Russell Westbrook is Ridiculous

Slamadaduck.

By Ryan Jones

A couple months ago, I posted notes from an utterly forgettable UCLA-Western Illinois game. This was one of those justify-my-existence things: I was in L.A. for about 36 hours and wanted to see the Bruins play, and so I got a credential and took some notes. Among other things, I mentioned that the UCLA media contact had told me how badly Russell Westbrook wanted a Slam cover. I told him that was highly unlikely, but that if Russell did something really dope — like dunk all over OJ Mayo — maybe he’d get a Slamadamonth. When I met Russell after the game, I told him the same thing.

I don’t believe Westbook dunked on OJ — although Josh Shipp sorta did about a week ago — but the creatively coiffed Bruin guard has been victimizing the rest of the Pac-10 with regularity. He did this to Cal back in early January, which I missed at the time. But I didn’t miss the highlights from this past weekend, when UCLA played host to Oregon and Russell Westbrook did…

This.

Two thoughts:

One, both Shipp’s gank on OJ and Westbrook’s bang on the Oregon kid came in games when the Trojans and Ducks — both prominent Nike schools, obviously — wore all-black unis against the three-striped kids from UCLA. Knowing what I know about the sneaker game, I can’t imagine Nike blacking out two of its biggest programs v. the Bruins was an accident. I also think it didn’t work out very well.

Two — Russell, if you’re reading this, you’re still probably not gonna cop a Slam cover, and considering we’re coming off a memorable NBA Dunk Contest, even a Slamadamonth is unlikely. But keep doing what you’re doing and we won’t be able to ignore you. Hopefully this post helps further educate the masses (particularly those of us for whom your games start at 11 pm) and spreads the word of your nastiness. Slam loves you and everything you stand for.

And if Sam or someone with more technical capability than me wants to imbed the video of the Oregon dunk right into the body of my column, I’d be fine with that.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:23 pm
Ryan:Is there now a character limit you know refuse to exceed?

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 12:23 pm
More a time limit, izzo. I am overextended at the moment. Bye.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:28 pm
If that Bye was sarcastic:Did you see the injury to Eduardo over the weekend?
    If it wasn’t sarcastic:Bye

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 12:35 pm
I was actually going to link to a clip of that, too, just for shock value. But it was just too gross. Why doesn’t stuff like that happen to Gerrard?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:37 pm
That was the nicest thing I’ve read Jones write in the longest time. He must think this kid has Lebron potential and wants to attach himself to his bandwagon to get in on the money early since he missed out on the King’s ransom.

    Premier League: Where disgusting happens

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:38 pm
Initially, I thought Izzo was talking about Najera then I read Ryan’s post and figured out it was about the fruttiest sport in the history of the world.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:39 pm
I thought the exact same thing to myself. But the bone coming through the sock was just too much…

  • maio Posted: Feb.25 at 12:39 pm
I need to see Larry Brown in tar and feathers to get over the Eduardo shock.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:40 pm
    Eboy:Look it up.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 12:40 pm
Dude’s foot nearly fell off, eboy. Literally. Nothing fruity about that.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 12:41 pm
Sadly (or probably for the best), all the links have been from YouTube. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere, though.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:42 pm
You don’t want my reasoning for saying it, Jones. You’ll laugh and agree all at once.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:43 pm
I have a link ready and waiting if need be but it really is disgusting.Career ending most likely.

  • maio Posted: Feb.25 at 12:43 pm
Look up Demond Greene ankle injury (german guard) while you’re at it.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:44 pm
I have been gassing this kid all year long. From a little-used freshmen backup last year to where he is today!?!? I saw that bang against CAL (sorry Boykin) live and my subsequent scream was not enjoyed by my napping daughter. He and Collison are a dope back-court. Seems there are a few guys who played big minutes last year, that get much less burn this year. Ben Howland is a wizard….. Maybe that isn’t the most appropriate term to use around those parts.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:45 pm
I have Memphis v. Tennnessee thoughts to be posted very soon….

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:46 pm
That injury made Theismann’s look like a tweaked ankle……

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:47 pm
Also not to brag or anything but I did predict a Tennesse win.It also looked like Calipari was coaching to lose at times.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:48 pm
Looking forward to the notes Cubs. And Cub, did you see Beasley’s big performance in a loss this weekend? That kid is my hope for the Heat’s top three pick in the lottery.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:48 pm
I got blame for Coach, too… read about it soon!

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:50 pm
I refuse to believe that any GM in their tight mind and regardless of team needs will pass Beasley for the no.1.But then again I did just put the words “GM” and “right mind” together didn’t I?

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:50 pm
    right mind*

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:51 pm
E, Beasley is flat-out ridic. One of the first times in years that I am GLAD i am subjected to mass BIG 12 action……
He will/should be first! Maybe the Nuggets’ bad weekend can be parlayed into a lottery move and they can get my boy DRose. He and AI in the same backcourt?!?!?
    0= Beasley’s weaknesses.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 12:54 pm
Rose looked good too. He’s got a nice mid-range touch. He’d fit nice with AI, for sure, but the Nugs aren’t going to fall off that much. For real, Cub, no weaknesses for Beasley? He’s going to be what, a big 3 in the lig? I liked what I saw, a lot.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 12:57 pm
Agreed on the Nugs, E. I kinda passed on viewing both of their games this weekend, but all it takes is NOT making the playoffs.
    Let those lottery balls fly!
Beas can play anywhere on the floor. 3/4 in the pros, in my estimation.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 12:58 pm
Well Beasley does have some slight attitude problems but nothing major.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 12:59 pm

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 1:03 pm
Could Beasley make Shawn Marion irrelevant and let the Heat spend his money on a point guard and another big man?

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 1:04 pm
    Yes.

  • H to the izzo Posted: Feb.25 at 1:05 pm
    Indeed.

    WOAH WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 1:06 pm
    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 1:08 pm
Can you tell I can’t wait to see Maid Marion opt out?

  • tike Posted: Feb.25 at 1:36 pm
Westbrook locked OJ Mayo up that night….oh and the Highschool part … im from western pa and i just seen one of the best performances around our way…Terrell Pryor the nation #1 football recruit well he also exploded on the basketball Court….stat line 39 points 24bounds 10 blocks and 6 assist…NICE

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 1:43 pm
They play basketball in Western PA?

  • Myles Brown Posted: Feb.25 at 1:59 pm
    Ryan is a retard.

“Initially, I thought Izzo was talking about Najera then I read Ryan’s post and figured out it was about the fruttiest sport in the history of the world.” & “You don’t want my reasoning for saying it, Jones. You’ll laugh and agree all at once. ” Please Eboy let me hear your reasoning for these remarks, at least for the laugh.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 2:47 pm
Fine, LZ, for you. The reason I say this is, unless you play soccer on the highest level, it is the EASIEST sport in the world to play. You don’t have to be specially skilled, just in excellent cardiovascular shape. Once you master ball control you can play the game at a fairly decent level if you have an type of athletic ability. Let’s put it like this, a 3 year old can try and play baseball but would never be able to hold a bat, hit a thrown ball well, catch a hig fly or hard ground ball. A 3 year old can’t play football, couldn’t take a hit, throw a 50 yd pass, catch a rocket pass, etc. Let’s not even get into basketball, since we all know how difficult the game is to be good at. Hockey is incredibly hard to play, volleyball is not easy to be good at, golf, dammit, golf is one of the hardest to master for the patience and skill it takes to make shots from all areas of a course, green, etc. Soccer, Futbol, whatever you guys call it, I’ve seen fields of three year old’s running around like chickens without a head, kicking the ball to no one in particular and some kid(s) getting lucy every now and again to kick the ball into the goal past some pudgy goal keeper. If I can watch a group of toddlers play an organized game of a sport I know the game is simple. Running, kicking, handling the ball. That’s it. Repeat, over, and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over. Look, I know the guys that play professionally play at a high level and have imense skill compared to the average guy playing in a rec league, but compared to the other pro sports players in the world, they would be a dime a dozen. Name me 50 professional soccer players that could play NBA ball. Then think to yourself, “are there 50 NBA guys who COULDN’T play futbol”?

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 2:55 pm
You might be getting ripped for this one Eboy.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 2:59 pm
Oh well. This is a basketball site, right? We get ripped when we talk about things that make no correlation to the subject matter, so why should I be scared? And TAD, tell me where I’m wrong.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:00 pm
I’m laughing, eboy, but I’m not agreeing. I was gonna do a point by point rebuttal of your stupidity, but that would be giving it too much credit. I’ll just make one quick point: Steve Nash is good enough to be a two-time NBA MVP. Ask him if he think he’s ever in his life been good enough to be the most valuable player in the world’s best soccer league.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 3:00 pm
Oh, never said I disagreed. Besides, I’m a xenophobe anyway according to Ryan.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:02 pm
As his moronic comment just proved, Ryan Jones is the best futbol writer on the world’s greatest basketball site, bar none.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:04 pm
And I never said dominate a sport, Jones, I said play it, which means running back and forth for 90 minutes.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:11 pm
I’m 98 percent sure you don’t even believe what you’re saying, eboy, and that you’re just baiting me, but I just got back from class and this is a good way to clear my head for a few minutes, so I’ll play along. Soccer is no more running back and forth for 90 minutes than basketball is running back and forth for 48 minutes. You assertions are beyond absurd.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:14 pm
Which sport requires a higher OVERALL skill level, Professor Jones? Basketball or the sacred game of futbol?

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 3:14 pm
This is why Americans suck at soccer.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:15 pm
If you don’t give the right answer, then I know you are just being a noodgy prick moreso than normal, which is fine, cause I’m in a really good mood today and I can use the pissing match to get me more in line with my normal self.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:17 pm
Plu if we insult each other, I know I won’t have to write a retration to my comments to explain my attempt at caustic humor towards you. You are a blessing and a saint in that respect, Jones.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:18 pm
I don’t know, eboy. Maybe ask Oliver Miller? Or Manute Bol? If you can find me a top-level soccer equivalent of either of those guys — both of whom logged regular NBA minutes despite being a) a fat f*ck or b) anorexic — I’d appreciate it.

  • FLUXLAND Posted: Feb.25 at 3:19 pm
Eboy…you are a funny guy! I know you don’t believe what you wrote… just trying to get Jones going.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:19 pm
    Also: Myles is a double-retard.

  • Kene Posted: Feb.25 at 3:20 pm
…lol…Eboy. If you think what those 3 yr olds do is actually soccer, then I don’t blame you for thinking soccer is the fruitiest. Heck, even the MLS is barely watchable….precisely because all those players do is run up an down for 90 minutes. Skill is sorely lacking in the american version of soccer.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:23 pm
SEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, Kene, get’s it. I don’t watch international play, because I’m not hitting up Telemundo or Univision cause I hear enough of that sh*t at my in-laws. The only international games I see are the World Cup and I was excited for Italy winning, and I recognized the craziness of the tournament, but otherwise……………

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 3:25 pm
    Americans suck.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:26 pm
You make less sense by the minute, dude.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Feb.25 at 3:29 pm
Im rubber and Ryan’s glue….and from an endurance standpoint alone, soccer is a highly respectable sport.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:29 pm
Dude, where’s my soccer ball? Forget it Jones, I’d have the same argument over hockey with someone, but that’s just me. I know TAD hate’s hockey, Holly too (can’t understand how she hasn’t been deported for that)and it’s not even broadcast anywhere, but I love the game, so I’d argue it’s points, too. I love you anyways, even if you’d kick me in the nuts like Franz Beckenbauer.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Feb.25 at 3:30 pm
    But I still can’t watch that sh*t.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 3:31 pm
Hockey players tend to be pretty good athletes, too, and I’ve enjoyed the few live matches I’ve been to. On TV, it’s pointless.
Also, eboy, you f*cking SUCK at apostrophes.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:33 pm
I don’t get paid to write.

  • Pat Is Five Posted: Feb.25 at 3:34 pm

gotta love those high school rankings.

  • Boing Dynasty Posted: Feb.25 at 3:55 pm
    Hockey fights are sweet.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 3:57 pm
And for anyone that comes through in the next several hours and wants to murder me, I will post this from one of my initial comment about this subject “The reason I say this is, unless you play soccer on the highest level” you get it, I understand that soccer/futbol players that play on the highest level are great athletes.

  • jbn74sb Posted: Feb.25 at 3:57 pm
I’m with eboy as to the suckicity of soccer and hockey.

  • Mr. Hurst Posted: Feb.25 at 4:05 pm
true, well you guys obviously saw the hockey dude getting his throat slit by the skates, but the English Premier League like, um 10 years ago had one where the dude broke his shin through the skin. nasty stuff.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:05 pm
Thank you eboy, just got home from lunch, therefore the late answer. I can understand your points, some of them valid. But they still show you’ve never played soccer. You forget one simple thing; in basketball you handle the ball with your hands (the human toll for handling) whereas in soccer you use your feet (head, chest any bodypart besides arms/hands). This makes it very hard to master the techniques in soccer. The ball is so much more “loose” in soccer, this makes it a lot harder to guard it from the opposition. I am not saying one is harder than the other. I play both, and find them both challenging. Just that your comments show you really don’t know what you’re talking about. And if you by “fruitist” mean soft, I can assure you that you get hit, injured and so on a whole lot more in soccer than in basketball. The stuff that classified as flagrant fouls in the NBA, happens loads of times in every professional game (1 ref + two assistants on a giant field with 22 players, gives lots of room for cheapshots). Basketball is a sport of contionus contact; battling for position and so on - therefore the players have to be very strong, and to a lesser extent a sport of collisons. Soccer on the otherhand is a sport of collisions first and continous contact second, therefore the athletes don’t have to be as strong (to much weight also keeps them from running so fast for that extended period) but I can assure you that all the collisons/kicks etc. hurts a whole lot more than the occasional hard foul in BBall. Furthermore professional soccer players run between 7-15 kilometres (sorry don’t know what that equals in miles) at breakneck speed while playing the ball in 2 x 45 minutes. Think everybody plus 230 pounds would have big-big trouble doing that, and that easily leaves out more than 50 NBA players. Ryan has excellent points. My first love is BBall but soccer is really nice to, you should try to watch it (not MLS - zero talent).

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:07 pm
    Hockey sucks.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:11 pm
LZ, just one point of contention, I did play soccer during my high school years, just to keep up my conditioning until basketball season began the following fall. It was incredibly easy as opposed to the difficulties of basketball that you didn’t touch on that most basketball players have when initially learning the game.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 4:33 pm
Eboy has actually taken the retardation that Myles and I were tossing back and forth and claimed it as his own. Impressive.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 4:35 pm
Also, just making sure everyone actually watched the Westbrook clips that inspired this post…

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:41 pm
Myles will hate you even more for making any type of comparison with me, Jones. It’s not my fault, Myles, sorry.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:45 pm
I was wrong with you having soccer experience. Then again high school soccer in the states - now I understand why you have the idea that’s it’s only about running headlessly back and forth. And there are difficulties when starting every kind of sport, goes for soccer, basketball etc. I had 22 ppg my first season playing basket 18 years ago (not saying it was all-world competition but the best my small country had to offer) struggled much more on the soccer pitch.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:46 pm
You are an anomoly then, Lz.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 4:50 pm
    Anomaly.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 4:51 pm
    I’m a d*ck.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 4:51 pm

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 4:52 pm

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:52 pm
Fuc*ing wordy b*tch. My assistant has more natural vocabulary talent than you, Professor Wordsworth.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:53 pm
    Thank you I guess?!?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:54 pm
It was a compliment, Lz, I think.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:54 pm
I thought Ryan was your assistant eboy.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 4:54 pm
Somewhere Ryan is laughing his a$$ off.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 4:56 pm
Lz, Ryan’s skin tone is not the right hue to be my assistant (no ghosts allowed) and his gender is not inline, either.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 4:58 pm
On a basketball-note; I haven’t follow the NCAA at all this season, but just found out that ESPN is broadcasting just about everything march madness down here. Which teams are worth checking out?

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:00 pm
Hmm it sounds like we have the same preferences when it comes to assistants.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:01 pm
Lz, for a good assessment of all things “collegy” (is that acceptable, Ryan Webster?), check Cub’s piece from today on the Tenn/Memphis game. Nice cross promotion, right?

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:02 pm
    Thx, very nice indeed.

  • Myles Brown Posted: Feb.25 at 5:04 pm
    “Collegey” I’m a d*ck too.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 5:12 pm
    Is that even a word?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:24 pm
Nah. I love Myles and Ryan though, although they both hate me.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 5:25 pm

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 5:27 pm
Period should be inside the end quote, too.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 5:27 pm
Ryan is going to take this and teach his class how not to write.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 5:29 pm
Sadly, eboy would be right about in the middle of the grading scale in my class. Room full of journalism majors, half of whom don’t get why a sentence needs a subject AND a verb. Maddening.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:29 pm
    YES!!!

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 5:30 pm
    However, I don’t grade on a curve, so you’re looking like a D-.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:35 pm
Journalists can’t write in the states either? Seems to be a worldwide epidemic. At least you have Mike James and his incredible diary in the Slam-mansion.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:38 pm
Yeah, but I could give you “special favors” that could raise that D to a B, buddy.

  • Ryan Jones Posted: Feb.25 at 5:39 pm
Very sadly, you might also be in the middle of the hotness scale.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:41 pm
    DOUBLE YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:42 pm
    And that’s horrible, for real.

  • TADOne Posted: Feb.25 at 5:44 pm
    Ummmmm….WOW.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:46 pm
Sorry not diary, letterbox or something like that. Eboy hot? I thought he was some kind of Charles Bukowski clone appearance-wise.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:48 pm
Who the fu*k is Charles Bukowski?

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 5:50 pm
Lz, you’re lucky I’m heading home for the day. Why couldn’t you pick someone that was still alive at least?

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:51 pm
Great American writer. Not to be confused with Frank Bukowski great American bricklayer.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: Feb.25 at 5:54 pm
He just came to mind, sorry - he might be dead but his spirit(s) lives on. Have a good one!

That mohawked Bruin is getting iller by the second. Bruins and Vols in the Championship!

  • Russ Bengtson Posted: Feb.25 at 7:26 pm
I was going to actually say something on topic, but I’ve chosen to just repeatedly punch myself in the face instead. Seemed like it would be less painful and more productive.

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 8:00 pm
    nice russ…
I want back that time i just took to read all those comments.

  • white hot eboy Posted: Feb.25 at 8:04 pm
Oh, screw you, Cub, I told someone to go read your piece from today. I was doing my part even while being made to feel like a moron moreso than normal. :)

  • Cub Buenning Posted: Feb.25 at 8:32 pm
    nice e.
This is the best I’ve seen Corey Fisher play all year….
Kinda stoked for this UT-KState game coming up. I am already looking for a reason NOT to put the ‘Horns in my Final Four. DJ Augustin is nice, Iverson in training.
