Will Miami Give Marion His Extension?

by Marcel Mutoni

His former team is getting ready to compete for that ever-elusive championship. His current team has one game remaining in the worst year since the franchise’s expansion season. And Shawn Marion, would like to stick around for the long haul.

It has been confirmed that The Matrix wants a contract extension from the Heat, but getting it will not be a simple matter.

Speaking about his future for the first time, Marion confirmed our earlier report that he ‘’definitely'’ would like a contract extension and will have agent Dan Fegan ask the Heat for one this summer — even though Miami’s seemingly in no position to do that because it wants big salary-cap space in 2009.

“I’ve been in the league so long now and I just need that security. Everybody wants that.'’

The issue at hand is that the Heat will likely ask Shawn and his agent to take a significant pay cut, and we all know how that will be received.

Marion’s current deal - which he can opt out of this summer - pays him a little over $17 mil, but no one seriously expects him to get that kind of money on the open market. In other words, he’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Karma anyone?

i was waiting for Eboy to make the first comment, it’s only right.
he’ll play the role of trade bait next year as Eboy pointed out throughout the season (post-trade). because if it doesn’t boost the team, he’ll be the all important salary cap relieve right after.

Ironically, he would have been worth far more to an up-and-down team like the Suns than he ever would be to a team like the Heat that…what is it that the Heat do again? The max days are over, Shawn.

Russ Bengtson says:
And how do you “need security” when you’re coming off a max deal anyway? Who is this guy, Monty Brewster?

Logan Light says:
In a perfect world the Matrix would secure himself as a bonafide star and good guy by agreeing to a pay cut in order to win a championship. Unfortunately, we all know that he’s just about the money…

Man. Shawn better not opt out this summer. That’d just be stupid. Miami won’t sign him to a huge contract. In fact, with Walsh in, I’d even be surprised if New York would sign him to a huge contract, which is saying something.

Russ Bengtson says:
I can’t help but think that his value would have been higher had the Suns running game fallen apart once he left town. It didn’t, so it isn’t. He’s just not a first-option kind of guy. He may not even be a second-option kind of guy, not on a championship contender. He’s better than the midlevel, but I don’t see him being worth much more than $10m a year.

I agree… and Marion, with all his crazy respect and money fits… is still a(potentially very good) role player. Lightening twitch legs and all.

if he can swallow his ego and prepare to be at best the 3rd gun portland may be a potential destination for him in free agency 2009, after all they could use a SF/PF

Much depends on D-Wade’s health. 17m is a chuck o’ dough for a Matrix.

I find this man to be quite strange.
Traded from a contender to a doormat with a coach who quits on his team in a heartbeat and says he’s happy.

The only time Marion should have opened his mouth in the last two years was to thank Nash for all the great passes. He could help any team if he cools his ego but no contender is going to pay him more than 10mil.

why would you resign with a team that has 2 good players and hes one of them…the rest of them either flat out suck or they are washed up has-beens… its a really big mess and im not so sure pat riley will be the one that gets them out of it…it will take at least 1 more full season and another draft till they start straigtenin things out…if they do get the number one pick and they do draft beasley, you may see them as a 7 or 8 seed possibly…but they wont have a chance against the top teams like detroit and boston…they have to start getting rid of their leftovers from their championship year, besides Wade of course…its definitely fixable, but it wont be any time in the very near future…

Tim Duncan says:
If I was in Miami’s spot, I would get rid of him, and put that cash towards Baron Davis. With Davis, Wade and Beasley, I think they could make a splash in the east. They need a big though… Maybe they could trade Marion for Kaman? LOL

is marion the new sprewell? security? really? you’ve been paid a zillion dollars for the past 5 years. i think there should be a new rule - after you come off your max dollar contract, you can only earn tops $5m a year.

Raptors could use him.

Marion…if you want, your more than welcome to come back to Phoenix …for a midlevel contract of course. It’s a shame, because shawn was my 2nd favourite player on the suns roster - I just don’t get it….

Russ Bengtson says:
Trade him (and a re-signed Jason Williams) to GSW for a re-signed Baron and Al Harrington? The Warriors obviously have to find more minutes for Monta, and Jack is allegedly the team leader. I also feel like Baron is going to just fall apart one of these days, kind of like the Bluesmobile. Plus Marion absolutely needs to be in an uptempo system.

Ethan says:
Well, even if Miami gives him an extension, he aint gonna take why would he? I mean it would be great playin with Dwade, but D wade will be in a Bulls uniform in 09-10 so i wouldnt stay anyway cause it wont be fun playin forward with Beasley cause he’ll be scoring all the time so…anyways GO LAKERS

Mark Z says:
Do the Matrix & Larry Hughes have the same knucklehead agent running the show? Someone should explain the simple facts of commerce to them. They play professional sports, where winning is ALL. W’s bring in more ticket buyers, tv money, merch, corporate sponsors, etc, etc, etc. More wins means the franchise has more money to spend. Less wins = less money. The exception to that is the one bankable, marketable star like DWade (v.1.0) or A.I. People will pay to see them play no matter what.

Sign Marion, Ben Gordon, Okefor, Luol Deng, Larry Hughes, Raef LaFretz, Marcus Banks, Jerome James, Darko and Shawn Bradley. Uber squad.
