Links: David West Scores…
On the court and in the studio…
OK, I’m back. Thanks to everyone who wished me well. I’ve been back in New York in body for a few days, but I only started to return in spirit tonight.
Really quickly, the Pistons moved on, without their point guard and without any real sense of urgency. Their win makes me 9-0 thus far in my Playoff predictions. I think I’m still ahead of ESPN’s assembled stat nerds. If I’m the meathead dude who can’t do math, I’m glad I’m restoring the natural order of things. And in New Orleans, the Hornets rolled again behind David West’s 38 points and 14 boards. I’ve been saying for two months that the Hornets are working on doing something special, and they haven’t let me down yet.
I meant to keep this short, but thought I’d give you a little something special before dropping a handful of links on you tomorrow.
So let’s talk about David West. Besides turning into a dominant ground-bound forward, in his spare time he’s been dabbling with music, turning out tracks. What follows is (I think) the world premiere of David West as a producer. The song is called “I Really Mean It.” I can’t tell you where I got this, and I don’t know who’s rapping over the track (Byron Scott?), but I can promise you that David West created and produced the entire thing. Enjoy…

light years behind the other mr west, but he picked a good song to sample. he looped it pretty nice. but damn, that rapper sounds like a monotone ja rule. is this a final cut lang, or still a work in progress?

B. Long says:
I know Timmy got 23 rebs. but David West dominated the man in every other phase of the game. I honestly thought that no one else on the Hornets could carry this team to victory besides CP3. Guess I was wrong. The beat is not bad either.

@davidR: Don’t know if it’s final or not…was told D-West feels it’s ready enough for people to listen to.

Haha @ Byron Scott… thats actually Peja rappin! The instrumental is ok, but 4 and a half minutes gets a lil repetitive. DOOM he is not.

RedRum says:
I am very surprised with the Hornets. I like the Spurs, but hornets are loaded… not much bench, but their starting 5 is awesome. oh, and CP3 is the best PG I have seen since Isiah, if not better. He is a cross between Isiah and Magic, simply awesome

Andy says:
A special word for Rip, who broke Isiah’s playoff scoring record last night and, barring injury, will set a new Pistons playoff appearance record in the Conference Finals. He represents the Pistons as well as anybody…a model of consistency.

It’s so f*cken cool when young cats step up in the playoffs. Mad props to David West! I hope he does it again in SA, but I, like many of you think we may be goin’ 7.

It’s a pretty solid effort for a rookie producer. Too repetitive though — it needs a B part and a hook.

Um, I’m talking about the song. It’s what the words “mediocre”, “boring” and “myspace-rap” were invented for.

Just succeeding with a classic sample without raping it makes this better than 95% of today’s “hiphop”. That’s not saying this is good. But yeah, needs some spice.

Slightly off subject here but on Radio 1 (here in the UK) they are talking about Lebron’s mum going all defensive for him, which has sparked a load of call ins about over defensive parenting/ really emabarrassing stuff, one guy said his mum threw a dart at a dude who beat him at darts and another guy was playing in a father son football match (soccer) at his school and his dad went for a slide tackle and his wedding veg came out of his shorts…….now thats embarrassing!!!!

That track is wack. If he drops the rapper, the beat and everything else besides the sample, then it’s not so bad… David West should just stick to basketball.

Remember when people (except Lang) were saying the Hornets were deeply flawed, and that West was only masquerading as an all-star because of CP3?

bit strange how the spurs had 15 less free throw attempts in a game refereed by joey crawford. i mean they were all over duncan and he only got to the line once.

I saw Joey Crawford & figured the Spurs would get at least one T. Props to TNT for mentioning it though. CP3 is nice but lets realize he was 6-18FG’s last nite, it was again the David West show. He’s legit and the up-and-under sequence followed by the swat on Timmay proves it.

If the Hornets beat the Spurs, I would like them to win it all. They play really nice ball, I would like them to win it. Enough with the traditional teams, how about Hornets against Cavs? it would be the new rivarly of the decade, the new Isiah vs Jordan. The NBA now is probably in its best. The playoffs have produced high quality basketball (well, apart from the Cavs Celts series), pasion, really good stuff. It has been very long since I enjoyed the playoffs that much
May.14 at 3:00 pm
Tariq says:
I will say this again: I only managed to see the first 2 games of the Cavs-Celts series. Game 2 was boring, but I really enjoyed the first game. I mean, when I watch futbol (soccer), I HATE it when teams play defense, because you can just have EVERYONE play defense and just clog one end of the field. No skill required. But in basketball, it’s always 5-0n-5 on both ends of the floor, so your defenders can’t outnumber the offensive players, and defense takes a lot more skill than in soccer. Which is why I enjoy defensive wars of attrition in the NBA. The way Boston play team defense is beautifully ugly in my book. But evidently I’m the only one who thinks so.
May.14 at 3:03 pm
Tariq says:
To me, watching a team that plays really good defense like the Celtics or Pistons is a lot more fun than watching a sloppy offensive juggernaut like Denver. But I have to say that the team I’ve enjoyed watching the most this postseason is New Orleans. And their defense is a part of that as well.
May.14 at 3:29 pm
Tariq says:
By the way, I want to ask a question about Ginobili: a friend of mine was saying that it made no sense for him to come off the bench, since he’s so good. I told him that Pop likes him to carry the second unit, and that he plays more than Finley anyway. It’s just that he likes to have Manu fresh if/when he rests Duncan and Parker. He responded by saying that no other team would keep an all-star and possibly top-10 player on the bench like that, and that if the idea is to just have a great scorer come off the bench, why not Parker, who isn’t a typical PG anyway? I’d just like someone to break it down clearly: Why does Manu come off the bench?
May.14 at 4:10 pm
TADOne says:
Tariq: Regarding Ginobili, from what I can gather, is that your argument is point on. Pop relegated Manu to the bench early in his career because he would make a ton of mistakes and the bench was a way to corral his play and get his attention. As time went on, Manu stopped making bone-headed mistakes and stopped missing assignments, but Pop chose to keep him on the bench becuase he seemed to excel off the bench, that his mentality was much better coming off the bench than when he started. As for now, Manu has the mentality to start, but Pop is comfortable starting someone else than bringing in Manu as the spark off the bench. Obviously, most coaches will tell you that you start your best 5, no questions. But you cannot really argue with Pop’s success over the last 7 seasons.

albie1kenobi says:
spurs start finley because he plays the role of spot up shooter well, but more so it’s because whether ginobili comes off the bench or start, he plays with the same bundle of energy and ability. most teams have a drop off of energy and production when they go to their bench, spurs already have two really really good player in their starting unit so it’s fine to have ginobili come off the bench, not to mention that most of the time the opposing team have no answer for ginobili, so he can do extra damage with the opposing starters out.
ginobili’s starting since game 3 this series though. let’s see what adjustments will pop make for this upcoming elimination game.

by the way, david west is the most unassuming all star we have in the league right now. like JoeGym said, that up and under basket around ducan and the swat on duncan (he was playing duncan straight up one on one!) proved this dude to be more than legit. i take my words back and my hat off to you, mr west.

The series is going the way I thought it would. I predicted on this website that if the Hornets won the first 2 games, they would win in 6. But if the Spurs stole one in New Orleans(which they didnt), the Spurs will take it in 7. But now i definitely think the Hornets are going to close the series out in 6.

Re: Manu off the bench TP and Manu are the shot creators on the Spurs, start them both & you’re down to Jacque Vaughn or Stoudemire to create shots for a bunch of old roleplayers who cant run. Scary isnt it? Plus have you seen the Spurs offense without Parker? They were 6-7 without him this year & looked horrible. 4 straight turnovers in game 4 when Pop sat him, that’s why. Barkley said it last nite: “The Spurs are 3 studs & a puff of smoke.” Their entire fast break/easy bucket offense is TP & Manu. That’s why Pop rests them so much during blowouts, b/c they’d never score without them.
