Grizz Owner Bitter Post Draft Lottery

by Marcel Mutoni

In many ways, the Draft Lottery is a wonderful torture technique. I’m actually kind of surprised that Bush and co. have yet to adopt it.

Not only are the worst NBA teams trotted out in front of the world and reminded yet again of their ineptitude, with subtle insults like, “Elgin Baylor is a veteran of the lottery process”; since there can only be one winner among this group of losers, the majority of them leave the event with the crushing realization that pure luck will not save them; they must indeed figure out a way to dig themselves out their miserable situation.

Case in point: The Memphis Grizzlies, recipients of the fifth pick last night.

“It’s a typical situation,” Griz owner Michael Heisley said when reached by telephone. “We’ve been in the lottery so much and have never gotten the No. 1 pick. It doesn’t make any sense. Last year, I said it was a screwed-up system. This year, I think it’s a screwed-up system.

But I still think we’ll get a good player. This is a deep draft.”

“Listen here, bub. We didn’t give away our franchise player for nothing, and end up losing this many games just to settle for the damn fifth pick!”, Heisley did not necessarily add.

The Grizzlies are one dumb franchise.

It’s karma for being so stupid and getting robbed in broad daylight by the Lakers. But hey they have Kwame, a former first draft choice.

May.21 at 9:19 am

Silky Slim says:
That statement is coming from a guy who traded Pau Gasol for a happy meal and $50.

James the balla says:
Who will they pick with the fifth pick?

May.21 at 9:20 am

Silky Slim says:
This years draft is deep……deep in that it’s full of mediocre players.

Dancing Bears is still a better name

BETCATS says:
!

May.21 at 9:33 am

BETCATS says:
Well Memphis always has the Tigers and 3 6 Maffia. So i think that if they change their names to the Dancing Bears they will get #1 out of pitty from the sternbot, but until that horrible day DEAL WITH IT

Enjoy OJ Mayo.

iLL wiLL says:
Stupid asses. Lakers laughing all the way to the Finals. Memphis Grizz will stay losing.

May.21 at 9:53 am

BETCATS says:
i think if they draft OJ they would’ve lost their minds. They need big men to complement Kwame Brown (if he is back), Jason Collins (if he is back), Darko (gaag), and Hakim Warrick (only decent one out of the group). Oh wait, Brian Cardinal!

May.21 at 9:53 am

Silky Slim says:
D. Rose amd B. Easy are certified studs. O.J. Mayo’s is a wildcard. He can create his own shot and he’s a solid defender when he wants to be, but does Mayo have the passion to be a great player? He has the skill set, but does he have the drive to be an elite player in the league. Will he develop a DWade-type game or will he develop a Larry Hughes-type game?

May.21 at 10:11 am

Nick says:
Why draft OJ Mayo? just wait until his rookie contract expires and buy him a cell phone and a nice pair of pants and boom! you’ve got him.

May.21 at 10:15 am

Fredo says:
A lot of what they do might be determined by what they get for Mike Miller. That said with Conley, Crittendon and Lowry on board, there’s no need for a PG. They’ve Gay and Warrick. So their best option might be as BETCATS said a big man. How does Brook Lopez or Kevin Love sound? Wait…Gay AND Love on the same team. I’d hate to see the headlines some idiots might come up with that combo.

Didn’t they have the first pick when they went for bryant reeves? Can’t remember but if that was the case they sure have problem for scouting talent.

why is everyone forgetting eric gordon??!?

May.21 at 10:55 am

I would find the combo of Gay and Love amusing… But no club would ever sign up for that PR nightmare… Unless they’re moving to SanFran? I digress…..

People's Princess says:
Man,Memphis needs to deal that pick to Bet in a S and T for Okafor. That would be sweet.Ain’t no1 at 5 who’s gonna help you for atleast a couple of years. And then they gonna leave Memphis when their rook contract is up,anyway.

May.21 at 11:41 am

Bryant Reeves says:
Benoit - I was pick #6, 1995. Ahead of Damon Stoudamire and just after KG.

May.21 at 11:56 am

AC - i fail to see how it’s a “PR Nightmare”? Immature people would get a laugh from it for a few minutes, and most normal people would carry on their daily lives and thing nothing of it. Unless America’s full of homophobes??

oh snap!

May.21 at 12:35 pm

Silky Slim says:
@riggs: Eric Gordon is another wildcard to me. He possesses point guard skills, but he’s more of a combo guard than a point guard. He’s got the height, size, and game to play in the league. E. Gordon’s success will largely depend on which team draft’s him. In the right system, he can be another Deron Williams. In the wrong system, he will be Starbury.

May.21 at 12:52 pm

Jackie Moon says:
They already have a former No.1 draft pick, and a No.2, why do they need more?

May.21 at 12:54 pm

what says:
Have fun being Pau Gasol’s successor, Brook Lopez.

May.21 at 12:54 pm

TADOne says:
Eric Gordon reminds me of Ben Gordon. I’m not sure if that is a good or bad thing?

May.21 at 2:01 pm

thasam says:
I’m surprised that I haven’t heard much about what hand Jerry West had in that Gasol trade; isn’t he still involved with the Grizzlies in some capacity? C’mon, you don’t think West engineered that deal so the Grizz can get sold and his Lakers can become title contenders?

May.21 at 2:14 pm

Garrett says:
Man, the Grizzlies just need to pack up and call it quits. Nobody likes them anyways.

May.21 at 2:46 pm

Diogo says:
The Grizzlies suck since like, forever. They definitely suck for at least 15 years, which is as far as I can remember. Just give up on basketball man…

The System is screwed up? IT’S A F*CKIN LOTTERY, ASSHOLE!!!!!!!!!!!! Stop tanking every Damn season and maybe you’ll appreciate the season more.

May.21 at 5:14 pm

P.Slight says:
Maybe they can draft Project Pat, he’s no franchise player but neither is Gay Rudy, Kwame, Mike Conley, etc…..

May.21 at 5:57 pm

dma says:
Mike Dunleavy did not look pleased with the comment “The Los Angeles Clippers have been to the lottery the most”.

May.21 at 6:06 pm

AC says:
Sab… okay… PR nightmare was a bit extreme and I doubt it would be a punch line for more than a couple of weeks. But trying to build a publicity campaign around those two players would pose a myriad of difficulties.

The Pau Gasol incident strips you the right, as a GM, to be bitter about anything — ever.

May.21 at 6:54 pm

Diogo says:
Kwame trade: “Hey I got this old bike. When I bought it, they said it would be great, but now I realized it sucked. You wanna traaaade?”. “Sure, you want my Porsche?”

May.21 at 8:49 pm

Dacre says:
THE IRONY IS THAT IF THE GRIZZLIES HAD THE FIRST PICK THAT YEAR THEY WOULD NOT HAVE DRAFTED KWAME…..here we go again.

May.25 at 7:05 am

Ohpityme says:
The Grizz should do there best(I.E. just not be morons)to keep M.Miller!
And like someone here said S&T the pick for Okeafor give him the money he wants because its the only way anyone will come to Memphis now!
Then hopefully theyd have a starting line up of
Okeafor
Warrick
Miller
Gay
Conley!
Not too bad!

May.25 at 7:08 am

Ohpityme says:
But that wont happen theyll give Miller away, draft Mayo(nothing wrong with him but they dont need him) and give Ben Gordon a max contract!
