Lamar Odom: It’s on ME

By Sam Rubenstein

Hello there. Mutoni is on the road somewhere, so here I am. Memorial Weekend (yes, weekend not day) was memorable except I don’t remember much about it. I think I gained like 12 pounds just from hot dog buns. Okay enough of that, let’s talk NBA. So, the Lakers were blown out in game 3 when the Spurs refused to miss a shot, but according to Lamar Odom, well…

“I put this one on myself,” Lamar Odom announces. “I take the blame, totally, for this game.”

“I don’t sleep tonight,” Odom says. “I keep the TV off. I don’t read the newspaper. I get out to practice tomorrow and get my butt to the free-throw line.”
Odom is called for a three-second violation. Odom misses a jump shot.

Odom holds the ball at the end of a 24-second violation. Odom fails to scramble for a rebound that is turned into a fastbreak Spurs layup.

“It definitely snowballed,” Odom admits.

So there you go, case closed. Don’t be fooled by all of the Ginobili jumpers, or the Tim Duncan 20-20, or the Brent Barry show. The Lakers lost because Lamar Odom had a bad game, and he’s being accountable, blaming himself, promising to work harder. We’ll see tonight if Lamar Odom can turn it around and take down the defending champs.

it’s great that he’s trying to take responsibility for the loss but the lakers were just flat out destroyed and it wasn’t just his fault.

The Spurs are winning tonight. Make a note of it, put it in your blog.
These Lakers are NOT NBA champs.
By the way…Oberto>Turiaf

The Lakers have been outplayed in two of the three games thus far. If Kobe doesn’t save them in game one like he did this series would already be on the verge of Spurs victory. Pau has been exposed and completely outclassed by Duncan. Odom has played poorly and is not getting bailed out by refs whem he creates the contact. The team who gets the more contributions from their bench/role players will likely win each game.

Why does everyone keep insisting that the Lake Show isn’t ready to win a ring? They swept the Nuggets, put out an experienced Utah team, Kobe is the MVP, They won first place in the West, they are due.Except for the fact that Pau Gasol is suddenly about as strong as a care bear they really don’t have that many weaknesses. If they make the finals against Boston they win in 6.

May.27 at 10:36 am

ciolkstar says:
Timmy is a beast and the Lakers have no match for him. I’ve been loving how weak Pau’s been. Phil even called him out for those “weenie shots” in game 2, I think he was even worse last night. Unless Kobe spoon feeds him a bucket under the rim, Gasol’s only chance at scoring is that frightened little flip/hook shot or 15-18 foot jumpers.

Which Odom will show up for game 4?

May.27 at 10:41 am

ciolkstar says:
Compare Denver and Utah to Phoenix and New Orleans. Utah is overrated and doesn’t have a perimeter scorer/defender who can go back on forth with kobe. the nuggets are the most dysfunctional playoff team in the west. The Lakers haven’t been challenged yet but neither of their opponents was as tough as the Spurs 1st round series in Phoenix. This is starting to turn into a situation where Kobe’s gonna need to win the damn thing by himself, and thats exactly what popp and the Spurs want him to try to do.

May.27 at 10:45 am

Silky Slim says:
I have to ask the question about Odom before each game, because he’s so inconsistent. He’s an extremely skilled player, but he’s too inconsistent! He’s been in the league long enough, so he should have it figured out now!

slightly off topic -and maybe everyone knows about this- but i wanted to write something about tnt’s web cams. sunday’s game was blacked out where i live, so i went to check if there was something a their web site… and what i found was very cool. there are six cams, including one for each basket, so you can actually switch as the teams go up and down the floor, and watch the game in a more than passable way. but more cool were the manu- and kobe-cams: web cams that just stay with the star players at all times. i think i learned more about kobe in five minutes than in all in the years i’ve watched him, ’cause you’re not distracted by the movement of thue ball and the other players (for example, he bosses around his teammates after virtually very whistle; and runs incredible interference in the passing lanes on defense). and overall, it feels WAY more like being at the game, because you get more fan noise, more player talk, even the cheesy music that’s played while everyone’s standing around waiting for the commercial break to end. there are also these surreal moments that you’d never get on tv. for instance, because it’s a manu cam, it stays on manu the whole game, even when he’s on the bench. so if you feel like it, you can watch him biting his nails while he and kurt thomas follow the play with their eyes. anyway, if you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely worth a look when the next game’s going on

@ciolkstar: i couldnt agree with you more. with the way the west played out this year. the spurs got it worst then any other team in the west. having to go against the suns in the first round then dealing with the relentless hornets in round 2. the lakers could have very easily been knocked out in the first round by the suns

but not really

Sparker: it’s real cool. What i want now: a duncan cam to watch how he is constantly finding the optimal position on the floor with insane efficiency, and a turiaf cam to work on my dance moves.

Whatever… its a rally point. Good move by LO, but they’ll need more than that to get their team past the Spurs. Kobe can carry his team against 95% of the teams out there… the Spurs aren’t one of them… he needs, no, NEEDS Pau, Fish and LO to grab their balls and play. But being a Spurs fan… I’m happy with watching Kobe work, appreciating his great talent and having the Spurs win… even if its only happened ONCE this series.

May.27 at 11:38 am

Jake says:
It’s true the Lakers may not have been tested in the playoffs yet with this group but they still have Kobe,Fisher,Walton who have all had great success at one point or another in the playoffs. If they had won game 3 in San Antonio everyone would be calling the Spurs old and washed up, I think that game 4 will be far more informative as to what kind of teams these two really are.

Lamar was high as hell in Game 1…he had to be. He played worse in Game 1 than he did on Sunday. Then, he killed on Friday and he probably celebrated by smoking until Sunday afetrnoon.

May.27 at 12:05 pm

E. Sneed says:
Good that Lamar is being truthful, but that’s not all that needs to happen: The have to play better team defense and REBOUND, Kobe has to get his early and late…Fisher and Lamar have to get to the line and knock down “give me’s”, and Sasha and/or Farmar have to get about 12-15 off the bench…if that happens, 3-1 Lake Show

Brandon Hoffman says:
Assuming Andrew Bynum is healthy next season –and Phil decides to start Pau at the power forward position — the Lakers are going to have a logjam at the shooting forward spot with Odom, Walton, V-Rad, and Ariza. I hope they retain Odom because he’s such a vital piece to the triangle offense.

May.27 at 1:25 pm

starbury&stevey says:
trade him to the knicks for davis lee and a draft pick(not first round)…new york knicks is the perfect team for overrated players without confidence,s**t character and off-court problems…celebrity rehab is a good idea too..

I love how whoever won the previous night’s game is declared the winner of the series. As Duncan said after the Game One loss, “it’s just one game, folks”. The Spurs are supposed to win on their home floor. And the pressure is still on them, cuz if they lose tonight, they gotta win twice in LA.

May.27 at 1:47 pm

ciolkstar says:
I really like the Spurs tonight. Many of the Lakers have become so dependant on Kobe creating good looks for them. That they’re offense turns stagnant whenever he misses a couple jumpers. Pau has been exposed in this series. He cannot score against Timmy in the post(unless Kobe drives and spoon feeds him the layup) and he definitely can’t guard TD in the post on the other end. Tim had the least credited 20-20 game I’ve seen in awhile. Dude absolutely dominates the paint on both ends and shoots a high enough percentage against single coverage to make the laker double team neccessary. Manu killed it last time, so i’d look for an adjustment from Phil. but Tony is due for a big game and Timbot will do his thug thizzle along the role/bench players for SA. This one’s goin’ back 2-2 baby.

its not that we dont think the lakers can beat the spurs. cause we know they can. its just we believe in the real big three. we know how to handle their ups and downs.

B. Long says:
@Brandon Hoffman: Did you invent a new position? “Shooting Forward”?
@ciolkstar: Saying Utah doesn’t have a scorer/defender to go back and forth with Kobe is stupidity at its highest level. NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE IN THE LEAGUE. Dude is on his own level right now. Don’t even try to say Manu GiFLOPbli. Please save yourself the humilation. Manu had a great game but for the Spurs to be able to stretch this series past 5 games he has to play that way every single night. He’s not hitting those 3s in L.A. Bet on it.

May.27 at 2:51 pm

B. Long says:
Lamar will bring it tonight and Phil Jackson will flick Pau in the fleshy patch where his nuts used to be and he’ll start ballin too. Kobe drops his 30, which 10 will come in the 4th and the Lakeshow will go home up 3-1. Someone polish up that WCF trophy quick.

May.27 at 3:07 pm

marcgar says:
@B.Long: sorry to say spurs will still have that fire in them. pau’s fleshy patch will still be there and lamar may do better than last game but it wont be enough. series gos back to l.a. tied 2-2

May.27 at 5:44 pm

speedy says:
I like how all the spurs fans talk about how the lakers were destroyed and that the lakers don’t have a chance . Don’t forget that SA lost the previous game with a bigger margin . This was a must win game for them to stay in the series but LA will adjust and the next games, in my opinion, will all be closer and more thrilling .
Nobody knows right now who will win this series we are all just hoping and rooting for our team.
Most of you getting on Lamar forget that Derek also played poorly and the laker bench didn’t exist last game except of Jordan F.
But if they step up SA will have trouble getting their second home win.
