Did Mitchell’s Tee Time Interfere With Raptors’ Sleep?

by Marcel Mutoni

Strange, hilarious stuff out of Toronto: Rumor has it that the day before they were eliminated by Orlando, Sam Mitchell made the team fly out of Canada at 8 in the morning so that he could hit the links in sunny Florida. The Globe and Mail has the details:

We’re going to go out on a limb here: There’s a very real chance that Mitchell played golf on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Orlando, and there’s distinct possibility that Darrick Martin was with him. And might Colangelo have been less than thrilled at the optics, if not the fact of said golf game? Again, just speculating, but yes.

And were some players less than thrilled at having to get up early on Sunday morning – remember, NBA players work nights – for an 8 a.m. flight instead of practicing at the Air Canada Centre and flying out that afternoon, as had been originally scheduled? That’s a safe bet. Like the rest of the general population, NBA players prefer to sleep in.

Mitchell, of course, denies taking the earlier flight so as not to miss his tee time. And if there’s any truth to this, what’s with Toronto basketball personalities having other arrangements before huge Playoff games?

Whatever the case, Mitchell and the rest of the organization now have plenty of time for golf and other leisurely activities.

As a Raptors fan, I’ve had enough to deal with, with Wince Carter, and whatnot. I have a feeling this isn’t true, and I really hope it’s not. I have respect for Sam, the reigning Coach of the Year, but he better not keep treating the media like sh*t if he pulled a stunt like this. - Slim Biggins

I don’t think this story has any merit at all. He would have flunked basic psychological evaluations during job inverviews. Even in the NBA nobody that dumb gets a coaching gig…

“Again, just speculating, but yes.”

I hope that the raps make a serious run at d’antoni. He and BC are old buds, it could happen. Oh please God let that happen!

Wow. First he gameplans for Andrew Bynum when the kid had been injured for weeks and now he’s scheduling tee times during the playoffs. Either Mitchell has his priorities out of wack or someone in Toronto is setting the stage for his exit.

Tom says:
The only thing stopping colangelo from grabbing D’antoni would be the money issue. To buy out the remaining $9mill on Mitchells contract, and then hire a top-notch coach like D’antoni, who is going for no less than $5million per I don’t think the owners would let him do that

Don’t mess with a man and his tee time.

Orlando was the better team people…stop whining.

Why not let Sam coach. He has the same style as D’antoni and his players respond to him. Bring in some assistants can help in big man work, guard play etc…

How bout draft a real center instead 3pt shooting 7 footer

The Raptors’ problem is that they don’t defend. How is bringing D’antoni, who doesn’t know the meaning of the word ‘defence’, going to help? Somebody, please explain.

Sam Mitchell is gangsta. I hope Mookie Blaylock was in his foursome.

Oh Paps, please. Not the graduation thing again. VC’s hated on for some many things, most of which bare some legitimacy, but give it a rest on his grad day.

Q. What the difference between a Greyhound Bus and Sam Mitchell? A. The Greyhound is a Coach and Sam Mitchell is the biggest joke since Sam Bowie.

Hursty says:
the answer to the headline Q is obviously yes if this is the case. Can it be said that he did the same thing for every other game they lost? no? then this is a no story.

Of all the stuff (not to mention legit, coaching situations) happenning around the NBA right somehow someone still finds way to try and sh*t on the Raps…doesn’t suprise me at all anymore. Mitchell will be back next season and Colangelo will make moves in the off-season. The Raps will have a solid season. I have to agree with a comment above, the Raps main problem is lack of defence (so the solution would be bring in a coach that is so high on offense? hmmm..I hope D’Antoni stays in Phoenix and they make some serious noise next season.

May.4 at 12:59 pm

chineseharry says:
The only thing Sam Mitchell knows about defence is da white picket one on his front lawn. He doesn’t even know how to guard himself against a mosquito. He thinks man-on-man is an adult film position, and a full court press is what his dry cleaners does to his suits.

I wish Coaches could be traded… oh wait they’d get crap all for him in return as well.
