Riley and the Heat Not Necessarily Keeping Their Lottery Pick
As Dwyane Wade and two other team reps stood together awkwardly last night, awaiting their teams’ fates, Wade did a thumbs-up when Miami won the second pick in the Draft Lottery.
D-Wade, presumably, was happy with the idea of playing with either Derrick Rose or Michael Beasley, depending on who the Bulls select first.
Not so fast, says Pat Riley.
“Unless there’s somebody like LeBron James or a [Kevin] Garnett, somebody you absolutely know is a superstar, then the second-most important thing to have is leverage,” Riley said. “We feel we have a lot of leverage with the pick.”
“Take a look at what Boston did last year,” Riley said about the trade of its fifth overall pick for Garnett. “I’m talking hypotheticals. I just want people to know, especially our fans, that we’re going to do our best to select a player or leverage that pick to get the best player for the team.”
Ah, Pat Riley. The man who oversaw one of the worst seasons in franchise history, now given a chance to resurrect his franchise through pure chance, and still willing to make Heat fans sweat it out until the bitter end.
Gotta love him. Or not.

Good point. An ordinary, common sense statement.

But Celtics didn’t use their 5th overall pick to get KG… They used it to get Ray Allen and they had to throw in Delonte West and Wally. In retrospect, I’m pretty sure Boston wish they hold on to the pick.

yeah trade the pick. great idea. who’d want a franchise player and have a line up of wade, matrix, and beasley?

That would be a great trade for Denver too, since Beasley seems like a version of Melo who actually would want to do something other than score

Ron says:
Riley is saying the right thing. Who knows what some team is willing to offer for that pick. Unlike most of the world, I don’t think Rose or Beasley is a can’t miss pick. So if you get a chance to get a proven scorer like Melo with the pick and the Matrix, why not go for it?

Is there any way the Bulls could put together a trade to get the second pick too?

Melo for the pick and Trixie, make it happen. You could even throw in Najera or Kleiza. This is much better than sending him and Camby to New Jaysey.

I can almost guarantee that any combination of these 3 players will never play on the same team: Melo, Lebron and D. Wade.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind Melo on the team. But, his salary requirements plus Dwyane’s, wouldn’t leave us much room to sign anyone else to put around those guys. It’ll be interesting if it happens, but I don’t think it will. I see Riles looking for multiple solid role players–with point and center being the positions most needed–and one $8-$10 milllion player.

How about the #2, Marion and whoever (Blount etc) for Melo and Camby?
May.21 at 1:43 pm
Cheryl says:
You’re really ready to get rid of Marion, huh Eboy? I want to see what he can do before I’m ready to get rid of him. His price tag is high, but only this year. He could become great trade bait in February. I’m just saying, ‘not so fast’ to trading Marion.
May.21 at 1:43 pm
TADOne says:
Melo, Wade, and Camby would tap the Heat out as far as salary cap. The rest of the players would be all Chris Quinn’s. You really want that?

How could Mia give up their pick? After last seasons disaster, they need to rebuild around dwade and matrix and an early pick could be more beneifcial than a trade in heat future
May.21 at 1:54 pm
G Diesel says:
If they can get a superstar or a proven star, they should trade the pick without hesitation. Beasley is not gonna change their fortune in the near future. It’s gonna take him a few years to develop into a star; and that’s a big IF.
May.21 at 1:55 pm
G Diesel says:
Cheryl, Marion was good because of Steve Nash. He ain’t a star, he’s just a good role player. Ditto for Amare Stoudemire.

I would want Ai over melo even tho Ai and wade wouldnt work but melo jus isn’t worth it to me he doesnt have tha quality like a bron or a wade to be a #1 option and get a championship or even deep in the playoffs for tha matter
May.21 at 8:55 pm
RV says:
they have to explore all the options availble to them, and as great as rose or beasley would be to have, the goal isn’t to just have big names on the team, its about building a championship team. Marion is 30, Wade is 26, rose and beasley are both 19, That’s not a core, that’s just talent. By the time rose and beasley fulfill they’re potential Marion will be past his prime. Wasting time replacing Marion may waste Wade’s last years as a star. I think they should let Marion walk, push for a trade to bring a star in and look to sign some solid pieces around their two stars.

This could be a TURN AROUND OFF SEASON FOR MIAMI…Eboy, I’m getting ready to jump on the band wagon… Think about it. Which Coach/GM/protagonist has perhaps more understand of whos coming out in the draft this year? Surely it’s Pat who spent the rest of a blown out regular season to go looking…if he is confident that there is no…”Kevin Garnett or Lebron James” (his words) in this years draft then, that could be a pretty fair statement. ONE THING I’m sure will happen, this down period for Miami will last one season at best….this is no 2nd tier mover-and-shaker, I’m sure he got the last championship out of Shaq there was left and he’s moved him, he’ll revamp the team and the direction and BOOM..post season here eboy comes. I think he’ll shop the pick around…maybe to one of these western conf. teams that need to seperate themselves from the pack and settle in for a run at the playoffs with a deep roster.

GAY! Marion over Melo any day!
May.25 at 6:59 am
Ohpityme says:
What Riley needs to do is walk upto Marion and slap him in the face…just to make sure he leaves as a free agent..then with Davis & E-boy leaving as free agents that clears around 40 mil from the cap(I think).
Trading the pick which is likely to be Beasley for Melo is retarded when theyre similar players because Melos wage is around 13 mil whereas Beasleys will be around 4.5 for 4 years!
So the heat get Beasley, trade spare parts for a point guard(I’m guessing Lowry, Hinrich, or Mo Williams or Tinsley could be had for some pogs and bubblegum)then use what spare money you have to get Eddie Curry…and one of the athletic forwards availible(Either Iggy, Smith, Deng or soon to be J.Howard)!
Jobs a good un!
