The Better, Hungrier, Team Won

by Marcel Mutoni

What an absolute destruction last night. Completely demoralizing in every way, sure, and yet, not quite infuriating. It’s never a good feeling watching your squad lose - especially on such a big stage - but against the Celtics, you sort of just have to accept it. They were better; they simply wanted it more.

The Celtics absolutely deserved the championship they won last night. I said the same thing following Game Four; nothing has changed since. The Boston Celtics, more than any other NBA team this season, deserved to be crowned as champions.

The hunger behind it all didn’t begin to manifest ifself last night; there were signs of it during the entire series. The C’s just finally put it all together in the second quarter last night, and once that happened, L.A. had no hope whatsoever.

The Lakers wilted under the pressure - and that includes everyone on the roster - and Boston humiliated them in front of the whole world. Let’s just move on…

So, again, congrats to the Celtics and their fans on the organization’s 17th title. May your city’s pact with the devil come to a merciful end soon.

Will there be a piece titled today “The Unlikeable And Not Clutch One”? That is the one that needs to be addressed.

That was the biggest blowout I’ve seen in the playoffs. The Laker roster just gave up. Ray Allen shoulda got the MVP.

then E he will start to some dumb arguement on who is better ‘Voldemort’ or Harry Potter. Again with the metaphors. Kobe’s kids would know that Voldemort is, but E would play devils advocate because he’s a sh8t stirrer. J.K eboy.

Lakers tienen los pequeños del…. who has the smallest? Pau? Kobe?

I think it’s all about Karma. One of them is Kobe’s karma when he dis Bynum last summer and the other is Vujacic’s karma when he throw up that 3 pointer in the closing second of closing game vs the Spurs.

Jun.18 at 9:21 am

Who WAS the smallest is the more appropriate question.

Wow. I was surprised that so many “experts” were picking the Lakers. It seemed odd to think this C’s team wasn’t a good team. Team was what they were all about. I missed all those bench players when the rotation got tightened up at the beginning of the playoffs. The bench was a huge part of the success during the season and in the playoffs. Great to see Ray, KG, and Pierce all get a ring to “validate” their existing greatness. Ray is a cold-blooded assassin. He just keeps quiet and kills you. How can you not like that guy. Scary thing, the C’s are getting older, but they could even be a little better next year w/o the huge amount of pressure to win they had this year. I guess that pressure helped them to win it all. Lot of respect to the Lakers, they just ran into a machine on a mission. Can’t wait for next year.

Congrats to the Celtics. I’m happy for KG. I never liked Pierce until I saw his raw emotion this series. I’m happy for him as well. Also happy for: Ray, PJ, Powe, and Tony Allen. Could care less about the rest of them.

Jun.18 at 10:07 am

illydiva says:
Despite my HD being out (damn Commiecast!!) and the fact, we didn’t get the Scalabrine interview, last night was awesome! So happy for KG, P-double, Ray and PJ…and especially Doc! Rondo obviously accepted the challenge. Big Beefy…Baby!!! Congrats Celtics!!

Just you wait until Bynum comes back.
And did anyone see that picture of KG kissing the Garden floor? He kissed that leprechaun right in the crotch.

Jun.18 at 10:20 am

Squirrel7 says:
I agree, Ray Ray deserved the MVP more than P-Squared, and his supposedly sprained knee.

Jun.18 at 10:21 am

illydiva says:
Maio, Bynum will help the Lakers if he comes back like Amare and not CWebb.

Jun.18 at 10:27 am

B. Long says:
For those of you who for some reason think Ray deserved the MVP over Paul Pierce, WAKE THE FU(K UP! If it wasn’t for The Truth the Celts lose game 4 and Ray doesn’t get half the good looks that he did. Paul Pierce created almost every advantage that the Celts had offensively and did everything that a go-to player has to do for his team to win a championship. (COUGH)KOBE(COUGH)

Jun.18 at 10:34 am

blackjack says:
Obviously Pierce was MVP, he played incredible defense on Kobe, and he was the best offensive player for either team throughout the series and the playoffs. The great thing about it though, is that you can make a case for Ray of KG as well. It was a real team effort, and it couldn’t have happened to a better group of guys. Kobe needs to learn a lesson from the Boston Three Party.

Jun.18 at 10:35 am

TADOne says:
PJ was my MVP.

Jun.18 at 10:38 am

Squirrel7 says:
Kobe was double-teamed a lot, and as good as Pierce was offensively, I can’t remember too many Finals MVP’s with a 6-point performance (Game 3). & when Celtics were struggling to keep in touch with the Lakers during games, it was Ray’s shooting from deep that kept things tight. Don’t get me wrong, Pierce played well all series, I just think Ray was more deserving.

Jun.18 at 10:38 am

Bryan says:
I had Ray Allen.

Jun.18 at 10:43 am

blackjack says:
Ray was great, but Pierce was the man, plus he’s the only guy who’s been on the Celtics forever. He’s my boy, I’ve been watching him since I was in 6th grade and he was the number 1 pick in the Draft. It’s great to see him get a ring after all he’s been through and he deserves the MVP for his great play in the series, if not for all the sh!t he’s been through the past 10 years

Jun.18 at 10:43 am

blackjack says:
*Number 10 pick sorry, can’t type

Jun.18 at 10:44 am

Happy for the big three, and so much for best of offensive of the league!!

Jun.18 at 10:46 am

rollball says:
The truth is the definite MVP, he carried the Celtics from the beginning of the playoff till the end, especially in the final with only one good leg left.

Jun.18 at 10:48 am

rollball says:
oh, for those doubters of Paul P, try spained your knee once and see how it feels. I had that and I knew what it exactly like.

Jun.18 at 11:17 am

jbas says:
you couldnt have given ray ray the MVP especially since P2 has been bleeding green for nearly a decade. He’s their captain, He’s their leader. and he prolly dimed half of those 10 assists to ray ray anyways.

Now everyone seems to understand what I was saying two weeks ago…the C’s are just phenomenal…period…and to all the celtics fans who are just now posting about the title…kiss my A@#!!! That’s real, where was everyone at the beginning of this series when B.long and I were goin at it? Anyone else still think Phil J. is a great coach? Doc countered every move he made like phil was coaching seventh grade girls basketball…much love and respect to my squad…CELTICS BABY!! NBA CHAMPS!!!

@Billymagnum: You were right, congrats man, enjoy the parade. Phil coached down to Doc’s level and it showed. But if we HAD to lose to someone, I’m glad KG and Paul got a ring because of it. Now lets see if they can double up.

So I take it the Slam cover curse is finaly gone? What a better team to get over the slump, than Boston.

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
This series was just perfect, had Boston in 7. But always had them winning, just didn’t think that Kobe would be so absolutely blank. Had a feeling that he wouldn’t be spectacular, but him Dirkin’ it was just too sweet. To add to the linguistic stuff Eboy & co. had going earlier; Kobe should now be called “Kobeinho”, “inho” is the diminutive form in Portuguese. And since we all know that Kobe is a sort of steak, his new nickname would translate into “Small Kobe-steak”. I think you all agree when I say that a small steak might have all the flavour and promise, but just comes up short in the end, because of it’s lack of real substance. A real steak is big. Congrats Boston you deserved it.

Jun.18 at 12:40 pm

Billymagnum says:
Thanks B. much appreciated…it’s been a long damn time…and I know a bad season in LA is hovering around the .500 mark and just barely making the playoffs, but we’ve been down so long it just can’t get sweeter than beating the lakeshow…and thank your boy kobe for berating his teammates and killing their will all by himself will ya B.?

Jun.18 at 12:44 pm

Stewie Griffin says:
Those Lakers were just not athletic enough and I’ve told from the very beginning that Gasol is soft; it’s easy to score 36 points on dunks and layups against a team who can’t play defense to save its life. But when the defense is tight and you have to shoot the ball, we all saw what happenned. Pau had 3 blocks in the entire series and he’s 7 feet tall jesus.

As the title of the article says, this series did not come down to the more athletic or talented team. It came down to the team that wanted it more and went out and executed and hustled.

P-Jackson sucked! All you Doc haters can eat moldy dog shiz! Doc out-couched the zen master. This Finals is proof that P-Jackson is overrated.

Jun.18 at 2:08 pm

Rico says:
How did the Lakers look so strong against the best in the west but so crappy against the best in the east? Is the west weaker than everyone praises?

Jun.18 at 2:10 pm

blackjack says:
As for all the talk about the Lakers coming back stronger next year and making it back to the Finals, I think that is a very unlikely scenario. First of all, there are just too many good teams in the West that it would be very difficult for the Lakers to make it back. Secondly, I think after the season the Lakers went through everyone is sick and tired of putting up with Kobe. He chewed his teammates out for any small mistake, and you could really tell it took a toll on the Lakers team spirit throughout the series. I think it’s more likely that the Lakers will underachieve next year and Kobe will only make things worse.

Jun.18 at 2:28 pm

a-rod says:
congrats to the celtics.they deserved it.the thing that confuses me is the delusional laker fans who think bynum’s return automatically gives them a ticket to the finals next year.KEEP DREAMING!!!!!!!!!!!Teams like portland and n.o is gonna put pressure on that a**. best believe!!!

Jun.18 at 2:29 pm

casey says:
The C’s simply played with more heart and desire. I’m glad KG finally has his first right and I hope the Lakers take this loss and do something good with it. Kudos to Boston for a great season.

Jun.18 at 2:32 pm

blackjack says:
I’m sure Kobe wasn’t the great family man he pretends to be when he got home from that game

Jun.18 at 2:37 pm

overtime says:
The Celtics were the best team this year. Hands down, no1 else came close. Remember the amount of questions last year? They answered every single one. However, this should not diminish what the Lakers achieved. They arguably achieved and overcame the most considering how they started the season. they simply ran into a better team! great end to a Great season!

Jun.18 at 2:50 pm

Matt says:
p2 definitely deserved the mvp. obviously you could have made the case of ray allen, or KG. and james posey played well too. but paul pierce was the most valuable. he won game 4 with his defense on kobe. he energized his team in game 1. he dropped 28 and 8 in game two. he kept his team close in game 5 with 38 and 8. and he put the stamp on it with a 17 and 10 performance in the clincher. Here’s the Truth: Paul Pierce is the MVP.

Jun.18 at 2:59 pm

Mark Z says:
I think only Stein picked the C’s to win. Where are the apologies?! The fact that my C’s won isn’t shocking, but that most of the media picked the Lakers to win definitely was… Ray, Pierce, KG, Rondo, Posey, House, Brown, everyone up and down the bench played great. Incredible win. As far as LA goes, Bynum does show promise, but that’s alot to put on a guy coming off of 2 surgeries, and who’s shown exactly half a season of solid play. Ask Shawn Livingston. A healthy Bynum, plus some vet front court defense plus a playmaker, then you’d be talking.

++++++++++ Kevin Garnett finally has one
++++++++++++ (plus infinity) Ray Allen too, and more than held his own against the “MVP” Bryant.

Love KG love Ray Ray. But I’m still a big fan of Kobe, and actually I was sad to see the Lakers loosing so bad. But it’s all right, the C’s deserved it much better this year. Next year, same teams, same places. And the revenge will come. Out.

Yup. Not Kobe’s fault at all. He’s only the league MVP and his team’s go to guy. What the f*ck do you haters expect from him? Shoot over 35% in an elimination game? Force the issue on offense? Take over the game as only he can? Gtfo, haters.
