This asks the question at what age was he in his prime? He was definately faster than Kobe when younger, and that is important for one on one. But Kobe has always had the killer crossover that MJ never really used/had which is also important in one on one. Not quite no contest though.

I’m gonna throw some fuel on this fire. HEY GUYS, on a one-on-one, Jordan kills Kobe. Jordan could post Kobe up all day and there is nothing Kobe could do. People tried to cross Jordan over all the time, the only man to successfully do it was Iverson. And Iversons’ crossover is far superior to Kobe’s.
Jul.31 at 11:19 am
Jukai says:
Speed wise they’re the same but Jordan wins in strength, defense, and hops. Kobe’s got what, a little better ball handling? His face-up shots better but no one does that turn-around fadeaway better than Jordan, I don’t even want to hear it. Jordan just obliterated the league on his way to a 37 point average by that post-up turn around. Kobe would be begging for mercy.

James The Balla says:
I guess im the only person reppin Kobe on this one. I think that Kobe back in MJ’s time and he would have avg. 39-42 ppg. The D is better now adays and Kobe still avg. 35. He has 12 different players D him up a game plus the other teams coach. I seen Kobe one game take a shot over 7 defenders, a coach and assistant coach, LJ as grandmama, and the boston red sox mascot and he still hit the jumper, (might i add a high five to jack while still in the air)

I’m not a fan of either cat, but James… I guess you’re too young to have seen the NBA in the 80’s and 90’s but the era before the handchecking rule was brutal for slashers. Kobe wasn’t surviving “Jordan Rules” and averaging over 30. Ludacrisp. Heads like Iverson and Wade would have retired after 5 years.

Aaron S says:
As much of a die hard Kobe fan I am, Jordan was just so damn good, and although it’s arguable to who has more talent, Jordan has the credentials to back it up. But of course, today Kobe would win all day. SeanB, what are your insights on the matter?

kobe and jordan posseses the same traits… they both score 60+ pts in 4 games.. they both have a bunch of 50pts gms and 40pts gms… but i think kobe would give jordan buckets… just knocking jays all over jordan… and smash on jordan head..lol.. kobe has a great post game and turn around jumper to.. kobe and jordan just have that footwork that is unbeleivble… jordan might win thou…. kobe at 24 years old vs. jordan at 24 years old… that would be crazy…how bout kobe at 28 years old vs. jordan 28 years.. whoooooo!… that would be amazing!
Jul.31 at 11:54 am
stockton says:
I’m going to go with Jordan on this one. Simply because MJ played with hand checking during his prime years. If Jordan played today in his prime he’d probably average around 35-40. And I doubt the Celtics would’ve stopped him either. Remember those bad boy Piston days? MJ had the crap kicked out of him and still torched the teams. Kobe would’ve cried like a lil’ bitch
Jul.31 at 11:57 am
Orion says:
That would be a matchup for the ages. MJ has supreme confidence so much so that he can be a bit ridiculous. It’s a handful of players that’s played the game that can’t be guarded no matter who it is. MJ respectfully can’t serioulsy think that Kobe wouldn’t give him a game. Kobe has no chance of stopping MJ but MJ has no chance of stopping him either it would be back and forth. He guarded dominique wilkens and Nique would still drop 35 or 40. The bulls would win the game but he couldn’t stop him from scoring. Some players you just can’t stop MJ especially one on one.

1. Eboy is looking for his tweezers, so he can find his monkey and then spank it to this video.
2. The video is shot at UCSB, during his annual camp. MJ is a typically a part of the camp for about an hour per day, and then scrimmages against the counselors at night.
3. The camp coincides with the annual Fiesta celebration, which bring over 100,000 people to celebrate the local Spanish history. Also known as the sytematic eradication of the Native American.
4. MJ works at a guess bartender at one of the bars on State Street, and it turn from chaos to complete and total anarchy.

Why is Mike so damn bitter? It’s really sad how sensitive he is when folks compare other players to him. When he was a yougin’ folks compared him to Dr. J and Magic and the Big O. That’s the way the game works. Evenutally folks even said Mike was better. There will be a player better than Jordan to come to the NBA, he needs to realize that.

Mike answered a question from a group of kids, at his camp, where they are expecting him to be some form of a “superhero”, should he just say “no comment?” How is that bitter? Should he have said “I don’t know, Kobe is scary. I probably wouldn’t have shown up for a game if we played” You people need to stop thinking you’re more insightful than you are, because really, it’s embarrassing. That’s a blanket statement, btw, not directed at anyone in particular.
Jul.31 at 1:37 pm
Eboy says:
Oh, and for anyone that actually watched the video, Mike qualified his statement by saying he would ahve a better chance shutting Kobe down that Kobe would of him. Just going off of Kobe’s last set of work, Paul Pierce sure didn’t look like he had a hard time scoring on #24, so I really doubt the greatest perimiter scorer in history would run into any type of difficulty and I never remember any one guy totally dominating Mike in a game, so that sh*t analogy is not even worth discussing. Happy now, Holly?

James aka the Artist Formerly Known as Krayzie Bone says:
I’m coming down on the Jordan side too. The main point brought up about this era’s defence is that the zone allows players to cheat and trap more effectively, or key on primary scorers, which is true. When Jordan was in his absolute peak, it was one on one, and he had his highest scoring averages. However, Jordan still maintained a 30 ppg average when teams were allowed to commit what would be flagrant fouls today on every forray to the basket. Also as mentioned, as the handchecking got retarded in the league, and Pat Riley/Mike Fratello/JVG conspired to turn the NBA into the National Buggary Association with the constant contact, Jordan maintained, while scoring averages dropped. By the time Kobe was starting to hit his stride after a 2 year stint at the U of Lakers Bench, the diminishing fan interest caused Stern to start making changes in the rules to facilitate scoring. Kobe’s 35 ppg season with the 81 point game is the pinacle of Stern’s achievement. Wilt’s record would have fallen if 28 year old MJ was being guarded by Mo Pete and Matt Bonner that day.

Kobe stopped at 62 because they were destroying the mavs and there was no need. the 81 point game could have stopped at 70 but they actually needed his points to mount the comeback against those mental midgits I call the raptors.

Donn says:
Jordan was just more relentless than Kobe..For those who remember those bad boys Pistons vs Bulls series..Salley, Laimbeer, Mahorn, Rodman, shoot, the whole team would literally beat the crap out of Jordan everytime he drove to the basket…but it never seemed that Jordan was ever hesitant to take it to the hole…
Jul.31 at 2:08 pm
James aka the Artist Formerly Known as Krayzie Bone says:
I think Kobe has the best streaky jumper in the league, perhaps every. When he’s off its often disconcerting because you expect him to explode and he doesn’t. when he’s on though he’ll hit absolutely anothing. In the 81 pointer there was a lot of crap defense, but there were certain plays where he made absolutely impossible jumpers. I shat on mo pete up there, but there was one play where he was wearing kobes jersey, and kobe still made the and 1. Jordan makes me think of Tim Duncan in that he is always pretty even keel. If he got too heated he might miss more than normal, but he normally broke you down swiftly in his youth or calmly as he hit his late 20’s early 30’s. The thing is either man could beat the other one on one, but if you had 100 games, Jordan will win more.
Jul.31 at 2:11 pm
James aka the Artist Formerly Known as Krayzie Bone says:
Donn: Agreed. Kobe is pretty relentless too, but I dont know how he would have handled that much contact (I think he would have adjusted, but he would have been unable to do what he does now). The real guy who should have watched those videos of the pistons is Wince Quitter of the new jersey swamp rats.

Sean B: I don’t think its a duel when Kobe checked Pierce by himself and Pierce checked Kobe with the other four celtics on the floor. I mean I don’t think KG and Rondo even looked at Gasol or Fisher. All eyez were on 24 at all times. Believe me, Mike would have struggled a bit too with that defense.

I mean, i hate how the guy carries himself, love the game though, but JESUS, it’s like the tough loss to the Celts just brought back the hate tenfold. Imagine what we’d be reading / seeing now if the lakers had won. Defcon 4 at least. Does MJ need to tell a bunch of rich Kids “not even close”? Really? Miss the attention much bitter guy? Don’t stoop to Shaq levels man (although that would take some work). Tell me how my a** tastes, indeed.

tealish says:
Jordan wins without much difficulty, but it’s a contest all the same.
Agree with Eboy and James. All valid points there.
For me, it basically comes down to a couple things: An unstoppable go-to move, and defense. Kobe has a great all-around offensive game, but everything that he has, MJ has a chance of stopping. Meanwhile, Jordan’s post-up fadeaway is unguardable. His post game will pick Kobe apart.
Now, if they were going head to head in a 3-point shootout, Kobe gets the nod. Yay for lakerfans.

Sean B it wasn’t a duel between Kobe and Paul Pierce guy. It was Kobe vs. Celtics. There whole damn gamn plan from jump street was to stop Kobe. They had 3 and 4 guys assigned to stop his penetration. Pierce has the luxury of playing with Garnett and Allen. Before then Pierce would play well against the lakers but they would lose to Kobe and the lakers almost every time. There is no duel between them it was straight onesided till Garnett and Allen showed up. The only other time Pierce made noise or even to the playoffs is when he was with Antwain Walker but when it was just him as the main guy by himself the C’s were straight missing the playoffs left and right.

Jordan changed almost every facet of the game that we know. He is undeniable, the most relentless, he is without a doubt the GOAT. That being said just let Kobe be Kobe, he is fantastic, he is the best player in the world right now. Respect that don’t burn him down, be thankful we get to see that swagger, that jumper, and that tenacity for more than 82 games a year. Does MJ win 1 on 1 back in the day? Who cares? Does that outcome take away anything from either of their careers? MJ is a showman for his camp, ask him the same question in an actual interview and his response is along the lines of, Kobe is a fantastic player, we played in different times with different rules, and I guess it’s all up to speculation by the fans and media who would come out on top.

I don’t think Mike would have struggled with the Celtic defense, the starting Celtic 5 would have been in foul trouble by the end of the 1st quarter. Think about it… Mike’s GOD MODE mentality had reached the refs by the peak of his career. If there’s any difference between Mike and Kobe, is that the refs DEFINITLY had favoritism towards Mike.

Mike C. i am huge lakers fan and kobes my favorite player, but thats the second straight finals appearace where he hasnt been himself at all. i think some of it had to do with a bad hand (even tho it looked good in first 3 rounds) and a lot of it was the kelts stellar defense. and yes mj prob wouldnt have done superb against that defense either, but he got it done six for six man. and at times it almost looked like kobe was content with pierce outballin him. mj would never let drexler or anyone do that to him.

One thing you have to do is look at the talent on their team once they reached the finals. MJ played on a team with 3 defensive players of the year in there prime. Dennis,Scottie and MJ all won it.(Dennis Twice) It’s unprescidented to have a team with 3 Defensive players of the year on it not to mention the best offensive player in the game in MJ. Even before Dennis they had two defensive players of the year locking down every night. Karl Malone and GP were well passed there primes that season in 04 for the lakers. Dennis Rodman himself led the league in rebounds from 92-98 straight which is ridiculous! Lol

MJ struggled for years before Pippen became the best small forward in the league. Do people remember that he failed to get to the Finals his first eight years in the league? I don’t have a problem with folks saying Jordan would beat Kobe, he probably would. But, Kobe got shutdown by the Celtics because everybody else on his team played like crap for most of the series. When that happened to Jordan against great defensive teams, he lost as well.

allenp. everybody else got shut down as well. not just kobe and yeah he got more rings then MJ had on his age but in this day and time the level of oponents is so high you need at least 2 shoe in hof players to get a ring. and I just think kobe doesn’t get IT saw him play with team usa today and I dunno he has a strange playing style that doesn’t fit in the team concept

Where do everyone think Kobe learned his fadeaway? Jordan. Who has won Defensive Player of the Year? Jordan. Who does Kobe pattern his entire game after? Jordan. Who would win 1v1? Jordan hands down. Grasshopper never beats teacher.

Jordan =6 titles
Kobe= 3 t8iitles and this year for the laker show he sucked . he shot 40% paul pierce pretty much had him, so if paul pierce can have himn i think MJ would have his ass on a plate….blindfolded.

Allen P….it may have took Jordan 7 YEARS, but he was also battling against Detroit and Boston, two of the greatest teams ever, and much talented…not to mention Atlanta. And while Scottie was a great compliment to MJ, he was not dominant…not anywhere near Kobe playing with Shaq, arguably the most dominant player of all time. With that said, MJ would win, because thats what he did, he won. He has six rings, five MVP’s, two gold medals, double-digit scoring titles, and the highest scoring average of all time…oh yeah, also a Defensive player of the year award. What has Kobe done to get compared to Jordan? He may be the best right now, but people also seem to think Lil Wayne is the best right now (I dont know why), that doesnt make him better then Jay…which is also not even worth comparing. Jordan would win, 15-10

Kobe was young then, and Jordan is too old now so… Put both in there prime and we would’ve had a rivalry. There could’ve been Bird vs Magic, Wilt vs Russell, and Jordan vs Kobe. They would’ve torn each other up but it’s a even DOG FIGHT.

KB242ndMVP says:
Name SGs and SFs Jordan had to play against, Kobe has to play with Wade, Carter, T-Mac, Artest, Battier, Bowen, Raja Bell, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Ginobili, Jason Richardson, Corey Maggete, Brandon Roy and the list goes on and on Plus Jordan didn’t have 4 or 5 different defenders thrown on him each night, Kobe All The Way

Face the facts, kids. MJ > Kobe. Prime, for sure. And maybe even when older. 33 year old MJ > 26 year old Kobe.

For those who don’t watch the tape, you ought to observe how many times jordan would go through the whole team. Remember “oh what a move by jordan”? He gets trapped in the corner by charles oakly and another defender and dunks on ewing. A good clip is his best in game dunks from the nba website. It usually shows him going through 4-5 guys

I love the whole “Kobe is a better ballhandler and shooter” thing. Can people stop watching highlights and rewind and replay MJ’s career. Dude COULD shoot. He also handled the rock pretty well in an era before there was a “killer crossover” in every player’s arsenal. Likewise, I haven’t really seen Kobe dice someone up like his name was Tim Hardaway so please kill that reference.

Starks, Gerald Wilkins, Dominique, Dumars, Dennis Johnson, Magic Johnson, Byron Scott, Drexler, Thunder Dan, Ricky Pierce, Chuck Person, Penny Hardaway, Gary Payton, Mitch Richmond, Ron Harper, Sprewell, Steve Smith, James Worthy, Reggie Miller etc etc……and these are only the 1’s i remember. Most of these dudes where known for there d and jordan still dropped 50 on ‘em even when it actually mattered i.e. FINALS!. Jordan destroyed defensive stoppers night in, night out, finals or not. U cant lay a finger on anyone on the perimeter these days, when u face up, no hand checking. Back in the day MJ had Joe Dumars forearm and elbow firmly planted in his ribs for 48 minutes and he still took it up to the pistons. Stiff arm hand checking was legal, hand on the hip as u drive was legal, no flagrant fouls etc etc….. Another thing everyone forgets is that during Jordan’s Era the league actually had bigmen that clogged up the middle and sent guys flying. Back then Jordan had to go up against actual shot blockers like Robinson, Olajuwon, Ewing, Mutombo, Mourning, Shaq(Sub 400lbs), Kemp, Kareem, Mark Eaton, Jordan never played with another player who got doubled teamed automatically. During the Shaq years, Kobe always had single coverage and when he took it to the lane, no1 rotated off shaq to block the shot. Shaq was having games of 40 & 20 on a regular basis in the finals, MJ never had that sort of support, EVER! For those old enough should remember Pippens famous injuries during important finals (Poked in the Eye, Migranes, back spasms etc etc)When MJ won the chips he was the man, when Kobe won them Shaq was the man. How many finals MVP’s has Kobe got???? The difference between MJ and Kobe is MJ did it when i mattered, not against last placed Toronto. Like MJ said, ‘not even close’

Funny how Kobe is a supposedly a better shooter but MJ’s shooting percentages where always higher. Kobe is streakier, especially from 3’s, MJ’s way more consistent. But again when it mattered, he went nuts against the blazers in that famous Finals game.

Why are people even debating this? Jordan in his prime would beat Kobe in his prime by at least 5 points. And for those saying that Kobe faces better players and better defenses than Jordan, please go do some research. The bad boy pistons, the 80’s celtics, the and Pat Riley era Knicks would hurt kobe’s ego more than getting chin checked by chris childs.

jub_al says:
well said Joe A~ those three teams make the ‘08 Celtics’ defense seem slightly above average at best… and kobe couldn’t fight through that… but let’s stick to the topic..
we’re talking about who the better ONE-ON-ONE player is here…no need to count rings or rate supporting cast… to that end, given equal circumstances (mainly age…) Jordan would beat Kobe 9 times out of 10… why? i think it comes down to the fact that Jordan was a better straight up defender than Kobe is… kobe’s defense is somewhat overrated…

I’d give Mike the game winning shot 10-9 to win the game. I think Mike is stronger and could outjump Kobe. Kobe’s got a few moves that MJ didn’t have and if his jumper is on then there’s no stopping him. Either way, ‘06 Kobe vs ‘88 MJ would be a game I’d play a lot of money to see.

Too many people here forget that you also need to play defense when playing one on one - Jordan could slow down Kobe much, much, much more than Kobe would be able to slow down Jordan. Plus Kobe’s a giant p***y.

Many people might disagree with The Greek @ Aug.1 at 8:07 am. Muslims say that Judaism corrupted The Book, while Christians worship a false prophet (i.e. - Jesus). In that way, I guess Muhammad called “bull$hit” on The Greek way before The Greek put together his little rant about the Koran.
