Where We At…

The state of SLAMonline…for today, at least.

by Lang Whitaker

After waking up every day this week at 6:00 a.m. to watch the US beat various international teams, I’m taking Friday off and heading out of town for the weekend. So no Links on Friday, although Sam will be around and he’ll probably give you some stuff for Sam Online.

Actually, when you get to the site tomorrow, there may not be a Sam Online, at least as you know it now (don’t worry, Sam will still be blogging away). We’ve made a few tweaks to things and the new new site should be up and running Friday. It’s basically the same as what you’re looking at now, but it should be a little more streamlined and easier to navigate, and it’ll also make it simpler for us to show you what’s new and what you can’t afford to miss.

Team USA’s next game, against Australia, comes on Saturday night/Sunday morning at midnight from what I can tell, and I’m going to do my best to park myself in front of a TV and get notes up at some point before Sunday morning.

So, see ya this weekend…later…

Sorry to be such a grumbler, but, for the life of me, I can’t understand how it makes it easier for us to navigate the site that you change Sam Online’s name to People’s Champ (and please tell me you aren’t actually thinking of spelling it without the apostrophe - Paul Wall reference or not) and add yet more column subcategories, which don’t even have content yet. Similarly, I hardly think it solves the problem of having important stuff disappear from the front page too quickly to include a category called Don’t Miss. It’ll disappear among the clutter just like everything else does. Really, guys, you need to do a complete restructuring of the site and streamline everything to improve it significantly. For instance, you simply need to cut down on the amount of column categories; 30-something is just too much for anyone (and I’m not even talking about my age here…). A lot of content is a good thing, but there is such a thing as too much - or at least it needs to be presented in some other format (such as more columnists alternating under the same category, or something). But perhaps the tweaking is still in progress and I’m jumping the gun here.

More changes are coming before the end of the day. It will be much easier to navigate and will be better on many different levels. Lang, I saw highlights of Shawn Green. He looks like a stick figure. So, that’s why the 49 HR 130 RBI guy no longer exists. At least he’s clean.

One advice I can dish out for people want to get to new content and worry they might miss it: RSS Reader. It’s nothing complicated; do a quick google search to download the first one that pops up and have SLAMonline on that RSS baby.. then every time there’s new content, your RSS will show it and you just click!

that’s a great tip, Hype. RSS Reader is awesome.

  • Sam Rubenstein Posted: Aug.25 at 2:31 pm
Yes. I use RSS more than going to actual web pages. If you don’t want to use a separate program like newsgator, you can use the google labs reader , which would be right on your google homepage. And I’m sure yahoo is doing the same thing. On our site, the reader will give you the latest story, no matter who posts it: Lang, me, Mutoni, Jake, and everyone else that’s about to start contributing. Howeva… you’ll miss out on stuff that’s going to be on the front page that might not be an actual story that pops up in the reader.
