Paul Pierce Is Actually Serious About This ‘Best Player in the World’ Thing

by Marcel Mutoni

When the news initially broke about Paul Pierce telling a Spanish publication that he’s the best basketball player in the world, I chuckled and proceeded to ignore it, figuring Paul was either still drunk from the post-title celebrations (which would be perfectly understandable), or that something simply got lost in the translation.

Well, it turns out that The Truth didn’t get his words twisted across the pond; he’s dead serious about this. The Boston Herald caught up with the reigning Finals MVP and asked him the question again, and Pierce didn’t waiver.

“That’s what I said. I am a confident player and a lot of people might look at it like ’Oh, another cocky attitude,’ but I don’t look at it that way,” said Pierce.

“I have an opinion, I have a right to have one and that’s the way I feel. I felt I’ve played against the best over the years and felt right now that I’m the best player in the world.”

I should preface this by stating that despite the terrible things he did to my team this past June, Paul Pierce is one of my favorite players in the League. There’s not much that he can’t do on the offensive end, and can be downright unstoppable at times. An absolute joy to watch.

Until he proves that he’s even the best player on his own team, however, I’m simply going to have to ask him to pass along whatever it is that he’s been smoking of late.

thats what everyone said about wade after the chip run in 06. Best player in the world at the time. ( only one of 24 playing though).

Aug.1 at 9:09 am

Hursty says:
He wasnt necessarily the best player in the world at the moment, I should explain that. He was the best player competing for a ring at the time at any level of basketball. If Dallas had won then Dirk ( likely) would’ve been the best player in the world ( for a period of time anyways.) SO, Pierce does have a case if its within a certain context. Note, I havent read the story yet.

Yann Blavec says:
Being the best player of the NBA finals doesn’t mean a lot. Tony Parker was the Finals mvp a year ago, and I’m french and I believe he’s not great. Both players are really really good at what they’re doing, but not great.

I think the way Paul played against both Lebron and Kobe in the playoffs was impressive, but he’s getting a little carried away with himself. It was a team effort that won the C’s the championship and while he was a huge part of that, he’s not the best player in the league.

Aug.1 at 9:24 am

Tom says:
The guy is an NBA all-star, what do you expect him to say? Do you think Lebron actually believes Kobe is better than him? I remember back in the 90’s someone asked Barkley if Jordan was better than him, he said no……i’ll never say another player is better than me, or else there’d be no point competing.

Aug.1 at 9:27 am

Hursty says:
Paul Pierce was better than Kobe in almost every aspect of the game during the Finals. He imo thoroughly outplayed him in the series. If you outplay the best player in the world at LEAST 4 times out of 6 doesnt that make you a better one, at least for the time ( bar the 10 point game). btw, after reading the post, that was what Pierce was saying. Dont say that Ray Allen was solely responsible for ’stopping’ Kobe either. Pierce got the assignment in crucial situations after and during game 1 and after. Now, If Doc Rivers said the same thing as a coach, THAT would be ridiculous. Also, does Finals MVP have anything to do with the playoffs? If it was based solely on the Finals, then Ray Allen was pretty good come to think of it.

Aug.1 at 9:28 am

crusader says:
good point Tom- whats the point of playing if you’re gonna acknowledge or admit defeat. with this attitude a player can go far. whats he gonna say…”ya, im pretty good at this game- but man kobe is da man”…f*ck that- pierce is well within his rights if not obligated to state that hes the best player

Aug.1 at 9:29 am

Hursty says:
I agree with everything you said bar the last sentence Tom. If you said that he/she was better then that would serve as a true motivational tool for you to prove that you were better and force the other person to give yout the same credit. Thats what would happen to me anyways.

BETCATS says:
i would be more concerned if Paul was acting humble right now. He just beat Kobe (who 67.72% of you think is the best player in the L) and Kobe’s team (who everyone including me thought was gonna kill boston) and he was voted finals MVP. So remind me why the best player on the best team shouldnt thing that that makes him number 1 in the nba? if 1+1=2 then doest being on best team+being best player on that team= Best in NBA? I dont think paul is the best, but i understand why he thinks he is

And lebron had help from joe smith and wally szcerbiak, who pretty much cancel out allen and KG, so its not like lebron was outplaying not only pierce but the entire celtics team for most of that series or anything…

Aug.1 at 9:42 am

Hursty says:
but then they won. So that point is invalid. DENIED…. fu*ker. nothing personal Jukai. AUS just lost to Argentina by 4 after being up as much as 15 tonight. respect to Manu for being awesome though. Nocioni was great for 3 quarters too.

Aug.1 at 9:43 am

BETCATS says:
Joe Smith had a good year for an old person. Leave Joe Smith out of this. The man can still ball. Wally lost his jumpshot, so he is pretty useless right now. Besides Lebron, the only good players the Cavs got is Joe, Z, Boobie, and Delonte West. Ben Wallace can no longer play defence, which is really bad because he could never play offence. Anderson Valegro is a waste of money. Sasha is good, but always hurt. Thats why Lebron is the best, because he is on a team filled with dare i say it… scrubs and he has to carry the entire team every year. Bring him some help or trade him for Brett Farve since nobody else wants him.

HE’S CRAZY!!! Kobe, Lebron, Kevin Garnett, and even Steve Nash are much better because not only are they great individually, they make the people around them better. Paul Pierce should be on the olympic team, and play FIBA rules where he can’t stumble around the court when he feels the slightest contact. It’s like he has flashbacks of being stabbed with any kind of physical contact. Then we’ll see if he’s really the best.

Paul Pierce did play great during the Finals and I don’t have any complaints about him getting that Finals MVP trophy, but it was a VERY close call between him and Ray Allen. I would say that Ray Allen played just as good as Pierce, give or take. Allen played like a real superstar but he’s probably the most underrated player out of the big three. I don’t know how this relates, but yeah its true.

forget the finals thing - that obviously shouldn’t determine this, wade was a ridiculously over rated cry baby for instance. But i have been saying all year to any one who would listen out here in chicago where they all seem to think that the NBA dissolved after Jordan that there are only two guys to compare to Pierce, LeBron and Kobe. (It is hard to compare bigs and point gaurds to everybody else so leave them out.) PP’s scoring is right up there with these guys if a little reigned in this year, his defense is outstanding, his rebounding is better than either of them and LeBron is the only one that really compares in terms of size and strength and PP’s post game is still better. If he is not the best of the three than gotta at least acknowledge that there is nobody else in this group.

Aug.1 at 5:28 pm

Locz says:
C’mon PP, now youre doin too much. Yeah PP ‘was’ an All-Star but he couldnt even get of the bench of the All-Star games he was apart of. Him and ‘toine didnt get any playing time in the All-star games… but best player in the world? probly not. was even invited to play for Team USA? Is he even the best player on his own team? Was he the best player in the world last year when his team won I think 3 games all year? The Truth? Paul, you can’t handle the truth….

Aug.1 at 5:48 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
@ Locz: Uhhh since when does being on Team USA mean you’re the best? What you’re implying is that Mike Miller and Brad Miller are better than Paul Pierce and Allen Iverson, since they were on Team USA last year when those two weren’t? Wow, you are so smart.

Aug.1 at 6:05 pm

James The Balla says:
No but what it does imply is usually the starting 5 has the top 5 players or at least the top 5 positions filled up. For example, Kobe, Lebron, Dwight, Melo, CP, Kidd and use to be Amare… this no arguing here. KG and Shuttlesworth are better than Pierce. But because PP couldnt do anything for years with the celtics. Now he finally had more all stars on the team they did soemthing. I mean PP actually didnt do anything except look chubby. there is no fighting this but he is not the best player in the world nor in the top 20, or 50, or 100 for that matter. And i would take … or anyone else building a francise, aloootttt of older players in the NBA over PP like Kobe. But not only that i would sure as he11 take easily … 20 younger players over PP. Examples … CP, Beas, Rose, Deron, CB4, Dwight, Stuckey … PP is a fake. He was lucky enought o buy a ring!!

Aug.1 at 6:09 pm

James The Balla says:
By the way another reason hes not the best in the world. Its like saying Hasek is the best goalie in thw world. Paul is like ana ccident. No kids want to look up to his game bcause its ugly, his jump shot is from his chest, he doesnt work out, he leaves his mouth open worse than Bargani (sorry pet peeve), his fundamentals are whack with terrible dribbling skills. That fade he does, that he gets about 3 quarters of an inch of the floor is so bad. But again, he got lucky that it was dropping in the finals. What happened the last 10 years … nothing. Playoffs every now and than.

Aug.1 at 6:56 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
@ James: You’re an idiot if you think that Paul Pierce’s play in the finals wasn’t one of the reasons why the Celtics won. Its no wonder why Beantown chose to keep him after all these years. And you are also an idiot if you would rather take the undeveloped Rodney Stuckey over Pierce, right this instant.. I’m sorry to say this but Pierce proved himself a much more reliable and stable NBA player than Melo this past season. And no, Pierce isn’t the funnest player to watch but he gets the job done. Being virtually unstoppable in the NBA finals isn’t as easy as it looks and if you don’t think he did anything but “look chubby” than you just lost all credibility with that line. And what Locz said WAS implying that if a player is on Team USA then he’s automatically considered the best. Brad Miller and Mike Miller were both on the team last year with ample playing time, whereas Gilbert Arenas was cut. I guess you’re saying, James, that those two are better than Agent Zero too? Now skillwise, Melo can be one of the best but from last years play you’d be a dumb@ss to even THINK that Carmelo is a better NBA than Pierce. If you want a good, hardworking, solid ball player that gets the job done and sacrifices the spotlight for the greater good of the team, the smart choice is Paul Pierce. But for someone like you who can’t stand to watch good basketball being played without a highlight reel, you James, can watch that And 1 Streetball Tour crap they still (maybe?) have on TV. I’m not saying Pierce is the best, but he’s proved himself one of them this year. PS: No player is good enough to win a championship by themselves. Basketball is, for the most part a team sport. So if you think that the Celtics, who with incredible management pulled in two all-stars, had “bought” the championship, you need to be schooled. The Celtics still worked their @sses off last year to attain that title and it did NOT come easy (1st round, 7 game series with the Hawks?!?!). They played hard throughout the duration of the playoffs and especially Paul Pierce played with super-stardom. Also, how the hell does the Celtics management bringing in and paying the new players constitute as Paul Pierce “buying a ring”? Yeah… BACDAFUCUP.

Aug.1 at 7:39 pm

James The Balla says:
@Teddy Bear Picnic: Why didnt gilbert play … ummm maybe something between him and the coach. I dont know?????????????? Your hilarious. PP is not a smart player, thats like saying artest is a smart player … good but smart would not be coming to half court mad and throwing up gang signs. O wait that sounds kind of And 1ish right? If Garentt and Ray Allen werent there, they would have won 13 games this season again. 13? lol Memphis had more wins this year, with Rudy Gay i migth add. O and i would take him over Paul as well. Unstoppable. If PP was unstoppable, scoring 21 ppg … o and having “A” good game than what was Kobe and Bron in the first couple rounds lol. 21 ppg being unstoppable. With those weak lay ups. the ones he gets an inch off the ground, and the ball bounces 4,5,6 times on the rim and it bounces in… o and i am not a big fan os flashy. Everyone likes a big dunk here and there … but considering T Lue is one of my favorite ball players. ow thats a hard worker. PP is a b1tch, he is lazy, he doesnt train, his skills are mediocre, he thinks he is still in a gang, and he just bought a ring so he can feel good about his body… o and dont use ONYX on me please. Don’t disgrace Hip Hop!!!

Paul just came off his first championship where he was the finals MVP, let him celebrate a little, stop trying to rain on the mans parade, damn.

James: The NBA players are considererd the best in the world, yes..there are a lot of great players in the league that are not on that team that either A.) were not asked or B) didn’t want to play for team U.S.A, that you could take some of those names off that roster and substitute and team U.S.A would still do just as well. Team U.S.A were trying to build a supposed well balanced TEAM, just because the players that were chosen are on TEAM U.S.A doesn’t make all of them the best players in the NBA. Team U.S.A’s roster is not filled from top to bottom with the best players in the league (considering that there still a lot of great players in the league that aren’t on that team, goes to show how lucky we are to have them play for us), but rather the players that work for the team and help make the team well rounded. This topic has nothing to do with what Paul said anyway, he just won a championship..which is far more important then a gold medal for a NBA player. You’re far off to the left.

Anyone hear about european teams possibly making a run at lebron when he becomes a free agent in 2010? I’d love to see the look on david stern’s face if (big IF) lebron actually takes off to europe

for now pierce can say that,as long as he dosnt keep saying it over and over again

All I’m saying is Pierce significantly outplayed Lebron and Kobe (widely considered to be the top 2 players in the world today) in the same month and on the biggest stage. Gotta respect that and clearly the man belongs in the discussion of top NBA player.

roses, thank-you, finally some sanity here balla, you can not like pp, you reasonably argue that he doesn’t belong in the discussion of top players (i think you would be wrong but at least it would be an argument), but arguing that his game is “ugly,” that he is not a smart player, that his footwork and fundamentals are anything other than superb, that is just really dumb. So what if he doesn’t jump out of the gym, he is bigger and stronger than everybody else he faces except lebron and he uses that to get his shot off. (and his size gives lebron a ton of trouble since he is really the only other competitor lebron has in that area, maybe artest) Yes in the past he dribbled through double and triple teams with that spin move, but would you rather he passed the ball to kedrick brown, or vin baker? doesn’t get off the ground…what an asinine criticism, look at whether or not the ball goes in

P2 is bugging. Where was he last year, they were the worst in the league and he was healthy! The Heat were bad this past year but DWade was hurt coming off 2 surgeries. We now see that he is healthy and everyone in the Eastern Conference better be prepared. Back to P2, clearly the NBA FInals bug is still in him. KG is the best player on his team, so he is not even the best on his squad. He is a solid player on both ends of the court no doubt, but the game is played above the rim these days and he has not ever been cleared for airspace my dude. He got lucky, did his job while the luck was with him, and that deserves much love and credit, but dream on P2. The best right now are DWade, Lebron, Kobe, Paul (you rate them, that stuff changes every season, this year coming up tells me DWade will rise above all!). Joesmoove

Ok so wait a sec… he outplayed lebron and kobe, and won a championship doing so… so why isn’t he allowed to think he’s the best??? I’m not even saying he’s the best, but after what he accomplished, he’s allowed to think whatever the f*ck he wants. Frankly, a lot of people trash him b/c his game looks sloppy. But you know what? PP can get where he wants to go on the court, against any defender, at any time. He takes it to the cup whenever the f*ck he wants. Yeah you can talk all day about Kobe having a sick fadeway, or whatever. But Kobe couldn’t penetrate the celtics d, so he settled for jumpers. I’ll take a layup from PP any day of the week over one of Kobe’s retardedly difficult to make fadeways, even if he does make them a moderate amount of the time.

Paul Pierce thinks he’s the best player in the world, lets get one thing straight Paul Pierce couldn’t even get anywhere last season (06-07) with the worst record in the league Kobe on the other hand actually gt his team to the Playoffs. So he wins a title and a finals mvp with two future hall of famers and he thinks he’s the best on the planet he’s not even in the top 5 players list in the NBA not to even mention in the world. But it’s okay Kobe’s got people across the world that he’s the best player and Paul Pierce is saying it for himselve.

Aug.3 at 7:52 pm

The Promise says:
Well, I look at it like this. Just because Paul hung with Kobe in the finals doesnt mean hes better. I mean, he didnt destroy Kobe in the finals. He has his opinion, sure, but that doesnt mean its right. The only game he really outplayed Kobe was game 5, and he didnt even win that game. And if you remember, with like 40 seconds to go in the game, Kobe picks his pocket and puts the nail in the coffin with a 2 handed slam. If he was better than Kobe, he would have got by him and scored. Because thats what you do to somebody when you are better than them. And for the record, Vladamir Radmanovic guarded him for most of the game, not Kobe. It would have been a whole different story if Kobe guards him the whole game. I think everybody on this site that has any sense at all knows thats true.

Aug.3 at 11:17 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
@ James: Once again you fail to use common sense. Considering having to share the ball with his teammates, 21 ppg is very good. And unstoppable is the entire Lakers team not being able to stop Paul Pierce whatsoever. I never said that Pierce is the best player in the world you idiot, but he is definitely a really good ball player. And by the way, Pierce is to your favorite player Lue as Michael Jordan is to you. ‘Nuff said. PS: ONYX hates you, James.

Slobodan Chutzpah says:
You could see this coming when, some weeks after winning the title, he was still hauling that Finals MVP trophy around like it contained the ashes of her deceased mother. Pierce become one of my favourite players during this season (partially because he seemed like a genuinely nice guy), but he’s seriously letting all of this get into his head. I see an unexpectedly difficult season ahead for the Celts.

To Yann Blavec, who said, “The NBA finals mvp is always a member of the winning team. Does that mean that Bill Russel was better than Wilt?” … In 1969, Jerry West won Finals MVP while playing for the losing team.
