SLAMonline Top 50: Carmelo Anthony, no. 13

The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…

by Lang Whitaker

Early on the morning of the 2003 NBA Draft, a group of us from SLAM had breakfast with Carmelo Anthony. I’d already been in touch with Melo’s people, lining up Melo to be our SLAM Rookie Diary keeper, and Melo’s people thought it would be a good idea for Melo to meet me face-to-face, as I was going to be harassing him for the next year trying to get him on the phone over and over to dictate his diary entries. I invited along all the SLAM crew, and we met with Melo early on the morning of the Draft in the Don Shula’s Steakhouse, which was in the lobby of the hotel where the NBA Draftees were staying.

What followed was one of the more awkward meals I’ve ever been a part of. We met early, and when Melo and his agent and marketing people showed up, Melo looked like he hadn’t gotten much sleep the night before — he was probably up all night thinking, Does Joe Dumars really think Darko is going to be better than me? So Melo was sleepy and grumpy and obtuse, and then once we all sat down and ordered, talk turned to the diary, which took me about 30 seconds to explain and Melo to nod his agreement to, and then there was nothing to talk about for the next hour. So we all sat there in uncomfortable silence. (Ryan and Russ can attest to this.)

That was my first experience with Melo, and it came close to scaring me off of doing the diary all season: Dude didn’t speak five words all morning, how was he going to fill a diary every month with, you know, words?

Ever since that day, I haven’t seen that Carmelo Anthony again. These days he’s personable, funny, outgoing (he still emails me out of the blue to check in). I don’t know if that morning was a test or an aberration or what, but to me Carmelo Anthony is a just a normal guy, a regular kid (remember, he just turned 24) who is really, really, really good at basketball.

These days, whenever Carmelo’s name makes the mainstream media it’s usually with some negative connotation: speeding tickets, weed on a plane, knocking out Mardy Collins, etc. If Melo extinguished a fire at the Vatican, the headlines would probably read: Carmelo Throws Water On Pope!

There are guys who are trouble, and then there are guys who seem to not be able to escape trouble, no matter what they do, and that’s been Melo’s fate in his first five NBA seasons. Which is a shame because he’s not only a good person, but he’s a helluva basketball player. Last season, Melo finished fourth in the League in points per game (25.7 ppg — low for him, his lowest ppg in the last three seasons). He also averaged 7.5 rebounds per game and, surprisingly, was 25th in the L in steals per game.

That last stat is something of a surprise because steals are a defensive category, and Melo has never been much of a defensive player. This has been the knock against him, the easy way to denigrate his game. Of course, criticizing a George Karl player for not playing defense is like saying a Mike D’Antoni player shoots too many ill-advised shots. George Karl either doesn’t stress defense or he doesn’t care about it, and as a result Melo is both demonized and blamed for this.

To me, it’s not Melo’s fault as must as it is the Nuggets’ fault. You’ve got a scorer — a world-class scorer — so surround him with defenders and then feed him and fan him; don’t put Allen Iverson next to him and give away your best defender, Marcus Camby. For Carmelo Anthony to win a chip, he doesn’t need to be on a team that scores a lot of points, he needs to be on a solid, well-rounded basketball team.

Regardless, Melo’s improved his outside shooting and midrange game to the point where nobody questions his regular inclusion in the All-Star Game anymore. Everyone knows Melo is one of the best players in the NBA.

Mostly, I think, people just wonder what in the world the front office in Denver is thinking.

And I have no idea.

hursty you f@cker! ranked too high but i am looking forward to the comments

  • Hursty Posted: Oct.13 at 8:05 am
Nobody knows what the Denver front office is thinking Lang. NBA live steals.

  • Hursty Posted: Oct.13 at 8:06 am
Bahaha, Im sneaky like that Michael.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Oct.13 at 8:11 am
i used to love melo & the nuggets, but then i grew up,kinda. Still is a good player though

  • Hursty Posted: Oct.13 at 8:12 am
Ok, Hursty out. Have a good one fellas.

  • Big Sia Posted: Oct.13 at 8:14 am
Melo over Yao… First of all, VC > Melo. Nevermind the other 8 billion players who got rated lower than this guy. Although im all for the stop snitching movement

  • Big Sia Posted: Oct.13 at 8:14 am
And Hursty, if you woke up just for first, thats pretty soft man

  • Niio Posted: Oct.13 at 8:16 am
I just don’t know about ‘Melo, because he just doesn’t do it night in and night out. But when he is motivated he is a top 5 player in the NBA. Post him up more Karl so he can use his size and speed advantages!

  • Darksaber Posted: Oct.13 at 8:17 am
umm, melo this high? H.E.L.L naww.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Oct.13 at 8:19 am
sia, answering on behalf of my compatriot, its 11:19 pm here in Aus

  • aska Posted: Oct.13 at 8:30 am
uh, how can he better than AI, who led the team last year in socring assists and steals? Weird. AI should’ve been Top 10.

  • andrew Posted: Oct.13 at 8:30 am
Perfectly summarised, Lang. Great post. The pope bit had me chortling. Yes. Chortling.

  • Bryan Posted: Oct.13 at 8:37 am
Can’t disagree here. I actually thought he’d be higher. I thought he was really overrated until last season now I respect him a little more. He’s better than some people (dirk) that are gonna come after him.

  • homeboy Posted: Oct.13 at 8:44 am
hey you cant hate where melo is. this man is one of the most versitile men in this league. he can got long range along with the mid range shot (one of the more lost arts in the nba) or he got the post up game. he can probably play about three or four spots. and he aint soft like some players (dirk) like homie said

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.13 at 9:01 am
I don’t know about his place on the list, but there is one thing Melo is second to none with and that’s his jab step set up into his quick jumper. That sh*t is unstoppable.

  • Funkdoc Posted: Oct.13 at 9:01 am
This is hard to say. I think the reason a lot of people think he doesn’t deserve this ranking is because of his lack of defense. Okay, some people are defensive minded, some people not. But I wanna see Melo in a Doc Rivers or Popovich system and see how that works out. Until then, I can nothing but hate George Karl. And btw, which team would be better: nuggs without Al or nuggs without Anthony. I think the first one.

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.13 at 9:03 am
This is about right. No issues.

  • homeboy Posted: Oct.13 at 9:06 am
yo all them nuggets need is a couple of role players that can play defence. forget getting rid of AI or melo all you need is a couple players like bruce bowen or MARCUS CAMBY who can pick up the denfensive slack then they will get to the second round or maybe even west finals

  • NYC Posted: Oct.13 at 9:11 am
Too high? Not even. This is a good spot for him.

  • Hugo Posted: Oct.13 at 9:15 am
Melo deserves this spot fshaaaaw. But im gonna be thinkin that hes better then a couple players that are yet to come.

  • My opinion matters Posted: Oct.13 at 9:17 am
The only person I don’t like more then Melo is Kobe and with that being said…One of my best friends is a Melo fan and I get great excitement on arguments about this guy because you can’t justify a supposed “top 5 player”, that can’t get NO WHERE near past the first round…4-1,4-1,4-1,4-1,4-0…those are his team series outcomes so far in his career..lol…funny thing was he should have won rookie of the year..but since that first year his fate and Lebron’s and Wades fate have gone entirely seperate ways…he’s not overrated though…probably has the top 3 best all-around offensive games in the league but the guy is just not a winner…so I got to question his heart

  • My opinion matters Posted: Oct.13 at 9:19 am
Oh yeah @bryan…he is not better then Dirk!!!

  • Costa Posted: Oct.13 at 9:21 am
WOW… very surprising i was expecting to see Dirk in this spot

  • James The Balla Posted: Oct.13 at 9:25 am
Yeah, i really hope Rashard is not ahead of him lol … it definitely is a weird spot for him. Great game. I guess that with Carmelo they are rating him on how is team does? Every person seems to be rated on something different … all i know is I’m getting ready to see Kobe number 1 again :D!!!!!

  • Nguni Posted: Oct.13 at 9:26 am
good writing. ‘Melo continues to do his thing, although not defensively. It’s the team that sucks. Like Lang said, nobody has any idea what the front office is thinking.

  • James The Balla Posted: Oct.13 at 9:26 am
Wow i cant type … im blaming it on my key board!!!

  • asdfghjkl Posted: Oct.13 at 9:36 am
    toooooooooo high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Oct.13 at 9:37 am
    Rashard ain’t make the list…,
Put him under Pop, he’ll be the top 3.
    Where’s Dirk???

  • Kenny Anderson's Auditor Posted: Oct.13 at 9:53 am
Darksaber the only one kicking scientific. Word. BTW, how can Lang dismiss Melo on video tape encouraging people who cooperate with the government to fight CRIME in our cities to be shot in the head … ??? That’s not wrong place wrong time, afraid to say. As for knocking out Mardy Collins, stop lubricating every time you get an email from god. He threw a punch and then got his carl lewis on. As for his nonstop jab jumper, homes shot 33% against the Lakers … not exactly the old Bad Boys in terms of defense. About 10 spots too high at least.

  • Joel O's Posted: Oct.13 at 9:57 am
The funny thing, as Lang alluded to, is the knock on Melo is that he IS an elite, unstoppable offensive player… and not more. And as much as that is Melo’s own fault, it also is the fault of his coach and front office for not bringing in guys that properly complement him. As George Karl teams go, I actually think this is one of his worst in the last two decades, because his Nuggets lack a very important thing that his Sonics and Bucks had - balance.

  • Sesa Posted: Oct.13 at 10:00 am
I think Melo is more like #19-#21

  • Joel O's Posted: Oct.13 at 10:02 am
Karl’s Sonics had a great inside-outside punch, were led by a legendary point guard and anchored by a dominant pf, and surrounded by very good shooters and utility guys. His Bucks, while strewn with offensive talent, also had a bunch of hard working Workmen to pick up the slack both on the perimeter and in the paint. These Nuggets are just pure offensive weapon after another, have been without a proper starting point guard for years, and in recent times have let their hustle/defensive guys like Najera and Camby go. As it stands they aren’t even a playoff team right now.

  • KA Posted: Oct.13 at 10:04 am
weak article. came off too much like making excuses for melo.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 10:05 am
The thing about Anthony is I’m not sure he is ever going to figure “it” out. The guy has the talent to be this high on the list. Anthony needs to be surrounded by better veteran leadership. Put Anthony on the Olympic Team and he looks like one of the best players in the world. However, back in Denver Anthony is having a contest with Iverson to see who can put up more bad shots per game (that should be a stat). Anthony is only 23 or 24 so he still might get “it” someday. Anthony did have a career year in FG% and rebounds so there is much promise to his career.

  • WhaHuh Posted: Oct.13 at 10:11 am
You cant really argue that he is not a winner. He has won 2 of the 3 titles NBA ballers can win (NCAA,Olympics) Has he ever been in the better team come playoff time? This is not a failure of T-mac proportions(who hasn’t won anything)…yet.

  • Kieran Posted: Oct.13 at 10:15 am
So Dirk right now as we speak is top 12!! really? Im not a dirk hater and think he sucks just cos his game aint too pretty but top 12 seems real high. Sure melo is gonna come good and people are right the major problems with the nugs is the selection of team mates.

  • starbury&stevey Posted: Oct.13 at 10:16 am
    @JAmes the balla…witch rashard??rashard Lewis??..hell no…there´s no place for Lewis in this top 50

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 10:17 am
I was expecting a lot more crying and complete disbelief with Anthony being this high?

  • Squirrel7 Posted: Oct.13 at 10:17 am
“Put Anthony on the Olypmic Team, and he looks like one of the best players in the world”. Not according to this summer. He was expected to be THE man based on his performances for the US in the past, but wasn’t even in the top-5 for his team, in my opinion. Overall, I actually think he’s regressed over the last year or two. Doesn’t bother me particularly, as I’ve never been a fan. Can’t believe Dirk’s going top-12, same with P-Squared.

  • Orlando Posted: Oct.13 at 10:27 am
Would have had him top 10

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: Oct.13 at 10:29 am
little known Melo fact: he has the best tattoo in the NBA. It’s the Warner Bros. logo and it says “If you see the cops, warn a brotha.”

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 10:30 am
That alone should put him in the top 15 Sam.

  • B. Long Posted: Oct.13 at 10:32 am
If Melo wanted to, he could be alot higher on this list.

  • Bruno Posted: Oct.13 at 10:41 am
just to easy to dispute Melo’s position, but i’ve said before that the list is srewed enough and i wouldn’t be complaining anymore
but Melo, if you are reading this, YOU SUCK!
and not because you can’t play, but because you don’t have enough desire!
how can you play with AI and represent the Air Jordan brand???
those 2 probably feel sorry for you. a wasted talent.
stop smilling to the cameras when you team is down by 20 and you’ve just travelled! go there, get a stop!
    you are a shame.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 10:42 am
    There is the hate.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 10:45 am
@Bruno…How can you say that his talent is a waste when he still has about 10 - 12 more years to play? I’m just curious how do you measure desire? Who has more desire Chris Paul or Deron Williams?

  • KA Posted: Oct.13 at 10:48 am
I actually have no problem with the drama that surrounds him. even with his recent Olympic appearance, I don’t see an issue with him coming up 2nd to the likes of Kobe, bron and wade, that’s pretty good company right there. its just despite denvers inability to build successfully around melo, I don’t think that should be a crutch in judging him. the true franchise player has the ability to direct which way the organization goes, directly and indirectly. that said, LOL warn a brother.

  • folodadon17 Posted: Oct.13 at 10:51 am
I AGREE WITH BRUNO TO A CERTAIN EXTENT
MELO STOP BALLHOGGING,BE A LEADER, PLAY DENFENSE FOR GODS SAKE,AVERAGE 24PPG,10RPG,7ASST AND MAYBE JUST MAYBE PPL WILL RESPECT YOU AND COMPARE WITH LEBRON LIKE THEY DID IN UR ROOKIE YEAR
DENVER NUGGETS HAVE TALENT AND CAN GO AS FAR AS THEY WANT AS LONG AS YOU PLAY D!!!!!! MELO PLAY DEFENSE!!!!!!!

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.13 at 10:55 am
So let me get this straight? a guy is a poor defender and he should be put in the history books with guys like Alan Ogg & Brad Sellers? Fu*k, if that’s the criteria great players are based off of I guess guys like Bernard King, Dominique Wilkins, Adrian Dantley, George Gervin, Charles Barkley & Reggie Miller (all of whom were legends, great scorers with little defensive games and even less passing desire) should all be wiped from the annals of NBA history. Learn the history of the game and where great scorers lie in the history of the game instead of typing sh*t just because your fingers can locate keys. Melo, at his current pace, will be ranked amongst those scoring greats in 10 to 12 more seasons, for just that skill, putting the ball in the basket.

  • d.Y. Posted: Oct.13 at 10:57 am
Sam, Word? He got a tattoo of that “Warn a Brotha” t-shirt? Why didn’t he just buy the t-shirt? That can’t be the best tat in the NBA, not even top 20. It’s certainly not better than Whooo!’s “I pray I don’t have to shoot you” tat.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.13 at 10:59 am
Oh, and of those guys I listed, only one has a title in their career, so does that mean the others all sucked?

  • Bruno Posted: Oct.13 at 11:00 am
@scott. for me, he is wasting his talent TILL NOW, of course.
sure he can change, but how many players have we seen like this? how many heart transplant jokes have we made?
and well, you don’t need to measure this desire, but if you watch basketball, you’ll see who wants, and who dosn’t care and unfortunatly, your guy is on the 2nd group.
watch some games. pay attention to his reactions on court… now its even easier, he plays with AI, Mr Heart… you’ll figure it out.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Oct.13 at 11:06 am
In related news, congrats to A.I. on his new baby girl. We’ve learned from our mistakes and next year she’ll be at least #37.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 11:11 am
Agree with Eboy. Anthony can flat out score. I still think he has the chance to be our generations version of Bernard King. If Anthony can replicate what King did that would be a pretty damn good career.

  • haris Posted: Oct.13 at 11:11 am
    kobe # 1

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 11:11 am
#37 how could you put her that low? This list is crap.

  • Bruno Posted: Oct.13 at 11:12 am
@eboy - if that 10:55 was for me, read what i wrote again. i didn’t said my problem with Melo was defense.
thats just ANOTHER pbroblem, but surely not the biggets one.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.13 at 11:15 am
Not for you Bruno, just in general.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 11:16 am
lol @ this ranking. Good writeup, but i disagree with the placement.

  • MENDEL Posted: Oct.13 at 11:17 am
Yeah IVERSON is number 18. Soebody crash this site, or put the staff in rehab.

  • Terrell Posted: Oct.13 at 11:18 am
Melo, at this very point in time not basing it on potential, is the 2nd best player on his OWN team. AI is the heart and soul of that team primarily because he is tireless and is unfazed by pressure while Melo is easily rattled.. When things are going bad his body language and facial expressions change then he starts forcing shots until one goes in. Melo is a good young player but not a franchise guy which is easy to see because the Nuggets have been AI’s team not his.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 11:21 am
@Terrell….Iverson will probably be traded this season anyway. Denver isn’t a playoff team out West. Everybody thought their defense was bad last year wait until this year. Good luck without Camby.

  • TS Posted: Oct.13 at 11:24 am
melo is not a loser. he may not be better then Bron or WAde but hes in the west…lebron wouldnt even make the playoffs if he was in the west, also the nuggets have played the west con finalist or the champs in the 1st round…its not their fault that they played the best team in the 1st round all the time…melo should have been in the top 10

  • Simone S.Y Lawy Posted: Oct.13 at 11:36 am
where would AI land??? Bobcat or thunder???

  • B_Easy24 Posted: Oct.13 at 11:39 am
Melo fell off. I remember 2 years ago when Slam Online did a ranking like this they ranked Mello in the top ten now he’s ranked at #13 wow.

  • Terrell Posted: Oct.13 at 11:41 am
I agree with one thing…Denvers frot office is horrible and I believe that has hurt Melo and AI. They traded for AI with no plan in place. I laugh at the people who say that AI was supposed to come to Denver and be Steve Nash when he was averaing over 30 at the time of the trade….why would Denver trade Andre Miller for AI for AI to go Denver and be….Andre Miller…What as been Melo’s role? AI.s role?…What the hell is George Karl doin?…

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.13 at 11:52 am
I wonder how many times people need to be reminded that Melo won an NCAA chip as a freshman at Syracuse?

  • big nigga Posted: Oct.13 at 11:54 am
If Carmelo wants to get any better, he needs 2 start passing the ball a little more and he needs to do more on the defensive end.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 11:58 am
@Tad…Good point. If Anthony would have stayed in college all four years last year would have been only his second season in the League. Anthony hasn’t even reached his prime yet.

  • jeremy Posted: Oct.13 at 12:09 pm
that WB tat is for west baltimore

  • Bryan Posted: Oct.13 at 12:28 pm
That has no bearing on his pro career Tad.

  • Joel O's Posted: Oct.13 at 12:34 pm
Expanding on what Lang and Eboy said, once more: if Melo had a proper, *balanced* supporting cast nobody would be talking about his lack of defense. He would probably be ranked well into the Top 10, too. If he had a team around him resembling the early 2000s’ Sixers supporting cast that AI had, or even the really solid pieces that the Raptors had placed around Vince Carter back then (Antonio Davis, JYD, Alvin Williams, MoPete, Oakley, Dell Curry, Tracy Murray), this would be a whole different story and the Melo haters and doubters would all shut up.

  • TADOne Posted: Oct.13 at 1:09 pm
This is true Shia. The point I was trying to make is that a lot of people call Melo a straight out loser and whatnot, when it isn’t necessarily warranted. Should he be blamed for the team that was built poorly around him? He can’t be blamed for Kenyon Martin forgetting how to play basketball after leaving behind the Jason Kidd Alley-Oop Machine and then staying injured. He can’t be blamed for Nene and his string of tough luck. He can’t be blamed for the J.R. Smith 30-foot 3-pointers. He can’t be blamed for management getting rid of tough role players like Najera. Or for giving away Camby. The Nugs have a string of 5 straight playoff appearances and 50-win seasons. I have my gripes with Melo but I would be hardpressed to call him a failure or a loser. He is 24. Remind me again at what age most NBA players round out their games? Melo’s best years are still ahead of him.

  • Eboy Posted: Oct.13 at 1:14 pm
    That was pretty thorough.

  • Co Co Posted: Oct.13 at 1:28 pm
Melo is not a loser he’s just been put in the unfortunate situation of facing the Western Conference elite in the first round. They need to get up out of the 7 or 8th spot. But, there’s no shame in losing to the Spurs twice or Lakers or the Timberwolves that one year when they were really good. It’s unfortunate, but it happens.

  • Ryan.T. Posted: Oct.13 at 1:49 pm
I was watching Real Training Camp (Denver Nuggets) and heard an interesting stat… I believe it was Melo was the 2nd fastest player in NBA History to score 9,000 points. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Carmelo is probably my favorite player in the League. I’m interested in seeing who’s ranked ahead of him. I’ll piss alot of people off and say Melo should be ranked better than 13, at least MORE than one spot ahead of Manu.

  • Aaron Posted: Oct.13 at 1:50 pm
When he plays defense and actually boards, I may accept this.

  • Son of Shawn Posted: Oct.13 at 1:58 pm
I think (and that´s an oppinion) that he´s the most offensive gifted man in the L, he´s so talented and he can score in so many ways that can make him virtually unstoppable, but he´s on the wrong team; maybe even in the wrong franchise, Denver has to get rid of so many high paid players with poor numbers (K-Mart is the best example)that he´s facing a career a la Kevin Garnett (great individual achievements in a small market but no option of putting a ring around his finger unless a strange trade could save him)

  • Young Chris MP3 Posted: Oct.13 at 2:12 pm
    Not better than Iverson.

  • Konate Primus Posted: Oct.13 at 2:20 pm
    13 for melo is appropriate

  • fluxland Posted: Oct.13 at 2:47 pm
13th on the 13th… at least it’s not Friday? This kid is cursed. Happy Thanksgiving to all Canadian Readers and Happy Columbus Day to the American ones.

  • Sarah Posted: Oct.13 at 2:50 pm
Not better than Manu, nor half as competitive, by any stretch.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 2:50 pm
Happy 31st Birthday to Paul Pierce too.

  • fluxland Posted: Oct.13 at 2:53 pm
    And Jermaine O’Neal, scott.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Oct.13 at 3:04 pm
I enjoyed Eboy’s history lesson on scorers. Well put.

  • what Posted: Oct.13 at 3:07 pm
Slam has always been on Melo’s nuts so this ranking doesn’t surprise me, but there are at least ten players below him I’d rather have. For some reason I like my top 15 players to be able to rebound and play defense.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Oct.13 at 3:23 pm
His numbers have been relatively consistent with a drop in PPG but gain in APG. I honestly can’t think of more than 3 or 4 players with a better skill set than Melo. So all the hate seems a little emotional. I can’t say much about the ranking other than that it seems too low. Carmelo has excelled in NCAA, NBA, and international play. That’s a basketball player. Not just an NBA star. Manu is of equivalent overall talent. Dirk is not.
    Good luck with this list…

  • Robe Posted: Oct.13 at 3:30 pm
They’re are 12 better players in the league than Melo… this should be interesting

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Oct.13 at 3:44 pm
It it was based on resume alone without anyone ever seeing these players in action, Melo would be offered the job within the first 5 picks.
But I’m interested to hear what you have to say.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Oct.13 at 3:48 pm
    correction; If it was

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 3:50 pm
If the list is based on building a team for next year from nothing this is about the right spot for Anthony.

  • Candice Posted: Oct.13 at 4:20 pm
I think the Nuggets may be better this year without Camby. Camby was only a good weakside defender, he wasn’t a good defender when it came to man to man. He also stole rebounds from his teammates. I know it’s preseason, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen so far with the additions of Birdman, Balkman, and Dhantay Jones defensive wise. If Nene manages to stay healthy the Nuggets will be okay. Also Melo averaged 7.4 rebounds last year. I think his numbers will rise since Camby won’t be there to steal them from him.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Oct.13 at 4:27 pm
Here’s my attempt of a list of what remains.
    1. Lebron
    2. Kobe
    3. Steve Nash
    4. Tim Duncan
    5. Chris Paul
    6. Carmelo Anthony
    7. Dywane Wade
    8. Manu Ginobli
    9. Paul Pierce
    10. K.G.
    11. A.I.
    12. Dirk
    13. Dwight Howard

  • Z Posted: Oct.13 at 4:44 pm
Melo is a beast. He is a winner, he proved it at Cuse. The Nugs are just an ill conceived team. His offensive repertoire is bananas. Nobody talks about his moves on the block. I think he has the best post game of any wing players in the league. An old school SF that can play inside and out.
You know the only thing that bothers me about Melo? Yeah his D is not superb but f— it, he’s a scorer. No, it’s that he’s chubby. I mean, you’re a superstar dude, hit the treadmill!

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:08 pm
Dutch Rich, that wasn’t in any order, was it? And Ginobili was already picked, and this post in Melo, if you haven’t noticed.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:14 pm
@Moose…Give us your list. Please enlighten us all with your knowledge.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Oct.13 at 5:17 pm
my man. not better than ai tho

  • Keith Posted: Oct.13 at 5:17 pm
    100.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:23 pm
    1. Lebron
    2. Kobe
    3. Chris Paul
    4. Dwyane Wade
    5. Kevin Garnett
    6. Amare Stoudemire
    7. Tim Duncan
    8. Dirk Nowitzki
    9. Dwight Howard
    10. Paul Pierce
    11. Steve Nash scott, play wit it.

  • Keith Posted: Oct.13 at 5:24 pm
Moose: How can you justify Amare over TD?

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:26 pm
Younger, stronger, ready for a breakout. Watch STAT this year. And I forgot the 12th guy, add Deron Williams ahead of Nowiztki and move everyone else down one.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:26 pm
    Stoudemire over Duncan? Really.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:27 pm
Have you seen Duncan destroy Stoudemire every year of his career?

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:28 pm
scott, I’m trying to say that STAT will be incredible this year. After 08-09, you will agree with me. Black Jesus will rule.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Oct.13 at 5:28 pm
@Moose. Since I esteemed Melo higher I had to replace the 13th pick. You didn’t put a 12th pick in your list. Sorry I wasn’t aware that Manu was listed already.

  • Keith Posted: Oct.13 at 5:29 pm
So we’re now basing this list on potential seasons? Okay, then I think Andrei Kirlinko is going to be the first player to average a quadruple double all year.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:29 pm
s’alright, Dutch Rich. I understand now. And I added another dude.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:30 pm
Perhaps you are right by I’ll stick with Duncan for the present. By the way we all know by now Danny Granger is the one breakin out this year. You can thank me in April.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:30 pm
Keith, I think that STAT is better RIGHT NOW. We’ll have to see if that’s the case this season.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:31 pm
scott, thanks for kinda agreeing with me. But Granger has broken out already, he’s just the most underrated player in the NBA.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 5:31 pm
I’m out. Gotta watch the Sox kick some Ray booty.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:32 pm
@keith….Josh Smith will be the first not AK-47.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:34 pm
Tim Duncan is the greatest power forward in the history of man and will be in the top five of this list.

  • Keith Posted: Oct.13 at 5:39 pm
Yeah, I know Scott, I was just giving an equally hypothetical situation. TD is dominant. Amare hasn’t proven that yet.

  • tealish Posted: Oct.13 at 5:40 pm
I think his offense game is a tad overrated. Sure it’s great and offsets his non-existent D, and his mid-range game is truly money — but for someone who many describe as one of game’s top offense forces, he has mediocre finishing ability. I’m just saying I see more double-clutched, all-glass attempts than is expected.

  • tealish Posted: Oct.13 at 5:41 pm
13’s a good spot though, despite being ranked over Al– ok SLAM, I’ll let it go.

  • DellaBalla Posted: Oct.13 at 5:44 pm
This article got it dead right. People seem to blame Melo for the Nuggets disfunction which actaully falls under Karl’s and managements supervision. This year is the Nuggets year though, even though everyone thinks not.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 5:49 pm
Denver will be lucky if they have a winning season don’t see it happen for them. They are about a .500 team and with the LA Lakers, New Orleans, Houston, Utah, San Antonio, Phoenix, Dallas and Portland that isn’t going to cut it. Welcome to the Ricky Rubio sweepstakes Denver!!!

  • Shawn Posted: Oct.13 at 5:51 pm
Melo is overrated, honestly I would take T-mac, Yao, Ginobli over Melo anyday, disregarding age. Melo’s playoff numbers are horrible, someone mentioned his first round disasters. At least T-Mac elevates his game during playoff time, unlike Melo who shooting % in the playoffs is 38 percent. His PPG also dips during playoffs and he only averages about 2 assists. Melo is a good player, but a good getting his numbers in the regular season type of player. He will always be just good unlike the great players in his class Lebron and Wade.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:08 pm
    “Moose says:
    1. Lebron
    2. Kobe
    3. Chris Paul
    4. Dwyane Wade
    5. Kevin Garnett
    6. Amare Stoudemire
    7. Tim Duncan
    8. Dirk Nowitzki
    9. Dwight Howard
    10. Paul Pierce
    11. Steve Nash scott, play wit it.” Moose, PP is already on the list. Add Deron Williams and take Paul off, re-argane it , and you cracked the code!

  • Caleb Posted: Oct.13 at 6:10 pm
Do you really think being 25th in steals says anything about his (or anyone’s) defensive capabilities? That’s a little silly. Otherwise, fine article… and you are probably right about Melo not being in the situation he ought to be in.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Oct.13 at 6:14 pm
@scott: whatever. utah, phoenix & dallas r going 2 suk this year

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:19 pm
Bubba, as long as Utah has Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer looking like an impoverished man’s Stockon and Malone Utah will not suck. Dallas is a toss up and Phoneix has a defensive minded coach who will probalay find a way to make their star-studed team work. But your opionon is cool too.

  • mackmaine Posted: Oct.13 at 6:22 pm
@bubba chuck: by suck do you mean they’re going to be the 6, 7, and 8 seeds in the west? because that’s exactly where they’ll be

  • Caleb Posted: Oct.13 at 6:31 pm
Utah going to suck? Don’t be crazy. You can basically mark them down for 50 before the season even starts.

  • Sean Posted: Oct.13 at 6:33 pm
Great stuff Lang, loved the part about the pope. Maybe SLAM can do an article about how Denver’s front office has sh!t for brains.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 6:34 pm
BETCATS, I did add deron, look above. And P double hasn’t been on here yet, man.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 6:35 pm
Sean, they don’t need to do an article, cause we all know that Enver’s front office sucks.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:39 pm
who won between the Rays and the Sox moose?

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:43 pm
5-0 Rays in the 5th inning? LOL Rays>>>Sox

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 6:45 pm
yeah, it ain’t looking good. still early, though.

  • tealish Posted: Oct.13 at 6:46 pm
Btw, I love Pierce and especially after this year’s finals, he’s become one of the players I enjoy to watch the most. But he better be next on this list.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:48 pm
its OVER Rays v. Dodgers World Series all day!! Or Dodgers v. Soxs. MANNY WILL GET HIS REVENGE

  • Wilford Brimley Posted: Oct.13 at 6:51 pm
He should be outside of the top 25. While he is improving, he is still just a scorer, and an awful defender. Not much of a passer or team player either. As he matures, we will see if he can take the next step to become a leader and a winner.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 6:53 pm
BET, Manny’s gettin it. You seen his numbers?

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 6:54 pm
hell yeah! Manny 4 MVP and World Series MVP

  • Candice Posted: Oct.13 at 6:58 pm
I don’t think everyone should be counting out the Nuggets. I think that they surrounded Melo and AI with the scrappy player’s they need. Balkman doesn’t mind doing the dirty work nor does Chris Andersen. If Karl play’s Hunter , he won’t mind doing the dirty work either. If they keep Dhantay Jones he won’t mind either.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 7:03 pm
    Prolly will happen, BET.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 7:07 pm
The nuggets did have a lot of good summer bargin pick ups no doubt Candice. BUT lots of people cant get over the fact they gave Marcus Camby up for nothing more than the right to swap 2nd round picks. If it were for the right to swap 1st round picks it wouldnt have been as bad, but that decision made no sence to lots of people.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 7:10 pm
Moose, i am sorry for your sox, but Manny is arguably the best right hander off all time. Its a shame he had that situation with you guys. But when he wins the World Series, lots of Boston people are gonna be p!ssed, and i will be suprised if their is not a Manny Memoriabilla burning organized somewhere.

  • Candice Posted: Oct.13 at 7:12 pm
People complaining about the Nuggets trading Camby, did yall actually watch Camby play or just look at his stats? He never gaurded the opposing team best man, it was alway’s Nene or Kenyon. They did the dirty work not him.

  • Steph Posted: Oct.13 at 7:15 pm
Dirk will be in the top 10!!!!

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 7:15 pm
Why was he D-Poy? What are you talking about? I do see that Nene helped, but K-Mart is a average defender on a good day, and saying Marcus had others ‘do dirty work’ is like saying black ants do fire ants dirty work.

  • Brandon Posted: Oct.13 at 7:16 pm
if he’s not much of a defender how does he rank 25th in the league in steals in the least defense orientated team ever..? I hate him.. but he’s good.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 7:19 pm
    OUT.

  • Brandon Posted: Oct.13 at 7:21 pm
How do people think cp3 isthe 3rd best player in the league?? he’s top 10 but the now healthy dwyane wade is better

  • Candice Posted: Oct.13 at 7:23 pm
@BETCATS obviously it was to save money. When I first saw it I was shocked too but then it gradually grew on me. I won’t miss that ugly jumpshot, him stealing rebound’s from teammates, and Camby thinking he’s a point center.

  • Candice Posted: Oct.13 at 7:31 pm
Most of his block’s came from the weakside. He’s not a good man to man defender. When they played the Spurs it wasn’t him gaurding Duncan it was Nene or K-Mart. I’m not saying he’s no good but I just don’t think they are going to miss him that much. I’m also not saying that Nene or K-Mart are the best thing in the world but they do the small thing’s that Cmaby didn’t do.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 7:36 pm
you guys never played defense anyway. But i respect your opionon yet factually disagree with your statements about him not guarding Duncan and not being a good man-to-man defender.

  • Caleb Posted: Oct.13 at 7:44 pm
@Brandon… because he led his team to a divsional title in the toughest division in the league, while averaging over 20 points, leading the league in assists and steals and shooting a high percentage (one of the best seasons, statistically… for any point guard in the history of the league).. and then went on to put up 35 and 10 in his first ever playoff game, and then 32 and 17 in his second ever playoff game… and followed that up with a triple double in game five. And then proceeded to lead his team to a seven game series with the defending champs. I think he’s better than Kobe myself.

  • Caleb Posted: Oct.13 at 7:48 pm
Oh and @the other Brandon… because that’s the kind of defense Denver *does* play: going for steals in the passing lanes.

  • Ryan.T. Posted: Oct.13 at 7:58 pm
Dwight Howard is gonna be ranked too high. He can’t dominate a game YET (today). He’s crazy athletic, strong, and has a HUGE upside….. But to say “today” he’s one of the top 13 best is an over statement. When he has an actual go-to move, can make a couple free throws, and dominates nightly I’ll buy into it, But not right now.

  • sheem Posted: Oct.13 at 8:00 pm
Don’t get me wrong…iverson is one of the best to do it…but I don’t feel he’s better than melo…anybody can put up 25 point if they have the ball in their hands the entire game…iverson needs to take the back seat…and that’s the thing with iverson…he doesn’t know how to differ to other players! Melo top 10!

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 8:05 pm
sheem, not everyone can put up 25 ppg, even if the ball is in their hands the whole time.

  • Anton Posted: Oct.13 at 8:10 pm
Melo sucks, AI is 1000 times better.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 8:16 pm
Whatever you say, Anton. Can you defend that at ALL???

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 8:18 pm

for thanking slam, not me. I thought you was moose

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 8:31 pm
If this list is based on starting a team from nothing there is no way you would take Iverson before Anthony. Iverson is going to start slowing down alot sooner then later. Anthony is only going to get better.

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 8:49 pm
Just checked it out, man. Sad about that hockey dude. But good stuff on CDR and the tailback.

  • BETCATS Posted: Oct.13 at 8:50 pm

  • Moose Posted: Oct.13 at 9:07 pm
    I gotta go, y’all. See you guys later . . .

  • MichaelJ Posted: Oct.13 at 10:15 pm
too high… Melo cannot, and I say cannot win without Camby… I don’t hate the guy, but he can’t be higher than Yao and Boom Dizzle

  • Jose Posted: Oct.13 at 10:39 pm
THERE’S NO D IN CARMELO ANTHONY I SUPPOSE.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.13 at 11:41 pm
    TOO HIGH!

  • Adam Posted: Oct.13 at 11:42 pm
Carmelo Anthony over Brand, and Bosh. These are double double machines that bring it night in and night out. What is talent without work ethic? Ask any GM in the league if they’d rather have Anthony over Brand or Bosh and they would crack up!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.13 at 11:42 pm
@ scott: What the hell are you talking about? Iverson single-handedly got the Sixers to the finals… What do you call that? Even now he proves himself more valuable to the Nuggets than Melo.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.13 at 11:52 pm
    Co-Sign Shawn 5:51 p.m.

  • scott Posted: Oct.13 at 11:55 pm
@teddy….You truly are stupid. Dikembe Mutomobo that name ring a bell. He’ll be in the Hall Of Fame when he retires. Iverson is a great player (one of the all-time best) but at his age he isn’t playing forever. How does he prove himself more valuable? I always wondered why Betcats said you are so dumb. I now understand. Thanks.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 12:23 am
LMAO WHAT THE F*CK. Ahahaha, this coming from a dude who puts Yao at 21 on his list, and Danny Granger within the top 20. Dikembe Mutumbo was a part of the Sixers, but Al put in the work all season long. Plus, those were coming past Deke’s prime days. Everybody knows Al basically did it by himself. Besides, you could put the same argument for the dumb@ss sh!t you said about Melo: building a team from “nothing”. Marcus Camby that name ring a bell? Do you even have to f*cking ask how Iverson proves himself more valuable???????? He’s averages more points per contest, a helluva lot more assists per contest, and plays with HEART. That ring a bell? Not to mention he gets steals and ATTEMPTS to play defense. You could say the same sh!t on age, about any other player in the league who has been around nearly as long as Iverson. Don’t go calling people stupid, scott. Instead, take a look in the mirror, and stop riding BETCATS. Thanks son.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 12:25 am
PS: Iverson getting to the finals > Melo getting into the playoffs… (obviously)

  • niQ Posted: Oct.14 at 1:13 am
i don’t like how melo tries so hard to be “hard”. .if i remember correctly, in one of the first articles of Melo (in slam), he mentioned how his parents (or guardians) brought him up properly and stayed away from trouble.. now he’s trying to be all g’d up from the feet up. whatever man. you’re fake if you are, you’re fake if you’re not.

  • scott Posted: Oct.14 at 1:26 am
G0d you are truly stupid Ted. Mutombo was past his prime with Philly? You’re right he was only the Defensive Player of the Year in 01 (the same year Philly went to the Finals), made the All-Star game in 01 and was second team All-NBA. Dikembe was IN his prime with Philly. Do you understand? Your whole comparing Mutombo with Camby really is a weak point. By the way Iverson played with Anthony and Camby on the same Denver teams. Once again that was a great point. Iverson leading Philly to the Finals was seven years ago that has nothing to do with this list. Also, the age factor is a point. Iverson is 32 Anthony is only 24. It makes a huge difference. Iverson is past his prime. Anthony hasn’t reached it yet. Any GM would rather have Anthony who has way less mileage on the tires and still has his better days ahead of him. Let us point out stats. Anthony averaged more rebounds and more blocks. Anthony had a higher FG%, 3FG% and FT%. We can all only wait patiently and hope you bless us all with your knowledge. Have a great night.

  • Anton Posted: Oct.14 at 1:32 am
I can defend it, unlike Melo.
He has natural talent and doesn’t use it to its full extent. The 6′8″ settles for outside J’s when he could take it to the rim much more often and be more effective. Bad play-maker, poor point guard(tries to be), and an overall failure. Did you see him in the Olympics? Enough said.
The only reason he’s on the Slam hoops cover is because they weren’t sure if DWade would be on the team.
AI, on the other hand, is an excellent play-maker(when he feels like it), a great passer, and takes it to the rim despite being 5′11″ 165lbs.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 1:49 am
Wow, scott. Mutumbo was at his best on the Hawks, everybody knows that. And he came later in the season, after AI established the Sixers as a force that season. Wow, I brought up Camby to refute what you were saying. You think that Melo could have brought Denver back into the playoffs without his ONLY defensive presense (aka Marcus Camby)? Okay, you’re the one thats f*ckin stupid, kid. Iverson’s play in his prime is more impressive than what Anthony is showing right now, and possibly the future. Just see the whole way he carries himself. Oh but noooo, our friend scott here thinks he’s so f*ckin smart. Guess what scott? You’re actually the dumb one. Anthony getting more rebounds and blocks IS A F*CKING GIVEN. AI IS 5′11, WHEREAS ANTHONY IS AROUND 6′8. On the other hand, AI is a playmaker, a team leader, and the primary scoring option. The Nuggets had Camby for blocks and rebounds and Iverson for most points and assists. And now you’re going to tell me Melo is better than Al?? No way! Not even now, not ever in his career. Even in Melo’s prime, he will not be anywhere near as good as Allen Iverson. There’s something you failed to mention as well, with all your Carmelo d!ckriding. The best NBA players play with HEART, that’s something regular season stats can’t buy. That’s something you lack when you totally fall out during the playoffs. If it were one or two bad games, so be it. Everybody has off days. However, Carmelo Anthony played horribly the ENTIRE series. And yes scott, I have sonned you, you f*ckin pest.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 1:53 am
PS: How dare you try and talk down to me when your list includes Danny Granger in the top 20???????? Bahahahaha. Wow, I hope you read this scott, for your own good, so that you realize just how sad YOU are in calling ME names…

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 1:59 am
    Co-Sign Anton.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 2:09 am
@ Eboy: However, one thing with Reggie Miller is during crunch time, he played some remarkable defense. Some of the biggest shots he made may have been triggered off of solid, defensive plays.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Oct.14 at 2:13 am
Also, Carmelo Anthony will never be as great a player as Reggie Miller was. No way he will be even minutely as clutch.

  • Ripper Posted: Oct.14 at 2:41 am
Melo is just a victiom of circumsances it’s not his fault he got drafted by the nuggets who belogs in the dreaded western conference. Remember the last time the cavs made the 07 finals cavs vs spurs. Lebron got swpet 4-0 at least melo did beat the spurs 1 game that year in the playoffs. The west is just so much tougher theses days that teams needs a complete line up and a smart front office just to compete. Unfortunately the nuggets don’t have any of those. Just watch melo’s plays in the USA team he looks to be even better than lebron on half court sets.

Oh and for all the guys who think Dirk should be THIS low, maybe you should go watch the baseball or something. Melo is top 15, no question, based on his offense alone, Dirk is top 10. two seasons ago, even top 3. nuff said.

@ My (arrogant, unsupportable)opinion matters Oct.13 at 9:17 am ==> Not a winner? He won an NCAA Championship in 2003. There is no reason why, at age 24, he can’t learn to win in the NBA, as well. Give the kid a little time, a decent coach, and a complementary supporting cast. Oh yeah, also, ‘Melo is much better than Dork.

  • Hursty Posted: Oct.14 at 4:25 am
Im somewhat confused by Gaz and his comments but I’ll take them as a compliment. So thanks.

  • chintao Posted: Oct.14 at 4:30 am

  • Eric Posted: Oct.14 at 4:30 am
Deron Williams is obviously next. Then Dwight Howard. The top should be: 1. LeBron
    2. Kobe
    3. Paul
    4. KG
    5. Wade
    6. Amare
    7. Duncan
    8. Pierce

Waste, waste, waste….If Lebron is the next A.I. then Melo is the next D.Coleman…

  • Camb0dia Posted: Oct.14 at 5:54 am
my problem of melo is the classic does he make his teammates better, you watch the games and it seriously feels like a i jack u jack between him, ai and whenever Karl feels like putting JR in. and cosign on TD being higher than amare for same reason, one is in it for the stats the other could average 3-3 if that made his team win

@Ted…You’re right Anthony should have more boards and blocks then Iverson. However, you mention how Iverson had more dimes and steals then Anthony. Really? Iverson is a guard. Guards generally have more dimes and steals then forwards. Another great point by you. There is no right or wrong answer to who is better then who but this site is obviously leaning towards Anthony too.

Carmelo should be number 2 on the list behind Kobe.

Shud b top 5 but hell prove that this year

Chintao, yes i would take T-Mac even if he did not play 82 games. Melo the ironman played 82 games and the Nuggets = 8th seed in the western conf and then swept. Melo is just not there as an elite make your team better type of player.

  • chintao Posted: Oct.15 at 1:48 am
@ Shawn==> Hmmm. I just can’t get behind that reasoning. What if you swapped T-Mac with ‘Melo? Put T-Mac on the Nugs. Do the Nuggets even come close to making the playoffs? I’m not sure. My belief is that Anthony and Yao would be a pretty devastating combination, though. Naturally, it’s all conjecture.

LeBron is better than Kobe, LeBron is the best player on the planet. But if he was most of our height, he would be picking up garbage.

Just had to weigh in on this coversation with a couple of opinions. Firstly, Lang’s comment about Carmelo and the pope is an insult to our intelligence. Yeah, Carmelo is apparently a good guy. And yeah, you’ve written articles about him and you guys are buddies and you probably raise the desk a bit every time an email from Melo drops in your inbox. Shades of Starbury. But he has been completely in the wrong every time he’s come under fire for off the court issues. He’s a star and he needs to take the heat.

Tried to find the reader that posted the “it’s not Denver’s fault they always play the #1 seed” comment, but that made me laugh…to me it seems like Denver’s supporting cast (at least the past few seasons) should have been good enough for Melo and Iverson to do more in the playoffs and contend for the Western Conference title. But, they haven’t.

    @ Ted - fo realz.
The Answer runs circles around Melo, literally and figuretively.
