Wizards Extend Season, Gilbert Ends His

by Marcel Mutoni

Washington staved off elimination last night, and they have Caron Butler’s tuff (get it?) driving layup to thank for the series going back to Washington. LeBron James could not convert on the game-winning attempt - and yes, I know there was some contact on the play, but no reasonable human being would’ve or should’ve blown the whistle there.

(One thing about LeBron: He might be the only player in League history that consistently gets to the rack in game-winning situations. When teams play him straight up, and he’s not forced to give up the pill, James almost always gets a layup attempt. I can’t think of another player who has ever managed to do this before. Jordan, Kobe, Bird, whoever … they’ve always relied on their jumpers at money time. Must be nice to be 6-8 and about 260 pounds.)

Over on the Wizards’ side, Gilbert Arenas announced prior to Game 5 that he will not be suiting up again this season.

“It’s frustrating because I was willing to do anything; I end up taking the shot, taking four different kinds of pain pills, Vicodin, I sound like a drug addict just to play in the game, and it still doesn’t work,” he said. “We just have to go back and start rehabbing it again and get ready for next season.”

Not much of a surprise there; Arenas’ injury has prevented him from bringing anything to the table during the series, and has probably hurt his team by being out on the floor with a gimpy leg.

What is surprising is Arenas’s claim that his blogging career is about to come to an end. Say it ain’t so, Gilbert!

Someone please explain to me why you wouldn’t double LeBron as soon as he touched the ball?

Winslowalrob says:
TAD, check out the game film from game 4. All you gotta do is defend Lebron’s right because he cannot drive anywhere else, so you CAN single cover him and get away with it, but if you double him he dishes it to the open dude.

And he’s overrated anyway. Right Steve?

I pity the fool that gives Gilbert a boatload of money this summer, that knee is flucked up. It’s time to roll back the prices of Hibachi.

TADOne says:
Ok, so he only goes right? Big deal. He still gets to the rack at will if he is single covered.

Did Gilbert and LeBron make it to the Revolutionary War re-enactment OK after the game?

i was thinkin.. Gibert raised his stock through the roof after last year, and dropped it right back down this year.. i wonder how the offseason will play out for him, i notice he’s now taken the “I’d love to be with the Wizards, so much so that I’m willing to take a paycut” route after saying “i’m opting out to test the market - show me the money” more or less over the past year.. siiiigh

Emry DowningHall says:
Russ - LOL - I guess Lebron is militant come the postseason, and he told the Wiz Kids if they talk trash, “I’ll attack you with the North”

And someone please tell me why no help defender steps in front of him when he starts to barrel down the lane late in the game. It’s not like he uses Manu-like angles or anything.

The way Gil has been so hobbled recently really reminds me of the way Bernard King’s carrer was derailed by lingering knee problems. Both great scorers in their prime, but both could’nt stay healthy.

I’d take Jordan shooting the game winning J from 15 ft, than LeBron in the paint from 2. Just saying.

The Wizards play better without Gil it seems.

Yeah, really hard to call travelling on Butler since James would probably avg. about 17ppg if the refs called traveling as much as they could.
Here’s one where he takes 2 steps, hops, takes 2 more, and scores:

Gilbert could have been effective in the series (even with the gimply leg) if he hadn’t tried to force the issue every time he touched the ball.

Where was “Jordan” last night? Hmmmm… Cavs are in big trouble, because they had their chance to close them out, and they didnt, and we have seen it happen over and over, a team almost closes the other team out, but it gives em confidence that they can come back… Did anybody see the little talk Bron and Butler had last night? Caron told him that he wanted to take this series back to Washington, and Bron just smirked, cause he thought it was over. Now all the pressure is on them when they go in there for game 6…that home crowd is gonna be rockin, and I think they are going to extend this series to 7, Im not sure what will happen from there, but I hope they come back.

Gibby shouldn’t even have attempted to play. He’s probably made it worse. Just when we thought he was gonna be a supa-star.
