Jermaine O’Neal Might Be Using Canadian Dollars Pretty Soon

by Marcel Mutoni

Word is that the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers are in discussions about a possible trade involving oft-injured big man Jermaine O’Neal and oft-injured guard TJ Ford. The Indy Star has the details:

Two people familiar with the situation said the Pacers and Toronto Raptors have discussed trading O’Neal for point guard T.J. Ford and center Rasho Nesterovic, whose contract expires after next season, and possibly Toronto’s first-round pick (No. 17) in Thursday’s draft.

The Raptors would have to include at least one other player, probably with an expiring contract, to make the deal work financially.

While it’s no secret that Ford long ago wore out his welcome in Toronto, is Jermaine O’Neal and his gimpy knees (not to mention, his enormous contract) really the best move for the franchise?

As for the Pacers, while absolutely desperate to get rid of O’Neal, they have even more pressing needs at the point guard spot. Larry Bird doesn’t get as big a kick as you might think out of watching Jamaal Tinsley’s nightly Rucker-style exhibitions.

Joel O's says:
Oh man. No thanks.

Jun.24 at 9:07 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Good move for Pacers, even though I’m not sold at all about TJ’s game. If O’Neal stays healthy, it could be a good move for Raptors as well (besides taking on his contract) - they are so soft upfront.

Jun.24 at 9:11 am

Mr. Bob Dobolina says:
So Toronto would take on O’Neal’s ridunkulous contract AND give up a 1st rounder? Larry Bird is a hustler.

Jun.24 at 9:17 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Bob Dobolina, Mr. Bob Dobolina - Bird was always a hustler. Gotta love his country-ass for that swagger.

Jun.24 at 9:21 am

Gerard Himself says:
if only Ford and JO can stay healthy, then the trade could work for either team. But what will happen with Tinsley? If they will ship his ass out, which team will take him? (Heat?) How much money is Tinsley making anyway? (I’m too lazy to find out myself)

Jun.24 at 9:22 am

Paps says:
I don’t like it.

Jun.24 at 9:31 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Actually a healthy (and interested) Tinsley would be a pretty good fit for the Heat, don’t know if they are interested though.

Jun.24 at 9:37 am

Gerard Himself says:
Mutoni, just read a rumor about the Clippers and Suns, exchanging picks and Maggette and Barbosa…. to me a deal which could work!

whoops, double post…. I’m so quick with my fingers~. (that’s what she said!)

Mr. Bob Dobolina says:
Lz - Cphfinest3, You’ve just won “Know Your Obscure 1990’s West Coast Hip Hop Songs!”
Oh, and this trade still sucks.

Jun.24 at 9:51 am

TADOne says:
Man, how quickly people forget JO was a 20/10 beast just 2 years ago.

Jun.24 at 9:53 am

Mr. Bob Dobolina says:
..and a few years before THAT he was riding the bench in Portland. Maybe a trade wouldl be a good thing for JO?

Jun.24 at 10:02 am

Sesa says:
20/10 who get dunked on by Dwayne Wade

Jun.24 at 10:03 am

Froggiestyle says:
Good lord, why on earth is Rosho still in anyone’s rotation? Is it like illegal or financially impossible to cut his weak a$$ once and for all? He needs to be serving me a taco or burger somewhere ferchrissake :)

Jun.24 at 10:04 am

H to the izzo says:
Sesa:And that’s what’s really important.

Jun.24 at 10:10 am

Gerard Himself says:
Rasho, bigs will always have a jon in the League, and let’s be honest here: there are worse back-centers in the NBA than Rasho. He can score a little.

Jun.24 at 10:10 am

Gerard Himself says:
man, I can’t seem to type today.

Jun.24 at 10:10 am

Squirrel7 says:
Wade taking it to JO? Are you sure there would be enough medics on hand to deal with the fallout of that scenario?!

Jun.24 at 10:11 am

Robbi says:
Yeah, but he ain’t healthy. You can’t really average 20/10 from the bench.

Jun.24 at 10:13 am

Robbi says:
And Rasho saved won me my fantasy league title! Agree with Gerard, there are worse back-up centers out there. Of course, Jason Collins is an exception cos he STARTS!!!!!

Jun.24 at 10:14 am

Daniel says:
Just don’t give up the pick, please don’t give up the pick.

Jun.24 at 10:15 am

Gerard Himself says:
lol Robbi! In fact, since the Nets traded him to the Grizzlies, he hardly plays anymore….

Jun.24 at 10:17 am

Froggiestyle says:
Dudes, all fantasy talks aside, you ever see Rosho play? He’s like a more down-syndrome looking version of S. Bradley - EVERYONE dunks on him and he will never get you a big board or shot when you need it - now if it’s garbage your talking about he’s yo boyyyyy :P

Jun.24 at 10:17 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Thx, for the award Bob Dob.
I really don’t like what any of the players involved in this deal can bring to the (treatment) table.
O’Neal might have averaged 20/10 two years ago, but so did that other O’Neal. Neither of them will ever do it again.

Jun.24 at 10:18 am

Gerard Himself says:
Feoggie=hater hahahaha ;)

Jun.24 at 10:18 am

Gerard Himself says:
since when do smileys work here?

Jun.24 at 10:23 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Best thing about Rasho’s game is his sharp elbows.

Jun.24 at 10:24 am

TADOne says:
Trust me; If JO is healthy, and the training staff on the Pacers seem to think so, he could easily average 20/10. I would never say that he couldn’t do it again.

Jun.24 at 10:26 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
TAD; JO has a lot of milage, mark my words he’ll never be 20/10-healthy again. If the Pacers staff think he’s so healthy, then why are they shopping him?

Jun.24 at 10:27 am

Squirrel7 says:
That’s a big IF though TADOne, that’s like saying if Kerry Kittles had been healthy, he could’ve been relevant.

Jun.24 at 10:28 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Gerard; Smileys only works for girlz, hugz!

Jun.24 at 10:29 am

Gerard Himself says:
Jermaine used to be pretty good, but that also had to with the rest of the team; Tito, Michael, Marlon and Jackie. Don’t blame it on the boogie.

Jun.24 at 10:32 am

Gerard Himself says:
damn Lz, that’s harsh. For a girl I’ve got a PHD. (oh and Squirrel, Kittles WAS relevant in his two healthy seasons…. I’m not making a point here, I realize that)

Jun.24 at 10:34 am

Syk says:
rasho isn’t as bad as everyone here is saying he is. When he gets playing time he’s actually pretty good. Better than busted ass Barnagni.

Jun.24 at 10:35 am

Squirrel7 says:
No, I mean Kittles had the potential to be a decent player in the L, but no-one will remember him due to him being constantly plagued by injuries. In the same way JO could’ve been a consistent 20/10 power-forward, but for his knee-problems.

Jun.24 at 10:59 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Gerardine (hehehe); just jokin’ just never liked the whole smiley-trend. Good work on the PHD, I’m working on my Master. Looks like I wont have to use/finish it however. But kind of want too anyways, hate unfinished business.

Jun.24 at 11:01 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
And true enough; Don’t blame it on the boogie. Blame it on Latoya!

Jun.24 at 11:07 am

TADOne says:
They are shopping him because of his huge contract and the fact that there still is an “if” as far as him being healthy. Then again, that is on any player wo have had knee injuries. I don’t think he has the mileage on him that everyone thinks though. Remember, his first four years in Portland he played behind and learned from Rasheed. His last 2 seasons have been basically inactive, so if his rehab keeps going as is, he should be fine. He hasn’t lost his skills because he was playing at an All Star level before the injury.

Jun.24 at 11:14 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
TAD; can see where you come from concerning the milage, don’t really know whether I agree or not?! Haven’t seen to many Pacers games the last couple of years, so you are probably more qualified on the matter. Just remember that I thought he looked old (relying on his jumpshot, not mixing it up too much inside) the last couple of times I saw him play - He might have played hurt though. Anyways whether his mileage is an issue or not, a knee injury at this stage of his career will rob him of some mobility. Not to sound like a d!ck, but I’ll bet you he’ll never average 20/10 again.

Jun.24 at 11:18 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Is Eboy actually working today?

Jun.24 at 11:34 am

TADOne says:
LZ: Funny thing is, I don’t even like JO. I just figured I would throw out a counter argument since everyone seemed to be sh*tting on him in the comments. Do I think he will be a 20/10 guy again? Not sure. Do I think, if healthy, he could be there? Absolutely. He is, after all, playing in the East.

Jun.24 at 11:40 am

Gerard Himself says:
LZ, I meant something different with the PHD comment. Yup, I’m childish like that, hehe

Jun.24 at 11:42 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
TAD; don’t particularly like JO either, but no doubt he used to be a very good player. The East argument is a good one.

Jun.24 at 11:45 am

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Gerard; Hehe.. Cool. Then please enlighten me, PHD? (Phat Horse D!ck?)

Jun.24 at 11:45 am

Tom says:
There is too much uncertainty with this deal to make it worthwhile……I’d much rather see Ford for Magette, the salaries match and raps desperately need a guard who can take it to the rim.

Jun.24 at 11:49 am

Jared says:
Tdot needs interior toughness, which JO could possibly provide if healthy, and the white team needs a 1, which TJ could possibly provide if healthy…whats the issue?

Jun.24 at 11:56 am

Shooter#9 says:
can’t believe colangelo will give TJ, rasho AND a 1st round for just jermaine.
unbelievable.

Jun.24 at 11:59 am

DP says:
JO has been played out since 04. He was one of those players who has hit the top of mountain and now he is back down to ground zero. T.J. ford? I love the man’s heart but are they serious. With his past injuries I wouldn’t even think of giving this cat a practice jersey. D.J. augustin? anybody?

Jun.24 at 12:00 pm

Gerard Himself says:
*Pretty Huge…. right!

Jun.24 at 12:02 pm

DP says:
Bosh and JO! that sh*t still doesn’t even give me goosebumps. That’s bad when you have one guy who may have just hit his prime and one who’s prime was left back at the Palace of Auburn Hills. hilarious stuff.

Jun.24 at 12:02 pm

B. Long says:
Does anyone else remember Larry’s press conf. last year when he publicly asked his players not to hang out with people with guns and drugs or something along those lines? Larry is the best. I don’t care if he was a Celtic.

Jun.24 at 12:05 pm

B. Long says:
I can see J.O. getting his groove back in Toronto similar to how C-Webb did in Sactown. I can also see his leg fall off trying to keep up with Jose Calderon.

Jun.24 at 12:12 pm

Marcel Mutoni says:
for what it’s worth, yahoo! sports is reporting that the proposed deal is off the table: sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=ArmVy3iytPL6mEHKNBtd3FG8vLYF?slug=aw-tradeoff062308&prov=yhoo&type=lgns

Jun.24 at 12:13 pm

Holly MacKenzie says:
I’ve heard this idea has since fell through. Health concerns on both sides, is the reasoning I was told. I guess we shall see!

Jun.24 at 12:14 pm

TADOne says:
No surprise.

Jun.24 at 12:14 pm

DP says:
Jose is not a good starter. He flourishes when he comes off the bench to relieve T.J. But I believe if the Raps give him a chance, he could be the point guard of the future for that squad. and B.L., J.O. is no where close to what C-webb was this time in his career. C-Webb didn’t have those knee problems when he first arrived on his new team. J.O. does. I just don’t see if working out. Two weak ass big men makes a weak ass front-court. Lamar and Pau, I hope you mothaf*ckers are hearing my words. play wit it.

Jun.24 at 12:34 pm

Mr. 416 says:
Ya um…. we don’t need J.O. and his bad knees.
Also the City of Toronto just passed a law banning hand guns so his listed playing weight will come down even further now, since he got stuck for his chain last Caribanna >:(

Jun.24 at 12:51 pm

canadian says:
When can the trades begin?

Jun.24 at 12:59 pm

B. Long says:
@DP:JO is still relatively young and depending on his knee, which is a big if, I definitely feel like he still could have about 4 good years of ball left in him.

Jun.24 at 1:04 pm

niQ says:
altho this wiill help bosh.. if JO is always injured it wont help much

Jun.24 at 1:11 pm

Matthew says:
not a good trade, JO is 2 expensive and is usually injured, it would be good 2 get rid of ford, but it wouldn’t be good 2 get rid of a 1st round pick

Jermaine O’Neals forehead is to his head what Canada is to the States: A disability.

Jun.24 at 1:59 pm

Trade TJ to the longhorns.

Jun.24 at 2:02 pm

WCR says:
If the Raptors are going to make it past the first round, they are going to have to make a deal. They need to get that second All-star. If you want to be a serious contender in the L, you need AT LEAST 2 All-Stars. Toronto has one great player surrounded by a bunch of skilled players, but nobody who can really get their own shot off and create. I dont know if JO is the key because of the aforementioned comments about his knee, which are definitely true. But Colangelo is going to have to make a big move. I think someone like Richard Jefferson or Antawn Jamison would be perfect. but again, easier said then done.

lol, now that’s an awesome front-line. didn’t you guys run an article with an interview with O’Neal and Granger about how they were gonna come back strong next year? has that idea fallen through? i thought it was gonna be pretty hard for the pacers to find a trading partner….

Jun.24 at 2:35 pm

sab says:
calderon-kapono-bosh-bargnani-o’neal
that’s not a bad starting 5 - calderon doesn’t have to share with tj, an NBA 3-point champion, a multiple all-star, no.1 pick and another multiple all-star.
could i sound MORE canadian? scary…

Jun.24 at 5:42 pm

what says:
I don’t get how this is bad for the Raptors… sure JO had a bad year last year, but he’s been a 20-10 guy since he came to Indiana, he doesn’t have to carry the entire load in Toronto, and most importantly all the Raptors have to give up is a backup point guard. Who cares if he gets paid half the GDP of Canada this year and next, in terms of talent that’s nearly as lopsided as the Gasol trade. How can you not do it if you are Toronto?

Jun.24 at 5:50 pm

TalenTed says:
Damn..Jermaine need to get up outta there quick before his career die. Right now it’s in critical condition

Jun.24 at 5:52 pm

Sam Mitchell's Conscience says:
This trade was never happening. It was just to let other NBA teams know that both teams are serious about trading some key pieces.

Jun.24 at 6:51 pm

Baljit says:
Good move for the raps because everyone knows they want to play Calderon who is a true point guard getting better and Bosh is too weak up top and JO is oviously a better scorer defender rebounder then Rasho. DO IT .

Jun.24 at 10:04 pm

Jess says:
I dont know about this trade either, I dont know if JO will stay healthy and can he come to terms with the fact that this is Bosh’s team. The Raps are going to make changes in the off-season..thats a given, but I dont know about this one. However, the Raps do need another scorer to shoulder some of CB’s load. I agree with you WCR, Jamison would be amazing back in a Raptors uni..although I dont see it happening - unfortunatelty. What about Marion opting out of his final year with Miami, and his relationship with Colangelo? Think it could work?

Jun.24 at 11:34 pm

TORONTO SHOULD DO A TRADE UP, TJ FORD for BARBOSA…maybe include other players to even out the contract situation. Barbosa wants to start and Ford wants to win.

they shud do this without the draft picks

If O’Neal remains healthy, this is a STEAL for the Raptors. Casual fans forget, Jermaine was 3rd in MVP voting in 2003-2004. He was the best player on the NBA’s best team (by record).

Oneal said he been playing on one knee for almost 3 years!! imagine how he’s this upcoming season with a healthy knee.
