The definitive ranking of the best players in the NBA today…
*Best friends* Vince and Antawn have long been inseparable, or so they say. When they balled together at the University of North Carolina, Antawn was the good one, the award-collecting leader that always seemed to be striving to reach his potential. (Note: A Billy Packer drool cup still sits next to the Wooden and Naismith awards in his trophy case.) Unlike good guy Antawn, Vince was
seen somewhat as the bad boy that didn’t appear to be doing everything he could to dominate.
When the two scorers were traded for each other on draft day ‘98, it appeared that Golden State was getting the angel with the white smile that glistened – his game light and easily enjoyed without stress like a watery American beer – and Toronto was getting the unfulfilled potential, dark and rich with hops like a Chimay rouge; the raw skills one might sell their soul for. (Note: I think the need to use a beer analogy to liven up a discussion of Antawn Jamison only serves to reinforce how easy it is to overlook him.)
When the dynamic duo began their divergent NBA odysseys, it was Antawn who was barely noticed, but still ‘a nice player’ on some forgettable Golden State teams. (Riddle: If a guy averages 25 a game in Golden State in 2001, does the national media make a sound? Answer: No.) While Antawn toiled in relative obscurity, Vince blew up, aviation-loving fans and media alike swinging from his jock. Because really, what’s some inside/out, incredibly solid earth shit when you can kiss the rim? So Antawn went about his November-April business and Vince leaped tall buildings in his signature kicks in May, earning acclaim, adulation and even some short-lived next-Jordan talk .
As Vince was beginning to be seen as a malcontent for not reaching that potential in Toronto, Antawn was traded to Dallas and won the sixth man of the year award, admirably sacrificing himself for the greater good, though any true shine he could have received was dulled by a playoff exit at the hands of the Kings. He began his tenure in DC the following season and has been plying his trade in the nation’s capital ever since.
Jamison has continued to be a pillar of consistent offensive productivity for the Wizards. Tawn’s probably the only guy that you forget averaged a double double last season. Despite all that he’s given, Jamison continues to be overshadowed (contract size, media attention, etc) by a blogger that currently functions on one knee and a blossoming two way stud with a penchant for straw-munching.
During Tawn’s steady, overlooked time in DC thus far, Vince’s rep has grown and shrunk like a highly traded stock.
Maybe it’s about time we just let the controversial whipping boy do his thing in relative anonymity and focus some prolonged attention, full Wizards squad or not, on the nice guy. A little role reversal never hurt anybody.

one of my best basketball memory this past few years is UNC X Duke. antawns last or second last game there… guy went FREAK MODE…
thanks god dallas didn’t take full advantage of having him in the roster, cause i hate dallas and when they got Jamison, i was scared.
anyway, FORGET WHAT SLAM DID YESTERDAY, putting Ason as a top 30 NBA player in 2008 was just a bad joke, and Antawn ranking is fine.
i hope he still improve his game this year… he was here in Brasil with fella Raymond Felton this summer, by the way.
Jamison is interesting to me, because its somewhat hard for me to identify his most dominant feature. His 3? Mid range jumper? Post up game? Versatility (4 mostly, but plays the 3 and 5 sometimes), His ball handling and variety of offensive moves? Offensive rebounding?
Also, Michael, averaging 1.7 assists doesnt always mean the guy cant pass. If the guy he passes to cant hit a shot, its not Jamison’s fault. Also, hockey assits, a lot of the time, he can make the correct pass out of a situation but the guy who he passes to passes AGAIN and the guy who ends up with the ball is the scorer, so Jamision isnt credited with the assist, but his passing abilities arent superior either. Above average for a 4 man though, and he’s usually aware of where he is on the court and rarely looks lost offensively.
co-sign Eboy.
@DP/9th Wonder- if DP is sick, does that mean that he is jeopardising his Varsity spot? Look at his injuries the past few weeks: busted ankle, flu. DP needs to get better to hold down that roster spot.
Drew Cleary needs to have some help on the Wizards there. He + te other trainers dont seem to be able to control Arenas.
Problem is though, Penny and Hill were around that 25-29 age when they were having their injuries. A healthy Grant Hill would have meant Tmac woulda been outta the 1st round a long time ago.
And I’m not even going to delve into this, I can’t believe the zombies here are agreeing with this but Jason Kidd one step away from this was a tragedy.
he’s a good player but he doesn’t play a lot of d
@Bryan: vicious man!
@Eboy: Defense wasn’t my only qualm with Antawn. You did read what I wrote, didn’t you? Besides, Lebron is a WAY BETTER defender than Antawn. WAY WAY better. Lebron doesn’t put nearly enough energy into defense as he should, but at the end of games he has been known to lock down defenders one-on-one, something Antawn never does (he never really does anything at the end of the game though). Straying from one-on-one defense, Lebron plays the passing lanes cause of his court vision as well as anyone, and can block a shot or two if he exerts himself. Antawn is as good of a shot blocker as Nash is.
Ok, he’s not a perfect player, and this list was probably not as well constructed as you (and many others) would like it to be.
But dude, seriously, just suck it up. Be positive for a change. Maybe you won’t argue so much about things. Its 5-20 peoples opinions on what is a very, very subjective matter, Let it be man.
Just take a step back for a minute and think about what Jamison DOES do well and brings to the table, rather than focus on what he can’t/won’t is unable to do. That would be nice. Thanks.
Hursty: Why am I being blamed for this? Bryan went after me, Eboy is rooting him on and trying to instigate this. I’m arguing my basketball opinion here. No one has really tried to debate it at all.

Seems like my awesomeness has wore off.
Thanks for ACTUALLY talking basketball though. Nice to know you watch games.
Izzo is stupid. For real.
Also, there are lots of web sites which you can watch the games off from their local stations on tv as they stream it via the internet.
On tv though, normally there is not hoops AT ALL on free to air. You have to pay for every thing you get of nba coverage here (which sucks obviously).
I’m totally the Bruce Bowen of this board.
@Eboy - self awareness is my strongest trait. Or so I’ve been told
@Jukai - hey, I’m entertained!
@Myles - and why you make the lists at all. It’s like fuel to fire. Good times.
Also, am I Danny Ferry cause I’m white?
1. Dirk Nowitzki
2. Paul Pierce
3. Antawn Jamison
4. Vince Carter
5. Rashard Lewis 231. The Khandi Man
Then theres always the youtube clips you can find of highlights, but I’d prefer to see the quarters of games that get loaded one by one.
Even though the games arent of a great standard, I get to watch the full Summer League games for free, so I always do.
@Izzo: Why don’t you read the whole damn comment section instead of blindly typing, mmkay? Read my 9:47am comment where I expressed literally every single reason why I don’t think Jamison should be that high. Afterwards, stick your hands in a blender so you don’t have to write me the apology.
@Bryan: First off, the Orlando Magic as a team get more rebounds than the Washington Wizards. Secondly, I never said Dwight Howard was this GURU of rebounding: his size, his position on the team, the rest of his team’s need to stay in the perimeter, these all give Howard the advantage he needs to rebound over everyone else. Likewise, out of all active players, Jamison is the SECOND TALLEST ON THE TEAM. The only other taller player with any sort of minutes, Haywood, has the mobility of a walrus and can’t grab the rebounds if they stray too far away from him. Why has this TEN YEAR VET never averaged even close to that rebounding number before? You think it’s just because he came onto his own, or is it because he’s on a team where he can be the dominant rebounder simply because no one else can? Also, he only scores in bunches, he DISAPPEARS in the middle of games. Yes, he averaged 21 points. Vince averaged 21 too. Do you think Vince was scoring every quarter, everytime up the floor? Not to mention, both of them are totally silent in the fourth quarter and playoff time. While I’ll give Jamison credit for pulling twelve rebounds a game during their first round exit, his 16 points on 40/28/57 pretty much paint a picture of how much the guy stepped up.
@Flux: to my knowledge, I’ve only argued with you once, and that was on the logo issue. To my knowledge, my argument was constant throughout the debate. To my knowledge, you were arguing with just about everyone.
Izzo: I feel like one every morning before my coffee, thats for sure.
Allenp, you are totally and wholeheartedly correct.
I’m taking you either disagree with their importance or you believe they aren’t flaws in Jamison’s game?
(1)I do disagree of the importance of the leadership factor,1)because he could very well be a great lockeroom leader.We don’t know and I don’t it even matters that much.I mean there will be likely be players in the top 10 that aren’t good leaders(Dwight Howard).
(2)The ‘clutch’ factor is a difficult one,because he has shown signs of clutchness(word) in the past,and while I agree he didn’t show much clutch-osity(I know) last year,I think there’s a good reason for this.At any given night,Antawn could either be the most important,second most important or third on the team and when healthy,Gil will always take the shot regardless of his performance in that game and considering Butler had a great season last year,was the second most important throughout last season.Although his stats suggest that he did step up last year.In summary,I would have had him around #32,but this isn’t exactly a travesty.
1) Howard was credited heavily for his on court leadership last year. Leadership, I think, is a major facet for me. It’s what separates the greatness of Shawn Marion from the greatness of Lebron James. We don’t know if he’s a great lockerroom leader, but I haven’t really heard anything on the subject. Any links or citations otherwise would be DEFFINITELY noted.
2) It’s more than just last year, he hasn’t shown he has been clutch anywhere in the past five or so years. I agree, it’s certainly unfair to say there isn’t pressure for him NOT to take the shot with Gilbert and Butler there… but in last year’s playoffs, Gilbert was tossing brick after brick in the fourth quarter, and a good leader would have demanded Gilbert to cut the crap and give him the ball. Jamison stayed silent and watched sadly as Gilbert tossed up bricks in games one and two. I hold this against him.
I guess the problem is that a lot of people are telling me what he is CAPABLE of, instead of what he actually showed. I have not acknowledged one thing: that while Caron and Gilbert have pretty much negated him in terms of ball handling and on-court leadership and clutchness, Jamison hasn’t just taken that role nicely, but altered his game (taking more garbage shots, focusing on rebounding) around the more dominant personalities on his team. That’s certainly a plus I have far overlooked. Still… over Jason Kidd and Ron Artest? I don’t know if I can buy that.
(Real leadership experts also understand that qualities often preached as leader-ly, such as perseverance, determination, singlemindedness of purpose, and charisma, can actually result in poor leadership. “Those sound like good traits when good things happen,” Allen says. “They can also lead people to a very bad place. We know people with those traits have led us into situations that were not good outcomes for ourselves or for society.”
Such as? “Well, Hitler,” he says.)
Kobe = Hitler
he’s married to antawn’s wife’s sister.
