Flip’s Replacement: Mike Woodson?
Hello! Didn’t see this one coming.
According to Sekou Smith of the AJC, the Pistons are interested in discussing their vacancy at head coach with Mike Woodson.
According to my spy the Detroit Pistons have asked for permission to speak with Hawks coach Mike Woodson (that’s his title for at least the next 26 days or so unless something breaks before the end of the month) about their vacant coaching position.
Solid reports out of Detroit have Pistons assistant Michael Curry lined up for the job. But the Pistons have apparently covered their bases if that doesn’t work out by contacting the representative of Woodson, who was the lead assistant on Larry Brown’s staff when the Pistons won the NBA title in 2004.
Even though Woodson isn’t considered a coaching genius by any stretch of the imagination, as Sekou points out, he has the respect and admiration of the players on the Pistons roster. Which is more than Flip Saunders could ever have claimed.
Michael Curry is reportedly also being strongly considered for the gig.

Maybe you guys see it differently than I did, Woody looked kinda confused during Boston series and Atlanta was only successful when it played orgainzed streetball….but Michael Curry isnt a much better choice either

what made them think flip ever woulda been a good coach for them in the first place? he had the same track record as KG in the playoffs and he was brought in to coach a championship team? redic. Woodson actually has a pretty pedigree coming into the job then flip did. Anyway I guess now that the top white coach is gone teams are looking at black coaches.

To me, you can insert any dude in a suit on the Pistons sidelines. It has become clear that they are going to play as hard as they want, whenever they want, so who cares who the “coach” is. He’ll just be the fall guy when they don’t win…

All your Tad. As far as the Pistons are concerned while its clear they’ve been no worse than the 2nd best team in the East the past several years, it’s time to try something different. They have some good pieces in Stuckey and Maxiell, so they can start there.

I think Mike Woodson is good coach. The Pistons don’t have enough low-post offense to win a Championship. That’s their problem and they need to address that this off-season.
