Jeff Van Gundy takes shots at his mentor
This is quite the family drama playing out in the public eye. Pat Riley raised the Van Gundy boys as his own, at least in their professional development. One became a playoff time blood rival in the days when the Knicks were more likely to punch you in the face than be a punch line. The other stepped in on one of Pat’s patented hiatuses, and felt the ax swing, the knife in the back, all of that.
Today’s story is that Jeff believes the Miami Heat may not have been giving 110% this season.
“They haven’t been putting a product on the floor that’s representative of NBA basketball, whether it’s true injuries or trying to manipulate their chances in the lottery. They should have been in the 40s [in victories], so I’m not going to give them credit for some turnaround next year if they try real hard and win because they didn’t do that since Christmas this year.'’Van Gundy said ‘’there’s no way, if Pat Riley is your coach and Dwyane Wade'’ is available for 51 games that a team should be this bad “if you’re trying real, real hard. That’s impossible.'’
And so, the playoff trash talk begins, as one announcer trashes the worst team in the league.

hursty, I’ve only been saying the Heat have been tanking since the Zo injury, so nobody can tell me sh*t on this subject. The season’s over now. He should have said this back in February if he wanted to seem prophetic.

I find it hard to believe that any self respecting athlete would play poorly on purpose in order to get a high draft pick the next year. Not to say that a coach isn’t above that.

jeff van gundy is just mad that he could never make it as a coach after he left the knicks. pat riley is one of the best coaches in history, but when you have injury problems and an overrated player in dwyane wade, ur bound to lose, no matter what. wade is not as great as anyone makes him sound. jeff van gundy = fugayze

anyone that thinks the heat weren’t tanking is delusional. you don’t think houston coulda started tanking this year once yao went and t-mac was left with those blu collar guys? or even sacramento, knowing they have no shot? houston pulls off 22 straight and will lose in the 1st round cuz they’re the weakest of the top 9 teams, and sacramento hurts their lottery chances. i won’t say the heat coulda won 40 games, but FIFTEEN f’n games!? FIFTEEN?! the clippers, decimated by injuries won 23. seattle won 20, memphis, minnesota, and the knicks all won at least 22. FIFTEEN games is embarassing, either as a tank job or simply the guys not wanting to compete.

cheryl i’m pretty much saying van gundy’s right in that miami did a pathetic job this year. they didn’t play hard, or with heart, or even for the purpose of winning. i dunno how that’s arguable, and while they shouldn’t win 40 games, they shouldn’t win 15 either. i like that van gundy as an announcer actually calls out guys for tanking. others will talk about how doc rivers endured such a tough season last year and has experienced a magical turnaround this year, when we all know they were tanking like crazy last year and miraculously lucked out w/ kg. last year wasn’t tough for him cuz they were TRYING to lose and ainge had his back. the heat aren’t trying to win either, so let’s call out teams that do this instead of celebrating their turnaround next season.

Riles isn’t patient enough to deal with things when they’re going right or when they’re going wrong. He chased SVG out of town when the Heat started clicking. Then he started messing up the team this offseaon. Rushing DWade back from injury, letting Posey walk, trading a mildly useful Walker for a useless Ricky D & Blount, fighting w/ Shaq. Finally the trade for Marion, which could have worked out great if the Matrix wasn’t a headcase sitting on an expiring deal.
