Tyreke Evans in Prime Time

A very brief update on SLAM’s HS Diary keeper.

Those of you who still read the quaint, old-fashioned print version of the magazine that this website is based on should be aware that, since its earliest days, SLAM has featured a monthly Basketball Diary written by a top high school basketball player. This year’s Diary keeper is Tyreke Evans. He’s arguably the best player in the Class of 2008. He’s also got a lot going on in his life.

By any defintion, Reke’s had a hell of a year: Off-court drama, family loss, injuries, and of course, ridiculous amounts of pressure and attention when he’s got the ball in his hands. Mostly, he’s handled it impressively, especially on the court.

Anyway, Reke’s gonna be on TV tonight, leading his American Christian squad against St. Anthony of New Jersey, which is ranked No. 1 in the country. Game time is 9 pm. Eastern on that one cable network that has lots of sports. Do check it out.

ESPN, TAD. Thanks, Ryan. I think it’s fair to say Reke was the right choice for the Diary this year.

Sarcasm Ben. I just wanted to see someone type those letters on here :)

I’m not sure if anyone had mentioned this yet but Reke must be the most normal person ever to do the Diary, well since I’ve been reading.

did he pick Louisville? I hope he chooses UConn!!

  • Free Vick Posted: Feb.21 at 6:50 pm
If I watch the game Will Tyreke and his fam shoot me?

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.21 at 6:53 pm
    We can hope.

Evans was a good call. I’m pulling for Lance for the next shot.

  • DP Posted: Feb.21 at 11:26 pm
Everyone knows you guys are giving it to Lance next. Who else? Renardo Sidney? nah don’t put him in it. Reke hasn’t really had a good game now that I am watching. Shooting too many threes. play wit it.

This American Christian team, while athletic (especially defensively) and quick, they have not run one set play/pick-n-roll/give and go, and anything remotely team basketball. This 4th quarter has been brutal. I doubt there is nary an assist in the bunch. Tyreke looks good, although he isn’t really hitting tonight, but this type of basketball is making me ill. Too bad that St. Anthony’s isn’t just punishing them, but again, see the aforementioned defensive ability.

I have literally NO idea who our next Diary keeper will be, but I will say this: Historically, we tend to mix it up regionally year by year. Including Tyreke, our last four Diarists have been from (in order) Pennsylvania, Oregon, Tennessee, and Michigan. Also, we’ve already done TWO players from Lincoln HS. Take that for what you will.
And Cub, yeah, it wasn’t pretty. That was one great player (and a couple of good ones) against a very well-coached and polished squad. I didn’t even bother watching the second half.

I am pulling for Jymycal Green.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.22 at 1:28 pm
It was filled with steals and one-on-one jacked-up three-pointers! Wonder if AC has any kind of motion offense, or if they have ever been spoken to about playing TOGETHER! The prep game is historically one of the last bastions of that type of hoop, not last night.

From the parts of the game I saw, it looked like the kids were trying to “get theirs” with the ESPN cameras rolling. All I saw was 1 pass, then shoot.

Still laughing at Ryan’s comment to freevick. That was not Reke’s best game, by any stretch, but he has been a great diary keeper. Ryan and I started discussing next year’s on Friday and I think we’ve got a nice one in mind.
