No, Kobe, You and Your Teammates Got Shutdown
Kobe Bean Bryant is a lot of things: Cunning, calculating, a winner, and of course, insanely competitive. One thing he is not, though, is someone willing to admit defeat. Ever.
Sayeth Bryant following a performance that saw him shoot an unsightly 35% from the field, largerly thanks to the C’s swarming defense.
“No, I just missed some bunnies,” he said after his Lakers suffered a 98-88 Game 1 defeat to fall behind in a series - the NBA Finals - for the first time this year.
“I just missed some really, really good looks. I’ll be thinking about those a little bit tonight.”
The truth of the matter is that Doc Rivers sent three defenders at Kobe all night long, and when he got by the perimeter D, Bryant was funneled into the agile trees that make up Boston’s front line.
He and Phil Jackson may not admit it - and really, there’s nothing to gain by doing so - but they will have to go back to the drawing board if the plan on escaping Beantown with a split.

This is one of the reasons I think a lot of people despise both Kobe & Phil in spite of their considerable skill. It wouldn’t hurt either one to make an attempt at humility…it might actually change an opinion or two.

Jukai says:
I think everyone but the person who wrote the last “Worthy of your Attention” dribble knew the Lakers weren’t going to take the first game. No way, with a fired up Celt crowd like that… Game 2 is gonna be way different. Celtics will be comfortable, Lakers will be angry. If Lakers don’t win game two, I’ll get worried. This was nothing.
Jun.6 at 1:37 pm
B. Long says:
@Jukai: I agree about Game 2 but as far as Game 1 was concerned I just wasn’t sure which KG and Ray Allen we were gonna see. I figure PP would get his and his counterparts decided to bring it as well which I can say honestly suprised me a little bit.
Jun.6 at 1:40 pm
Jukai says:
I don’t get all this PP love… Kevin Garnett has played flawlessly (save one game against the Celtics) the entire way… He’s rebounding and scoring more than anyone, and above else, he’s still energizing the team. It was actually Paul Pierce who has been playing like crap for the majority of the playoffs. I was worried about ‘The Best Scorer of Celtics History’ more than I was about Garnett. Even still, it was surprising to see Ray Allen actually play. He’s going to be the difference maker.
Jun.6 at 1:40 pm
Jukai says:
Not much of a difference, but a difference, none-the-less.

I’m not blaming the entire loss on this, but the refs were terrible. I’m no fan of LA but you’ve got to be a serious hater to admit it. I couldn’t believe LA had the lead at the half and were only down a few to start the fourth. Sure, the C’s as a team played well on D but the refs called it as if they had an agenda. The agenda? A 7 games series. Thanks Stern.
Jun.6 at 1:58 pm
B. Long says:
That Pau foul on KG was pretty awful but there are always missed calls. If they wanted to try to dictate the outcome of the game with the officials it would be blatantly obvious and I’m not big on the whole “conspircy” b.s.
Jun.6 at 1:59 pm
James The Balla says:
They wont let the Lakers win, terrible ref’ddddd game. O and i dont understand all this PP love as well … anyways, im a HUGE Lakers fan and love Kobe with my heart. But the celts will be hard to beat.

i think the refs were to distracted by the dunk itself to call the foul

Jukai says:
Eboy, this was sorta their last year for me. It’s not just me giving up on them… I fell in love with them, a) because I loved Nash when he was on the Mavs, but b) because they were just this fun loving team that loved to run and never complained and seemed to play basketball because it was fun. Now ALL they do is whine and flop and their game really changed with it… People are afraid to take shots, the coach is afraid to change his rotation.. and the egos on the team are really upsetting. The way Nash now plays frustrates me (he USED to love to drive to the basket. It’s clear he trained the entire off-season on jump shots because he could not hit anything a foot away from the rim). I still love Phoenix, but I’m moving on… I was much more enthralled with Cleveland games this year than I was with Phoenix.

James, what I don’t get is the calls for Paul Pierce to be Finals MVP when Garnett is outplaying the hell out of him. Guess it’s like, a reward for sticking with the Celtics despite the fact that Pierce asked to be traded like what, five times?
Jun.6 at 2:07 pm
what says:
The Lakers won four in a row in the 2001 finals… no reason they can’t do it in the 2008 finals. Y’all really think Kobe’s gonna sit for half the 4th again and get outshot by Vujacic or whatever again?
Jun.6 at 2:11 pm
Allenp says:
GArnett sets the tone early, Pierce carries the team to victory in the end. I think it’s a good combination. Jukai is right about Ray Allen, he was doing all the little things last night. seven or eight boards is a lot of rebounds for Ray Allen. Plus, he wasn’t on fire, but he wasn’t off either. He was just dangerous enough to make the Celtics a very productive offensive team. And I think folks who expect that Lakers to come out and just dominate next game are a little off. Gasol looks like he might have some real problems dealing with KG on defense, plus he doesn’t want to muscle up with Perkins on the glass. And Lamar Odom could not figure out how to attack Perk when the Celts gambled and had him guard Odom. Taht was a big gamble.
Jun.6 at 2:14 pm
B. Long says:
@marcgar: I’m not talking about when KG sh!tted all over him. I’m talking about when Pau obviously threw his sh!t with no contact and they called a foul. Pau needs to step the fu(k up.

@blong: oh… i’ve been saying his stuff is weak since last series. he’s good but he needs to grow some balls and get physical down low.
Jun.6 at 2:20 pm
Young Chris MP3 says:
B: There were calls like this on both ends of the floor though. The foul called on Perkins that sent him to the locker room, for example? And the putback dunk from K.G. on Gasol should have been an And-1. Calls will go both ways, and they’ll be phantom fouls and missed calls. That’s what happens when you have humans out there trying to dictate what is or is not happening in such a fast paced game.
Jun.6 at 2:29 pm
B. Long says:
@Young Chris:I understand that about the calls. But just to be clear KP tripped over his own teammate with no contact from the Lakers when he got injured. Look it up.

Kobe is funny like that. Nobody beats him, but himself and the rim. Obviously if he’s having one of his amazing games, no defense can stop it.
But c’mon Mamba, admit that the Celtic defense and especially Ray Allen’s D surprised you — if only to bring a sliver of humility and likeability to your legacy.
And guess what guys, that wasn’t even close to the top notch Celtic defense. As JVG kept pointing out, their approach to the pick and roll was abysmal!

Dr. J-Water says:
There are always going to be bad calls both ways as long as the refs are human. I seem to recall a couple of clear charges on Lamar Odom in the final minutes being called as blocking fouls on PJ Brown. Anyways, good post Slam but I gotta disagree on one thing. There IS something to gain by Kobe admitting that the Celtics played good defense on him. That is that he would avoid giving the Celtics added motivation to lock him down tight. Ray Ray, Posey, and Pierce have mad pride. No way they don’t read those comments Kobe made and come out with huge defensive one on one energy on Kobe. Kobe is amazing, but sometimes you just have to man up and say the other team outplayed us. Another aspect of it, would be that it might motivate his teammates to try and play a little defense of their own if he admitted that good defense can work! Not just that “I missed some shots, that were good looks” I’m jacked up to see how Kobe responds in Game 2. Be good, man!
Jun.6 at 3:05 pm
Mike C says:
@tealish: I don’t think going 0-2 in 4th is being money. The last miss was a momentum stopper with chance to cut the lead to 2. And can anyone explain to me why Kobe sat out so long during middle of the 4th quarter? I mean they had a full week of rest and there’s two days until game 2! He should have played 46+ mins last night.
Jun.6 at 3:11 pm
Mike C says:
And speaking of Kobe, if the over/under for his scoring total in game 2 is anything under 35 (game 1 was 29.5), then I’m going all-in on the over.
Jun.6 at 3:16 pm
B. Long says:
@tealish: No I think he may have tripped over that muskrat hanging from his chin.
Jun.6 at 3:22 pm
ciolkstar says:
Go Celtics! Kobe will revert into his ols “one man army” mentality if the Lakers bench doesn’t step up soon. KG was good, not great. Pau had more success than I expected, he’s really soft but has great length, and a nice skill set. PDouble was terrific regardless of the injury/non-injury. I’m pretty sure I want the Lakers to lose more than I want the Celtics to win. B.Long and Chukaz are idiots.
Jun.6 at 3:24 pm
tealish says:
Mike C: I’m kidding. But 0-2 will not kill your team, even if it is in the fourth quarter.
And Phil has Kobe sitting in many important junctures of games all season, last night was no different. I would play Kobe all 48min myself, but who are we to argue with the man who’s running out of fingers for rings?
Blong: That muskrat gives him character.
Jun.6 at 3:25 pm

Lol, you guys underestimate old-timers ball. I don’t know how old Eboy is (guessing mid to late 30’s), but my dad’s 50 and he plays in this 40&over league. Those oldies can ball! At the risk of making myself look bad, I’ve played with them a couple times and it’s not that far off. Of course, I played a non-physical game, but still - old people can play. You’ll be surprised.
Jun.6 at 4:05 pm
ciolkstar says:
B.Long I remember you being funnny once or twice, regardless of the subject. But now you’re just annoying. In my experience, the old guys like to dish it out in pick up games. but once you throw a couple bows at them, the whining starts.
Jun.6 at 4:09 pm
ciolkstar says:
B: your not as bad as Chukaz though
And in reagards to the Spurs bench, I’ve been calling for new blood all year. Sometimes I wish RC Buford had a little more Joe D in him.
Its hard to argue with success, but the league is changing(getting younger) and it’ll be harder and harder for this Spurs team to keep up if we don’t. Damon, Horry, and Finley will most likely be gone though.
Jun.6 at 4:13 pm

Jun.6 at 4:26 pm
vtrobot says:
Refs were pretty much as bad as they usually are.
Pau’s clean block on KG, terrible call. Perk’s “foul” when he hurt his ankle (and most of the other Perk fouls). Bad. Ray’s foul when people Fisher was rolling around with Posey near half court. Also bad. They didn’t call a clear one on Kobe either because it wasn’t serious enough and he’s Kobe. Bring on the instant replays and the robotic refs.
Jun.6 at 4:26 pm
Jolst says:
He didn’t have good looks, but a lot of misses just rimmed out. In the case of Kobe Bryant that can mean winning or losing a game.

You’re right, the best defensive team in the NBA had nothing to do with Kobe’s bad shooting night. This makes perfect, logical sense Chukaz.
Jun.6 at 5:02 pm
Chukaz says:
The Celtics are not the best defensive team in the NBA. They play in the EC, where scoring over 20 points in a quarter rarely happens. The Spurs were the best defensive team in the NBA, they play in the WC, where scoring under 100pts in not possible.
Jun.6 at 5:10 pm

And the Celtics did shut down Kobe. They forced him into a ton of difficult shots. I realize that some of those will go down at some point in the series because he is just that talented but you have to give the Celtics D a lot of credit.
Jun.6 at 5:27 pm
B. Long says:
@John D: Saying the Celtics “shut down” Kobe is ignorant. They did play good D against him and forced some tough shots but some people are acting like they did just this amazing job and he was just totally incapable of scoring against them which is ridiculous. Kobe got the same looks he’s been getting they just didn’t go down.

I never said he was totally incapable of scoring against them. Like I said I fully expect him to have a big scoring game or two at some point in the series. But last night they played him about as well as it’s possible to play him. They didn’t let him get to the hoop, they kept him off the line for the most part, and they forced him into contested fadeaways. Call it what you want but they did a hell of a job.

Chris Mihm NEEDS court time, as does Eddie House….whereas Sam Cassell needs less as does Posey. GARNETT’S 18 FOOTER IS WETTER THAN KOBE’S. Ray Allen’s ball control is exceptionally better than any of the guards for LAL. Pau Gasol looks like Phil Jackson’s SON.

if the Lakers missed shots they normally make, why does it have to be “oh they just missed them”, why cant it be the Celtics MADE them miss them?? Ya’ll must play all-star style when ya’ll hoop, no D so you can’t blame anyone but yourself. In this case, even whent he lakers got their usual shots, they had a celt in their face and another whispering in their ear, the shots rimmed out because the release on their shots was affected by the celt’s pressure. Period.

@ Dacre: Are you stupid? Jesus got no handles. BTW, his movie should’ve been named “He Got No Handles/Game”. Garnett’s 18 footers are not wetter than Kobe’s. Did you see the whole game? Probably not because he missed 9 of his last 10 shots and the one he made was the put back dunk, which wasn’t that awesome btw, and KG’s shot looks f*ckin’ weird. Have you seen the weird rotation on the ball? It’s just not normal, and Kobe score 81 on the Raps mostly on Js. What’s KG’s career which? 44. Kobe can drop that in a quarter. The C’s defense is way overrated.

Harlem_World says:
If everyone comes to play, and does what we know they are all capable of doing (not playing exceptionally - just a solid game from everyone), the Celtics will win this series. Why? (1) Defense. The Celtics are the best defensive team in the league - especially at home. (2)Kobe is the best in the game, but KG is pretty damn good too (and too much for Pau Gasol), and the combination of PP and Ray Ray (assuming they both play to their ability)pushes the Celtics over edge. Lakers won’t stop all 3 of them in clutch situations. (3) If Perkins and guys like PJ BROWN (!!!) can match what the Lakers supporting cast bring, it’s a wrap. The Lake show has looked good throughout the playoffs so far, but they have yet to face a defense at the level of the Celtics. No, SA’s defense is NOT as good as the Celts. Boston is more athletic and defensively aggressive than any other team in the league. In a situation like this, I see Kobe reverting back to the ‘me against the world’ mentality because of the lack of production from his team mates - and this won’t win over 7.

Lakers4life says:
Im sorry but did any body talk about the back court violation on Gasol that was not a violation? It just seemed that everytime the refs made a bad call it was always at that critical point in time that flipped the momentum from LA to Boston. I see it this way, bad ref call on back court violation, 4 point swing; bad call on Gasol block, 4 point swing; Paul Pierce’s emotional uplift of the crowd and his team, 4 point swing; at the very least 3 good rim outs 6 points. Lakers should have stole game one and the celtics lucked out. Thats the way the ball bounces. So far the Lakers have always lost thier first road game but they make adjustmenst. The way I see it, Lakers in five.

Ciolkstar, I beleive what the Spurs had this year was good enough to win a championship! But I am starting to think the refs a fixing games again. I mean 2 games were officiated terrible, game 1 and 4. But you know it will not hurt to get some new younger guys on the squad.Maybe like go ot and get Jermaine O’neil, Elton Brand, Ron Artest or someone of that sort. And if Buford will stop the b…s..t I mean you look back to the 2003 draft, they could have drafted Josh Howard, instead drafted Barbosa and let him go? This year they could have brought in Scola, who they drafted in the 2002 draft. And let him and Jackie Butler go for Spannoulis, who they then let go back to Greece? Boneheaded moves, except letting Spannoulis go who sucks anyway. But don’t worry Spurs are Champions every other year, so watch out world. Go SPURS Go!!!

Now, had you made some comment in your post about how the spurs shutdown Kob…oh never mind they didn’t shutdown Kobe because they got spanked just like they spanked the “NEVER” NUGGETS (as in never won a championship and never will). Get focused on the topic at hand dude. If your gonna make an off topic comment then say something like, “Pardon me for this off topic comment, I watched Don’t mess with the Zohan last night and it was of course another Adam Sandler master piece and or something like Carmelo Kiyan Anthony is a BIATCH.

How come noone ever mentions the obvious similarities of Dr.J’s and Bron’s games. Bron just a stronger Dr.J. Too bad he ain’t in the finals to kick some soft L.A. ass.

Game 1 was not a fluke! Boston will not let up in game 2, The defense that sent kobe crying home with a loss, will return for an encore in game 2, believe that.
