Doin It Big in Brooklyn

Microsoft Knows How to Throw One Helluva Party

By Khalid Salaam

We all love sports, believe that. But with the summer doldrums at maximum effect, the SLAM crew has to find other ways of occupying our time. Good for us then that the excellent people at Microsoft and Edelman PR (I want to thank Yasmeen Coning and Sara Bell especially. They were awesome and very, very helpful) invited us to a concert on Saturday.

The shows official title was “Zune: Live At the BBQ. The daylong show was held to increase the buzz of Microsoft’s MP3 music player, the Zune. A smart move seeing that the market for digital music players is gaining momentum everyday and with the scene as competitive as it, everyone needs an angle. It was held at Empire Ferry State park in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn and with water serving as the backdrop to the stage as soon as I got there I could tell that things were well thought out. Plus I had high expectations anyway, I mean Microsoft’s involved after all. There could have been a gladiator pit with tigers and armored elephants duking it out. They can afford it, so what the hell, you never know. So obviously there were no animals there otherwise you would see pictures and i would have a souvenir but it was still well done. They had a basketball tourney going on and other activities (and no I didn’t play ball. I wasn’t trying to get musty) but I came for the music. The line-up was nuts plus they invited surprise guests so I came amped up. When I got there I texted Slam Editorial Assistant Konate Primus who had gotten there early. Special Ed was on stage doing “I Got It Made” when I first walked in so I missed him but I wasn’t too hurt about that. I like his songs but I’m saying, he only has three hits so whatever. Konate told me I had just missed the Boot Camp Clik and that Smif and Wessun did “Sound Bwoy Buriel”. Damn, can’t believe I missed that.

I kept it moving though and grabbed a fruit salad and a bottle of water and waited for the next act. There was a good mix of industry and non-industry people there so I talked to a few people, politicked with a couple of others and went to the front of the stage when the Clipse came on. I had never seen them live before so I was excited. They ran through several of their hits including “Whatever Happened To That Boy”, “Chinese New Year” and “Grindin’”. It was popping though and they had the crowd’s attention. I went back to the media/VIPs section and met up with XXL Lifestyle Editor Branden Peters and a couple of his peoples and we were just relaxing and having fun. Microsoft and Edelman know how to throw a damn good party and I was taking it all in. But when the LOX came on I ended my networking and jumped into party mode. Shiek, Kiss and Styles P (plus like half of Yonkers) came on stage and killed it. For a good 35, 40 minutes they went through hit after hit after hit. They did “Money, Power and Respect”, they did “Why”, they did “I Get High”, “Wild Out”, “By Your Side”, etc. Plus they did remix verses and mixtapes songs too. They had amazing energy and stage presence and all jokes aside they easily had the best performance of the whole day. After they performed Large Professor came on and did some Main Source cuts but the youngun’s wasn’t really recognizing the songs so the energy level plummeted for a sec.

Then Brand Nubian came on rocked it. Puba looks about 60 years old but he can still rap his ass off. Breath control, timing, enunciation, the whole thing. Sadat was there too but Lord Jammar missed his flight and that hurt the chemistry. Puba even mentioned when they did “One For All” and mumbling something about them needing that “third rail” to really get it going. Their performance was still hot regardless. Doing “Punks Jump Up”, “Slow Down”. “360” and a couple of other choice cuts. Everyone was just chilling after that, word had circled around earlier that LL Cool J was gonna close so we all waited. We figured there was a chance that he could do all girls songs (his name is ladies love after all) and since I came without a female escort I wasn’t really in the mood for all of that but I decided I’d stay anyway. He took a minute and his light show was really over the top plus the volume was turned up to 1000 so it got so loud that I couldn’t really hold a conversation. He hid “Jingling baby”, “Bad” and “Mama Said” so I was good. Plus he did “Doin It” and all the ladies started going crazy so he invited them onstage when he did “Headsprung”. It was funny at that point but I couldn’t complain at all. I left after that but I had a great time and everyone was already asking if Microsoft/Edelman were gonna do this again next summer. If so I’m there.

This is about rap music, isn’t it?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Aug.7 at 1:40 pm
I never would have pictured Microsoft representing a party with that lineup. That is unreal! (In the coolest way possible.)

  • Myles Brown Posted: Aug.7 at 1:56 pm
I cant remember the last time I heard the name Special Ed before I read this. Thank you. Was Chi Ali there? And did any of you check out that Rock the Bells show?

  • jbn74sb Posted: Aug.7 at 1:58 pm
The lineup seems appropriate for a concert designed to promote the Zune. Neither the artists or the product have any future.

  • Konate Posted: Aug.7 at 1:58 pm
i left with a major headache from screaming at the top of my lungs.
Khalid, you forgot to mention that young lady who looked like Lauren hill before she lost her mind… she was FIIIIIIIIINE! oh and they were giving out free food,Zune’s, and beer. it was definitely Live At The BBQ!

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Aug.7 at 2:02 pm
Bodie comin’ with that California sunshine!

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Aug.7 at 2:03 pm
Seriously, man, for someone who apparently just drinks and looks at p0rn all the time, why are you so grumpy? It’s all Kobe’s fault, isn’t it?

  • Chris Posted: Aug.7 at 2:04 pm
What the f*ck are you talking about none of them have a future…most of the artists there where old school. LL Cool J is one of the most succesful rappers ever. Brand Nubian, Lox, Clipse? No future? They youngest group is 5 years old! Gotta love ignorant ass mofo’s…

  • Konate Posted: Aug.7 at 2:04 pm
Oh and i forgot Joell Ortiz was there and Masta Ace
Jbn, that comment was very ouch! the Lox have a future, The Clipse have a future.

  • Konate Posted: Aug.7 at 2:06 pm
Chris jus made a really good point

  • Myles Brown Posted: Aug.7 at 2:07 pm
All they wanna do is ride around shinin while they can afford it…

  • jbn74sb Posted: Aug.7 at 2:38 pm
Apparently you have cofused the previous success of some of these acts with the likelihood of their success on future releases. I believe that Troy Hudson sold more CDs in the last year than Special Ed. And forgive me if I no longer get fired up for a new LL CD.
Ryan - I’m an attorney. I get paid to be an a-hole.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Aug.7 at 2:45 pm
As a 30-plus rap fan, the lineup seemed perfect to me. Sadly, I was out of town. Glad Khalid and Konate represented.

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Aug.7 at 2:51 pm
I was doing laps in Prospect Park on Friday night (road bike) when I heard music that sounded familiar. Came around a corner and saw KRS-ONE on stage. Weird. I need to start paying closer attention to who’s performing where and when.

  • jbn74sb Posted: Aug.7 at 2:54 pm
I too would be stoked to see some of the acts. Special Ed, LL, KRS-ONE, Brand Nubian, etc. The Clipse and The Lox, not so much.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Aug.7 at 2:55 pm
Tell the truth, Bodie — you’d do it for free, wouldn’t you?

  • jbn74sb Posted: Aug.7 at 3:03 pm
Two peas in a pod, Ryan.

  • Ron Posted: Aug.7 at 3:11 pm
This should’ve been a Slam Wire post, then we could’ve made all kinds of jokes about Bodie getting murked.

  • Konate Posted: Aug.7 at 3:16 pm
Jbn, who would you have wanted to see perform? with the exception of large Pro I was hyped to hear all those old school joints and then The clipse set it off with sum new joints.

  • jbn74sb Posted: Aug.7 at 3:18 pm
Konate - Special Ed, LL, KRS-ONE, Brand Nubian, etc. The stuff I grew up on.

  • Young Chris #3 Posted: Aug.7 at 3:36 pm
    D-Block!

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Aug.7 at 3:49 pm
    Mighty Mighty D-Block…

  • Rynn D. Posted: Aug.7 at 4:05 pm
Myles, I believe Chi Ali is doing time for murder.

  • Sammy Posted: Aug.7 at 5:36 pm
Damn, I wish I was in NY still.

Yo, they had that same concert here in Chicago, but with a different, doper lineup. Here in the Chi, they opened the showup with Chi-Town underground rap group Qualo. They’re hip-rock, like Shop Boyz, xcept they actually got skillz. Then N.C. heavyweights Little Brother came on and ripped the stage. They were dope. They had tons of energy, with Big Pooh dancing around the stage and commanding most of the attention. They did most of the hits from The Minstrel Show, and sprinkled in some songs from The Listening and their new joint, which I forget the name of. If you don’t know about them, go download some of their joints RIGHT NOW! After they did their thing for almost an hour, Bilal came on and sang some tunes for the ladies. I’m not a fan and didn’t know any of his songs, so I took that opportunity to make a quick run to the john. I came back just in time to see Talib Kweli come onstage. Dude rocked the mic for about half an hour, performing Get By, Waitin For The DJ, Put It In The Air, and a few more songs off of Quaklity. Ten he brought underground Fem.C. Jean Grae to spit for a minute while he caught his second wind. Then, after Jean and Kweli kicked it for a while, Mighty Mos Def decides to join the party! I can’t even explain how excited I was to witness Blackstar live in person! Mos was an unannounced surprise guest and the crowd was hyped to see him join Kweli to form one of Hip-Hop’s GREATEST groups of all time. They hit the crowd up with Respiration, RE Definition, Astronomy, and more. At one point, during Respiration, Kweli forgot his verse, so he just spit an impromptu freestyle. Mos and Kweli then went back and forth, both doing solo performances and then kicking it together. Those 2 are like a black version of Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin, running around playing jokes with one another. At one point, Kweli dissapeared offstage, but kept talking to Mos. Mos asked where Kwe was at, and Kwelie says “I’m truly undergound. I’m the real boogey man.” You can tell they’re really true friends on and off the mic. Anyway, props to Microsoft. Great show focusing on REAL HIP-HOP. Sorry to all the hoops heads who want to hear about nothing except basketball on this site.

Black Star is dope. They should come out with another LP together.

damm i wish i was in NYC. In raliegh we have a gay ass down town celebration like every weekend but, and its alright but they never get any rap music, or any big name people.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Aug.7 at 7:48 pm
    Buck one for Bucktown.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Aug.7 at 8:54 pm
    I got you, ‘Riq.

  • BallingNZ Posted: Aug.7 at 11:05 pm
Damn you Americans and your sick-ass hip-hop concerts! :-(

  • weezy leezy Posted: Aug.8 at 10:32 am
that concert sounds bananas! LOX and Grand P!!

  • andacagar Posted: Aug.8 at 12:48 pm
The show was iiiilllll. The beer section was popping, the zune airconditioned tent with the XBOX 360 was dope as was the fact that they set up a b-ball court and were giving away a free zune to the winners of varius 3 point contests they had. I got there just as Clips killed it on stage. I missed Smiff n Wessun with Buckshot (I heard they tore it down), I heard OC and Special Ed from afar. I’m so pissed that I missed Bootcamp though because i seen them before and they are dope, oh and MOP was there. I think as far as lineups , Ny held it down. So many womens and the fact that the brooklyn bridge was in the backround as was the Manhattan bridge just looked dope. Oh uhm LL is a MACK, dude had girls crying for him he had just about 90% of the females in attendance(about 100 if not more females on stage with him), son can put on a sick show.

  • Dutch Rich Posted: Aug.8 at 5:17 pm
Was dope, kept texting my friends about how stupid they were for missing an incredible free gift. Kept calling too, and just put my treo on speakerphone. My three and a half year old got to waive her arms to classic LL joints. I’m now officially and without a doubt the coolest dad.
Thanks Microsoft, but I would like to say next year don’t have your catering handled by one local soulfood spot with 3 people on staff. That was retarded.

  • Michael Tillery Posted: Aug.8 at 8:03 pm
IAAW..I envy you bruh. Must have been hot!Crazy, sitting here writing and listening or have listened to Respiration, 1-9-9-9, Re:Def, The Blast and Get By. Also Keith Murray’s World Be Free and a bunch of Black Moon. Miss that era bad. Got a chance to kick it with Sway and Talib for a bit out in Vegas for the CWebb event. Talked to Sway about journalism but got to vibe with Kweli about his music and dude really seemed like he appreciated the love. He was one of the few that wasn’t jaded amidst all the stars. BS did something to me when they hopped on the scene. Good work Khalid, hit me up.

  • bigmike407 Posted: Aug.10 at 11:52 am
Was Billy Gates there? That concert organizer needs like, a BIG bonus. LL, Special Ed, Black Moon, Lox, and the Clipse, plus Brand Nubian? Hip-hop lives!!! Clipse and Lox gotta be the hardest groups out now. And I thought hip-hop committed suicide after that ‘Aunty Jackie’ nonsense.
