Head-Exploding Rumor: Ron Artest to Detroit?!

by Marcel Mutoni

Yes, friends, you read that headline correctly.

There’s now talk of a proposed trade between the Pistons and Kings that would see the man who jump-started the most infamous brawl of the modern sports era head to the city where said brawl occured.

The Sacramento Bee’s Sam Amick has the thin, but mind-blowing details.

Could this be why Artest was so interested in interviewing brawl instigator John Green a while back? It would be a brilliant PR move if the Pistons were looking to put a package together for Artest.

And from what I was told from one source close to the Pistons, they are. I’ve yet to get this info from more than one person, so stay tuned.

Obviously, were this madness to occur, it would be one of the greatest (and most absurdly hilarious) developments in League history. Which means it’ll likely never happen.

Joe Dumars vowed to make big changes in Detroit this summer; I can think of no bigger (or, certainly, crazier) one than this.

A-ha! Yes! I called it! In an Artest article last week, I said that Detroit should do it! Ok, I didn’t actually expect it to become a proper rumour, but still…

Not gonna happen… Davidson is too classy of an owner. But in the end… who cares if it does? Water under the bridge.

This would be simply amazing!

Jul.22 at 9:16 am

Eboy says:
In reality, if Ron stayed even keeled, this could be a great move for the Pistolitos.

Jul.22 at 9:21 am

TADOne says:
I agree E, but there is just TOO many question marks on this. Joe would have to do one hell of a sales pitch to convince the fans AND Bill Davidson, the owner.

Jul.22 at 9:26 am

Jukai says:
It would be great if, during the first game of the season, Ron Ron got into another fight with the fans. And yes, it would be great.

Jul.22 at 9:28 am

Eboy says:
If he gives them a little more fire than they’ve had I think the fans won’t be so quick to take on a sh*t on the move. Like anything, results are the determining factor.

Jul.22 at 9:29 am

BETCATS says:
why would they get somebody to play Tayshaun’s postion if he is the only starter they should keep? why no looking for a new Point Guard or a new Center? But Rodman went from the Pistons to the Bulls (eventually) so this could work.

Jul.22 at 9:30 am

the Monty Pistons says:
After all, Dennis Rodman played for the Bulls just two years after playing for the Pistons.

Jul.22 at 9:31 am

Good point, BET (about the Dennis/Bulls thing)

My dream team:

Jul.22 at 9:32 am

BETCATS says:
ZBo would be my sixth man and Jesus would coach.

Jul.22 at 9:36 am

TADOne says:
BET: Everyone in the league could use a center, so there just isn’t many options out there. Besides, until he is possibly moved, we still have Sheed. As for your PG comment: HUH?!?! You do realize they have Billups AND Stuckey already. That is one position they have absolutely no need for.

Jul.22 at 9:40 am

Rasheedionics says:
BET: why would you use Jesus as a coach? Wouldn’t make more sense to have him as a player, with all the super powers that he has and stuff.

Jul.22 at 9:41 am

rabn21 says:
can you think of a more awkward position for both ron ron and the fans???!!! i just don’t see it happening. i remember reading an interview with joe d years ago and they said they value character guys as much as just talented guys. though they did bring in rasheed he has been a whole different animal with detroit.

Jul.22 at 9:41 am

BETCATS says:
Tad, Joe said he wanted changes. Billups is ageing and if Joe were smart he would keep a younger core from this team. Rip and Tayshaun are the two best players with no problems. Sheed is lazy 60% of the game, and your Power Forwards is lackluster. How good are Amir Johnson and Jason Maxiell? Stuckey is not ready to start yet, he needs to be the sixth man and season on the bench like fine wine. If Joe really wants change, why would he have the same person running the offence in Billups? and what is his plans for Tayshaun?

Jul.22 at 9:49 am

solito says:
Good Call on the coach BET. Jesus would be a an great fit as coach. He had pretty good success facing adversity with the last 12 guys that were on his team… and you know ZBo and Ronron are good for that and then some!

Jul.22 at 9:49 am

TADOne says:
BET: Why wouldn’t he have Billups continue running the team?? No sh*t he is aging, who isn’t?! I just don’t understand the hate Billups gets like he isn’t a top player and PG in the league? I would also disagree that Rip and Tay are the two best players with no problems. Is that insinuating that Billups has problems? Chauncey is clearly better than Tay, and him and Rip are even as far as All Star apperances and such. Also, Sheed is NOT lazy on 60% of the plays. That is bogus. Tay may get the praise, but Sheed is just as good or better as a defender.

Jul.22 at 9:56 am

BETCATS says:
Tad: sheed could be in the top 4 PF’s in the L if he applied himself. Sure he plays like a star and fits in, but if he was all their from start to finish, he would be starting in the ASG not sitting on the bench. Tay gets the praise because he always works hard and gives it his all. I dont see Sheed doing that

Jul.22 at 10:00 am

d.Y. says:
Um… gonna be a slow news day? This won’t happen. Artest is not Rodman. Rodman was egotistical and hap a need for attention. Artest is just legit crazy. This wouldn’t help the Pistons’ offense for the same reason it wouldn’t have helped Enver’s: Ron is a black hole. Don’t the Pistons thrive on ball movement and pride themselves on feeding the “hot hand”?

Jul.22 at 10:02 am

Jukai says:
No, BETCATS, he couldn’t. It’s my mission to correct every single misguided soul on slam and inform them that Rasheed, no matter what you think, simply isn’t that great of a power forward. No matter how many times you say it, he’s not.

Jul.22 at 10:05 am

Jukai says:
The man never averaged more than 8.2 rebounds a game, and his career is 6.9… he’s six eleven, that’s inexcusable. His field goals are alost always lower than five hundred, his blocks are always from mismatches, he’s NOT THAT GREAT OF A THREE POINT SHOOTER (he’s not, enough already), and what else does Rasheed have? He’s a upper middle tier power forward.

Jul.22 at 10:07 am

Gerard Himself says:
what else does he have? A baldspot?

Jul.22 at 10:09 am

Jukai says:
The baldspot is slightly overrated, and could probably get a player whose value is greater than Rasheeds. So Rasheed is prime trade bait. Obviously, because the Pistons have Stuckey, who will be a relatively decent starter point guard, they’re trying to get rid of Billups while he still has value (he has a lot of it, but its falling drastically every year he gets older). So, Billups and Rasheed are the main components of any trade. Tayshun and Rip, who are still in their twenties, are not as quick to get traded cause they’re younger and still have many years to them.

Jul.22 at 10:10 am

BETCATS says:
Jukai, explain to me why somebody with unlimted range, 6′10, can play inside and own the paint, is strong, is a great defender, is a above average passer, can matchup with anybody cannot be a top 4 PF?

Jul.22 at 10:11 am

BETCATS says:
even through the computer, i smell a haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaater

Jul.22 at 10:15 am

Eboy says:
Let’s be clear, Sheed has/had/still has the tools to be one of the greatest 4’s in the game. His work ethic, temper issues and carefree approach to the game has held him back from being mentioned in the same breath as his HOF peers Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and maybe not in the same caliber as “franchise” type 4’s like Chris Bosh, Carlos Boozer and even (dare I say it) Dirk. To be sure, Sheed has moments of brilliance and will get up for certain matchups were he looks like a world beater, beat to be truthful, Sheed is just way to inconsistent in his brillance and that’s sad.

Jul.22 at 10:16 am

Eboy says:
*but to be truthful And I like Sheed a ton.

Jul.22 at 10:17 am

TADOne says:
Jukai: While I understand your stats backup your argument and I don'’t completely disagree with you about Sheed, let me just say that Slam isn’t the only place with “misguided souls”. I cannot tell you how many so-called experts, talking heads, scouts, and coaches who also co-sign Sheed’s talent. Now, it doesn’t make them correct, but it does make the argument valid.

Jul.22 at 10:19 am

BETCATS says:
No eboy, Sheed is better than Dirk. He is more clutch (half court three v. Denver) and stronger then that pu$$y called Dirk. Dirk is the most overrated PF in the game, and if his owner wasnt a billonare who is the only intresting thing on the team, Dallas would be a much smaller market and Dirk wouldnt get as much attention.

Jul.22 at 10:22 am

solito says:
Eboy: Sheed has a ring, and not as a roll player, but one of three go to guys. So he IS in the same League as TD and KG. For sure not on top of the league, but he is in there. Inconsitent, yes. Effective? HELL yeah!

Jul.22 at 10:22 am

Eboy says:
BET, that’s all true but to be fair, the Mavs are Dirk’s team, have been for some time, Sheed is not that caliber of talent. He is not a franchise guy. He’s great for a franchise for sure, but he’s not someone you build a team around, he’s a piece to a successful puzzle.

Jul.22 at 10:23 am

Eboy says:
solito, you are very wrong. Udonis Haslem has a ring too, and was a huge part of the Heat’s title, so does that give him that same type of clout…..? In a word, No.

Jul.22 at 10:30 am

mamadou n'diaye says:
Calling Sheed one of the top 4 PF’s in the game today is equivalent to calling Derrick Coleman one of the greatest PF’s ever. Sure both had the tools, but neither of them ever put it together consistently. People lose their minds talking about the potential of 4’s and 5’s in the league, and GM’s keep overpaying for the guys with “potential”. At some point work ethic and drive should be factored into potential and not just physical tools.

Jul.22 at 10:33 am

BETCATS says:
yes but the two teams that Dirk and Sheed are on are totaly different teams. Dirk is supposed to be the star player (even though he clearly isnt one) and Sheed is just a piece to the puzzle. However, when Sheed was a Jailblazer things were different. Sheed was the soul of that team. But he has never been fully ‘their’ which is why he is not the star now and will never be the star he could be. If he was all ‘their’ Sheed would only be behind Tim and KG and maybe Amare

Jul.22 at 10:36 am

Eboy says:
The problem is…..the there, BET. And as much as it pains me, Dirk is a star player, probably a superstar (see his all star appearances and compare their stats). Sheed is a star player bordering more on the good role player mold.

Jul.22 at 10:37 am

solito says:
You are taking it out of context, Eboy. Over all, Sheed has been consistent (while at times inconsitent) for years. Haslim never got the chance to back his championship season up, because of injuries. So he might have been there, yes.

Jul.22 at 10:38 am

adams says:
You know, Sheed starred in a movie called “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” and that performance was overrated , too.

Jul.22 at 10:41 am

Eboy says:
Sheed is consistent at being average. He put’s up numbers similar to an average power forward. The elite currently have to be Dirk, Amare, D-West, Bosh, D-Howitzer (if he is considered a 4)Boozer, Brand. That’s just off the top of my head. Sheed ain’t taking none of those guys spots in my world.

Jul.22 at 10:47 am

TADOne says:
Anyway, going back on to topic: until someone else substantiates this rumor, Ron isn’t going anywhere near the Detroit Metro Airport except for a connecting flight.

Jul.22 at 10:51 am

Squirrel7 says:
I can’t believe someone used a successful half-court three as the basis for their argument. A shot like that is more about luck than anything. On that basis Mo Pete is better than MJ after his amazing buzzer-beater last year for the Raps against Washington!

Jul.22 at 11:07 am

Earl "E.Sneed" Sneed says:
Joe D obviously doesn’t want Ron Ron to play more than the first home stand stretch after all of the assassination attempts that will take place….Damn shame!

Jul.22 at 11:09 am

Brandon Hoffman says:
Ron-Ron and Rasheed. A match made in reality television heaven.

Jul.22 at 11:12 am

Jukai says:
Dirk is worlds better than Rasheed. Rasheed has LIMITED range. His three-point shot is spotty at best, people always remember his three point shot because he’s hit some huge threes, but no one remembers the games where he’s airballin gall over the place… his passing ability is awfully overrated, he averages a pass a game. People think he’s a good passer cause he was on a great TEAM, but he didn’t really contribute to it. He’s a sucky rebounder because he never takes position to get the rebound (THIS could be blamed on his attitude) and he’s a great one-on-one defender but his help-defense is the most OVERRATED PORTION OF HIS GAME. Did you see how many mistakes he made guarding Lebron when it came to helping Tayshun? It was disgraceful.

Jul.22 at 11:13 am

Mendel says:
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, JOE D make it happen and will will be flirting with a championship, yet again. Who will they have to give up. With my luck it won’t be a throback jersey, a snikers bar and a couple triple a baseball tickets with a free hotdog voucher.

Jul.22 at 11:14 am

Jukai says:
It’s not just his attitude and work ethic, Rasheed is just a greatly overrated player. Being the heart and soul of a team does not make you any less of a role player. Eric Snow was the heart and soul of the Cavaliers, does this make him a fantastic player??

Jul.22 at 11:16 am

Jukai says:
Anyway, trying to get back on topic, this is a terrible move and wont help Detroit at all

Jul.22 at 11:17 am

Jukai says:
Ron Ron needs to be a huge part of the game. If he went to the Lakers, where he’d be the second/third man, he’d excel. If he went to the Mavs where he’d take the shots after Dirk, he’d excel. Going to Detroit where team comes first and the hot hand gets all the shots is the worst place Ron Ron can end up. Not to mention, how do you play him and Prince together?

Jul.22 at 11:26 am

Khalid Salaam says:
I don’t think it will happen. At all. Gotta love those summertime rumors though..

Jul.22 at 11:29 am

Bryant Reeves says:
Sheed understands basketball better than 99% of the players in the NBA. If he didn’t sulk so much he’d be an amazing coach.

will this be after or before they trade for tmac?

Jul.22 at 11:58 am

detroit says:
I dont think this is happening. Joe’s around the players a lot and I don’t think that he would want Artest near him. Even if it meant a better team I think Joe would much rather settle for an esatern conference loss then dealing with Ron Ron on a daily basis.

Jul.22 at 12:15 pm

Moose says:
this wont happen.

Jul.22 at 12:22 pm

Simone Lawy says:
serious?????????

Jul.22 at 12:44 pm

Jukai says:
God, Bryant…

Jul.22 at 12:57 pm

Dr. J-Water says:
If Ron Ron interviewed him for the purpose of easing the transition to Detroit as Amick cited, why wouldn’t he have just opted out and signed with the Pistons. Obviously the premise is patently false….with that said though, it makes for an interesting discussion for the Pistons. They could get back over the hump if they got a deal done.

Jul.22 at 1:00 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
I think Pistons fans would welcome Ron-Ron with open arms, not closed fists. And I think he understands (somewhere in that Abby Normal brain) that he doesn’t have many chances left.

Jul.22 at 1:25 pm

AC says:
@ Bryant Reeves…. ??? He is good… a solid understanding of the game… but a better understanding than 99% of the rest of the L? I think you are reaching PRETTY (read “really”) far on that one.

Jul.22 at 1:28 pm

AC says:
REF: Ron in the Motor City. I’m all for it. Except for the crazy thought that that makes Prince expendable. Dumars made his name taking in misfit toys…and making them work like clockwork… Carry on Joe.

Jul.22 at 1:53 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
AC & Jukai. Instead of offering an opinion that is based on watching games on tv why don’t you listen to actual NBA superstars like Duncan and KG who have each repeatedly said that Sheed is one of the most knowledgeable players and toughest defenders in the league. Even Barkley said that if Sheed had applied himself he’d be one of the best players in the L. I value their opinions over yours.

Jul.22 at 2:15 pm

AC says:
@Bryant Reeves. Roger. I acknowledge that someone who actually plays in the L has trumping rights on people who watch from the sidelines. But let me offer two points to you… 1. What do you think classy competitors like KG and Duncan are going to say about him? I don’t dispute he is good. I do believe he understands how the game should be played. I had the privledge of sitting close enough to hear him helping out his team-mates and rallying Detroit towards various results. I DON’T think he has a BETTER understanding than 99% of the L. My opinion, of course. 2. Sir Charles shouldn’t be the capping to your argument…

Jul.22 at 3:09 pm

Jukai says:
Yeah, Sir Charles also thinks Dirk is one of the best players in the league right now, and says it constantly. But more to the fact, I have NEVER HEARD Duncan or KG say anything about Sheed’s all-around game smarts. Just that he’s a smart one-on-one defender. Rasheed constantly screws up on double teams and loses good rebounding positions because he’s just not a terribly smart player. Now IF Rasheed had those all-around basketball smarts, he’d be in the same talks as Boozer and Jefferson and Brand and Okafor and Gasol. He doesn’t, so he’s not. And you people really need to give up some slack on his scoring ability.. the guy’s never had a twenty point year, ever… and at one point, the Jailblazers pretty much ALWAYS ran through Rasheed. Not… that… good…

Jul.22 at 3:23 pm

Spaceship Jay says:
Rasheed is on the same tier as VC when it comes to in-game work ethic, true. I would put him in the same catagory as Dirk though, because Dirk (like most euro ballers) is EASILY intimidated. Dirk needs to rent a summer apartment in the Pink Houses for the rest of his career. That’s why Ron needs to go to Dallas for Josh Howard. We’ll see how many guys wanna tap Dirk’s face then

Jul.22 at 3:57 pm

James aka the Artist Formerly Known as Krayzie Bone says:
I would say that Joe dumars is a closet redwing fan, and feels that that nhl style of athleticism needs to be more prevelent. Not enough teeth are lost during the average NBA contest, but a good old fashioned chair throwing contest every 5 nights or so on the hardwood could change that.

Jul.22 at 5:25 pm

Jukai says:
Spaceship Jay, when it comes to TALENT, Dirk far outshines Rasheed. For a very short time, Dirk was balling better than Duncan and KG. Then the basketball world learned that the path to get under Dirk’s skin was as wide as the grand canyon

Jul.22 at 5:28 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
Oh sh*t son, Artest in Detroit!!?!?!?! And Spaceship Jay, how can you even compare Sheed to Carter? Sheed is never scared and he plays hard. I can’t say the same thing for Carter. And Sheed was a big part of the Championship Pistons, don’t ever doubt him like that, son. Carter was only comparable before he left Toronto, which if in that case, Carter was crazy good.

Jul.22 at 5:29 pm

Teddy-the-Bear says:
@ Jukai, being the heart and soul of a championship team OBVIOUSLY DOES make you a great player.

Jul.22 at 5:51 pm

Randy says:
forget detroit! if the warriors would have been smart they could have gotten Ron last year from sacto..and still could have had baron

Jul.22 at 5:53 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
Jukai, AC and all the other Sheed haters:
1 minute of googling Mr. Wallace and I found these quotes from Joe D, Flip, & Stan Van Gundy: “”He is bright and insightful,” says Dumars. “He’ll lead the league in techs, but he also knows where everyone is supposed to be at all times.” Says coach Flip Saunders: “He has all the makings of a great coach. He sees things before they happen.” Bill Guthridge, who was an assistant at North Carolina when Wallace came through, sees it too. “He absorbed everything. He’d be listening even if what was said wasn’t directed at him. He had great savvy—almost a point guard savvy.” Even an opposing coach, Stan Van Gundy, agrees. “He’s extremely smart, ahead of every play. He doesn’t miss helps or rotations. He knows when it’s time to shoot and time to pass. I’ve never understood why he isn’t a perennial All-Star.”

Jul.22 at 5:59 pm

Jukai says:
Oh my god… so the guy who brought in Rasheed, the two guys who coached him, and STAN VAN GUNDY, the guy who said that MVP candidate Dwight Howard wasn’t trying hard enough… say that Rasheed is smart. Despite the actual game evidence to the contrary. Sorry, get me all the crazy quotes you want, Rasheed is not that great of a passer or a help defender. Period. Also, Teddy-the-Bear, then Rasheed Wallace is a legendary player… as was Rick Fox and Steve Kerr and all the other championship players who have inspired their teams while playing minimal roles. If this is your criteria, I completely agree.

Jul.22 at 6:01 pm

Jukai says:
I never question Rasheed’s leadership qualities or his ability to decipher the way the game is going and order people accordingly. He’s good at that. I’m questioning his at-the-moment court vision and his less than stellar positioning on defense

Jul.22 at 6:06 pm

daniel says:
teddy bear, if sheed always plays hard, where is he half the game? floating out on the perimeter, thats where. being 6′10 with a great low post game means you should be down there getting dirty, not standing on the three point line like jason kapono. thats not playing hard.

Jul.22 at 6:13 pm

Bryant Reeves says:
Jukai, you’re absolutely right. Why would anyone care what two long-time NBA coaches and one of the best current GMs have to say about a player? You clearly know more about basketball and are a better judge of NBA talent. I concede the argument to you and hope that you one day get the chance to prove your scouting abilities as the head coach of an NBA team. You obviously deserve it.

Jul.22 at 6:19 pm

mitch says:
if he does go then I hope sac town can actually get some good players in return. Unlike the mike bibby trade. Sheleden williams?should go to free agency! Detroit needs to give up someone good for ron ron.

Jul.22 at 9:53 pm

Dacre says:
Bryant Reeves…quit playing the superiority card - as if you know anymore to downgrade Jukai’s comments….
You can easily learn as much about a player as a legitimate scout or coach, it just comes down to time spent watching tape. The way your carrying on you’d think NBA scouts are perfect at picking players skills and weaknesses… they are no better than an avid fan of the game with the time to care. Its for those reasons, that the olowakandis and kwames will still get picks wasted on them, the arena’s and monta ellis’ of the world will fall in draft pick considerations and teams like the knicks will only get 2 out of every 10 picks correct…thats right the Knicks wasted ANOTHER top pick this year.
students of the game can see players weaknesses - they are there for all to see and if you cant pick them your probably not any good at playing the game either…

The Best Korean Eva says:
I once heard that Lakers want Artest as well….
So, Kings should choose which team they will send Artest to….
I hope Artest comes to Lakers, but maybe Lakers will lose Odom……………………………
I think Odom has more potentials left!
