Chuck Swirsky: Sick, Wicked, and Gone

The Raptors’ colorful play-by-play guy has left Canada for the Windy City.

(In other words, you can now leave the mute button alone when watching Toronto games.)

His act was funny until the past 2 seasons, then it just got nauseating or however you spell it. At least he knew the right time to walk away.

This man has the most passion and love for this team and city of Toronto than most raptor fans in general…he was an ambassador to the city and will always be the voice of the Raptors no matter who takes over. I wish Chuck the best and hope all is well with the family (since apparently it was a family matter than helped him make the decision to leave)

Tommy Patron says:
Poor Bill Wennington. Although, now NBA League Pass viewers will get the former radio man, Neil Funk doing play-by-play on TV with Stacey King doing color commentary. This will be one of the best local announcing teams in the league for sure. Bulls Icon, Johnny “Red” Kerr will now be a pre-game and half-time guy.

haha it’s funny to watch grammar nazis make mistakes of their own.
About Chuck: He was a bit annoying with the RAPTORS WINS RAPTORS WIN RAPTORS WIN, but I could care less. It’s the Raptors.

GM who Overpays says:
It’ll be tough to replace Swirsky. The guy was passionate about this team, and he knew his stuff about the raptors and the rest of the league. It might have been tough to get that sense if you don’t see the Raptors much because of some of his over-the-top phrases, but Raptors supporters who follow the team see it.
Can we really single him out for being one-sided? I’ve watched other teams’ broadcasts that we get here in the Toronto area and it’s comparable (the Atlantic division even New Jersey with Marv Albert and Action Jackson, Cleveland, Orlando, Phoenix, etc.).
He was better during the Orlando series than he was in the regular season, giving the Orlando players (particularly the guards who never missed) their due. He was the Raptors’ play-by-play guy but that also meant being the national tv play-by-play in Canada so maybe his monopoly on the country is where some of the hate comes from. He will definitely be missed. Even with the over-the-top emotions that come out. There was still substance. I mean, we’ve all watched the TNT/ESPN coverage of the games. Can we really say Reggie Miller, Dick Stockton (I might have screwed that name up), and even Mike Fratello are the best available?

GM who Overpays says:
For those who aren’t familiar with the Raptors owners (also the owners of the Toronto hockey and soccer teams), we’re lucky to have somehow gotten Collangelo. And not just got him, but with what seams to be autonomy in how he runs the team.
The Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) has been undercutting fans for decades. The NHL team (remember we’re in Canada) hasn’t won a championship since 1967 and they still sell out games against Nashville. I don’t see how the next guy in to replace Swirsky, doing play-by-play on national tv games and on raptors state tv, will be allowed any more room for criticizing the team/organization.

Garett says:
I’m going to pour out a .40 and dine on some delicious salami and cheese. Chuck didn’t have the highest bball IQ and was biased, like all home announcers perhaps should be to an extent, but I highly doubt the Raptors will find someone who can match his enthusiasm and genuine love of the game. Sports journalists up here treat basketball like an inbred distant cousin from Arkansas, so the Raptors will try and convert someone vaguely familiar with the sport into their play-by-play man, and it will be painful.
Onions, baby, onions. Indeed.

May.8 at 2:12 am

Garett says:
Tim McCalef from the Score is the Raptors only hope from within Canada. MLSE should snag him. He’s a Chuck 2.0- high energy, knows the basics of basketball, likely a homer, bald, but he has more upside potential and is a Canadian also I believe.

wassup says:
haha chuchk swirsky was a great announcer i thought. sure he didn’t know everything about basketball, but he sure did his homeowork on the raptors and ther other 29 teams in the league. ya have to give the guy some credit he had an incredible amount of passion for the raps.If people dont like him because hes one sided towards the raps then there kidding themselves haha. ive heard other broadcasters and from what ive heard there way more one sided for their home team… for example the guy who broadcasts the boston games is so ridiculously in favor of the celtics that i cant even watch them play because of it… pisses me off

May.8 at 9:34 pm

wassup says:
and yes i agree, tim mcCalef would be a money broadcaster. i love the guy i actually will watch the score tonight just to listen to the funny ass stuff him and sid are saying the whole time.

May.23 at 5:30 pm

Miles says:
We should get Bob Barker from Happy Gilmore doing play by play of the Raps: “That dunk was wrong b!tch”.
