T-Mac Not so Willing to Accept the Pressure This Time

by Marcel Mutoni

This was Tracy McGrady before last year’s Playoffs, confident and bordering on cocky, saying the fate of the first round Rockets/Jazz series rested entirely on his shoulders. When he failed to get past the first round for the umpteenth time, it led to tears, as these things sometimes do.

This time around, Mac is willing to spread the blame around should his team get an early jump on their summer vacation.

“It’s a team sport,” McGrady said. “We go out there and play as a team, compete as a team. I’m not out there by myself. That’s what I tell people. Don’t single me out.”

“This season, it’s a lot deeper team. And we got a different style of play. There is a lot more motion on the offensive end. I’m not going to put that phrase on me this year.”

Depending on how this crazy regular season’s final night plays out, the Rockets’ first round opponent will either be the Spurs, Suns, or last year’s first round foe, the Jazz. Despite their exceptional play without the injured Yao Ming, Houston will be hard-pressed to make it to the second round.

Smart guy, that McGrady.

Good luck man!

hursty says:
love ya tmac. You’ll be alright. KG didnt get out of the 1st from 97-03 then made the conference finals.

Apr.16 at 9:08 am

maio says:
If they win it will be because of him, though.

Apr.16 at 9:10 am

hursty says:
I think theyll be ok if they steal a game in the first road trip they make. More likely against the jazz i hope. Scola can play on Boozer for periods and hopefully AK47 keeps shooting blanks the rest of the post season. If Korver lights up thats an issue but Novak and Luther can get back those points. I’d rather have Bobby Jackson play on Deron, hes got more length and is a better shooter

Apr.16 at 9:22 am

hursty says:
maio, the x factor is battier. He needs to shoot MORE and go to the hole. He cant be a two dimensional player in shooting 3’s and playing D. He is an awesome defensive player but he needs to step up offensively because its not like Kirilenko will go for even a 17-20 point series. much less hit 25 the entire series. That means he needs to shoulder more attack load off tmacs shoulder, skips leg (i know that shane is also injured) and help even the keel if Okur keeps up his strong form much less Boozer and Williams. 7 game series i think. or 6 if we steal one on the road and get home court advantage.

Apr.16 at 9:23 am

Logan says:
i really hope TMac gets out of the first round however I doubt they can win against any of the three teams in a 7 game series. What maio says is true, it will take something special from TMac on a nightly basis…

People's Princess says:
Just a coupla things hursty..
1)No matter what Scola does,Boozer’s getting his 20-10.period.
2)It’ll some down to T-Mac shutting down DWil on D.BJax is strictly limited mins at this stage of his career.
3)The battle of the undersized baby-eaters:Millsap and Landry
4)Memo’s sweet, sweet stroke is putting Houston to sleep in 5.

Apr.16 at 9:24 am

Logan says:
i have not seen Battier on offense…i know he has those jumpers but never seen him take it to the rim

Apr.16 at 9:32 am

hursty says:
@ logan- its quite amazing actually. Imagine watching a man learning how to run in the space of 5 or 6 steps. From a paraplegic(sp?) to a 100m sprinter in 2 seconds. He kinda lopes around then goes into a rolling gait.
@PP no way to stop Boozer thats very true but matching his aggression with scola and limiting his points/boards above the 20 and 10 so its not 25/15+.
I cant see Brewer getting too much time in the playoffs despite his athleticism. Just hard fouls and an extra body for 10 minutes a night on tmac to wear him down.
baby-eaters? Dwight Howards undersized cousins.
lastly, Fu(k Okur.

Apr.16 at 9:35 am

hursty says:
thing is logan, he can actually shoot freebies. remember the slam news on him making 100 in a row? Thing is, not alot of contact on the 3 point line, and he wont shoot it if theres a guy right in his face unless its a shot clock issue.

Apr.16 at 9:35 am

Logan says:
@hursty - heh thats quite a description. the whole team will have to not let up at all for houston. they can’t relax at any position….and ditto for Okur

Apr.16 at 9:37 am

Rasheedionics says:
Does anyone truly believe Rockets have a chance to get out of first round??? Even their best player doesn’t believe they can.

Apr.16 at 9:39 am

Logan says:
yeah he needs to be aggressive….whats he averaging, 9 points? just remembered they still have steve ‘franchise’ on the roster. Any update on him or is he out for the season? heh there was a time when he could have been a HUGE influence on a series…

People's Princess says:
Baby eaters is in reference to Maxiell’s nickname down at Detroit Bad Boys.Man alive these undersized PF’s have come to roost.Craig Smith,Landry,Maxiell,Millsap et al.

hursty says:
The people who say hes got one of the highest player basketball IQ’s are absolutely correct (yes, even espn). Behind Snow (virtually retired) theres no-one i would rather see pacing the sidelines. LeBron is very intelligent but he wont ever coach. the guys who can throw a pass over their head on a twisting drive e.g paul, nash, kobe are the dudes you get a good feel for being great readers of the game, they know exactly where everyone should be on a particular play and how the defense will react to movements on the court. Interesting to note also, these guys have all won at various stages of their careers in ncaa or nba finals. wonder why that is? :)

Apr.16 at 9:42 am

People's Princess says:
Chuck Hayes too

Apr.16 at 9:45 am

Rasheedionics says:
oh yea.. and Rafer Alston is out for at least a week… Good trade Rockets, sending Mike James and Bonzi Wells for Bobby Jackson. It’s really going to pay off now…

Apr.16 at 9:45 am

Logan says:
Kobe as a coach would be hell…he would demand perfection from everyone…i heard/read somewhere that he has a map in his head of his FG% on any spot on the floor….makes it easier to hit those clutch jumpers i guess…so when we are talking about that kind of dedication, may rub most people the wrong way……

Apr.16 at 9:47 am

hursty says:
steve is out for the year with ankle(?) surgery i think. If the rockets let up they’ll be out. But scola will do ok. tmac is motivated (as always in the 1st round), Bobby is a veteran who knows how to win. Mutumbo has only played for 20 years Battier is a winner, skip will want to prove his game against Williams (hopefully he plays within the team game). Landry just needs to stay healthy and scrap for the 2nd chance points off broken play. I believe they can win, but they need all guns blazing from the opening tip.

Apr.16 at 9:48 am

Logan says:
also, i think the more apt title to this piece would be ‘T-Mac Not so Willing to Accept the Blame This Time’

Apr.16 at 9:49 am

hursty says:
no doubt. Thats one of the reasons Jordan would never make a good coach, but as a GM (hello BET) he might be ok. His demand for ‘greatness’ as Doug Collins loves to say would kill guys eg. Kwame.

Apr.16 at 9:50 am

Logan says:
yeah they need to really come together. its tough because they don’t have an imposing leader on their squad…..should be a good 40 days….

Apr.16 at 9:50 am

H to the izzo says:
No superstar will ever be a great coach.Would Jordan/Kobe/LeBron/ be good coaches? No.This is not a coincidence.

Larry Bird wasn’t horrible as a coach.

Apr.16 at 9:53 am

Logan says:
all right, i’m off….need to get some running in! so cant wait for the Post Up…..great games coming up tonight - Detroit Cleveland, NO Dallas, Utah San Antonio and kind of eager to see the youngsters of Portland play spoilsport to the Suns

Apr.16 at 9:54 am

hursty says:
yeh, just Guys like Kerr, Paxson etc. make great GMs because they never had the great athletics and skill set (although they were great players) but they have the heads to analyse things from the star view and the 12th man because theyve played with both types of player, and their ‘middle of the pack’ status as players (imo) allow them to see with more empathy and feel out team chemistry. just my opinion but the book ‘The Franchise’ talks about it extensively with Paxson and the Cavs, and that where a lot of my statements on this come from-because its true.

2=> The legendary Bill Russell was hired as the head coach in the following year, and in 1975 he coached the SuperSonics to the playoffs for the first time.

hursty says:
@gerard-way too much spirit
izzo, bryan- wow. never knew that. Still he had a great team though didnt he? (good anyways) I could coach the pistons and theyd still win 55 games or whatever though.

Apr.16 at 10:18 am

BETCATS says:
TMAC’s next shoes should be oragami inspired, after the way he folds. I understand that basketball is a team game, and their are more people on the Rockets than 1ne Tracy McGrady, but if you are the star shouldnt you be the most responsible if you take the most shots and are basically in charge of the offense? This is not a good move unless you want to get a little more sleep at night after another first round exit. I had hopes for the Rockets but TMAC seems to be foreshadowing another post season collapse well done.

Apr.16 at 10:20 am

thanks matt. It’ll be good ‘talking’ with you during the playoffs.

We do not need anymore Jordan-inspired draft choices (Kwame Brown, Brandon Wright, Adam Morrison) walking around in organe (unless it is Phoneix Suns or Golden State Warrior Orange)

Apr.16 at 10:22 am

hursty says:
@ bets first sentence-fu(k you. :)

Apr.16 at 10:28 am

BETCATS says:
Adam can still be good, just as the equalevant of a Pinch Hitter. A 6th Man who plays 20-30 minutes a night and will give you 10-15 points 2-3 assist. Thats all i see because of his diabetes, he will be no ‘Next Larry Bird’ but may be ‘Next Matt Carrol’. Too bad the Bobcats have the ‘First Matt Carrol’ on their team or else we could have used him.

Apr.16 at 10:28 am

Kevin says:
mcgrady needs to average about 40 a game, and alston/head/scola/landry/battier all have to play to their standard for the rockets to have a shot at winning this series..

Yeah Holly, the refs do not respect the Bobcats. Did this happen to the raptors or hornets in their first years, or is their no hope until we win a ring?

Apr.16 at 10:33 am

hursty says:
thought youd like that bet ;)
Jordan did get Wallace in a trade/freeagency), picked the best big guy available in Emeka (so did Dumars wih Darko), got an ok point and gave the go ahead to JRich.

Apr.16 at 10:35 am

MK Petrik says:
If T-Mac stayed in Toronto and didn’t jump ship to Orlando and played alongside Carter, both of those guys would have battled for multiple Eastern Conference titles and maybe even have experience playing in the Finals once or twice.

keep on dreaming MK. that wouldve been awesome. Never a chance though. Tmac could see the raptors ‘going in another direction’. so could everyone else. Vince was the scorer and better all round player at that stage, he was older, physically stronger and better in general. Not anymore though.

Apr.16 at 10:41 am

BETCATS says:
“hursty says:
thought youd like that bet
Jordan did get Wallace in a trade/freeagency), picked the best big guy available in Emeka (so did Dumars wih Darko), got an ok point and gave the go ahead to JRich.” Hursty you bufoon, Wallace was picked by Bernie Bickerstaff (bring back Bernie!!!) in the expansion draft, as Emeka was drafted by him 2nd overall and Emeka is a great defended but never became the franchies player we wanted, and the J-Rich thing is the only GOOD thing Jordan has done so far. He did influence the choice of Adam Morrison, time will tell if that was a good move or not.

Apr.16 at 10:42 am

hursty says:
that was bad BET.

Apr.16 at 10:44 am

Apr.16 at 10:44 am

no, hursty Morrison had a bad rookie year, but that does not make him a bad player.

Apr.16 at 10:47 am

BETCATS says:
No, i just hate Sam Vincent and some of the choices Jordan makes. I loved Berine Bickerstaff and i think he should be the coach of the Cats. Rod Higgins is also ok. Just some idiots (like you, but with power) mess up teams, and since i am the only Bobcats fan / part time Knicks fan (when they arent playing the Bobcats they should win) words like Coach and GM are not good words to me.

Apr.16 at 10:47 am

Houston is my team, but they don’t match up well against Utah, and they can’t beat them in Utah. If they have homecourt, they will win in 7 this year. If everyone plays there game and Tracy shoots it over .500 they are virtually unbeatable. They have only lost 2 or 3 games all season Tracy shoots it at that percentage.

Apr.16 at 10:53 am

dude, i could so take a line out of superbad right now….

Apr.16 at 11:39 am

RV says:
Logan, Battier, during the 22 game win streak, stepped it up offensively, he brought out a hook shot that was crazy effective, and he was driving more and getting to the FT line

Apr.16 at 11:42 am

RV says:
i think it should be pointed out “boozer will get his 20 and 10″, but last yr it was 30 and 15, so even him getting 20 and 10 every game is an improvement for houston, Okur, i think won’t kill us as much since we can insert 4’s at the 5 to play him and they won’t be reluctant to step out on him like Yao was.

Apr.16 at 11:43 am

hursty says:
$$ RV

Apr.16 at 11:45 am

hursty says:
RV, if that gets matched up with scola at 5 and Landry at 4 we defend both inside and outside and run them outta the gym. The all hustle team.

Apr.16 at 11:45 am

RV says:
Rasheed: that trade payed off completely for both houston and the hornets, Bonzi wouldn’t have had 10+ shots withg this offense, and mike james would still be on the bench (just like he is in NO), we gave up a back up PG and got back a back up PG, had that trade not gone down we’d be in the same situation at PG, but at least bobby has had minutes and practice.

Apr.16 at 11:52 am

RV says:
Kevin: You’re thinking of last year’s team, this yr tmac hasn’t, and won’t, need to score 40 plus, and those guys’ standards have been raised this yr. Tmac just needs to shoot a good percentage, period, just like Rafer has to. If they’re hitting a high percentage, whether its 3 of 4 or 10 of 15, either way it opens up the offense for the team and everyone else fills in nicely.

Apr.16 at 11:53 am

RV says:
oh and wasn’t Russell player/coach at some point as well?

Apr.16 at 11:54 am

hursty says:
just wait and see RV, hope we go to the 2nd round, otherwise I see one more season together for Landry, Brooks, Scola and then they break it up for a star forward. I hope not since i love THIS team but its a definite possbility.

Apr.16 at 11:56 am

hursty says:
RV,apparently hes done it all so why the fu(k not try it at least?

Apr.16 at 12:00 pm

RV says:
oh forgot about Tmac, F*CK HIM, because i’m tired of him flip flopping like that, he shot horribly at time last yr and early this year, and then all of a sudden says “oh i just needed some extra warm up shots prior to games to get going earlier” and he goes on a hot streak, acting like its all fixed, now his shoulder is acting up and he’s blaming it on the pain killer, says after the pain killer it takes him a while to get going, but after that he’s good, well then take the pain killer earlier, Einstein, or shoot even more during warm ups……..all he needs to do is drive, period. Good things happen 90% of the time when he drives, just drive and try to shove it down their throats, he’ll get freebies over half the time, at least. Then hit your f*cken free throws instead of going 6 of 10 like you have throughout the season. Tmac doesn’t need to carry the rockets, he right about that, but he needs to play his ROLE, thats opening up the offense for the team early on, then stepping up when he has to (freebies)….and don’t cry this time unless your shoulder is falling off…

Apr.16 at 12:02 pm

Gerard Himself says:
hursty, I agree on what you said about Deke. And that’s what I originally meant: whatever goes wrong in the playoffs (and it will be a lot) don’t blame it on him! Despite his age, the man is doing what he can.

Apr.16 at 12:07 pm

hursty says:
true to both comments.

Apr.16 at 12:08 pm

RV says:
i dont think this team will break up, even with tmac’s lack of fire at times, this team could have done big things this yr with Yao, the last few yrs are disappointing, but no way do we have this roster with some of those failures, with Steve coming back next yr, novak improving nicely, and Yao back, we’ll have a really deep team next yr. i think we have a good window opening up soon (even if for a short time), with guys like Kidd/nash/Shaq/TD, among others, aging, but even with them still playing we should have good opportunities, just gotta stay healthy..

Apr.16 at 12:11 pm

Cub Buenning says:
I covered this story for my Bottled Rocket piece on Mac.
Then he HAD help, now has very little

Apr.16 at 12:15 pm

RV says:
he’s got more help now, last year it was just more consistent, you knew you’d get 20 and 10 from Yao for sure, now u don’t know for sure what you’ll get, but there’s more possibilities now

Apr.16 at 1:03 pm

Russ Bengtson says:
You’re actually counting on Steve Francis for something??

Apr.16 at 1:04 pm

underdog says:
Who needs Yao when you got Dikembe?

Apr.16 at 1:12 pm

albie1kenobi says:
i’ve been rooting for houston for a while now, but while all these optimistic discussion are nice, i’d also like to ask, where are the points going to come from? team contributions are nice, but they will be outmatched in every position regardless of who they play, especially at the 4 and 5.

Apr.16 at 1:26 pm

Kevin Wilson says:
It is on T-Mac’s shoulders, but I think he realizes it’s a little too much to lift.

Apr.16 at 1:43 pm

Paniscus says:
The dude should take a pay cut if it’s really about everyone equally.

Apr.16 at 1:45 pm

RV says:
Russ, healthy, he’s got to be good for layups, if anything…the Rockets have been getting out on the break more and Steve can still shoot free throws or finish.

Apr.16 at 1:51 pm

RV says:
albie, i’m not really optimistic, but just pointing out the difference in last year’s matchup with the Jazz and this year, there is more than one way to lose afterall…BUT, they CAN be that old man team at the Y that everyone laughs at, then they go out and shut you down with just smart defense and move the ball well enough to get high percentage shots. no flash, no high flyers, just smart basketball…but with Rafer out and tmac hurtin/bitchin, its gonna be tough for them to become that consistently enough to win a round.

Apr.16 at 1:52 pm

RV says:
Also, i’m surprised no one is talking about the Spurs-Utah game tonight, I believe the loser plays Houston, the winner plays phoenix, while its important to get as many Ws as possible in the tight west, possibly tanking the game may not be a bad thing for either team.

Apr.16 at 3:03 pm

albie1kenobi says:
interesting thought on spurs/jazz. here’s to hoping spurs lose then. i don’t want either suns or spurs out in the first round (not that i can be sure suns will get past jazz, they ARE built for post season.)

Apr.16 at 3:59 pm

AC says:
In short… TMac… don’t care. Wish Yao was still balling tho. Scola rocks and skip is redeaming himself this year and who can hate on Battier? Still, I don’t like Houston’s chances… nope… not at all.

Apr.16 at 6:02 pm

The Promise says:
yeah me neither AC the Jazz will romp them good without Yao…this is when you are gonna see the effects of not having him…Carlos Boozer will have a field day with their undersized big men besides Mutumbo…and hes a little crusty u know… I got the jazz in 6

Apr.16 at 6:24 pm

Tim Duncan says:
I like the Jazz in 5 or 6 too. They have too many weapons. Boozer is gonna take in inside and kick it out to Memo and Harpring all day. I could see DWill averaging JKidd numbers in this series…

Apr.16 at 6:25 pm

Tim Duncan says:
Take it* inside.

Apr.16 at 7:04 pm

Zee! says:
The way things are going, it looks like T-Mac will never see the second round. EVER.

Apr.16 at 8:33 pm

RV says:
i dont understand why everyone thinks Boozer will have a better series now against “undersized PFs” than last yr when Yao was playing….Boozer IS an undersized power forwrd, he can shoot over someone taller or shorter than him, but against taller players he can also drive easily, which may not be as easy with smaller guys, so its not a clear cut advantage against Hayes, scola, or Landry…..he’ll still get his numbers, but its not like he’s playing against novak..

Apr.16 at 8:56 pm

Jason says:
I’m a fan of T-Mac and hope he gets out the first round someday…but he ain’t going nowhere against the Jazz in the first round. LMAO!

Apr.16 at 9:30 pm

The Promise says:
what are you sayin RV,that Houston will win? if thats what u mean u out ur mind

Apr.16 at 9:35 pm

Ethan says:
Well, If I was T-Mac i would say the same thing but it dont matter that he trying to deflect the bullets beiong fired at him cause he’s never won a playoff series, but he cant lay this one on Chuch Hayes,Mutumbo, skip 2 my lou or any of them cats that play houston

Apr.16 at 10:27 pm

RV says:
The Promise: I’m saying what i wrote in that post and the posts prior to that

Apr.17 at 12:04 am
