The Post Up: Hornets Fall Short
While the Warriors and Nuggets take care of business leading up to Thursday
By: Holly MacKenzie
And, we are back! One night off and I feel like I have been thrown for a loop. After such a great regular season this year the offseason will not be fun.
Before we go any further, congratulations to Kansas for one fantastic finish. I’m happy the game was an exciting one and still smile when I think of how pretty that shot by Chalmers was. While I was happy for Kansas, I had a hard time when they show the losing team on the bench. Kills me.
So does “One Shining Moment”. I’m such a girl sometimes.
Because Monday was an off night in the NBA world, we had a busy slate last night but a lot of the games really didn’t mean much as they were between teams who are out of the playoff hunt or between losing teams and those with their spots locked up (Boston, Detroit, etc). Still, things out West continue to be crazy and as of today, the Nuggets and Warriors are tied for that eighth spot. Denver does hold the tie-breaker, but the showdown is set for Thursday.
Denver @ Golden State, Thursday 8pm Est. TNT. Mark it down.
Not sure if you all read the power rankings on nba.com, but I influenced a ranking! This was fun, but not as fun as being called a “SLAM scribe”. Thanks to Ben Couch for giving me my moment to shine, it was a nice surprise.
The Boston/Milwaukee game was pretty crazy. Boston is up by 20, I’m flipping through channels and suddenly the game is in overtime! Way for the Bucks to come back. That disaster of a Mohawk that Big Baby is rocking needs to go, seriously. Back to the game, the Celtics prevailed in overtime and I was never really worried, even when they were down.
Ridiculous stat that came up during the broadcast: The Celtics are currently tied with the 95-96 Bulls for fewest double-digit losses in a season with two. TWO. Just madness.
Josh Smith may have had a nice dunk against the Pacers, but the damn Hawks folded big time in the game last night.
The Knicks almost choked away their win over the Pistons in the final minutes. Stuckey continues to look good. Anyone else excited to see how the Detroit rookies will do with their first taste of the playoffs?
Al Jefferson with 40 and 10 in the TWolves loss two-point loss to the Bobcats.
Rudy Gay dropped in a career-high 36 points in a loss to the Suns last night. Carmelo Anthony also had 36 last night, continuing his scoring rampage he has been on the past week or so.
While the Hornets fell to the Jazz and the Suns won against the Grizzlies, what did the Lakers do? Lose to the Blazers, of course. Sixth straight loss in Portland. Oh, I was a bitter one last night. Brandon Roy had a field day and it was maddening to watch.
Since the Hornets had a horrible game after the first quarter last night, the game of the night was sort of a bust. With the win, the Jazz own the season-series 3-1.
Think we will have CP3 and Deron combine to shoot 4-22 in a game again? I don’t think so, either.
Kasib Powell! The D-leaguer who has been playing in Miami had 18 points last night as the Bulls lost to the Heat. Yes, losing to the Heat can’t be fun. I’m interested to see how many of these guys currently on the Heat roster will get to stick around in the L next year.
Utah 77 New Orleans 66
In a match up between two of the top point guards in the NBA, Utah’s Deron Williams continued to get the best of Chris Paul as the Jazz held the Hornets to their lowest scoring output of the season, dropping them 77-66 in New Orleans last night. After they led by only three at the end of the first quarter, the Jazz stepped up their defense and the Hornets did not reach 20 points in any of the three remaining quarters. With both Williams and Paul struggling from the floor, Utah had players step up while New Orleans did not. The Hornets shot only 37% for the game as Paul was held scoreless in the first half and finished with only four points on 2-11 field goals to go with his 9 assists. By the time the fourth quarter rolled around, the Jazz had extended their lead to as many as 20 points and the Hornets could not catch up, despite holding Utah to only nine fourth quarter points. Peja Stojakovic had 15 points to lead the Hornets and David West scored 14 to go with 7 rebounds. Williams scored only 4 points for the Jazz but added 16 assists as Mehmet Okur finished with 22 points and 17 rebounds, Carlos Boozer, Andrei Kirlenko and Paul Milsap scored 10 points apiece.
Phoenix 127 Memphis 113
With Shaquille O’Neal resting a sore hip, the Suns started off slowly but quickly found their rhythm against the Memphis Grizzlies and dropped them 127-113 to stay within one game of the Lakers and the Pacific division title. After trailing by three points at the end of the first quarter, the Suns got to work and outscored Memphis 24-15 in the second to take a 54-48 lead into the break. Their offense only got smoother in the second half as they outscored the Grizzlies 35-27 in the third as Amare Stoudemire dropped in 11 points and Raja Bell added 12 in the period, helping the Suns to extend their lead to as many as 19 points before going into the fourth up 70-59. While the Grizzlies would get within eight points in the final minutes, a three from Steve Nash quickly put Phoenix back up by double-digits and they went on to the victory from there. Stoudemire finished with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists for the Suns. Bell had 18 points, Grant Hill scored 17 points and Steve Nash and Leandro Barbosa each had 16 points with Nash dishing 8 assists. The Grizzlies were led by Rudy Gay’s 36 points while Mike Conley Jr. scored 19 points, Hakim Warrick had 12 points and Kyle Lowry added 13 off of the bench.
Golden State 140 Sacramento 132
In the middle of a battle for their playoff lives, the Golden State Warriors have a three game home stretch and their first opponent was the Sacramento Kings. With their home crowd behind them and their offense flowing, the Warriors defeated the Kings 140-132 last night. While the Kings were without both Ron Artest and Brad Miller, they hung around with the Warriors despite trailing by seven at the end of the first quarter and never leading in the contest. Francisco Garcia and Kevin Martin did their part to keep the Kings close but they were unable to complete the comeback against the Warriors who had scored a season-high 77 points in the first half of the game. While the Kings got within eight points in the fourth quarter, the Warrior lead never seemed in doubt and they were able to get a crucial win leading up to their home game against Denver on Thursday night. Baron Davis led Golden State with 3 points and 9 assists while Stephen Jackson scored 20 points, Andris Biedrins had 17 points and 17 rebounds, Al Harrington scored 17 points and Monta Ellis added 16 points. The Kings were led by Garcia’s 31 points while Martin had 29 points and John Salmons scored 22 points in the loss.
Denver 117 LA Clippers 99
With Golden State winning their game against the Kings, the Nuggets also needed to win against the Clippers to remain on the inside of the playoff race the West. Luckily for Denver, while the Clippers have received an emotional boost from the return of Elton Brand, they have not put together all of the pieces of the puzzle yet. The Nuggets were able to pour in a 40-point second quarter while holding the Clippers to 24 points in the period as they pulled away and turned the game into a blowout before halftime. Holding onto a 63-47 at the break, the Nuggets were able to coast to the victory in the second as the Clippers were able to finish the game out evenly with the Nuggets, but were unable to cut into the lead at all and fell, 117-99. Carmelo Anthony continued his scoring binge for Denver, finishing with 36 points on 13-17 shooting. Allen Iverson scored 21 points to go with 9 assists, Marcus Camby had 1 points and 18 rebounds, Linas Kleiza had 15 points and JR Smith added 10 off of the bench. Cuttino Mobley had 25 points to lead the Clippers as Brand had 17 in his fourth game back and Quinton Ross added 10 points in the loss.
Dallas 99 Seattle 93
Hoping to extend their lead on the seventh spot in the Western Conference playoff race, the Dallas Mavericks were happy to host the Seattle Supersonics last night. While the two teams were matched up evenly for the first three quarters and Dallas led only 46-44 at the break, they built their lead to 70-63 at the start of the fourth. In the final quarter the Mavericks used an 18-4 run as they blew the game open and went ahead by as many as 20 points. While the Sonics would get within nine points Dallas responded by immediately dropping in 11 straight and the Sonics wouldn’t get any closer closer, shooting only 38% in the game while allowing Dallas to connect on 50% of their shots. Jason Terry had 22 points to lead the Mavericks. Josh Howard scored 17 points, Dirk Nowitkzki scored 11 points to go with 12 rebounds, Brandon Bass scored 13 points and Erick Dampier added 10 points and 9 rebounds. Earl Watson had 22 points in the loss for Seattle, as Kevin Durant scored 16 points while Jeff Green and Nick Collison added 11 points apiece.

BET, I know you love your boys but if they are not in the playoff race, they don’t get the space at this point in the season. Too many teams/stats/schedules to keep track of, in the West alone! Nice game from JRich, though. Thanks for the love though, I’m sending it back to you.

Ryne Nelson says:
I’m telling you all — and this is 100 percent personal opinion — I’d rather build my team around Deron Williams than Chris Paul. I’ve seen what this guy can do in big-time situations, where he is capable of leading his team. NCAA National Championship game in ‘05, Western Conference Finals in his sophomore NBA season. In addition, Deron is far less prone to injury being a big guard. Paul already has missed plenty of time to injury and has had several scares this season. Paul may be more talented, but I think Deron has the better hoops IQ. This I know after watching him lead his team at practice several times.
You can’t go wrong with either, but I’d take the gamble with my guy DWill.

I’m sticking with CP and nothing will change that, but I hear you Ryne. PS, thanks for posting that damn LO flagrant foul in all of its glory. That combined with the “Beat LA” chants had me disgustingly frustrated.

ImHereNow says:
Paul and Williams cancelled each other out, but Deron had the more important assists. What about Knicks beating Pistons- I like rookie Wilson Chandler from your pony video spot- he looks like he could be a suprisingly good player considering he was drafted 2nd round

Hey Holly, I *really* didn’t like that call. I don’t think there’s one person outside of PDX who thinks that was a flagrant 2. I’m not even sure it was a flagrant to be honest….It was just a hard fall.

heh i doubt LA is going to get blown out in the remaining few games BET…Clips, Hornets, Spurs and Kings…..competitive games…nevertheless I know Kobe will keep it together for the last few games..

Ryne, in his media time he said, “I feel like if we were going to start the playoffs in two weeks, I’d have a mental breakdown,” he said. “I have to do a better job this summer, getting my body in great shape, because I plan on getting into the playoffs real soon.” He’s a real talent and it’s crazy to think of what he can do once he IS in good shape.

A survey of basketball beat writers shows that the Most Valuable Player award is a two-man race between Kobe Bryant and Chris Paul. Bryant, named by all 21, had 10 first-place votes, eight seconds and three thirds. Paul, named by all 21, had 8-9-4. Boston’s Kevin Garnett was a distant third, named on 15 ballots with 2-3-10. Only four players were named, the last being LeBron James of Cleveland, who made six ballots and got 1-1-4. is there any way to verify this?

I’d take Rose. Eboy, because they already have Wade right?
Apr.9 at 10:26 am
BETCATS says:
also Tyler Hansbourgh got EXPOSED by Kannas!!!!! He cannot block a shot worth sh!t. All he does is FLOP. IF no-name Kannas big men like Aldrick (or whatever that guy’s name was who averaged like 2.3 ppg but turned into a beast v. UNC is) can MURDER him and he does not PASS then he is in some trouble come draft time
Apr.9 at 10:28 am
BETCATS says:
Yeah izzo, but if Joey Dorsey can shut him down, what will happen when he gets to the L? Then who can stop him? Spencer Hawes? Marcin Gortat? Sean May?

Apr.9 at 10:31 am
TADOne says:
Tyler’s NBA ready game has always been in question. You cannot shoot from the hip and expect that sh*t to fly in the L. And yes Eboy, please explain your rationale, even though I’m sure I know what you will say, you may surprise me.

Eboy says:
No, Shia, because Beasley could make Haslem or Marion expendable and that one of them could move to bring in a proven point to play with Wade and mix in with Beasley, Marion/Haslem, Zo & whoever else that winds up sticking.
Apr.9 at 10:35 am
BETCATS says:
Tad, he got shut down, all you need to do to stop Tyler is put a hand in his face and have help ready. Once he gets the ball he does not pass it back out. It is very frustrating to see him on D, against Kannas he watched Darrel Jackson and (…..) Arthur and even Brandon Rush dunk no contesting anything, just some FLOPS the refs gave him because of all the awards he won
Apr.9 at 10:35 am
Eboy says:
Rose definitley has ability but he is in no way going to be an “elite” point guard. Unless he was, he’s not worth the risk for a team that needs ANY type of elite player possible, which Beasley seems to have the better potential for.
Apr.9 at 10:36 am
BETCATS says:
What team with surplus PG’s would want Haslem or Marion, Eboy?
Apr.9 at 10:36 am
Eboy says:
BET, Hansbroughs willingness to bang inside and his ability to get offensive rebounds will let him have a LONG career in the lig, like a Jeff Foster type player.
Apr.9 at 10:37 am
BETCATS says:
Eboy, maybe trade Marion for a first round pick and a huge contract (Brian Cardinal?) that is worth nothing? Try and get Rose or Eric Gordon with that pick?
Apr.9 at 10:37 am
Eboy says:
Not sure, that’s a question for next season, but it would be good to have a strong trade chip which Haslem would be more than Marion if only because of his contract.
Apr.9 at 10:38 am
Bryan says:
Rose is gonna be elite.
Apr.9 at 10:39 am
TADOne says:
I’d have to disagree. I definitely think that Rose could be an “elite” PG in the L. The man has the size, vision, body control, temperment, and size that will make him NBA ready his rookie year. He showed me a lot in the tournament, and he will only get better, IMO. I love Beasley, but I guess it depends on the team that ends up with the #1 pick.
Apr.9 at 10:39 am
BETCATS says:
NO Eboy, Foster plays D, when the Bobcats take him (they will, trust me) and he plays like a fan watching the game on the court (not a bad idea, as Time Warner arena has 5 people in it) and turns Ben Wallace or Joey Pryzibllia or somebody who is trash into a weapon, i will just say ‘i told you so’
Apr.9 at 10:40 am
BETCATS says:
Eboy, i think the Bobcats would trade their pick away for either Haslem or Marion, we need one of them to take Emeka’s place
Apr.9 at 10:40 am
TADOne says:
Damn, I said size twice. Maybe, in a subliminal way, that was appropriate.
Apr.9 at 10:42 am
Eboy says:
TAD, Rose forces the action way too much. He’ll need a few seasons to get that game down to be elite in the league and the Heat and their horribleness are already looking for a rapid turnaround and a green point guard with a penchant for turnovers won’t fit the rebuilding process Riley wants to try and amke next season, imo.
Apr.9 at 10:43 am
BETCATS says:

Apr.9 at 10:46 am
TADOne says:
Forcing the action is a bad thing? Maybe for the Heat, but I happen to like his aggressive game. He plays that way because that is how Calipari coaches him to be in that offense. I’m quite sure he could play a slow down, half court game as well. And Chris Paul was also turnover prone back at Wake Forest.
Apr.9 at 10:46 am
Bryan says:
Gordon is over rated.

BETCATS says:
Shia that is some crazy sh!t you just typed. Eric Gordon is a BEAST. A MONSTER. After University of Indiana games, you have to check under your bed and look in the closets to make sure he didnt pop out the TV. Eric Gordon is #2 only to Mike Beasly
Apr.9 at 10:49 am
TADOne says:
I agree, Gordon is overrated in my book too.

did anyone see the boxscore from the hornets/jazz game? paul and deron, and boozer and west all had nearly identical stats, from fg’s to rebounds, that game truly came down to the role players stepping up.
Apr.9 at 11:00 am
Bryan says:
You know for all the talk of Lebron’s numbers trumping Kobe’s , since the all star break, Kobe has put up 30, 7, 5.5…to Lebron’s 30 8 and 7. While Kobe has the better defensive numbers and better outside shooting percentage..Plus the rebounding disparity could be because Lebron plays primarily in the frontcourt.
Apr.9 at 11:04 am
Bryan says:
Well so much for that sparking anything, I’m off to work see you all later.

Odom’s been killing it lately. Good for him. By far my favorite laker. The Heat would’ve won a title with him, Caron, and Wade. They still would’ve beaten the Mavs, and now the team would be in contention to do it again. Oh, and Stan Van might have stayed.

Michael says:
can someone please tell me why Deron Wiliams isn’t getting the same type of MVP love that CP3 is getting. He’s done the exact same thing that Chris has done. Before D-will Carlos Boozer was just a mediocre Power forard who couldn’t stay healthy and had agruably the worst contract in the league. He made freaking Memet Okur an All-star.
Apr.9 at 2:11 pm
RV says:
Boozer does his thing on his own most of the time, his 15 footer has improved a lot, he does a lot of the dribble, pump fakes, etc. Deron isn’t exactly setting him up. Deron does set up the other guys, Okur just stands and shoots…basically deron has more weapons around him, so his assists come more from the other guys just being good enough to score the basket, CP3 is more about getting guys high percentage shots. Plus, CP3 seems to just know what to do, he’s always right on about when he has to score and when he has to create.

buttuglybrazilianbarbiedollballbusterbuildingbridgesbetweenbadbasketballbastardsbooingblazingandboinking says:
RV what are you talking about? Peja is one of the best outside shooters in the NBA. And West is no slouch either. Deron sets up Boozer all the time. Me thinks you don’t actually watch D-will play much and are just going along with the media hype.

RV says:
Buttugly, the point of my post was CP3 has mostly been a set up man, while Deron gets most of his assists from giving it to the right guy. It doesn’t mean Deron doesn’t have the ability to creat plays, just that he doesn’t have to because the guys around him have enough athleticism or skill to get to the hoop after the pass. Peja is a shooter, not exactly a scorer, Tyson is challenged offensively, West is nice, but has limited size and range and doesn’t have various moves like Boozer, CP has to spoon feed these guys more than Deron. Last but not least, you have to look at their record, Utah is playing well as of late, but previously were only in the 4th spot due to a weaker division, otherwise they would have been a lower seed most of the season. The hornets have been right up there most of the year.
