Has Mike D’Antoni Picked a New Team?

by Marcel Mutoni

According to the Chicago papers, Mike D’Antoni would like to take over the coaching reigns in Chicago. Whether he’s granted his wish is another matter altogether.

Mike D’Antoni has told John Paxson he wants to be the Bulls’ next coach, according to sources.

Whether Paxson has the same wish remains to be seen after the Bulls’ general manager spent parts of Sunday and Monday with the Suns’ coach in Phoenix.

Though D’Antoni has enjoyed great success in Phoenix, there’s no telling how his high-octane system would work with a team like the Bulls. My guess is not very well.

Chicago - who also interviewed Nuggets assistant Mike Dunlap - must decide if Mike’s hefty price tag (he’s probably going to be looking at a raise from his annual salary of a little over $4 mil) is worth the trouble.

Russ?

If it happens then Hinrich = new Nash. Well probably not, but I’m sure someone in the press (like the great expert Rosen) would pull that comparison up.

If Hinrich is the new Nash, then Ryan Bowen is the next Larry Bird.

If it happens, expect the Bulls to draft a point this year, maybe Collison, or trade for a point, maybe Lowrey. Hinirch will not run the point on a D’antoni coached team. Not without 15 turn overs a game.

I’m not sure how the Bulls expect this to work, because they have even less of an interior presence and less rebounding than the Suns.

Tommy Patron says:
Bring on D’Antonio. Who cares if we don’t play so much defense anymore. If we can score a lot, we’ll be a VERY high seed in the East. Honestly, I’d be excited about anything that doesn’t involve sucking big-time.

I thought he was going to go to Italy and coach Stephon Marbury?

Russ’s head just exploded. That’s the only logical explanation why he hasn’t commented yet.

Russ Bengtson says:
I think D’Antoni would be a refreshing change of pace for the Bulls. They may need to make some personnel changes to accompany the coaching change, but given their record last season, I wouldn’t be averse to that either. Also, see Tommy Patron’s last sentence.

Tommy Patron says:
Lang, Drew Gooden understands individual and team defense, so no, Drew Gooden does not equal Amare.

Under D’Antoni’s system of running gunning and jumping all in under 7 seconds with no care for defense Ty Thomas = Amare

May.6 at 3:27 pm

Fredo says:
Let’s see. If you want to be generous and draw comparisons between the two: Ty Thomas = Shawn Marion
Luol Deng = Boris Diaw
Ben Gordon = Joe Johnson Unfortunately, Hinrich is not Nash and Nocioni and Drew Gooden aren’t Amare.

May.6 at 5:38 pm

Tommy Patron says:
Fredo, Tyrus may eventually be similar to Marion, Deng is definitely NOT Diaw (Deng has a jumpshot), I WISH Ben Gordon was Joe Johnson, agreed that Hinrich is not Nash (but at least can play D), and THANKFULLY Noc and Gooden aren’t Amare.

Kind of unrelated, but the Bulls have just taken Chuck Swirsky out of Toronto. Pax, my check is in the mail.

why do they even have to compare to the suns, its not the same team, you’re not gonna find a nash or an amare, etc…he needs quick guys, guys who can shoot, athletic big men, and they got that. They may not rule the regular season like the suns did, but i dont see them sucking, especially in the east.

here’s what dantoni’s team looked like when he ran an NBA team without steve nash.

albie1kenobi says:
who is the shooter on bulls? thabo? don’t you need some shooters for d’antoni’s system? or at least a legit point guard who can push the pace? if the bulls do take this high profile coach, they are going to need some roster change to say the least.
by the way, go read john marzan’s linked article. good read.
