How Dare They Play Basketball on Sunday?!

Larry Miller, the outspoken owner of the Utah Jazz, will not be in the building for Game 4 of the Lakers/Jazz series because it’s being played on Sunday (which doesn’t jive with his spiritual beliefs.)

(Hopefully, his team won’t show up either.)

Bryant Reeves says:
“his wife might watch the game and give him updates while he takes a long drive” - umm, how is taking a long drive a religious activity? And does this remind anyone else of the Big Lebowski, or am I alone on that one (”I don’t roll on the Sabbath!”)

Miller should make an exception here. His next chance to watch the Jazz play won’t be until late October.

Is playing on Sundays a new phenomenon or something?

Guess Danny Ainge and Shawn Bradley won’t watch the game either.

capostat says:
i’m kinda surprised that this is reported on NBA.com. it’s weird. a religious observance, for one. two, it’s a personal decision from 1 person who isnt a player. three, its like a story in which the “object” (the league or game) is telling on itself in a way. i dunno…

the 7 wife comment is pure ignorance — and Danny Ainge will probably watch the game - to each his own. To obey the Sabbath is one of the 10 commandments and to each his own on your interpretation of remembering the sabbath day and to keep it holy — God chose to rest on that day. Leave the man be.

Spaceship Jay says:
I co-sign Lang. Let the man be. Those are his principals, and I agree with keeping the Sabbath day holy. But if I owned a NBA basketball team….. Watching them wouldn’t be “work”

and this is not new for the NBA to play on sunday. I can’t remember them ever not playing on Sunday.

Spaceship Jay says:
Yeah… Wait a minute… How many times have the Jazz played on a Sunday BEFORE this?

I won’t be watching because it is the most important holiday of all on Sunday… Mother’s Day.

Better start that campaign for the owner of Chick fil A to become NBA commissioner, Larry Miller.

Is it just a creative way to let the media know that he already knows the outcome of the series.

Lane - the Sabbath is a Saturday not the Sunday. The Sunday is the Lord’s Day - the day Jesus Christ was raised which was not on the Sabbath.

tealish says:
Wow, what ignorance on this board. Yes, let’s all bash the man’s religious stand and bring mormonism into this because it’s UTAH (LOLOOLOL) and we love our basketball.
Or we could just watch the game ourselves and not make an issue out of this.

ah — a 7th day adventist? Yes it was on Saturday in the old Testament - Christ rose on a Sunday .. and thus Sunday became the sabbath

Mayor of Lovetron says:
To be fair, it explicitly says in the Book of Mormon that taking a long drive is what God would have you do instead of going to a basketball game. Though, the only music that you’re allowed to put on is the Osmonds and the Tabernacle Choir.

Cant fault a man for following his religion. Although I bet his religion says something about holding grudges aganist people, like the one he has with Don Fegan.

Larry Miller is pure ignorance.

May.10 at 4:35 pm

Kevin Wilson says:
Larry Miller owns the Jazz. He spends money to make sure the Jazz are competitive and have a strong product for their fans every single year. He can attend or skip games as he damn well pleases, religious reasons or otherwise.

May.10 at 7:29 pm

Shaun says:
Lane: Nothing about being a 7th day. I’m a Christian. Read Acts - the Christians met on the first day of the week - thus Sunday never became the Sabbath. Saturday has been and continues to be the Sabbath. Christians chose to use the OT rule for resting on the Sabbath and replaced it with the Lord’s Day - but it never replaced the day itself.
In any case, Buddy’s quote is right.

Brandon says:
What a biased title. The guy didnt say games shouldnt be played on Sunday he simply said he will not watch one on Sunday.

May.11 at 10:52 am

Dacre says:
If I may…the “sabbath day” was considered a day fo rest from work to pursue religious activity…sure that bit we know…what I don’t really fathom is that, by having his wife give him updates anyway….isn’t that defeating the purpose of him trying to set this day of the week aside? He’s trying to worship properly by the Jewish law-code but on the other hand his looking for a share of the goods…It’s a shame he didn’t look into the part of the Christian-Greek scriptures where the old Jewish law code was replaced (thus doing away with 1 set ‘holy’ day…but oh well… he’s the one with an NBA team after all.
^_^
go jazz.
p.s.
hasn’t he being doing this for the past decade anway?

May.12 at 11:20 am

lane says:
sunday did became the sabbath when the last supper took place on a Sunday — read again.
