Links: NBA Finals Diary, Day 4

Getting ready for the liveblog…

by Lang Whitaker

Tonight we finally get back on the floor, and the two best teams in the NBA will square off in Game Two of the Finals up in Boston. Ben and I will be in the heazy as well.

In the downtime between the two games, I’ve been thinking a lot about Paul Pierce’s Game One performance, and there’s one thing that’s been bothering me: I have seen written dozens of times that Paul Pierce heard his knee pop.

But I don’t think he ever said that.

In the postgame press conference immediately after the game, Pierce said, “When I came down I thought I felt a pop, I thought I tore it. I couldn’t move.” So he didn’t actually “hear” a pop, he just “felt” a pop? I can’t tell for certain what he said which time, because this ESPN.com story twists around another quote and makes it sound as though he did actually hear an audible pop.

Then again, maybe none of this makes any difference, because he faked the whole thing anyway.

Kidding!

To prepare for tonight’s live blog, I’m trying to figure out what to expect. Here’s a few quick predictions…

Doc Rivers will pretend to sprain his knee, be carried off the court screaming and crying, placed in a wheelchair, and then will make a miraculous recovery and return to coach the C’s to a victory.

Kobe will become upset with his inability to make jumpers and will pour a gallon of clam chow-dah over Bennett Salvatore’s head.

Kobe will become upset with his teamates and punch all of them in the face.

Ray Allen will show emotion on the court.

Sam Cassell will record an assist.

Cameras will capture Glen Davis shucking oysters on the end of the bench.

Tony Allen will check into the game and lose his mind on national TV.

And now it’s your turn. What do you expect to see happen tonight? Leave us some comments and let us know.

Have fun with that. In the meantime, I’ve got to get to Boston for the game. See you guys back here tonight for the Liveblog.

Luke Walton will take the court rocking a vintage #5 Celtics jersey

  • Thomas Posted: Jun.8 at 11:51 am
Paul Pirece faked the injury, ‘nuf said. He knew the Celtics were down in the game and tried to do something that would get the crowd back in the game. Keep in mind Andrew Bynum sprained his knee and he was out for six MONTHS and had to have surgery. Paul Pirece said he sprained his knee and was out two minutes?? No he faked it and Red Aurbach is kickin’ back where ever he is proud

  • Alex Posted: Jun.8 at 11:53 am
Between oysters Glen Davis will finally decide which character from Sex and the City he most empathizes with.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Jun.8 at 11:54 am
    BOSTON CELTICS!

  • Slick Nick Da Ruler Posted: Jun.8 at 12:07 pm
Paul Pierce will wince, bitch, and moan. Wait, that’s Kobe…

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Jun.8 at 12:07 pm
Game 3 prediction: Kobe will hav a career defining game because of 1 person… Lil Wayne. LeBron = Jay-z & Kobe = Lil Wayne. Tha Carter 3 will be lil waynes career defining album. it will either make him tha best rapper alive or tha biggest joke in hip hop. Game 3 will be kobes career defining game. it will either make him tha best baller alive or tha biggest joke in tha nba. now im not a kobe fan or a lil wayne fan (or a lebron fan. just a jayz fan) but i think kobe will take that championship trophy and li li li lick it like a lollipop

  • Jolst Posted: Jun.8 at 12:07 pm
Ray Allen will spit his gum in the face of Vujacic tonight after he fakes an injury like Pierce.

  • Bubba Chuck Posted: Jun.8 at 12:07 pm
but i want tha celtics to win

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:08 pm
DJ Mbenga will suddenly get up from the bench, call a time-out, run into the stands, look around in a confused fashion, recognize someone in the media section, run over, and tell Lang Whitaker that he “thinks his hair is nice.”

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:11 pm
Surprisingly, Vladimir Radmanovic will score a game-high 29 points to give the Lakers a victory. At the post-game conference, he will ask, apropos of nothing: “Hey Triche, you still for Hawk?”

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:14 pm
Peter Vescey will get up and reveal to Radman that the proper phrase is actually “Hey Triche, you still WORK for Hawk?”, thereby revealing that he is a closet Linkstigator.

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:17 pm
Eddie House will dazzle everyone with his freshly-groomed facial hair, which will force the Celtic faithful to cheer “EDDIE! EDDIE! EDDIE!” despite the fact that he will play no part in the game.

  • Henry Abbott Posted: Jun.8 at 12:18 pm
FWIW, this was Pierce on the podium after Game 1: “Well, when I first fell to the ground I heard a pop in my knee, and all I felt was pain when I grabbed it. And at that point I thought it was just I thought I tore something. That’s the way I felt at the time. Usually when I go down, I’m getting right back up, but it was an instance where I turned my knee and it popped, heard it pop, and I was just in pain where I just couldn’t move. Once I got to the back, I felt on it, then I stood on my two feet and just tried to see where the pain was at. It was on the inside of my knee. I tried to put weight on it, wasn’t bad. I tried to lateral, a little soreness. Once I felt I could put weight on it, I was like, I had to get back out there to help my ballclub. That was all that was going through my mind, just being a part of it. I just wanted to get back out there.”

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:24 pm
Kendrick Perkins will take of a mask to reveal his secret identity: Star Jones. He will then recite a sonnet to Dwyane Wade on bended knee.

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:25 pm
    * take OFF a mask..

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:28 pm
Doc Rivers will try to deflect criticism by informing everyone in a wise tone of voice that “Next Thursday is the Nuclear Baby Day!” and that “a third of man will perish”. He will conclude this seemingly insane diatribe by whispering the cryptic word “Ubuntu.”

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:29 pm
Leon Powe will sink one of two from the charity stripe with 8:09 left in the 2nd quarter. Eboy will decree that it is a “series-changing” free throw.

  • Tariq Posted: Jun.8 at 12:30 pm
I will find more useful ways to spend my time.

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jun.8 at 12:35 pm
Henry breaks it down! And Alex, loved your SATC line.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Jun.8 at 12:39 pm
The NBA have made the Finals free to watch online to countries in which they aren’t being shown on TV,as much as I think Stern is Lucifer himself, that was a nice move.I might even buy a jersey now.

  • B. Long Posted: Jun.8 at 12:42 pm
Please tell me Marc Gasol isn’t filling in for Pau again tonight.

  • LSM Posted: Jun.8 at 1:00 pm
i predict a good game from lamar and kobe pau will probably get killed again, although kg’s jumper was looking unusually wet in game. not that it matters since garnett can kill him in a variety of ways lakers by 10

  • Captain America Posted: Jun.8 at 1:01 pm
Pierce was seen running a marathon yesterday without any bandages and ice…fake

  • TADOne Posted: Jun.8 at 1:01 pm
    So Henry Abbot’s a Linkstigator?

  • RV Posted: Jun.8 at 1:05 pm
    Terry Porter….Terry Porter…Terry Porter….

  • RV Posted: Jun.8 at 1:09 pm
Late breaking news: pat riley says the grizz intended to include Miller in the Gasol trade all along, so he’ll suit up for the lakers tonight.

  • el Posted: Jun.8 at 1:09 pm
before beginning of third Doc will he tell Pau he “looks nice in that dress”

  • Lang Whitaker Posted: Jun.8 at 2:01 pm
Also, let me throw in a quick disclaimer: I will be liveblogging the game tonight, as long as the wireless internets available at the GardenFleetNorthCenter is working better than it did during Game One.

  • starbury&stevey Posted: Jun.8 at 2:55 pm
what are oysters?what means that word?(you guys have fans from europe too).. @captain america…do not believe what Pat Riley says..

  • starbury&stevey Posted: Jun.8 at 2:58 pm
    @RV,..NICE!!

  • Matt Posted: Jun.8 at 3:25 pm
dude, why do ppl even think pierce faked the injury. bynum and pierce had different types of sprains. it was pierces miniscus, which is on the inside of the knee. it was bynums actual knee joint. big difference. and do u think doc rivers and the coaching staff would let him skip practice two days in a row if he was faking it? and just like sam cassell said, no one on the lakers said he was FAKING it. they were questioning the severity of it because he came back so quick.

  • RV Posted: Jun.8 at 4:29 pm
yeah he wasn’t faking it, i’ve had ankle sprains that leave me on the floor for several minutes, then minutes later it feels like a minor sprain….BUT, i do think he came out of the tunnel expecting there to be a big ovation and a Reed-like moment so he came out like he was warming up for a title fight.

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 4:34 pm
@ Pierce is a bitch. I totally expect him to pretend to get shot in the head before the game to get the people pumped up. T-Mac will be blamed for the gun shot.

  • Tweaks Posted: Jun.8 at 4:38 pm
Actually the Lakers will win a very defense-orientated “clash”…End of story.

  • Jolst Posted: Jun.8 at 4:39 pm
I thought it was funny when Perk made the same type of comeback walking out of the locker room but nobody cared.

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 4:40 pm
    for get the @.

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 4:41 pm
I’m not sure if Pierce will fake getting shot, but thats what Riles told me.

  • j rich Posted: Jun.8 at 5:06 pm
the injury was WAY overhyped. willis reed..WTF? i wasnt born when that happened, but from what you hear about it, he was seriously injured. the pierce injury i think i understand. he went down, expected to get back up, then realized it was more serious. not seriously serious, just ifyouput weightonitrightawayitmighthurtatinybit serious. he thinks it’s worse than it is, goes to the lockerroom then realises it was a minor sprain then goes back onto the court. no willis reed, no faking, just not realsing the (lack of) seriousness of his injury. a minor sprain. how can someone stabbed 11 times play a full season, then not play after a minor strain.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.8 at 5:35 pm
Let’s have a moment of silence for Chukaz’s brain cells.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Jun.8 at 5:37 pm
Chukaz just wants another Farmer Jones column to himself.

  • Madtice Posted: Jun.8 at 5:39 pm
If he faked it, it was genius and took a lot of guts to actually execute…

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 5:58 pm
    @ H: F*ck you, f*ck Paul Pierce, and f*ck Chuck Norris.

  • Jukai Posted: Jun.8 at 6:11 pm
oh wow, I see you added Chuck Norris in there. Funny.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Jun.8 at 6:13 pm
    Chukaz:Not even a Half Baked reference,for shame…

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:21 pm
    @ H: IDK what the f*ck U R talkin’ about.

  • vtrobot Posted: Jun.8 at 6:23 pm
BYNUM HAS BEEN FAKING IT THIS WHOLE TIME! HE’S GOING TO “OUT-WILLIS” PIERCE AND MAKE AN ENTRANCE DURING THE 3RD QUARTER OF GAME 3!

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:23 pm
    Let me try that again.
IDK WTF U R talkin’ ’bout.

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:24 pm
    WTF does “half baked” mean?

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:31 pm
Bynum has probably been waiting to the the Willis Reed thing since he got hurt. Kobe is the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread.

  • Garrett Posted: Jun.8 at 6:33 pm
Wouldn’t that be awesome if, after all is said and done and the championship is over, Paul Pierce goes to an interview and is like, “Yup. Faked the whole thing. Bitches.”

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:49 pm
Once Kobe is done with the C’s, he’ll put the fun in funeral and the laughter in manslaughter.

  • Chukaz Posted: Jun.8 at 6:50 pm
    Kobe gonna kill the Celtics.

  • John D Posted: Jun.8 at 8:11 pm
Chukaz, unplug your computer and never plug it back in.

  • Karma Posted: Jun.8 at 8:31 pm
In regards to the Pierce situation, here are my thoughts, via my blog http://canadianballer.blogspot.com
Sorry for the plug, but you gotta start somehow). I’m really looking forward to game 2, I have a feeling that the Lakeshow will be able to steal this one. There is no way they miss makeable jumpshots as much as they did in Game 1.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Jun.8 at 8:47 pm
chuckaz is on fire today… but he still will never understand that kobe is goign to be bitch made 2nite by pierce

  • youngmuggsy Posted: Jun.8 at 8:47 pm
Pretty sure Eddie House is gonna get down on his knees and beg Doc Rivers to insert him into the game. He didn’t play a minute of game 1, but i’m pretty sure his ass didn’t touch the bench all game long.

  • Money Bill Williams Posted: Jun.8 at 8:54 pm
pp and perk go down with knee trouble. KG’s intensity leads to cardiac arrest. Ray Ray decides he would leave the staples and go hand his resume to Paramount. It leaves Doc with little choice than inserting SamIam or eddie house. He chooses eddie jnr who goes on to posterize gasol, leading to the next Nate Robinson comparisons

  • H to the izzo Posted: Jun.8 at 9:12 pm
I take it there’ll be no LiveBlog

  • Hursty Posted: Jun.8 at 9:27 pm
@Izzo and Jukai- please dont hype Chukaz up anymore than he already is. Dude says some funny/ridiculous sh!t and if he gets banned it’ll be a shame :( @SBW, Rondo almost sh@t all over Vujacic.

  • Hursty Posted: Jun.8 at 9:30 pm
    no live blog appears correct…..

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Jun.8 at 11:36 pm
    O ye of little faith.

  • Dunkadelic MC Posted: Jun.9 at 12:34 am
Leon Dunkadelic Powe was the X-Factor of the game and his coast-to-coast play for the dunk showed that the Celtics were more aggressive than the Lakers tonight.

  • albie1kenobi Posted: Jun.9 at 6:09 pm
you have to give it to Chukaz for the line about funeral and manslaughter. that was just outright brilliant.
