T-Mac Doesn’t Hate the Idea of Playing in Detroit

by Marcel Mutoni

In fact, he sort of digs it.

The rumors involving a trade possibility between the Pistons and Rockets had all but been killed this week, but now thanks to a conversation that took place between McGrady and Stephen A. Smith, they’re back in full force. The Detroit Free Press has more:

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith reported on ESPN late Tuesday night that he spoke with McGrady and that McGrady wouldn’t mind a trade to Detroit.

“It’s certainly not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination. It’s not as if Houston and Detroit has even talked yet. But is Detroit interested? Definitely. Is Tracy McGrady interested? Yes he is. I spoke to Tracy McGrady earlier. His basic thing is he’s very happy in Houston but he wants to win. So whatever is a winning situation for him is something he is more than willing to entertain.”

In the NBA, it is often said that were there’s smoke, there is usually fire. Though I’m not quite ready to say that this trade is close to happening, it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.

(In other trade rumors surrounding the Pistons, there’s chatter of a possible trade with the names Chauncey Billups, Andris Biedrins and Al Harrington being thrown around.)

trick says:
but the pieces houston would want would be the players that made detroit good, surely??

Jul.16 at 9:08 am

Sesa says:
Meanwhile, Detroit hates the idea of T-Mac playing for them

Jul.16 at 9:15 am

TADOne says:
Not exactly Sesa. Joe D. really likes TMac.

Jul.16 at 9:19 am

TADOne says:
I know very little about Biedrins, but i’m quite sure I would rather have him than Al Harrington.

Jul.16 at 9:19 am

Hursty says:
I dont like it. Even if it works for both teams. If T-Mac is my favourite player but Houston is my team and he leaves, then who do I support? Since my loyalties are thus divided.

Jul.16 at 9:23 am

Hursty says:
Biedrins almost (if he didnt actually) led the L in FG% this year and plays solid interior D (remember this is G.S though) and runs the floor really well. Al Harrington can shoot from pretty much anywhere but is a tweener forward and thats why he fit well in G.S even though stat wise he wasn’t what he was in Indiana.

Jul.16 at 9:29 am

Nick says:
Hursty i share a similar problem. I don’t think this will actually happen, and i think stephen a is taking a little liberty with T-macs words. T mac, from what i can tell, loves houston. And for him, playing on a detroit team without 2 of their 4 best players, well, that wouldn’t precisely be a winning situation. All the rockets have to do is stay healthy.

Jul.16 at 9:31 am

Nick says:
and hursty, i’ve always wondered, given the you’re a vegemite eating kangaroo boxer, how the hell did you become a rockets fan? was it the drafting of brad newley?

Jul.16 at 9:39 am

Luigi says:
i mean if T-Mac made it to DET. there line up will be PG. Stuck
SG. Rip
SF. T-Mac
PF. Maxiell or Amir Johnson
C. probly Mcdyess or someone they kud find in FA but H-Towns Lineup will be like PG. Chauncey
SG. Rafer or Luther
SF. Battier
PF. Sheed
C. Yao tell me whos better?

Jul.16 at 9:40 am

Hursty says:
Very good question. Let me take you back to the bonfires of the Dreamtime now….. I really loved watching the Ankle Breakers and Dunks dvd’s the NBA used to produce, tmac was always prominent and for his height he would do things that were, well, almost never seen before. And being younger I was always taller than everyone else and wanted to dribble, but I would always play centre. I was like “F*ck that man, Ima play 2/3 man”. Then the 13 in 31 pretty much sealed it. I liked Francis too. Brad Newley was nice and he can play in the NBA but he needs a 3 ball and more ‘violent’ defense. But he was just a little thing that re-affirmed my allegiance to Clutch (best mascot in the League too :) City.

Jul.16 at 9:42 am

Nick says:
Luigi, is Prince sacrificed to the trade gods in your version of things?

Jul.16 at 9:43 am

William says:
“His basic thing is he’s very happy in Houston but he wants to win. So whatever is a winning situation for him is something he is more than willing to entertain.”
You would think most professional athletes want to win; we don’t need Stephen A Smith telling us that. His credibility as a journalist diminishes with every dumb comment.

Jul.16 at 9:44 am

TADOne says:
It actually would be Prince and Billups in the trade, not Sheed.

Jul.16 at 9:45 am

Hursty says:
Neither Rafer or Head will start. Rip will be traded with Chauncey if thats the case since Head is a bum and Stuckey will need help at the point so Rafer is going.

Jul.16 at 9:47 am

Nick says:
hursty: excellent. You are correct about clutch. The francis era was entertaining/frustrating. I hope you’re right about newley. I’ve never actually seen him play outside of 30 seconds of highlights, spot action in the summer league, and a video of him shouting “Awlll roooiiiight!” when he got drafted. Maybe the olympics will be a breakout performance for him.

Jul.16 at 9:52 am

Hursty says:
Sheed has no place in Houston. With 4 other PF’s? I dont think so. He’s too old to be on the block like that anyways. Morey has said only yesterday though that their WILL be roster changes (most likely signings and player cuts though) BUT, he explicitly stated that he will ‘most likely be engaged in a MINOR trade’ within the next few days. At most 2 weeks from now. T-Mac is not minor. At least I hope not.

Jul.16 at 9:56 am

Hursty says:
He’s pretty athletic and still quite young (23) his sister plays at the Institute of Sport and his parents were hoop heads too. So its in the blood. He’s playing in a Greek League and was named 1st team all ‘Greece’ I spose it was and was on the All-star team there so hes very good for a Euro player.

Jul.16 at 9:58 am

Nick says:
I happened to overhear the ESPN producer conversation that lead to this “story” being run: –”damn! titletown USA ran short! We have no content! I hate summer time!” –”damn! What do we do?”–”Josh Hamilton Drug Habit Feature # 452?” —-”Already ran it!!”–”2 minute shot tracing the crevasses of brett farve’s ruggedly handsome face?” –”Already ran that too!” –”Who’s Now?” –”Never speak those words! There is only one choice. Pick up the red phone.” –”the red phone? you CAN’T be serious!” –”It’s the only way! Promise him a bag of cheese doodles for every 20 seconds he talks.” —” God help us.”

Jul.16 at 10:00 am

Nick says:
Good news about Newley. And as for the “minor” trade, from what i hear, it’s just clearing up roster spots. So basically, Luther head and/or steve novak for either a 2nd round pick, a trade exception, or a can of baked beans.

Jul.16 at 10:04 am

Hursty says:
Newley is on the National Team here and he’ll be playing big minutes against the USA on August 5 so you’ll see more then. He’s not afraid to attack the ring and he boards pretty well. He can pass to shooters and cutters but that doesnt reflect on assist totals though since they arent always converted. Biggest strenghs are mid range/international 3 point shooting and court sense, weaknesses (like most players) NBA 3 point range, perimeter defense. He adjusts really well to different sets on offense and is pretty loud on the court when active. Can score in bunches. 6-5, 200 or so at last physical for team AUS.

Jul.16 at 10:06 am

Hursty says:
Novak seems gone to me. WTF was that last ‘conversation’ by the ESPN guys? So confused right now by that…

Jul.16 at 10:29 am

Darksaber says:
Really? Tracy wants to play for Dell Curry and Joe Dumars? Really? T- “Mac Bandages and aches & pains” wants to play hard nosed Ball atop the eastern conference when he might be the most brittle superstar of them all…? Is he still stoned? Dumars and Curry for pete’s sake Tracy, these guys were known for Deeefense when they played, ya think they’ll just change and let ya play Tracyball now?
good luck with that.

Jul.16 at 10:34 am

Nick says:
Hursty: references to ESPN’s summer coverage here, which is generally starved for content and will cling to anything that appears to almost be a story. This likely makes no sense to you, as whatever sportscenter you have there (if any) almost definately doesn’t run crap like “titletown USA”.

Jul.16 at 10:36 am

Nick says:
Newley sounds nice. He looked solid last year for the summer league team, but didn’t really do anything to stand out (he moved the ball well and fit into the offense, didn’t shoot a whole lot).

Jul.16 at 10:42 am

Hursty says:
Mmm. I saw a little bit of him in Summer League but in Aus. theres the kinda ‘tall poppy syndrome’ where if a guy stands out it makes him a target and not a consumate team player. not sure whether that was the case or he was trying to adjust to the style of play or whatever. It was hard last year to watch games for me so I had to go and pay to watch them in an Internet Cafe to get the footage. I saw all of the HOU/PHX game though this week and the Wiz will be interesting with Pecherov, Young, McGuire etc.

Jul.16 at 10:44 am

TADOne says:
Wait. Dell Curry is coaching the Pistons?? Can we sign Stephen then?

Jul.16 at 10:52 am

blackjack says:
Saying T-Mac doesn’t hate the idea of playing in Detroit is like saying I don’t hate the idea of marrying Jessica Alba

Jul.16 at 10:52 am

Nick says:
The wiz game should be fun. i’m interested to see if Greene can do what he did with someone more athletic than marcus Vicinius(sp) checking him. And to see if Aaron Brooks can stop sucking. And, of course, to watch Mike Harris bowl people over.

Jul.16 at 10:58 am

Brandon Hoffman says:
I don’t think Detroit or Houston would be that much better. But the disparity between the Eastern and Western conferences would narrow even more. So, I’m all for it.

Jul.16 at 10:59 am

Hursty says:
Mike was fun to watch and he deserved those numbers. Still its only Summer League. 9 fouls, 6 turnovers and bad assist/point totals is not good. He could get most least improved summer league player if he’s not careful. (If you understand what I wrote).

Jul.16 at 11:00 am

Hursty says:
*Brooks that is. Mike was good.

Jul.16 at 11:04 am

Nick says:
i follow you. “summer league player who has regressed the most since last year.”

Jul.16 at 11:37 am

RV says:
theres no point in getting deep into this rumor, obviously tmac said he had nothing against detroit and would be ok with playing there and Smith turned that into “if i was traded there i’d be ok with it”.

Jul.16 at 11:40 am

Keith says:
Chauncey for T-Mac is the only way Houston can allow this to work.

Jul.16 at 11:47 am

Ben says:
He probably wants to come here for S&C from Arnie Kander, the best in the league baby. Look what he did for McDyess, and he was in much worse shape than McGrady ever was. Arnie will have him playing through complete seasons again in no time.

Jul.16 at 12:03 pm

ciolkstar says:
Dell curry was known for defense?

Jul.16 at 12:58 pm

Sylvio Mac says:
If the trade is made, both teams will suck, but detroit will suck more cuz houston already has yao, and they’ve already shown can play without TMac

Jul.16 at 1:10 pm

Julie says:
While I have the utmost respect for Chauncey Billups, any trade that involves giving up Andris Biedrins or Monta Ellis will absolutely infuriate Warrior fans. The only accepable trade that involves Andris would be for a franchise player. Not likely.

Jul.16 at 1:26 pm

b55 says:
deke to detroit!

Jul.16 at 1:35 pm

adam says:
It’s Michael Curry. Not Dell Curry.

Jul.16 at 2:07 pm

RV says:
Keith, you’ve got to be kidding.

Jul.16 at 2:48 pm

TADOne says:
Biedrins is worth a franchise player?!

Jul.16 at 3:36 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
Hmmm, I like T-Mac in Houston, but a Hamilton/Billups trade would be pretty tight.. I don’t know what to think, hopefully T-Mac can stay one more season and we’ll see what happens. Also, Biedrins is worth about twice as much as Kwame Brown. And if Kwame is worth nothing, you do the math.

Jul.16 at 3:37 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
Al Harrington looks like a f*cking Ninja Turtle.

Jul.16 at 4:51 pm

Keith says:
What’s to kid about RV? Houston would benefit greatly from a franchise point guard to go along with their allstar big man. And if I were in the Rockets organisation, I don’t think I’d be looking at any of the rest of the Pistons starting 5 to be as beneficial as Big shot.

Jul.16 at 5:21 pm

RV says:
Keith, i agree chauncey would need to be part of the trade, but it seemed to me you were saying it strictly had to be tmac for billups for it to work out for houston. That leaves Houston clogged at the point even more and slim extremely slim at the 2/3. Also, Tmac is worth more than chauncey alone.

Jul.16 at 5:33 pm

Keith says:
Ah, a pure misunderstanding RV. Tracy’s injury record isn’t the most impressive but on pure talent alone? Yep, he’s better than Billups. But in terms of value to a team, I’d go for Chauncey over T-Mac anyday.

Jul.16 at 6:07 pm

Hursty says:
Chauncey is great but 1. He doesnt put up the numbers tmac does (even though they are down the last 2 years). 2. He doesnt have the offence run through him. 3. Doesnt draw double team 3. Is great in Detroit- he struggled everywhere except Minny. 4. Is not a superior play creator on Tmacs level.

Jul.16 at 8:32 pm

BETCATS says:
detroit with tmac is a far less good idea then detroit without tayshaun

Jul.16 at 9:15 pm

RV says:
in today’s press conference to introduce Barry, Morey said he called tmac, asked if he was happy here or wanted to be shipped out, tmac said he’s happy here, Morey then said f*ck the rumors then….or sumn like that.

Jul.16 at 9:18 pm

B-Moore says:
Brad Newley?? He the Australian?

Jul.16 at 10:18 pm

Hursty says:
Oh, no sh*t B-Moore- hes Portugese.

Jul.16 at 10:41 pm

davidR says:
chauncy to the warriors would be great, but not if it means losing biedrins he’s the perfect nellie-ball center

Follow the player not the team…
would you still love your parents if you were the son to someone else…?
respect.

Jul.17 at 2:21 am

Keith says:
You follow the team every time. Players come and go but the Franchise stays. Well, except in the case of the Sonics.

Jul.17 at 6:42 am

Hursty says:
Yeh I spose your right…. still like the Houston team though :)
