Warriors Strike Back: Big Offer for Elton Brand

by Marcel Mutoni

If Chris Mullin and his staff have their way, Baron Davis’s homecoming will be a little bit less joyful than he anticipated. The Warriors have reportedly offered Baron’s free agent Clipper teammate Elton Brand a max deal to switch uniforms.

Flush with cap space after Baron Davis’ sudden exit, the Warriors have offered free-agent Elton Brand a five-year deal worth $90 million, according to multiple league sources.

The most the Clippers could offer Brand is a five-year contract worth about $75 million - or roughly $15 million less than the Warriors’ proposal.

Elton would ideally like to stay in L.A. and play alongside Baron Davis, but man, $15 million is a lot of money to leave on the table.

Elton and super-agent David Falk are currently mulling over their options in Washington, and there are some nervous people in Oakland and Los Angeles. It should be an interesting next few days.

Doesnt really seem to fit the Warriors team though does he.

seems a bit like Nate Burleson and Steve Hutchinson thing that happened in NFL a few years ago.

Hersey says:
Brand left money on the table by deciding to opt out. He’s not going anywhere. Getting Baron is what he wanted.

Ah, sweet treachery. I love July.

Don’t do it, Elton! For the love of all that is holy, stay with the Clips and make them the best team in LA!

It’s nice that every July we get a reminder of what the most important thing in the NBA is:Money.

Elton is a nice move for the Warriors. Gives them some muscle under the basket but can still run the floor. I like it. Keith gives this move a thumbs up.

Diesel says:
@Hersey - Brand didn’t leave money on the table. He opted out to receive less this year, but ultimately would receive mor ein the long run by resigning for more over a 5 year period. I don’t care who you are, $15 mil is a lot to turn your back on. He’s a better man than me if he can do that. PAY YOURSELF FIRST ELTON

Wow. This is gonna be interesting…

Z says:
Izzo : I don’t know you on a personal level, but if I did.. I’d say that you’re a fraud. 15 mil is A LOT OF MOOLAH. I mean let’s be real, who wouldn’t take a 20% raise to do the same job for another company of the same caliber? I’m not saying Elton will bolt but if he does, I ain’t mad.

Jul.3 at 11:18 am

ciolkstar says:
However, I really don’t like this trend of throwing 5/6 year max deals at dudes coming off major knee surgeries and loys of missed time. Amare was able to come back strong, but it took awhile. Plus he’s Amare. Regardless of where they end up, EB and Gil will get overpaid. Although, I think both will stay with their current teams. Brand’s LA connections will keep him there. But don’t fret Warriors, max deals almost invaribaly hurt the teams paying them out.

Jul.3 at 11:18 am

ciolkstar says:
*lots* of missed time

Jul.3 at 11:21 am

Z says:
Gil is not overpaid, the market dictated that salary. The Maloofs were ready to throw serious money at him and so were the Warriors.

Z got it, that’s how it works.

Z, izzo’s not a fraud, he’s Irish. That has to account for something. Potatos are their driving force, not moolah.

Jul.3 at 11:32 am

Benoit Benjamin says:
They just never figure it out do they? Pair Brand and davis and you’ve got a lot of talent. Not a contender right away, but at least something to build from. Do they believe that if they switch teams, they’ll be able, each on their own to reacj the playoffs? In the west? get together and forget about the money you fools!! It’s the only way you have a very, very, very slight chance of winning anything.

Jul.3 at 11:33 am

H to the izzo says:
Z:I wasn’t criticizing him for it,just stating that like SLAM,Elton Brand does not care about winning.*Put on helmet*

Jul.3 at 11:36 am

Nick says:
In other news, Chris Mullin has challenged Elgin Baylor to a game of horse. And a death match in the octagon.

Jul.3 at 11:38 am

Michael Hughes says:
Unless Brand and his agent are stupid, its a ‘no brainer’. If Davis gets injured, Brand will have thrown $15M up a wild hog’s arse, because the Clippers have no bench. Wouldn’t the Warriors have offered Davis a longer extension if they felt that he could hold up? Besides a lot more money, the Warriors offer a much stronger bench, a great coach and little risk. Moreover, Ellis will be a better at point guard this year than Davis.

Jul.3 at 11:59 am

el-bot says:
15 mil is a lot. i but from 60 to 75, to me, the $ ain’t a thing. i hope elton stays in la with the tiny dancer [baron]

I don’t see Elton Brand leaving to be honest…
I think players in the NBA are starting to realise that the only way to be on a team that is going anywhere in the playoffs is by making a few sacrifices when it comes to pay-day…

Such a “neener, neener” move. I’m ready for Stephen Jackson and a bunch of weird skinny guys next year. I’ve talked myself into it.

Jul.3 at 12:16 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
If Elton signs with the Warriors he instantly becomes one of my least favorite players. Why? Because I don’t care for players who put dollars and cents above wins and losses. Paging Corey Maggette…

Jul.3 at 12:16 pm

Canadian says:
I would think that Baron and Elton would have talked proir to Baron going to L.A. and planned to play together there. If Elton leaves Baron will be kicking himself.

Jul.3 at 12:18 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
Accoring to basketball-reference.com, Brand has already made $81,543,136. What difference does $15,000,000 make at that point?

Jul.3 at 12:22 pm

Ryan Jones says:
Elton will stay. Unless he doesn’t. In which case he’ll leave. One or the other.

Jul.3 at 12:24 pm

Z says:
Brandon : are you serious? like for real?

Jul.3 at 12:25 pm

Diesel says:
Brandon and Izzo - U 2 are hypocrits. U wouldn’t pick winning over money either. 81 million can go quick…ask Tyson, MC Hammer, everyone. Pile up the money while you can. And Brand on the Warriors wouldnt necessarily be less wins than Brand and Davis with the Clippers. Even if Brand resigns with LA, they WILL NOT make the playoffs.

Jul.3 at 12:29 pm

H to the izzo says:
Diesel:Thanks for reading what I actually said and it’s nice that you picked two very sympathetic characters to prove your example.

Jul.3 at 12:29 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Z - Yeah, I’m serious. Check basketball-reference.com for yourself. They list every players career earnings.

Jul.3 at 12:31 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Diesel - “81 million can go quick.” What?! That’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.

Jul.3 at 12:32 pm

BETCATS says:
The Clippers look like this with Elton: C-Kaman, PF-Brand, SF-Al Thorton, SG- Mobbley, PG- Davis. Warroirs look like this: C-Biedris, PF-Brand, SF-Jackson, SG-? PG-?. I think LA is the better choice. And Diesel, if everbody is healthy in LA you are a complete idiot if you think they wont make the playoffs. SMH.

Jul.3 at 12:34 pm

BETCATS says:
81 million can go quick if quick is 2 lifetimes worth of spending. 81 cents can go quick. 81 points is what Kobe droped on Toronto. Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe Kobe

Jul.3 at 12:37 pm

Diesel says:
Brandon - I’m sure $81 million sounds like a lot of money as you type from your trailer, but living in LA and wanting to own multiple houses, cars, vacations..$81 mil goes quick.

Jul.3 at 12:39 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Diesel - “I’m sure $81 million sounds like a lot of money as you type from your trailer, but living in LA and wanting to own multiple houses, cars, vacations..$81 mil goes quick.” Lol. I stand corrected. THAT was the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read.

Jul.3 at 12:41 pm

Diesel says:
BETCATS-
Spurs
Lakers
Hornets
Phoenix
Dallas
Houston
Utah
Portland
Denver
Only an idiot thinks replacing Magette with a slightly better player magically propells them 3 spots.

Jul.3 at 12:41 pm

BETCATS says:
Diesel, what type of elitist sh!t are you sippin on? Why all the hate on Brandon? The only way 81 million isnt a lot of money is if you are fat and bought a $81,000,000 donut. Ask sean may about that.

Jul.3 at 12:42 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Diesel - I know I’m just a “trailer” park living NBA fan in desparate need of some sound financial advice, but you wouldn’t happen to be Latrell Sprewell’s financial advisor would you?

Jul.3 at 12:43 pm

Diesel says:
Brandon - let me break it down in terms you’ll understand. Your manager at McDonalds wants you to work extra hard to make the best fries on earth, but he’s only going to pay you $5.75. Buger King is going to pay you $7.75 to do the same thing. I’m not going to hate on you for taking the Burger King job and giving up the chance to make the best fries on earth. Now do you understand?

Jul.3 at 12:44 pm

BETCATS says:
Clippers are better then the following: Phoenix- Old fat center
Dallas- Old garbage PG, with a not clutch ’star’
Houston- Injuries and abilty to loose every first round series it gets into
Utah- Boooooooooooooooooring, no flare, lots of good players though
Portland- Too young.
Denver- No chemistry, no defence

Jul.3 at 12:44 pm

H to the izzo says:
Anyone who blows $81mil doesn’t deserve to live.

Jul.3 at 12:45 pm

Diesel says:
I’m not saying its not a lot, but what’s wrong with making more if you can. You can always find something to spend it on.

Jul.3 at 12:45 pm

BETCATS says:
diesel, get the fu(k outta here saying that Maggette is only slightly less better than Al Thorton. Give Al a chance and he will shine. Also, Eric Gordon 4 six man of the year.

Jul.3 at 12:47 pm

Diesel says:
BETCATS - Clippers aren’t gaurenteed a playoff spot is all I’m saying. All those teams I listed could beat them out. So its not like Brand is giving up a championship for the money.

Jul.3 at 12:47 pm

H to the izzo says:
The Clippers are worse than the following:
Dallas
Houston
Portland
Utah
Pheonix

Jul.3 at 12:47 pm

BETCATS says:
i guess if you bought the Ferrari Factory, then bought the Playboy Manison, then bought all its bunnies, then bought all the Nikes in the known world, then bought a lifetime supply of hot wings and french fries, plus taxes you could blow it all. I highly doubt anyone would do that.

Jul.3 at 12:47 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
@ Diesel - What’s my supporting cast look like at McDonald’s? What are the odds of McDonald’s making the playoffs or winning the fast food championship? Give me a little more information to with which to make my decision.

Jul.3 at 12:49 pm

Diesel says:
BETCATS - you’re an idiot. Eric Gordon is a round mound of crap that’s going to get his 6′2″ a$$ shut down by every other 6′6″ shooting gaurd in the league

Jul.3 at 12:49 pm

BETCATS says:
well if they all get injured and turn into a D-League team they will miss the playoffs and have a horrible year (see Heat, Miami)

Jul.3 at 12:51 pm

BETCATS says:
Eric Gordon is a combo guard, Their are plenty of them in the NBA. You seem to be a Warrior fan, is Monta Ellis trash. If you like the Wizards how about Gilbert Arenas? Or Larry Hughes? Their is a list that i dont feel like listing. Eric has strenght that will make up for his small size and he will not be rookie of the year, but he will make a solid contribution and a difference on the Clippers bench as their sixth man. Now please sit down.

Jul.3 at 12:52 pm

Diesel says:
No Izzo you’re wrong - Clippers are winning it all because they swapped Maggette and Brand. Clippers are winning 60 games next year and dominating the West for years to come. Brand’s an idiot to pass up on the Clipper Dynasty for an extra $15 mil

Jul.3 at 12:53 pm

BETCATS says:
i am glad you have come to your sences Diesel

Jul.3 at 12:54 pm

Diesel says:
larry huges = 6′5″. Arenas = good shooter and quick. Ellis has speed. Eric is big, but short and slow. He’ll be a good bench player. Never coming close to a 6th man award. And I’m a bulls fan

Jul.3 at 12:56 pm

H to the izzo says:
Wow

Jul.3 at 1:00 pm

BETCATS says:
yes but wouldnt all those merrciless 6′6 guys destroy him too? And Arenas? And Ellis? Eric is strong, he is doesnt not travel at the speed of light but not the speed of Shaq either. And dont the Bulls have a tweener named Ben Gordon? How has that guy who was dubbed too small done for you guys off the bench? Wasnt he 6th man as a rookie? Eric is stronger and penertrates better than Ben does. He will get lots of minutes. Take a bow.

Jul.3 at 1:01 pm

H to the izzo says:
And Gordon is NOT slow.

Jul.3 at 1:03 pm

BETCATS says:
on NBA.com Eric is 6′4, but in real life he is problay 6′3. But isnt Ben Gordon (6′3 on NBA.com) the same type of player? Leandro Barbossa?

Jul.3 at 1:19 pm

BETCATS says:
no rebuttal diesel?

Jul.3 at 1:52 pm

choke_hold says:
be better if he come back to chi town

Jul.3 at 2:08 pm

415stunna says:
dude… shoulda just kept baron at that price, he got a 70mil 5 year from the clips right?

Jul.3 at 2:21 pm

Diesel says:
Sorry I went to lunch. Ben Gordon got a 6th man award when he got into the league, I’ll give you that. But look at him now that teams know his game. He has a hard time getting off his shot because the point guards are quicker and D-ing him up good and he can’t dribble good enough to get his own shot. And he’s too short to get his shot off over taller players. Look at his stats go down as last year progressed. I’d trade Ben Gordon in a second. Leonardo Barbosa’s speed is on a different level than all these guys. That’s why he’s effective.

You can make predictions all you want but until the season starts will never know until then so theres no real reason to argue whos going to be effective in the lig

Jul.3 at 3:54 pm

John E. Sanford says:
@Diesel - I’m sorry, 81 million dollars doesn’t go quickly. Regardless of where you live, unless you have an uncontrollable drug/gambling addiction and Elton doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy. If anything he probably has invested his money pretty soundly. Do you realize how much money that really is? That is tremendous skrill dude.

Jul.3 at 3:59 pm

Diesel says:
Sanford…what I’m trying to say …Sprewell, MC Hammer, Tyson..all those guys had $80 million at some point and thought they were set. But if you offered $15 mil now they’d eat their first born. When you have the money it seems like a lot but it can be lost. I’m just saying I’d pile up the money while I can.

Jul.3 at 3:59 pm

ciolkstar says:
Gil is worth max money as a marketing entity but he’s not a max player (he doesn’t defend or distribute well) and hasn’t proven a damn thing since he got back from his injuries. I’m not saying the Wiz are overpaying in relation to what other teams would pay, but they’re not going to get efficient (or even existant?) production ON THE COURT for all that paper.

Jul.3 at 4:06 pm

ciolkstar says:
Gordon is 6′4″ and one of the top 5-6 atheletes in the draft.

Jul.3 at 4:11 pm

ciolkstar says:
Barbosa = waaaay overrated. He has speed but outruns his own shots and doesn’t seem to change speeds well, Leaving him out of control. He’s constantly missing layups and is very streaky from 3. When your team scores 110+ a night, everyone has nice numbers. I don’t really like ben Gordon as a player but he’s definitely better than Barbosa, who can ONLY be effective in the open floor.

Jul.3 at 4:13 pm

ciolkstar says:
Money does go fast when you spend it like it’d be impossible for it to run out. Plus you got women and you’re moochin ass friends trying their best to spend all that sh*t too…

Jul.3 at 4:13 pm

Dr. J-Water says:
The Warriors are just posturing. They know full well they don’t have a hope in hell of landing either Brand or Arenas. They didn’t pay Davis the due that he earned the last two years and they are suffering the consequences.

Jul.3 at 4:48 pm

Chris says:
I can’t hate on guys for chasing paper AS long as they keep it real and don’t bitch about having no help and then demanding a trade. Gilbert will most likely NEVER win a ring with a $130 mil contract, but he can buy courtside seats at the finals for the rest of his life.

Jul.3 at 5:04 pm

tenorca says:
First of all, the words “Clipper” and “Dynasty” must never be used in the same sentence again. THAT is the most ridiculous thing Diesel said.
I have no faith that the Dubs will steal Brand but I like the attempt and the not so subtle “Fu_k You very much,” it sends to Baron for bailing so suddenly. That said, the Warriors’ new playoff drought looks to extend at least another year or two. Too bad they raised all the ticket prices after the Mavs eviscerating.

Jul.3 at 7:49 pm

Tariq says:
15 million is, obviously, a ton of money. But the difference between 1 million and 2 million is a hell of a lot more than the difference between 75 million and 90 million. Can you really reach a point when you have 75 million dollars in the bank and say “If only I had another 15 million, then I’d really be happy.” I’d stay and play with Diddy.

Jul.4 at 12:50 am

Dacre says:
Sure…Elton Brand can turn around and play where ever he likes…. GSW can offer as much $$$ as they want. There is only a “moral” dilemna if people have been talking behind the scenes about playing together and THEN, players are thinking “wait a minute, THIS is my pay day I’m outa here…”. I personally feel that GSW should buy out Eddy Curry’s contract.

Jul.4 at 3:13 am

webelieve says:
come on elton, who would you rather play with: an electric rising star in Monta, or an aging point guard who won’t play more than half the season next year?

Jul.4 at 8:08 am

Tariq says:
If I were Brand, money would be the least of my worries. It’s not like he’s Boom Tho or anything. So Elton, take your time and think about WHERE you want to play and with whom and stuff like that F*ck getting Super-Duper paid as opposed to just Super-Paid. Let me ask you a question for the fellas: Would you like to marry a “10″ who was a b!tch or an “8.5″ who woke you from your slumber with BJs and loved you? Yeah.

Jul.4 at 6:03 pm

Moose says:
if i were elton brand, i’d stay in LA. Baron Davis, Eric Gordon, Chris Kaman - the clippers look like they actually might be good.

Jul.4 at 6:03 pm

Moose says:
well maybe not good, but interesting

Jul.4 at 11:25 pm

celtics=champs says:
Hmm. Tough choice Golden State doesn’t have that much to offer as far as teammates around him and having a quality team. While in L.A. he could play alongside a quality PG. and a fairly solid looking team. Golden State can only offer him Montae Ellis and a truck- full more cash. Stay in L.A. Elton, it’s your best shot at a ring.

Jul.5 at 3:34 am

Tariq says:
It’s not even about a ring; it’s about playing past February. You don’t want to be mathematically eliminated from Playoff contention from mid-November.

Jul.5 at 8:01 am

Moose says:
and its about actually competing in the playoffs. the last time the clippers made the playoffs was in 1997, and they were still 10 games under .500. but that was when the west was like the east is now.
