Suns Shopping Diaw and Barbosa?

by Marcel Mutoni

If your team is in the market for a lightning-fast Brazilian point guard, or perhaps a doughy French forward, you might just be in luck. The Phoenix Suns are reportedly looking to trade Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw.

Sayeth ESPN’s Chad Ford.

The Phoenix Suns have put Leandro Barbosa and Boris Diaw on the table in attempts to either move up in the draft or secure another veteran to play alongside Steve Nash, Amare Stoudemire and Shaquille O’Neal.

“I think our needs are pretty clear,” one Suns insider told ESPN.com. “We can’t ask Grant Hill to play 40 minutes a night, and Barbosa isn’t really a point guard.”

All things considered, Phoenix probably has a better chance of moving Barbosa this summer, seeing as how he brings more to the table and is paid less annually.

New York Knicks, anyone?

Remember when Boris Diaw was actually relevant?

memyselfand9 says:
what do the knicks have to offer tho?
marbury? backing up nash? lol.
that would be classic.

Jun.20 at 9:08 am

Pro says:
First? Im pretty sure D’Antoni would love to have Barbosa in New York with him, I’m also pretty sure New York has a high draft pick…
Barbosa In The Big Apple
Diaw should pull a JCN

Jun.20 at 9:09 am

Gerard Himself says:
From what I’ve read, there are rumors about a Diaw-Ford + pick deal with the Raptors. I’m not saying Ford won’t with the Suns, but he sure won’t be starting there for the next year or two. Thoughts?

Jun.20 at 9:12 am

Hursty says:
well, ford is quick and the Suns have a great athletic/rehab team so it could work, both Diaw and Ford have become steadily less relevant over the last two years though.

Jun.20 at 9:14 am

Squirrel7 says:
Do New York really need any more guards/shooters? Maybe they should actually consider looking for a big-men to start who aren’t grossly overweight…..

Jun.20 at 9:19 am

Hursty says:
@squirrel- then Gilliarni(sp) is your man. If the bucks let go of Villanueva they should just blow the whole team up except Bogut and Sessions.

Jun.20 at 9:20 am

Squirrel7 says:
Tell me about it, I had Mo Williams in my fantasy team, and he seemed to miss almost every other game with the sort of ailment a little girl would play through (like a sore-throat!)

Jun.20 at 9:23 am

Jukai says:
Oh wow cool the Suns are shopping Barbosa something I suggested they do LAST YEAR

Jun.20 at 9:24 am

Hursty says:
Bogut is a legit centre and the only good passer from the pivot at the 5 in the east except Sheed (I think) and Sessions doesnt make sh!t all money so hes worth keeping, Redd is over paid. IF the rcokets try and trade for either (not sure why they would though since neither play D) I’d be happy to give up Luther Head for the Blur (suns get an important shoter)

Jun.20 at 9:25 am

Hursty says:
thoughts Jukai? suns man as you are?

Jun.20 at 9:26 am

Squirrel7 says:
Just how slow are the Suns planning on getting? Shipping out Barbosa, hot on the heels of Marion, is going to slow them down even further than they have been since Shaq arrived.

Jun.20 at 9:29 am

Hursty says:
Too slow to play that speed now. New coach and new system is what it looks like.

Jun.20 at 9:31 am

Squirrel7 says:
Then a complete overhaul of the roster is needed. If they’re not attempting to outscore people, they need more defense that STAT and Nash can provide.

Jun.20 at 9:34 am

Hursty says:
Artest to the rescue!!! (since Hill cant play that many minutes)

Jun.20 at 9:36 am

Squirrel7 says:
Marion can opt out, right? Maybe he’ll come back………haha

Jun.20 at 9:40 am

Hursty says:
that’d be awesome. Hear Ice T on Soulja Boy? Funny sh!t. ““F*ck Soulja Boy! Eat a dick! This n*gga single handedly killed Hip Hop.” hahaha!!! then 50cent at Taco Bell? ‘I dont do charity’ on changing his name to 79cent for promo. dumb@ss.

starbury&stevey says:
the suns will never be again that athletic,run&gun-type team.first marrion, then d´antoni and now these super-athletic players.1 more reason to hate S.Kerr..

Jun.20 at 9:51 am

Squirrel7 says:
I think enough people hate Steve Kerr already. I’ve never seen public perception change as quickly as it did when Shaq joined the Suns. I for one was a huge Suns fan, but just can’t root for a team containing that ego-maniac.

Jun.20 at 9:51 am

starbury&stevey says:
@HURSTY..give me an adress.where can i listen it?

Jun.20 at 9:55 am

Hursty says:
to the audio of it? google it man, youtube, everywhere, it was for a magazine or something, funniest sh!t I’ve heard in weeks, I was cracking up.

The suns are idiots to move Diaw. But it is typical for them… Whatch the San Antonio Spurs make a deal for him (Finnley).

Jun.20 at 10:11 am

yeah..funny sh*t men.especialy 50´s one..

Jun.20 at 10:11 am

Squirrel7 says:
Have you actually watched any basketball since Diaw’s breakout seasons a few years back?!

Jun.20 at 10:18 am

starbury&stevey says:
@spuirrel7..who?me?

Jun.20 at 10:20 am

RolleZed says:
suns gon be middle class team next season. I mean denver gon be better than phoenix example.

Jun.20 at 10:21 am

Squirrel7 says:
No, I was talking to ‘Solito’, who seems to think the Suns would be foolish to trade Diaw. I just assumed he hasn’t witnessed the last 2, deeply mediocre seasons that he’s had!

Jun.20 at 10:22 am

starbury&stevey says:
@rollezed yeah..GSW too.

Jun.20 at 10:25 am

Jukai says:
Hursty, I think Barbosa has to go. I have been saying for a while. He’s an overrated player… He can REALLY only play in a fast paced game, and is absolutely abysmal when going against someone like the Spurs. His three point shooting is overrated (when he can’t drive, his entire game goes down), he can’t play off the ball, and honestly, the people’s percentage of him is so high that the Suns can get someone better than they originally wanted to trade him for. As for Diaw, I’m not sure about trading Diaw… I know he just plays like crap sometimes, but he plays really big for his position, has moments of greatness, and is a key guy off the bench.

Jun.20 at 10:26 am

starbury&stevey says:
@sqirrel7..moving g.hill at the starting SF position wasnt the best move for b.diaw.2006/07 wasnt so bad year for him,..anyways,maybe he can play better somewhere else.

Jun.20 at 10:28 am

Jukai says:
I think the Suns are dead though. Nash really obliterated his effectiveness when he decided he would ignore his inside game and practice solely on his three point shot. Sure, he shot nearly 50% from the three point line, but he couldn’t score two inches away from the basket, which meant people like Bowen could guard him much closer and play the passing lanes without any worry he was going to slip by and drive. I saw about five times when Nash made some SICK cross over that tripped up three people, only to blow open layups. Grant Hill played great in the beginning of the season but seemed to stop shooting as the season went on. I can’t explain it, he has such a sick drive, and a mind blowing midrange jumper, but then just stopped shooting. There’s also too much dependence on Shaq… he should be 20 minutes off the bench, but there’s no way his ego could handle that.

Jun.20 at 10:31 am

Squirrel7 says:
I don’t know, I was just expecting a lot following the season before that (guess it must have been 2005/2006 then). Never really understood where the Suns thought Hill would fit into the Run’n'Gun offence, as good (but injury-prone) as he is.

Jun.20 at 10:31 am

Jukai says:
For the Suns to maintain their championship mindset, Nash has to regain his driving abilities (hard when you’re in yer mid thirties) and Amare has to have an MVP worthy season. They also need another big man… I’m not sure Barbosa alone could pry away David Lee or Joakim Noah or a running big man who would really play effectively for the Suns. Diaw and Barbosa for David Lee and the Knicks’ first round pick? (which they could then pick up that European shooting guard). It’s hard to put together a winning combination here.

Jun.20 at 10:33 am

Jukai says:
Squirrel, I guess you never saw the beginning of the 2007-2008 season. Hill was dominate in his role. He just stopped playing. Literally too, since he was injured in the San Antonio series (what’s with G-Hill and his groin?)

Jun.20 at 10:34 am

Squirrel7 says:
I agree with Jukai, I think the Suns might as well gut the entire roster, and start over, if they’re going to go with a new style. Almost the old entire roster was built for D’Antoni’s style, but I can’t see how most of them will cope with a new, slower style.

Jun.20 at 10:38 am

Squirrel7 says:
I saw Hill’s early performances, but I just couldn’t see how, with his injury-record, he would be able to cope with 82+ games of such fast-paced ball.

Jun.20 at 10:40 am

Jukai says:
My father predicted that Hill would play an 82 game mind blowing season then burst into flames on the first play of the playoffs. He was almost right, actually.

Jun.20 at 10:44 am

Squirrel7 says:
My father predicted that Dan Majerle would shoot them to the ‘Chip this season. He’s a little out of touch, is my old man….

Jun.20 at 10:46 am

starbury&stevey says:
it is not a bad idea if NYK and SUNS trade 2/3 from their rosters.i mean with each other.i know it sounds crazy,but..

Jun.20 at 10:46 am

Jukai says:
They don’t really need to overhaul and they don’t really need to change their style. Barbosa is ineffective at the halfcourt game they want to play along with their running game so he has to go. If Diaw has to be thrown in to get a running bigman, so be it. Nash/Bell/Amare still obviously need to be there to have a chance. Shaq doesn’t, but trust me, he’s gonna be there.

Jun.20 at 10:50 am

Squirrel7 says:
I thought you just said the Suns were dead?! To be honest, if they want any kind of success, then I don’t think Shaq can be their starting centre, considering his rapid decline. But can you see him settling for anything less, as I sure can’t!

Jun.20 at 10:54 am

Jukai says:
Well, the Suns are dead in terms of championship hopes, but if you think they’re a dead playoff contender team, then trade away Diaw and Bell for first round picks, give Nash to a championship team for like, 2011 draft picks, keep Barbosa cause he’s young, build around Amare. Buy out Hill’s contract.

Jun.20 at 10:55 am

Jukai says:
I don’t have the Detroit Piston school of thought, “if my team can’t win a championship, they’ve failed.” If they make the playoffs again and again and again, they’re still okay in my books.

Jun.20 at 10:55 am

starbury&stevey says:
@jukai..you forgot who´s GM in phoinix

Jun.20 at 10:57 am

Squirrel7 says:
If they seriously don’t think they can win the title, I can see them trading away Nash. At least with STAT they’ve got time on their side, I’m sure Nash would be itching for a shot at the title, before his time is up.

Jun.20 at 10:57 am

starbury&stevey says:
i meant if i was GM,i would follow your plan, but this is impossible now, with S.Kerr as captain.nothing personal

Jun.20 at 11:01 am

Jukai says:
You’re right, Squirrel, teams are just dying to trade away a two time MVP top ten point guard of all time all-star, who is the reason why people watch games in Phoenix. Really.

Jun.20 at 11:05 am

Squirrel7 says:
Haha, I didn’t mean they wanted to trade him. I meant he may fish for a move if he doesn’t think they’re going to be competitive. And the Suns management may think it’s worth giving him up to get some young-talent in return.

Jun.20 at 11:07 am

Earl "E.Sneed" Sneed says:
Sounds like the Knicks are going to get there PG of the future….but who would be interested in a 6-8 SF that thanks he’s a PG (Diaw)?

The suns have to get maximum value for those two playz They traded the Matrix for nothing. I fthery trade them they should trade them for Ron Artest a great defender and a first round draft pick

Jun.20 at 11:41 am

ciolkstar says:
Hill’s injury was really D’Antoni fault. The guy was playing 36+ minutes a night! D’Antoni is really bad about overplaying players. Shaq was even playing around 40 minutes some nights. D’Antoni gets a lot of credit for being a revolutionary basketball mind, but he’s actually very simplistic. (maybe to a fault) he just puts his guys out there and says run! I remember against the Spurs he was subbing Giricek, who asked “who am i guarding?” Dant looked confused by the question and after the said “Oberto…and don’t let him rebound” Are you kidding? I think he just went to NYK for the paper, CHI was so obviously the better team to build upon.

Jun.20 at 12:25 pm

Brandon Hoffman says:
Barbosa is an open court player. If the Suns are putting the brakes on their run n’ gun style than he’s as good as gone. Leandro was shut down by the Spurs in two straight Finals because they eliminated all of the open 3’s and layups he lives upon.

Jun.20 at 12:31 pm

TheTruthSquad says:
Kerr is just dumping salary again. He and Sarver think Phoenix will sell out every night but the glory days of jammed arenas are over if they are a losing team.
I am sure the deal is take Diaw and you can have LB too. You have to get about half back in the trade so it will be a bunch of has beens like the rest of the team. Like Hill, Shaq, Giricek, Linton Johnson II (who in hell is he?), marks, skinner and Piatkowski. How was D’Antone supposed to use his bench when this bunch of losers were sitting there? Kerr said last year that Marks was a good player and would see a lot of action. What did Kerr see that no one else in the world saw? He saw a cheap salary, what else?
Diaw and LB are history just like anyone else that they can peddle for a buck.

Jun.20 at 12:41 pm

Jess says:
@ Gerard. The reasom that TJ will be leaving the Raps is because he wants/has to start. I dont know if he will go there and come off the bench. I think the Raps could arrange a better trade involving Ford.

Jun.20 at 12:44 pm

AC says:
Ouch… Lotta hate towards Diaw & LB. I’m sure they can be usefull to any number of teams for the right price. No blockbusters here… but they’ll change up a team and create some more interest for next year.

Maurice says:
boris, raja, and amare for rasheed and tayshaun

Jun.20 at 1:31 pm

Jukai says:
Ciolkstar has it right about EVERYTHING. TheTruthSquad is mostly right, but Giricek was actually a damn good player off the bench and Skinner was great until he was pushed off the rotation cause of Shaq (even though he shoulnd’t have been). Marks was suppose to see a lot of minutes but then he got injured the same time Skinner was signed. Skinner trained with the team the entire time Marks was healing, and unfortunately never got into the swing of things. Maurice is an idiot. That’s all.

Let us look at a trade with New York. What if we traded Boris Diaw and Leandro Barbosa to New York (together making $15,100,00) for Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, David Lee, and also swap first round draft picks? (New York’s guys are making $12,000,000.00 altogether). New York would get # 15 and we would get #6.

I still like Diaw’s game, even if he does need an asskicking to get it in order from time to time.. Barbosa’s game jus has too many flaws in it, I’ll believe in him again one day when he can use his long arms, quickness and athleticism on defense.. til then he’s useless.

I disagree with u Kevin. I say get rid of diew we dont even need him and hes a bad player. Barbosa is a way better player then diew and is getting better, while diew is getting worse. I just want the suns to win it all no matter what it takes and i would be more than happy 2 see diew get traded.

Moving Barbosa, Diaw, Marion….It appears that PHX will be the new DETROIT of the East very soon (consecutive conference final runs anyone??) - I can’t wait for a defensive minded-crack down enforcer team to come out of ARIZONA! It’s going to be awesome! We’ll move up to the 9th spot in the draft, take DJ Augustin and just dominate.

Jun.22 at 8:10 pm

Dacre says:
DIAW WAS AWESOME those first few season in PHX - We got to the West conf. finals, Diaw averaged 14 7 and 7 on the season and was amazingly versatile for that ball club line-up. The refeering kept the suns out of the finals at their height.
