Home Cooked Pt 1

cooking up crack like they’re bringing ‘88 back.

By Konate Primus

Often in my posts and when I talk I use the term “Dope”, and this weekend I also used the term in a conversation with a older Caucasian male at Princeton University. He asked me “Where does that term come from and why do I use it the way I do?” So, to answer his question, I told him I have no idea who was the first person to use the term or what region it originated in. All I know is where I’m from that’s what we say when we like something a lot. My guess is the term came from the effect actual dope has on you or at least the misconception of what it does to you. Dope gets you high and falsely relieves your pains, at least that’s what I think.

When I use the term, most of the time it’s in reference to music or fashion, because that’s what makes me feel better when I’m having a bad day. Those are my addictions. I become another person when I hear some classic B.I.G or when I get a fresh pair of high top Adidas. I don’t know why but it gives me a slight feeling of euphoria.

There are different levels of dope-ness and Adidas covered a few of them with their new “Home Cooked” collection. I’m not going to lie to you, I’m not crazy about all of ‘em so I’m going to label them by their ability to put you under the influence.

Miami, Cleveland, and Denver: comparable to Sizzurp, makes you feel stupid in a good way but it’s not against the law. I wouldn’t do it.

Lakers: similar to weed, I could see a lot of people down with it. I’m not mad at it but it doesn’t do anything for me.

NYC: compararble to Shrooms. The team stinks but you appreciate what it stands for. I can see folks losing sleep over wanting to know “Where did I get this jacket from?”

Houston is raw and uncut Coke- This is dope at its purist! You can’t go back to dressing regular after this one. You’ll be expected to have dope ish all the time.

    I like that Houston one…

  • Eazy Yi Posted: Feb.13 at 6:46 pm
Does the New York jacket have Isiah on the back?

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Feb.13 at 7:00 pm
That New Orleans jacket is bringing ‘68 back.

  • Holly MacKenzie Posted: Feb.13 at 7:01 pm
Unlike some people, I comment on good posts rather than just reading and staying silent.. ahahah I’m loving the Houston colors as well, they just look good together. Not sure how I’m feeling about the Lakers though, can we get a front view?

    space city!

  • thomas Posted: Feb.13 at 7:32 pm
i had no idea cleveland was called comback city.

  • Jake Appleman Posted: Feb.13 at 7:42 pm
i’d rip the knicks logo off and rock that jacket

  • Ken Posted: Feb.13 at 8:26 pm
Agree with Jake. And I always thought Dope came from dopamine, ie the high you get from that chemical, be it natural or artificial (drugs).

  • DP Posted: Feb.13 at 8:29 pm
yo Kontae, when this stuff coming out man. That Lakers fit is looking real gutta right about now. play wit it.

  • Reggie Evans Posted: Feb.13 at 8:32 pm
    Insert David Harrison reference here

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Feb.13 at 10:25 pm
The Houston is good, the rest varies between awful and ridiculous. Do the Nets have one? With “Trade Me” on the back? Or “Insert Brooklyn Here in 3 years”?

  • Konate Posted: Feb.14 at 12:54 am
Ken, i do remember stating that i wasnt sure where the term came from but thanx for the info. Is that officially correct?

  • Konate Posted: Feb.14 at 12:56 am
Gerard, the is not a Nets jacket. No one cares about the Nets, thats why they are coming to BK!

  • Konate Posted: Feb.14 at 1:00 am
Ms.MacKenzie, I wonder what/who you are talking about?

  • tealish Posted: Feb.14 at 2:27 am
Denver’s the best. Houston’s not too far behind, but the others are pretty ass ugly.

  • Ben Osborne Posted: Feb.14 at 3:56 am
    Dope.

  • Tariq Posted: Feb.14 at 4:05 am
I love it when I manage to get my etymology fix at slamonline. I actually think that Houston joint is quite ugly. If I were to compare it to a chemical compound I’d go with Windex. That NY one, however, is on point, provided I Jaked it up and tore the emblem off. And not to go off topic, but since Konate is in the house let me ask you this my man: Where can I find ANYTHING that has Malcolm X on it. A picture or just even an X like those caps that were hot for a while in the early 90s. Any ideas?

  • Konate Posted: Feb.14 at 4:44 am
Ben what are you doing up!
Traiq, I know a couple of mom and pops spots that sell that type of stuff(the shirts not the hats)
or if you ever in Harlem all up on 125th the T-shirt vendors have all types of fly ish! or Ebay might have some goodies.

  • Mark Z Posted: Feb.14 at 7:38 am
LIke the NYC jacket. But unless it features Clyde Frazier on the back, it’s useless.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.14 at 9:14 am
Co-sign Jake about the Knicks jacket.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.14 at 10:06 am
    Cleveland’s is HOTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • drew Posted: Feb.14 at 2:02 pm
nice cool kids reference in the title

  • The Tree Posted: Feb.14 at 2:06 pm
    A) Where, when, and how do I get my dope fix? B) Respect to Ken for physiological knowledge. C) When will a similar word derived from seratonin become popular slang?

  • Khalid Salaam Posted: Feb.14 at 2:18 pm
Is there anything we can compare to crystal meth? Because that’s the drug of choice for most of America and i’m feeling very patriotic today

  • Konate Posted: Feb.14 at 3:39 pm
