Well, well. Final few days of the regular season and we still have not decided on the MVP. I think I have personally decided, but my vote doesn’t matter, so I’m pretty anxious to see how it all shakes out.
Biggest game of the season Friday night with the Lakers blowing out New Orleans in the first half and then managing to hang on in the final minutes to escape with the win. They sure made it interesting in the fourth. Kobe and Paul were both fantastic, but Kobe definitely had the play of the game and maybe his dunk of the year in the contest.
Lakers continued to roll on Sunday against the Spurs. I know they were without Manu, but they looked horrible in the second half of the game. As it stands right now, a win against Sacramento tomorrow night will ensure the Lakers finish with the top spot in the West with both New Orleans and Houston dropping their last games.
While we are talking about the Lakers, I’m pretty sure my favorite moment of the game was Kobe calling Farmar “Jordy” as though he was a 10-year old.
Actually, I think it was after Kobe and Gasol connected for a basket and Kobe looks at Pau and says “Estamos aqui” meaning “We are here”. Yes, you are Los Angeles Lakers. From the start of the season in complete disarray, there is no other team in this league that was a bigger mystery on opening day and certainly not a bigger surprise in the NBA, not even Boston and their fantastic record.
Denver went and dropped the ball against Utah, giving Golden State some hope, but after blowing out the Rockets last night they are all but in the playoffs, unless they somehow manage to lose to the Grizzlies. Sam thinks it could happen. I’ve learned not to ever bet on the Nuggets, inconsistency is the name of their game.
JR is still looking good for them.
The image of the Warriors sitting in a sports bar watching the game and cheering on Houston made me smile until I saw how horribly the Rockets were playing. I think George Karl may have paid off the Rockets, they looked that bad in the first half.
Mr. Arenas was looking fantastic on Friday and he did a great job at silencing his critics with his play. He had points, assists and energy in the fourth quarter to single-handedly take over and lead the Wizards to victory. The best part as a fan is that he’s back to doing what he loves and he looks happy to be back on the court. I’m rolling with the Wizards in the East.
The thought of the Seattle/Dallas game potentially being the last game in Seattle is deflating. Nice to see the players speaking about the move and really nice to see GP make an appearance and give the fans something exciting to remember and cheer about. KD and Earl Watson made sure the Sonics got the victory against Dallas last night so if nothing else, the final game was a good one.
Houston and Utah, Cleveland and Philly and Golden State and Phoenix all face each other tonight in games that will help decide where everyone is seeded for the postseason. Indiana, Miami and Sacramento will have opportunities to be spoilers and create trouble for Washington, Toronto and San Antonio as well. Only a couple of days left and then we will be in the middle of something special. I love this game.
Edit: I just finished reading Sam’s Western Conference Break down. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY. I cannot wait for these playoffs. I want the commercials, the starting line ups, the analysis, the postgame interviews, timeouts, everything. Ahhhh!
Washington 109 Philadelphia 95
With Caron Butler out against the Sixers with a bruised knee, Gilbert Arenas played his sixth man role to perfection Saturday night. Coming off of the bench he was the “assist” man before breaking out in the fourth when his team needed him, leading them to a 109-95 victory over Philadelphia. With the Sixers up by six at the start of the final quarter, Arenas busted out with a 7-0 run to put the Wizards back on top. This was only the beginning as Washington shut down the Sixers, allowing them only nine points in the quarter while dropping in 31 of their own, going from six down to 14 up. Arenas scored 12 points in the fourth, finishing 5-6 from the floor while also distributing the ball on the break to his teammates. In addition to scoring just nine points in the period, the Sixers shot only 1-15 from the floor and were helpless to stop the Wizards with Arenas leading them to the victory. Arenas finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals while Antawn Jamison led the Wizards offensively with 25 points and 13 rebounds. DeShawn Stevenson scored 19 points and dished 7 assists and Antonio Daniels added 12 points and 6 assists. Andre Iguodala led the Sixers with 22 points and 7 assists, Andre Miller scored 16 points and dished 10 assists, Willie Green and Thaddeus Young scored 15 points apiece while Samuel Dalembert added 9 points and 12 rebounds.
Utah 124 Denver 97
It isn’t common for the Denver Nuggets to score under 100 points in a game. Not only did they fail to reach triple-digits, they gave up a 40-point first quarter to the Jazz Saturday night and things only got worse for them from there. With Utah playing on their homecourt, they dominated the Nuggets from opening tip to the final buzzer, preventing Denver from clinching a playoff spot and placing them in a tie with the Warriors for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. With the Jazz leading 62-59 at the break, they did not let up for a moment in the second half, outscoring Denver 28-20 in the third quarter and going into the fourth up 11. When Denver did get within one point, Utah responded by going on a 12-2 run to take control of the game and the Jazz lead continued to grow until they finished the game up 27. Deron Williams survived a hard foul by Carmelo Anthony to finish with 19 points and 11 assists in the game. Carlos Boozer scored 20 points and dished 7 assists, Mehmet Okur added 20 points and 15 rebounds and Ronnie Brewer also scored 20 while adding 6 assists of his own. Allen Iverson led the Nuggets with 28 points and Anthony scored 22 while JR Smith scored 11 points off of the bench and Linas Kleiza added 12.
Golden State 122 LA Clippers 116
After seeing the Denver Nuggets drop an important game to the Jazz, the Warriors saw a glimmer of hope with regards to their playoff hopes. Facing the Clippers, they knew anything less than a victory would close the playoff door. With Elton Brand continuing to get his groove back after returning from the achilles injury, the Clippers put up a fight against Golden State and the Warriors found themselves in a dogfight until the final minutes as they could not shake LA, despite all of their starters finishing in double figures. After pouring in a 42-point first quarter and leading by 16, 42-26, the Warriors allowed the Clippers to get back into the game and did not have the victory sealed until back-to-back lay-ups from Stephen Jackson and Monta Ellis in the final two minutes of the game. Jackson finished with 28 points for the Warriors, Baron Davis scored 25 points to go with 9 assists, Al Harrington and Monta Ellis each finished with 17 points and Andris Biedrins added 10 points and 14 rebounds. The Clippers were led by 30 points and 10 boards from Cuttino Mobley. Al Thornton scored 25 points to go with 10 rebounds and 5 assists while Elton Brand added 21 points and 14 rebounds and Corey Maggette scored 22 points coming off of the bench.
Portland 108 Dallas 105
While the Mavericks have sealed a playoff spot and the Blazers are entirely out of the playoff race, the match up between the two teams on Saturday night was still an entertaining one. Brandon Roy and the rest of the Portland team came out playing like they had something to fight for. While they will not make the playoffs, they have a chance to finish the season with a winning record and they are going to do whatever they can to achieve this. This included a 37-point first quarter, putting them up by 16 points at the end of the opening period. While the Mavs tried to cut into the lead in the second quarter, the Blazer held onto a 64-50 lead at the break. It was in the third that Dallas started to come back, outscoring Portland 30-23 as they battled back the entire fourth quarter and eventually tied the game at 101 with less than a minute remaining. LaMarcus Aldridge had a three-point play for Portland to put them up 104-101 and then Jason Terry hit two free throws, leaving Dallas trailing by only one. With the game on the line, Travis Outlaw knocked down a jumper with 28 seconds remaining in the game and each team knocked down a set of free throws to set up the Mavericks with the final possession, trailing by three. Terry missed on his three-point attempt and the Blazers walked off of the floor with another victory. Brandon Roy finished with 23 points to lead Portland while Aldridge scored 22 points, Jarrett Jack added 19 points and 10 assists and Channing Frye scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. Steve Blake had added 16 points. Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 28 points, Eddie Jones had 16 points and 6 assists, Erick Dampier had 11 points and Brandon Bass added 12 off of the bench.
Denver 111 Houston 94
Knowing that they control their playoff destiny, the Denver Nuggets needed their game against the Rockets last night. Behind a big night from Allen Iverson, they got it, taking down Houston 111-94, after blowing the game open by halftime. Leading 24-18 at the end of the first quarter, the Nuggets outscored Houston 37-26 in the second quarter to take a 17-point halftime lead. Denver continued to roll in the second half extending their lead to as many as 25 points before the Rockets were able to get anything going offensively. The Nuggets were able to limit the minutes of their starters and give the reserves extended time. JR Smith responded by scoring 23 points in the game as the Rockets shot only 34% for the game as compared to the Nuggets 48%. Iverson led Denver with 33 points and 7 assists while Carmelo Anthony scored 11 points, Linas Kleiza scored 18 points and Marcus Camby grabbed 14 rebounds. Luther Head had 19 points to lead the Rockets while Tracy McGrady scored 16 and Steve Novak added 15. Luis Scola grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss.
LA Lakers 107 New Orleans 104
In the showdown between the top two teams in the West and the players that most feel are the top two in line for the MVP award, the Lakers came out on top against the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night. While the win looked like it was going to be an easy one as the Lakers jumped on the Hornets and led by as many as 30 in the second quarter, New Orleans had a lot of fight left in them as they came out firing to start the third and outscored LA 30-17 in the period, to cut the deficit to 82-75 at the start of the fourth. While the Lakers would put together a 17-6 run to extend their lead back into double-figures, New Orleans responded with a 12-1 run to cut the Laker lead down to four. After a three-pointer from Sasha Vujacic appeared to give LA some breathing room, Peja Stojakovic drilled consecutive three-pointers to cut the lead down to one with less than four minutes remaining. With the game on the line the Lakers were solid, scoring six straight points, including free throw from Ronny Turiaf, a three-pointer from Derek Fisher and then another free throw from Kobe Bryant. From there they were able to escape with the victory and the top spot in the West. Bryant finished with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists for the Lakers. Pau Gasol scored 25 points, Lamar Odom had 13 points and 16 rebounds and Derek Fisher added 15 points and 6 assists. Chris Paul led the Hornets with 15 points and 17 assists while Stojakovic scored 24 points, Tyson Chandler scored 18 points, Jannero Pargo had 17 points off of the bench and David West added 14.

Playoffs, here we come! Holly, I think your boy KB may have clinched the MVP with the Lakers big weekend wins over the Hornets and Spurs.
Apr.14 at 9:39 am
Eboy says:
Congrats to your boys, Holly. They should be sufficiently tired by round 2 after a 6 games series with the Nugs, too. Playoffs just around the bend, finally.
Apr.14 at 9:42 am
Bryan says:
I’d almost rather the Lakers get the number two seed so they can Knock Dallas out early and I like the nuggets so much I’d hate to see them out in the first round.

Logan says:
hey H! man, i am so excited for the Lakers now…..this is going to be awesome. great games back to back….

I am hyped. I am pumped. Beyond description. second half in yesterday’s game was simply fantastic. This race has been insane. I feel so lucky to watch this all unfold!

BETCATS says:
Robot Snakes!!! We beat Indy!!
Apr.14 at 9:45 am
TADOne says:
Both the Nugs and Dallas have the teams to pull off a first round upset against any of the top seeds. Denver is better with Nene back in the rotation and Dallas is still a good team that has showed some resiliency in the last 2 weeks. I’m excited to see the matchups come out.
Apr.14 at 9:46 am
Ryne Nelson says:
Holly, you’re the best with the recaps, as usual. Are we calling Jordan Farmar “Jordy” now? =)
Apr.14 at 9:48 am
Ryne Nelson says:
@TAD - There will be no 1-8 or 2-7 upsets this season. It just doesn’t happen with that type of frequency…even in a conference as close as this.
Apr.14 at 9:48 am
Myles Brown says:
Kobe Bryant’s better than your favorite player. Admit it. Oh, and Denver lost the season series to the Lakers 3-0. I’d rather see them than GS anytime.
Apr.14 at 9:49 am
TADOne says:
Tyne, I’m not saying it will happen, I am saying there is a better chance of it “possibly” happening this year out of any of the previous years. I know the history of the 1-8, 2-7 matchups.
Apr.14 at 9:50 am
Myles Brown says:
And Dallas lost to Seattle last night.
Apr.14 at 9:50 am
TADOne says:
I mean “Ryne”.
Apr.14 at 9:51 am
Eboy says:
If AI and Melo can stay hot for the entire series and the Nugs contain Gasol (which shouldn’t be too difficult with their front line) they can be spoilers.
Apr.14 at 9:51 am
TADOne says:
This is true Myles. But Seattle was playing with some extra emotion last night, being that they may have played their last game in Seattle and all.
Apr.14 at 9:52 am
Bryan says:
Well said Eboy which is why if I’m a Laker fan I’d rather see Dallas..Kobe has their number.
Apr.14 at 9:53 am
BETCATS says:
Sleepless in Seattle!!!! The shock that they lost must be killin those texa$$holes
Apr.14 at 9:53 am
Logan says:
come playoff time, defense is going to be very important…as much as I love AI (and the block today was crazy), they just do not have the defensive intensity….LA will get them in 5 or 6
Apr.14 at 9:54 am
Tariq says:
TAD: No way in Hell can Denver upset San Antonio, even though I’d love that improbable scenario to materialize. They culd upset the Hornets though.
Apr.14 at 9:54 am
Myles Brown says:
Anything that is contingent upon the Nuggets paying defense makes me laugh. And that’s true about Dallas, but if they cant beat a team over .500, and they cant beat a team over .250 playing with added incentive, then who are they gonna beat in the playoffs? Although it would be ironic if they beat New Orleans.
Apr.14 at 9:56 am
Logan says:
and I like Dallas’s chances against the Hornets too….Dallas need Stackhouse for that x-factor in the playoffs…whats his injury status
Apr.14 at 9:58 am
Tariq says:
Eboy: Denver is not locking down Gasol. Not even if Alex English suited up. Although even he wasn’t known for his defense, so not sure why I brought him up.
Apr.14 at 9:59 am
Logan says:
is someone putting together a montage of rejections by Kobe this year? i mean the blocks this year have been straight up insulting….todays reached half court…..its like the old adidas commercial where he kept rejecting this kid…only, instead of the kid its been yao, duncan, kirelenko, tim thomas and company
Apr.14 at 9:59 am
BETCATS says:
Dallas lost its x-Factor (Harris) and picked up a Social Security user (Kidd). Thats where they messed up. If they still had Harris i wouldnt hate them. As Much.
Apr.14 at 9:59 am
Tariq says:
But I don’t think Dallas and Denver/GS are gonna be around for Kobe’s trophy ceremony.
Apr.14 at 10:02 am
Logan says:
true….i dont think even Kidd expected the west to be so crazy…i mean he’s been in the swamp for years…..he has post season experience though..
Apr.14 at 10:02 am
BETCATS says:
PHX takes all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Off/on topic, has yall seen the commercial where it is half Kobe / half Shaq faces on the TV saying the exact same thing? And comments
Apr.14 at 10:03 am
Logan says:
which counts when you’re playing a team 4-5-6 times in a row and coaches can make instant adjustments and rotations….
thoughts on Phoenix San Antonio match up?
Apr.14 at 10:04 am
BETCATS says:
Yeah logan, but he just isnt that good anymore. He must have left his game in the swamp, all he does is PASS and if you double team Howard and make Dirk try to be clutch, the Bobcats could beat them.
Apr.14 at 10:04 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
BET, the commercials are only going to get better as the playoffs go on. The L’s got some great one’s planned and waiting to drop!
Apr.14 at 10:05 am

BET, yeah I’ve seen that happen a few times in Dallas….he used to drive in more frequently and be more aggressive on offense….i think its something about Avery’s voice that must be throwing his game….heh
Apr.14 at 10:07 am
Holly MacKenzie says:
haha Tariq, I loved it!
Apr.14 at 10:09 am
BETCATS says:
Yeah holly, i know they do. My favorite all time is Karl Malone as a Laker tryin to steal the championship trophy

Ryne Nelson says:
@BET - Can Diesel help the Suns against the run-and-gun Warriors tonight? Or will he be spending most of the game on the bench?
Apr.14 at 10:12 am
hursty says:
Nugs wont upset the spurs. Thats the matchup same as last year.
Apr.14 at 10:13 am
BETCATS says:
Easy ryne. Did Kareem run with the Lakers? if Shaq can do that role (which he can) and just do the passing to start the break after his rebound (he claims he is the best passing big man so why not) then i do not see anyone stoping the Suns
Apr.14 at 10:14 am
hursty says:
@ ryne. nope. not if he matches up against Jax and Biedrins.
Apr.14 at 10:14 am
TADOne says:
The Spurs still have to pass the Hornets to get into the top 2 seeds. If the Lakers and Hornets end up 1 and 2, I can certainly see a team like the Nugs or Mavs giving the Hornets a few scares.
Apr.14 at 10:15 am
BETCATS says:
Shaq can shut Biedris down on the Offensive Glass (thats the only way he scores) so he should be a non factor
Apr.14 at 10:15 am
Logan says:
I think shaq will be an asset come playoffs, just needs to rebound better and keep outta foul trouble
Apr.14 at 10:15 am
Ryne Nelson says:
Great points, BET. It’s just that the last time these two teams met, O’Neal was sitting on the pine most of the game and committing mad turnovers when he was on the hardwood.
Apr.14 at 10:15 am
Cub Buenning says:
The Nuggets actually love their match-up with the Lakers despite not fairing especially against them this year. I agree to some degree. Any team that wants to roll is a good match for Denver. Just avoid San Antonio. Winning in the SLC is impossible. Scouts from around the league have made mention that NO TEAM gets any calls in Utah. That is, other than the home side.
Apr.14 at 10:15 am
BETCATS says:
Mavs will only upset themselves when they are 1ne and done
Apr.14 at 10:16 am

The Lakers won in SLC. Handily. And I’d bet another star on Russ’ head that the Nuggets don’t last past 5 games.
Apr.14 at 10:20 am
Tariq says:
Forget the potential upsets, I think the 3-6 and 4-5 matchups are gonna be really crazy. And the point Sam made about Utah and home court advantage is really crucial. If Utah drop to the fifth seed, they’re done.
Apr.14 at 10:21 am
Tariq says:
Myles: Speaking of which…where are said stars?
Apr.14 at 10:25 am
Cub Buenning says:
Myles, the Nuggets haven’t gotten past the fifth game of the postseason since the Mt. Mutomobo days, so….
Apr.14 at 10:26 am
Tom says:
I think Kobe pretty much clinched the MVP after this weekend, although i was very worried that they managed to blow a 20pt lead against the hornets, and struggled to contain the spurs in the 1st half. Favorite play of the weekend was farmar’s alley-oop to turiaf with Kobe playing cheerleader on the bench…..it’s nice to have LA back.
Apr.14 at 10:27 am
BETCATS says:
Kobe 4 MVP

and is it just me or did the raptors get beat by the pistons bench yesterday? Man, they better pray they don’t get them in the 1st round.

hursty says:
utah was 5th seed last year. beat rockets 4/3 and g state. Still, to play devils advocate, g state winning the playoff series as amazing as it was made the playoff battles worse. They seemed drained against utah except for te blowout game where Baron had THAT Dunk.

TADOne says:
Tom: Yes, Detroit’s bench did beat the Raps in the 4th quarter by 5. And right now, Toronto and Philly have identical records, with the Raps right now in the 6th spot due to head to head matchups with the Sixers. So, as of today, Detroit plays the Sixers, but it could very well be the Raptors.
Apr.14 at 10:36 am
hursty says:
thats almost a wasted matchup if the raps play them. Since bosh went down they played cr@p. theyve only played slightly better since he came back.

Bosh should be traded this summer, he seems unhappy. Maybe the Bobcats could get him to solve the problem Okafor will leave us…..
Apr.14 at 10:39 am
BETCATS says:
we could have a YOUNG big 3 of Bosh, Wallace, Richardson. Then we could get a good coach, and bam
Apr.14 at 10:39 am
hursty says:
its not like they can compete anyways for a ring. It must suck to make the playoffs consistently (for any team) and know that your roster is not even a slim chance of getting past the 2nd round-if you get that far. My rockets are the example. although this year was sposed to be different. we had the roster, team game. Defence. ‘weeps silently’
Apr.14 at 10:39 am
TADOne says:
Hell will freeze before Toronto trades Bosh.
Apr.14 at 10:42 am
hursty says:
Wallace was picked instead of Arenas by Sac town. with the 26th pick. imagine of sac had either right now. playoffs i think. Gil, martin, wallace, Ron Ron, Miller. thats pretty nice.

hursty says:
Like with carter? then the losing happened after such a promising team? Damon, Vince, tmac, mo pete etc.
Apr.14 at 10:44 am
BETCATS says:
will ten the entire team will be traded (besides Parker and TJ Ford and Moon) over the summer because Bosh seems to have no chemistry with everyone else.
Apr.14 at 10:46 am
hursty says:
Bosh is too nice. Too friendly and not as physically as he could be on the court, he should get into a fight. Sam Mitchell has his back.
Apr.14 at 10:47 am
BETCATS says:
nobody knew of Wallace until the bobcats found him, but when Peja got hurt some could see he would be great. And hursty, you nailed it with the carter comment.

does Sam Mitchell still want to fight Charles Barkley?

Thanks bet. Wallace is more versatile than Marion. More athletic, better shooter, D.. slightly less. But the cats interior D is better than the suns so its hard to tell on a team standpoint. I think Sam siad that Charles was not tough. Fight him? i forget. Thinkin about it, lmao at the video of charles throwing the ball at shaq! his eyes widen and then…. well its funny sh!t.

he may not tell the press but i can see him going to the GM and asking for out, or for some better help (aka trade 3/4 of the team) without letting the media know, but if ANY player is unhappy (Damon Jones, Kwame Brown) they will have no problem finding a troll-like reporter to tell it to and that gets the job done more often then not (kobe, but he got Gasol)
Apr.14 at 10:58 am
hursty says:
If the nets had Kmart, kidd, Jefferson for one more year i think they could have gotten to the finals again. Sheed vs. Kmart at their primes woulda been amazing.

Honestly, I’m not sure why New Orleans would WANT the top seed. That means they’d have a possibility of playing Utah in the second round… and Utah just obliterates them every time.

Holly, is kobe like that on the bench every game?? Love the guy as a player, but he never comes off as realistic during those moments, this game especially he seemed to try too hard to be a cheerleader and i couyldn’t help but winder if it was because of Spike

RV: You are just realizing this about Kobe?

RV says:
Tad, I said he “never”…i’ve always thought that about him, but mostly from interviews, i haven’t seen much of him on the bench with a mic on

Tom says:
To me, he’s been coming off a lot more genuine lately, and in the games i’ve watched this season, he’s always one of the 1st guys off the bench to give odom, turiaf or whoever a high-5 or a pat on the back
Apr.14 at 12:12 pm
RV says:
the high 5s and pat on the backs is natural to most guys, its what he says that seems forced to me
Apr.14 at 12:18 pm
TADOne says:
Ah, gotcha RV. I agree that when I see him like that on the bench, it always seems like he is looking for the camera that may be pointed on him and is trying to “look” a certain way. Then again, it is probably just a more mature Kobe we are seeing.

RV says:
yeah, but last night it was SEVENTEEN cameras, 18 with spike’s

Steve says:
The Nuggets are going to be a force to be reckoned with. The Lakers have beat us up this season, but that doesnt worry nuggets fans. We can pull together our defense, and AI/melo combo is unstoppable if they both are hot.

The more cameras trained on Kobe Bryant, the better he plays.

As a Laker fan i’d much rather see the Nuggets than the Mavericks. Not only did they sweep the season series from the Nuggets but they kicked the crap out of them. They one the first game by 28, the seasond game by 12 despite Iversons 51pts and that Kobe sat out all but 30 seconds of the third quarter, abd they won the 3rd game by 21 even though Kobe only took 7 shots. Plain & simple if you don’t play defense the Lakers will destroy you.

PP, the Lakers were FANTASTIC in the second. Parker was kiling us in the first and I was worried but we took care of things. I personally loved how D Fish killed them in the third… You’d think they would remember he can kinda shoot.. .4, anyone? PS, See the experiment with Farmar and Kapono, showing you need less than .4 to get a shot off? Interesting.

The Life and Times of Roger Rabbit says:
This is way off topic but did anybody see the video of the girl who was grounded for meeting up with a guy from myspace? It’s the funniest home video I have ever seen. I would link to it but Holly would probably delete it like she did with my other post with the video of a guy front flipping into the rim on AllStar Weekend. You’re a hater Holly. You’re just mad cuz I stack paper to the ceiling and I ride on 20 inch chrome. Just kidding Holly. On a basketball related topic I hope the Nuggets lose out and the Warriors make the playoffs.
