50 am
i think avery johnson is not at fault and this is typical immaturity from nba players. it could have a lot to do with eddie jones starting over stackhouse and terry for more than half the season. it could have a lot to do with johnson calling out dirk for his lack of leadership. and it could have a lot to do with him running his offense and not letting players do whatever they want on the court.

  • iLL 949 Posted: Oct.1 at 9:57 am
“what ever team he goes to they will start winning more or less games ” WOW…REALLLY??? HOWD YOU FIGURE THAT OUT?!

  • ciolkstar Posted: Oct.1 at 6:11 pm
    Avery’s voice is REALLY annoying

  • Pistons Lover Posted: Oct.1 at 6:30 pm
Mark Cuban just mad cause Avery was going to beat his natural ass. Avery ain’t for no games. He will cuss anyone out and don’t care who it is. Mark gotta understand everyone hates his guts. The punk bastard!

  • Darksaber Posted: Oct.1 at 9:01 pm
Interesting situation though. Avery WAS an important player in his day, especially with the Spurs team that won the 1st championship with Duncan and the Admiral. And that’s where the General moniker was created. But as a former player, PG especially, i wouldn’t have expected him to mess up player-coach relations so badly. Surely he of all people would know not to micromanage experienced NBA players? My theory is he hasn’t been away from playing long enough. he could probably still be a capable backup PG on a number of teams, and so he’s not detached enough from the team. In his heart, Avery thinks he could do it better than the players he’s bossing around, and so he just tried to do too much… Bet even his many (experienced) assistants couldn’t stand him . Sad, that team had it’s best seasons under him, and STILL wanted him gone. Well Rick, enjoy the calm before the storm.

Lest anyone forget,Cuban is very media saavy and a help of a spin doctor in his own right. One thing he doesn’t seem to be is tactful…
