D-Wade Considers Taking the Vince Carter Route

by Marcel Mutoni

Dwyane Wade became famous for a couple of reasons: His relentless drives to the tin (which often resulted in breathtakingly unbelievable finishes), and the hard falls to the ground as a result of said drives.

As he goes through yet another long rehab on his left knee, Wade is considering altering his game somewhat and becoming more of a jumpshooter.

‘’It comes into play. It comes into your mind,'’ said Wade, who averaged 24.6 points and 6.9 assists per game this season and made a career-high 22 three-pointers. “The easiest thing is to become a jump shooter. You have to mix it up. It’s just about getting smarter with the game as you grow.

“I’m going into my sixth year, and I’m smarter than I was in my first.'’

While no one wants to see the insanely athletic Wade lazily toss up 20 footers all night, he absolutely must make changes to his offensive game if he wants to have a long and healthy career.

A reliable jumpshot is something every great slasher has had to sprinkle in to their offensive repertoire as they got older (and wiser); some guys just took it too far. Let’s hope Wade doesn’t fall into the latter category.

at least he isnt gonna JR Smith it

Eboy says:
Great comparison, Marcel. Glad to see you still have no clarity when it comes to being witty.

May.6 at 9:07 am

Ken says:
Jordan had a similar transition, and it worked out a lot better for him than it did for VC. I don’t think this is a bad thing really.

räuber hotzenplotz says:
it’s a surprise he lasted that long

this is just a wag the dog from DWade…..to divert us from his umm…’other’ news

Russ Bengtson says:
Six years, damn. Doesn’t seem that long.

Whitemamba says:
He doesn’t want a heart either?

May.6 at 9:21 am

Fredo says:
For a moment there I thought you meant he was going to quit on his team and ask to be traded for 10 cents. I can’t believe Chuck’s favorite phonecaller would Miami like that.

May.6 at 9:39 am

MSkittle says:
Oh no! The worst thing a player can do is catch “Vincitis.”

May.6 at 9:49 am

Tariq says:
If Dwyane turns to Vince, I’m blaming Star Jones and her ample ankles.

May.6 at 10:01 am

whooo! says:
but wade’s already got a solid mid-range. he has no 3pt shot, which he should get, but he’s already got the jumper down and just needs to keep mixing it up. doesn’t seem like breaking news here…

May.6 at 10:06 am

Eboy says:
First accurate comment of the day. Thanks whooo!

May.6 at 10:17 am

WhaHuh says:
What about Tony Parker? He’s still got it, maybe Wade should concentrate on his landings

May.6 at 10:24 am

Hoffman says:
“Dwyane Wade became famous for a couple of reasons: His relentless drives to the tin (which often resulted in breathtakingly unbelievable finishes), and the hard falls to the ground as a result of said drives.” Don’t forget the 20 + free throws per game he was afforded in the 2006 NBA Finals when the NBA gift wrapped the championship trophy for him and Shaq…

May.6 at 10:29 am

Ben Osborne says:
I’d find it more understandable for Dwyane to tone things down given the beating he’s taken. What was Vince’s excuse?

May.6 at 10:31 am

Russ Bengtson says:
The 2000 Dunk Contest took a lot out of him.

May.6 at 10:39 am

King David says:
wow. i thought u were about to say he wanted to get traded.PHEW!!!!

May.6 at 10:51 am

Blue says:
Vince hasn’t been the same since Frederic Weis delivered a flagrant headbutt to his nuts in the Olympics…

May.6 at 11:20 am

Zee! says:
It’s all about adjustments. And hopefully with the adding of Derek Rose, Wade can adjust to not always having to make things happen by himself. Then you’ll probably see less forays to the basket and more controlled play where he can just be put in a position to score by the PG. But thats IF they get a great PG in the offseason.

Shooter#9 - Brasil says:
i just LOOOOVED the link on “some” guy to nba.com/vince_carter… hauhauahuhauauhauuahuhauha great!

May.6 at 11:32 am

Mike says:
@Hoffman: You’re exactly right. I’ve always believed that the leauge gave the Heat those Finals just to get back at Cuban for all the “drama” he’s caused

May.6 at 11:44 am

RV says:
haven’t most of these guys hurt themselves out on the perimeter?? I dont see why he should stop driving, just pull up 5 feet within the basket instead of going all the way, there’s no reason to settle for 15 footers.

May.6 at 11:48 am

Captain America says:
D will not settle for the J. He is just doing some internal bargaining. But when the game is on the line, D will make u pay.

May.6 at 12:02 pm

Nick says:
Why not just shoot a teardrop/floater on a couple of drives each game. Based on his normal tendencies and proclivity towards taking it all the way in, the floater should be there all day. (see: Parker, Tony) It might save him a little damage.

May.6 at 12:27 pm

rav says:
maybe he could start by increasing his 25.8% career 3pt percentage (which has declined near enough every year)

May.6 at 12:52 pm

Andre green says:
EXCUSE me Wade only get his jumper off because they guard the drive if he’s not driving he has no flow or momentum there for he’ll be averaging 12.9 points per game til he gets to the line where he’s no Reggie Miller either. Go back to plan A ball til you fall then get up 8 more times.

May.6 at 12:52 pm

Victor says:
wade’s not that bad a jumpshooter. when he had 48 vs orlando, he took and made a lot of shots

May.6 at 1:14 pm

Michael says:
I hope it works out better for him than vince. He better start shooting like a 1000 jumpers every day now, because his shot outside of 15 ft is really suspect.

May.6 at 1:35 pm

Wince Carter says:
The comparison is void because Vince was never a slasher.

May.6 at 1:45 pm

Miguel Ferreira says:
As long as the D WADE star reborns next season i’m fine with this decision.

May.6 at 2:11 pm

B_Easy24 says:
To andre_green: haahhaah I agree with you on that one. Unless he develops a consistent jumper his entire game will be suspect.

May.6 at 2:20 pm

d.Y. says:
Fall down 8 times, start shooting J’s.

May.6 at 2:20 pm

Justin says:
My question is how is Allen Iverson still in this league when he’s been attacking the rim his whole career. He rarely misses games and is always the NBA minutes leader. I don’t think Wade’s game is causing these injuries more so than a freak accident. Remember, the injury that led to these recent problems is Shane Battier hurting Wade’s shoulder on a loose ball play.

May.6 at 2:48 pm

Victor says:
a better
3pt shot would take his game to a whole nother level

May.6 at 3:07 pm

dma says:
he needs to make sure he can perform outside of basketball…

May.6 at 3:22 pm

youngmuggsy says:
tony parker would be disgusted if he read this article.

May.6 at 3:27 pm

MSkittle says:
Please no “Vincitis” or “Finleyitis” for D Wade!

May.6 at 3:35 pm

Deeves says:
If the Vincitis can get you 21/6/5 while playing with a bum ankle, I would like to have it! People are hating just too much…

May.6 at 5:15 pm

tealish says:
Word, Deeves. But sometimes I’d like to wonder what it’d be like if Vince never announced that he wasn’t going to dunk anymore and never said he quit on the Raps. He’s still the game’s best dunker, still puts up great stats. Just had a momentary lapse in judgment where he abandonned the superstar handbook and displayed some painful honesty.
Wince: Not a slasher? Watch some vintage VC vids and come back to me. Unless flying through the lane doesn’t constitute as slashing. Whatever, it’s the same process and result sans the dribbling.

May.6 at 5:24 pm

Bubba Chuck says:
F*ck u BET!

May.6 at 6:01 pm

ahbat says:
TEALISH: who the hell announces that he’s not going to dunk anymore? or let a squad know that he quit on the team? what kind of thought process is that? what you call departing from the “superstar handbook” i call a serious case of bitchassness

May.6 at 6:13 pm

j melo says:
since d wade shot bout 28% from 3 this year i’d say he got a lot of work to do.

May.6 at 6:17 pm

Justin says:
Kobe and Jordan did the same thing. If he works hard he should be able to combine both parts of his game.

May.6 at 7:45 pm

Gerard Himself says:
Now I understand no one wants to see a guy like Wade become a jumpshooter, but some of you guys are overreacting. The guy is falling apart, he should mix it up. In fact, he should’ve done that way earlier, because if he did, he might’ve been able to play 70 games or so.

May.6 at 8:28 pm

BETCATS says:
Really Bubba? Cause if Wade shoot a 45 foot three pointer when they are down by 4 points i would vomit, sh!t my pants, j@gg off using shampoo, and every other posible disgusting thing their is too do in honor of what Wade had done

May.6 at 8:50 pm

florida_evans says:
Hold on now,j@gging off with shampoo is disgusting?I have GOT to stop.

May.6 at 9:16 pm

the biggest shaq fan eva says:
i hope this isnt true

May.6 at 9:27 pm

Kenny says:
vince still puts up good stats just wait till next season

May.6 at 11:47 pm

Alpha-bet says:
D Wade launching jumpers now? No wonder he’s dating Star Jones..he’s sounding like a old man anyhow..

May.6 at 11:59 pm

damascus says:
man wade aint kobe….. i dont think he will be able to do what kobe does… kobe mixs it up…. drive,post,mid-range,longrange….. kobe does it all… wade doesnt have the skills like kobe…… i hope wade doesnt fall off like penny hardway,vince,t-mac(still pretty good),sprewell, marbury,…. but i dont seem him capapable of doing this…. his shot is not has great as kobe… kobe jumpshot is water… wade can shoot dem… but we will see

May.7 at 5:36 am

Jimmy G says:
How about Wade, stop going to the whole like he’s doing 100 mph in a school zone. He picks his spots, gets better outside, he’d be more dangerous.

May.7 at 6:18 am

Son of Shawn says:
And there´s another example of why Allen Iverson is the toughest and bravest guard of the game, he´s about 35 lbs. less than Wade and seven years older or so and he´s still attacking the rim, taking contacts and groundin´ hard, so, what this says about D-Wade an Vince in comparison?

May.7 at 11:43 am

B. Long says:
I knew this would happen when Pat Riley signed Penny Hardaway last season. That ish he got is contagious.

May.7 at 10:03 pm

Nique says:
Man why everybody hatin on Vince. So quick to say he’s not Vince anymore just because he’s loosing his bounce. If yall recognize game you’ll see that Vince put up numbers this year…and it was on a bad ankle all year. Only him, Kobe and Lebron averaged 20pts 5 boards and 5 dimes. I don’t care what anyone says…..I’ma always ride with Vince.

May.8 at 2:44 pm

Victor says:
iverson does, attack the rim, but not like wade. He’s does it more aggresively and consistenly. not to mention his extra weight and height.

May.8 at 6:16 pm

Tee-Jay says:
I’m glad Wade is finally considering chaning his game. The rim-rocking dunks and falling lay-ups look pretty but they cause him to break down over an 82-game season. Forget VC, look at Kobe. He used to slash to the basket with reckless abandon but then he adjusted his game and now, he can rain down shots from almost anywhere on the court. That’s what Wade needs to do. He can still atack the the rim but he won’t have to do it as much and take a beating.

May.9 at 2:29 am

luisvc1551 says:
vince is the man 21-6-5 with a bad ankle. ask kidd if he is not missing him. went to dallas his scoring and assist drop cause he dont have vince anymore and last year 25-5-5 those are good numbers in every league………………..

May.12 at 3:26 pm

Nique says:
Glad to see someone agrees with me on Vince. With that said…Vince could still be a little more aggressive. Try posting up a little more, i don’t know. But he still gets it done.

May.15 at 9:20 pm

mont says:
i see there are some vince haters out here still some people just wont let the toronto days go as roy jones said yall must of forgot. when he was with toronto before any injuries he made toronto. he was unstoppable. then with new jersey they rode his back into the playoffs every year but this one and he still put up numbers that only kobe and lebron could. the dude basketball iq is off the chart. he makes other players better [ask miki moore] if vince would have never been injured [toronto days knee injuries] we would be talking about whether or not he was the best player in the leauge. i remember when he was better than kobe. no one could guard him. go to youtube and look up his stuff. he truly was half man half amazing
