Stephon Marbury is the good kind of crazy

Give the man another TV show

By Sam Rubenstein

No time for small talk, let’s get right into it. Stephon Marbury was a guest on Mike’d Up last night. If you are not familiar with the show, it’s Mike Francessa of Mike and the Mad Dog fame’s Sunday night TV show. Mike wasn’t there, which is unfortunate because he is the star of the show. Bruce Beck does a credible job of filling in, but he’s more of a traditional talking head sports news guy than a smug fan-baiting villain like Mike. Anyways, none of that matters. Stephon Marbury was on the show, and it was bananas.

If I had to compare Steph’s performance to another person, it would be Tracy Jordan from 30 Rock. Not Tracy Morgan, the actor who plays him. He’s too sane. I’m talking about the stabbing robot himself, the character on the show. Steph is out of his mind. The surly Marbury was nowhere to be seen.

He answered questions with rambling non-sequiters. He received a phone call from his wife during the show and he started talking on his cell. He yelled over the host’s voice when he was trying to read highlights. He got all emotional talking about KG. He refused to answer some questions and acted like he was really offended that the host would put him on the spot. He said he might average 12 dimes and 2 assists whatever that’s supposed to mean. He said the Knicks can win the trophy this year, but he doesn’t play for trophies even though that’s what it’s all about, he just plays to win. I have no idea what any of that means. If you are confused, then I am doing my job well conveying this info to you.

I’m telling you, this interview was on the level of Danny Devito’s sloppy drunk appearance on The View. It was like when Courtney Love would basically OD and then do interviews. Perhaps Stephon is just high on life. Either way, it was an uncomfortable and amazing moment in time. Here is one summary, and here is the TV show’s home page. Since Francessa wasn’t the host, I don’t know how hard they will try to post video of it. But this is bonus Marbury madness from a charity event over the weekend. Jordanesque. Tracy Jordan.

Bravo. BRAVO!!!

I’m out on vacation all next week, so that means there are a hundred billion things I have to get done before I go. Writing posts is the most fun and creatively fulfilling part of my job, but that has to take a backseat to other responsibilities. I was in Boston over the weekend, where I picked up a little present for Khalid. Hopefully he doesn’t come in too early today, because part of giving him the gift involves vandalizing his computer. If he reads this before I see him, oh well I’ll just hand him the gift. Other important news from over the weekend is the Nets signing Vince Carter to a huge deal, which means they were satisfied with the effort he put forth this past season, and they are comfortable with the highs and lows that come with Vinsanity. Now he’s got $60 mill guaranteed. I am sure he will bring it every night to justify such a lavish contract.

If anyone has more on Steph’s TV appearances over the weekend, please don’t be shy. Share with your community.

If only I could somehow watch American tv shows…cause this sounds hilarious. Good ol’ Steph. I thought he had a lost it when he said that Zach Randolph coming to NY was part of “God’s plan” or something like that. Isiah = God?? Is that what Steph was saying. Who knows.

  • Adrian Posted: Jul.2 at 8:57 am
    Younger youthier player…..all class

  • Goody Posted: Jul.2 at 8:58 am
Black people are spiritually sound. God is always first. Try it and see the results.

  • Goody Posted: Jul.2 at 8:59 am
Always like to read your stories Sam….

  • Cheryl Posted: Jul.2 at 9:01 am
I’m so glad the Knicks got “youthier” with Zach. Hilarious!

  • John Posted: Jul.2 at 9:06 am
This team isn’t winning more than 40 games. Isiah shows yet again that he doesn’t understand the consept of team chemistry. The roster last season was also very talented last year, but they didn’t complement each other at all hence the 49 losses. Curry and Randolph both need the ball in their hands to be effective, and now they both won’t have the ball in they’re hands. I guess we’ll see. Boston and NY will battle it out for third in the Atlantic behind NF and Toronto.

Its still early let some more things unfold first. Like Cheryl said they are more youthful and that takes maturity.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah Posted: Jul.2 at 9:22 am
It truly is a great time for being a Knicks fan. Z-Bo AND Marbury? Good God. Or Isiah.

  • Jake Posted: Jul.2 at 9:27 am
I love this guy! It’s about time people stopped thinking of Steph as the selfish pretty boy and start recognizing Stephon as the insane dude that he is. I’ve spoken with him before and I’d say he’s like a cross between Gilbert Arenas, the RZA, and Oprah.

  • Esco Posted: Jul.2 at 9:47 am
What I wanna share is about the Quai 54 streetball tourney that took place this weekend in Paris. Sh*t was bananas!!! Please tell me ya’ll know of this!!!!

  • Ben Collins Posted: Jul.2 at 10:13 am
I AM A STABBING ROBOT. I WILL STAB YOU.

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jul.2 at 10:17 am
The manatee has become the mento.

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jul.2 at 10:21 am
And for the record, I’m on vacation this week, or else I would have called Steph’s cell phone last night, too.

  • Cheryl Posted: Jul.2 at 10:30 am
what, to tell him to take it down a notch?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Jul.2 at 10:59 am
Did anyone else notice that Steph mentioned he would like the Knicks to become a team like the Mavs? Does he mean he would like the Knicks to be a good regular season team? Or that he would prefer them to be a perenial playoff team of chokers? He really was out of his mind to use that team of girls to use as a role-model. Steph, stick to shoe-making, not prognosticating? It really is good to be crazy!

  • Shiny Stuff Posted: Jul.2 at 11:21 am
Hey Lang, The manatee has become…a breath mint? Steph’s off the charts!

  • James Posted: Jul.2 at 11:23 am
I have and do “try it” Goody. But thanks for the advice.

  • James Posted: Jul.2 at 11:24 am
ESCO! I’ve heard of that - some quality ballers play there. Theres usually a UK team entered. I read about it on streetball.co.uk

  • noah b Posted: Jul.2 at 11:29 am
i actually thought steph was totally out of his mind in not a good way. i think he was so prickly because he’s trying to spin everything positive all the time now. he has become as much a politician as a bball player. he’s learned from isiah how to always be promoting the positive. the problem is, they are both in denial. stephon made sure everyone knew that it was his wife on the phone(who knows if it really was.) you know he went on the show with the stipulation that there be no questions regarding the recent sex charges against him. he wants to act like the only thing going on is the knicks getting a great big man and his own charity work in brooklyn. the reality is much darker. the knicks got a kid with a serious history of guns and violence, and stephon is in the middle of some pretty disturbing allegations himself. on top of all that, marbury has the audacity and stupidity to talk about “stealing a trophy” when he has shown time and time again that he doesn’t have a clue as to what it takes to win or even sneak into the playoffs. i have been rooting for steph ever since his lincoln days, but he has shown over time that he is a bit of a village idiot. what he’s doing for the kids is tremendous, but let’s face it– if he was a winning all-star point guard, and not a losing overhyped, overpaid point guard– he would probably be with nike, selling hundred dollar shoes with steve nash and the rest of the great players in the nba.

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: Jul.2 at 12:07 pm
Thanks Goody. But really thank you Stephon. Seriously, that youtube clip is funny, but the Mike’d up stuff was just unreal. He made no sense. He said he didn’t care that Isiah played basketball, he just loves him like a father. And he went on a long-winded thing about how great the Mavs are and how he wanted that to be what the KNicks are but it didn’t matter cause they lost… just thinking about it is confusing. It was really weird.

  • Esco Posted: Jul.2 at 12:11 pm
JAMES!!! It was the sh*t!!!! A team from NY won it all this year, the other team in the finals was captained by Yakouba Diawara who plays for the Nuggets…he was beastin’!!! And there was this kid who won the dunking contest…it was like an NBA Street Vol. sumtin dunking contest…that kid was going bananas!!! Through the leg…OVER TWO GUYS?????? WTF!!!

  • Esco Posted: Jul.2 at 12:19 pm
Let me put it this way…his first dunk was a simple through the legs after throwing the ball to himself off the ground. After he did that, one of the dunkers turned around and told us (yeah, we were courtside…BALLIN’) “WTF?? That was what I was planning on pulling off as my final dunk and he does it as his first???”…The kid just got better from there…pulling off behind the back dunks…Windmills over like 63725 people…and then the through the legs over all the other dunkers’ families and mines. It was crazy…All in all a day well spent. From 12 pm til 11 pm…wonderful!!!

  • Jason Posted: Jul.2 at 12:36 pm
Wow noah. If you’ve been rooting for Steph like you say you have since his Lincoln days, you’d know that he was doing charity work even when he was considered one of the top point guards in the league. I know for a fact that this isn’t the first time Steph has donated money to NYC teachers because I stood next to him at a rally for NYC public school teachers. He didn’t just write a check, he rallied and spoke on our behalf. This was in ‘03, long before the sneakers, etc. Since you compare him to a politician, I’m sure you know that he’s created more jobs for people in his community in the last 10 years than the politicians elected to do so.

  • John from Miami Posted: Jul.2 at 12:41 pm
they got a “youthier” player within Zach Randolph, lmao, he says it when there are 11 seconds left in the video. He should thank God he knows how to put a ball in a hoop, if not he’d probably be flipping burgers :D

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Jul.2 at 12:46 pm
Is this the time to officially start worrying about a player with a rumored alcohol problem? I mean, I’m not saying which player that is, but…

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: Jul.2 at 12:54 pm
You can’t put a price on paragraphs like these. From today’s NYPost:
Randolph will take a physical today to finalize the deal. He’ll then hold a press conference at the Knicks’ Westchester facility where he’ll be asked multiple times to explain his vast criminal record dating to high school that includes charges of battery, shoplifting, sexual assault, driving under the influence of marijuana and gun possession. Randolph also will be asked whether his notorious posse, Hoop Family, will move to New York with him. According to an Oregonian columnist, Randolph’s Portland posse were overheard shouting angrily when the trade was announced Thursday night.

  • Reggie Evans Posted: Jul.2 at 12:57 pm
    Hey Paula!

  • RV Posted: Jul.2 at 12:59 pm
i’m more worried about stephon having trouble remembering Zach’s name, its like he paused to remember and threw in some other youthier BS to allow him time to recall who he was talking about..

  • Cheryl Posted: Jul.2 at 1:01 pm
Whoo boy, the Knicks are gonna be a fun team to watch… off the court. –ASPOV

  • AB_40 Posted: Jul.2 at 1:39 pm
eddy curry, david lee, jamal crawford and jared jeffries for KG… I don’t care about upside and all that BS if they wanna win now and put people in the stands and of course KG and steph on one court they shoud try to pull this of, the salaries match… I checked on realgm maybe you could add another first round pick on 09 if you’re the knicks you know.

  • nexus6 Posted: Jul.2 at 1:40 pm
damn esco.i wish i could have been there…..

  • bobby stew Posted: Jul.2 at 2:34 pm
Something is strange about the knicks. They remind me of when I used to create a team on NBA Live 96. It looks great on paper but I wonder about the real life chemistry. Crawford, Marbury, Nate, Curry, Lee, Randolph. That’s alot of people who need the ball. Which one of those guys is a true team player? They need some Fischer’s or Battier’s on this team. They actually have to many ballers. This is one of those teams that if someone gets injured they may actually be a better team for it. They will make the playoffs, barely. Most entertaining team in the league.

  • noah b Posted: Jul.2 at 2:58 pm
hey jason. the charity work steph does, and has always done, is great. fair enough. i wont question his sneaker line again. i’m just saying– for a guy who is trying to position himself as a spokesman and role model for kids– stephon marbury has a lot of growing up to do himself. you can’t go around calling women “black bitches” and be a great role model for kids.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jul.2 at 3:13 pm
    Z-Bo has great second felonyability.

  • Slobodan Chutzpah Posted: Jul.2 at 3:22 pm
    Z-Bo is talented.

  • Mark Posted: Jul.2 at 3:54 pm
I saw that last night and it was so funny. he had to be drunk or something! Can someone please get this video online?

  • John Posted: Jul.2 at 4:14 pm
    a younger “youthier” player..
    zach randloph = youthy

  • WeS Posted: Jul.2 at 5:34 pm
This is like seeing the storm roll in off the shore… You cant do anything to stop it. Knicks fans have to decide whether to stick it out through all the police reports, or finally abandon their house. I can almost guarantee that Zach and EC HATE each other by midseason…

  • nothin _personal Posted: Jul.2 at 6:12 pm
I am gonna say it once more: Artest to the Knicks!
Make it happen, Isiah! He is a New York guy, too!

  • Mo Charlo Posted: Jul.2 at 9:17 pm
“I believe there are 31 letters in the white alphabet. I believe that vampires are the world’s greatest golfers, but their curse is they don’t get to prove it. I believe the moon doesn’t exist. What was the question?”
    -Tracy “Starbury” Jordan

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Jul.2 at 9:40 pm
Between Hoop Family and the Marburys, I believe every ‘07-08 Knick game is now sold out.

  • James Posted: Jul.3 at 4:10 am

I’m dying laughing at all this. Thanks some much for posting!

dat interview was wierd..but I loved steph since lincon high…i feel wit this acquition we and no crucial injuries like last year (would have been 7th or 8th seed) we will see knicks at 6th seed in the playoffs!!!

  • val st clair Posted: Jul.6 at 8:10 am
steph has really brought into isiah’s “masterplan” without even analyzing the knicks many flaws… maybe he doesn,t even have the capacity to… this borders on insanity…WOW

  • annnoy Posted: Jul.7 at 12:19 am
and to think, when Steph came to play for the Knicks in ‘04, I had the nerve to call him Stephon Godbury because I felt he was our knicks savior–the God of the Knicks. Oh, what the heck, I’ll start calling him Godbury, again. Besides, he’s sure playing like Starbury, again. Steph rocks.

Can he play for Italy THIS YEAR, and can we bring back “Number twenty one….CHAAAAAARRRRR LEEEEEEEEE WARD!!” ?
