Devin Ebanks Jordan Brand Classic Diary
Devin Ebanks is back home in the NYC and getting ready for his first Garden appearance.
Last year we set the internet on fire with our Jordan Brand Classic game week diary, which was delivered by Patrick Patterson, who spent the week debating what college to attend. We’re going in a similar direction this year, as Indiana signee Devin Ebanks, who is now free to go somewhere else after Kelvin Sampson was let go, prepares to make his own decision. We featured Devin in the Punks section of SLAM two issues ago, but Devin has a lot more to say. Read below and then check back tomorrow and Friday for more from the young man, and be sure to watch or attend the game, which you can learn more about at JordanBrandClassic.com
As told to Konate Primus
Wassup Slam, this is my first blog with you guys and some of you may not know me very well so I’m going to change that right now. My name is Devin Ebanks and I’m from LIC Queens, NY. I’m a senior at St. Thomas More School in Oakdale, CT but I’m in NYC for the Jordan Brand Classic All-star game at MSG. How big is that? I get to play in the garden; I always wanted to play at the garden. My favorite player is John Starks… yes I said John Starks, he’s the reason my favorite number is 3 and I don’t care if he went 2 for 18 in game 7 he’s still my favorite. Anyway, right now and my future is looking real bright, but before I talk about the future I want to take a look back on some special high school moments.
High school was great; I’m averaging a 3.2 GPA. I got to play under coach Jere Quinn who was good to me. I accomplished a few things in the 2 yrs I was at STM. I was able to score 1000 points in the 2y rs I was there. I don’t know about you but that’s pretty big too me. I don’t know if that’s a school record, we might have to check on that. I lead my team to the final four, and St.Thomas More hasn’t been there in 4 or 5 years. Overall it was a fun experience at the end of this season I was averaging 23 pt, 10 RPG and 5 assist. But there was one game that I remember, I think it was the last game of the season and we needed that 3rd seed spot, basically I had to take over in the second half and I ended up with 44 pts 15 rebound 6 assist and 3 blocks that’s was against South Kent. I’ll always remember that game.
People always ask me what position I play but I don’t really put myself in a box. I’m 6-8 and 185 pounds. So usually when people ask me that I just say I’m a basketball player. You can put me at any position and I’ll do whatever you need me to do at any position 1-5. That’s just my game, I’m very versatile. Playing team ball and when I need to take over I know when to take over.
Now for my college plans…I’ tell you all about that tomorrow but for now have 2 run, I’ve been traveling all day. I need some food in my system but I promise I let ya’ll know what’s up with the college situation tomorrow.
Peace

As far as I know, Kentucky is not recruiting him, so that may temper the comments somewhat. Anyway, big thanks to Devin and Konate for making this happen.

Devin, with you and Tyreke running the dribble-drive offense under Calipari, with Antonio Anderson and the rest of the team coming back, I believe Memphis could possibly go undefeated, you would be like Tracy McGrady in this offense, that basically devasted opponents in the NCAA tournament.

Devin can hit foul shots so he wouldn’t fit in with Memphis. Devin next year will be part of the Final Four run with West Virginia University. WVU returns most of their team with Devin added to the starting 5 WVU will be dominant in the Big East not some Conference USA which plays against glorified high school teams. Ebanks had a great trip to Morgantown already and be in the blue and gold next season.

Ryan Jones says:
Oh, Ben, you know this is in my wheelhouse. This can’t possibly be as much fun as last year, ’cause those UK fans were on another level. Plus, it’s still early — we haven’t even hit 800 comments yet. Still, I will do my best…
Early on, the IU fans seem to be running things. If I hate too hard, I’ll be accused of bias ’cause of my connections to a rival Big Ten school. But then again, f*ck that, I don’t think my school fields a basketball team anyway. Hoosiers it is!
I think I actually agree with all the IU fans here that Bloomington will be the best fit for Devin. After all, he’s most likely a one-and-done college player, and lately, Indiana averages a coach a year. Or less…

Joe: “You come to RU its your house, any other program it will never be that way.” Your ability to overcome your fan loyalty and offer an objective take on Devin’s situation is encouraging — er, sorry, I meant the opposite of what I just said. Do you guys still have the coach who makes players run naked sprints? That dude was AWESOME.
Also, we’re totally stealing your football coach in another year or two. Sorry in advance.
Apr.17 at 11:11 am
Ryan Jones says:
bealegend: By implying the Big Ten Network is a good thing, you’ve implicated yourself as either A) a Big Ten Network employee or B) a remarkable idiot. Maybe both. I live in a Big Ten town and work at a Big Ten school I can’t even get that non-entity of a network. Truly, you are the Dave Revsine of commenters.
And to you and all your fellow Crimson & Creamers — whose love for and devotion to your ninth coach in the past three months is admirable, as well as you all must feel you know him — all this talk of unsurpassed national exposure and “the most respected program” is based on what, exactly? Do you guys think you’re UNC? Or UCLA? Or Duke? Or Kansas? You do realize you finished third in what was maybe the fifth best conference in the country this year, don’t you? Also, you lost to Penn State. In BASKETBALL. Not the mark of greatness, friends.
Apr.17 at 11:11 am
Hoosier Dan Long says:
Devin, You once chose IU so why not again. Nothing changes but the coach and Crean is better than Sampson. Just ask D-Wade. Look at Eric Gordon and his immediate impact. You can do the same. Big Ten TV, History of 5 titles, better competition and you will be the man. What situation could be better than that? Go IU!!!!!!!!

Ummmm Ryan….do know anything about Coach Huggs and what he did at Cincy and K State before he came here? Did you know that WVU beat top-talent wannabes Arizona and Duke in the NCAA Tournament? Have you heard of Joe Alexander’s medioric rise to top NBA Prospect in 1 year’s time? I don’t know you or where you live but you seem very eager to SLAM us Mounties for no apparent reason. Let me tell you something Ebanks had an awesome time last weekend living the High (St.) life. Honestly what would Memphis have to offer outside the court? WVU players play like a team and hang out off the court as a team. One last thing Ryan you ever heard of Pat White, Steve Slaton, and Noel Devine? That would be Devin Ebanks when he comes here. He would be worshipped in the same way Joe Alexander is now. Ebanks to Dub V. I gurantee it! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MOUNTAINERS!

RU is not looking to just make the NCAA tournament. WE are looking at winning the entire thing. RU football has been special around this area and its still in the building stages. IF you come to RU the NJ/NY area will explode just like the giants did this year. Everything is here and its far enough (time by car) to say your away from home. But close enough for a train ride. Everybody needs a family when going away, and you will not get a closer family at RU. You will be a top 10 NBA pick at RU.

I never post on these things but I think coming to Rutgers would absolutely be huge for you. Just look at how New york lit up for the football team. There is a season ticket waiting list for the first time. The excitement you would create by coming to Rutgers would be far better than your experience anywhere else where you may end up being just another basketball player. This is your chance to make history. Cometo RU you will not regret it

Please Devin come to Indiana. Coach Crean is a much better coach than Sampson. You will excel in his offense and be a star at IU from day 1. Your family and friends can watch every IU game on (CBS,ABC,ESPN,BTN).
You have visited and know for yourself that there is no place like Indiana.

I’ve had season tickets for 8 years now and I think you would really help turn us around. You would be very coveted by myself and the rest of the RU faithful but I wish you the best no matter where your heart may lead!

I believe that your decision would stand as a beacon to many NJ players for the future and would place you in a legendary status of a local hero / phenom who didn’t look elsewhere to find greatness. Devin, remember when RU football took off and the Empire State Building was lit up in Scarlet? RU basketball is set to take off, and if you come here, you will be part of something just like that. The RU basketball turnaround will be the biggest story in college sports and you will be such a major, major part of that. You will make history, and you will become a legend at RU. That can’t happen anywhere else. Tyreke Evans is talented, but lets be real - do you really want to play alongside a ballhog like him? Mike Rosario (and Corey Chandler) are much better teammates, and you’ll get a real chance to shine. Your friends and family will easily be able to come see you play, you’ll have the NY/NJ media (the major media market in the world) watching your every move, and you will make history. You’ve visited RU many times, and you know you like it there. It’s where your mom and dad wants you to be, and of course Coach Carter is there. You’ll make history, and you won’t regret it. Come to RU.

Come to MEMPHIS where you can be groomed for the NBA. With Rose, Dorsey, Allen, & CDR leaving you’d get plenty of playing time. We at Memphis are lucky to have Coach Cal for he really cares for his players and the community. He meets with the Tiger fans & does a radio show every Monday night during basketball season. Also the players of Memphis are very unselfish working together to win. Why not go where you can take a step to the next level!

who is this ryan jones says:
let me help you out ryan.. to get the big ten network all you need is A) a direct TV package and B) affiliation with a big ten school worth watching… its interesting though, for someone who cant get that “non-entity” you actually made a reference connecting the person who posted to an analyst on the network if im not mistaken.. hmm you also said we had 9 coaches in 3 months? which clearly you are just over exaggerating, but our track record isnt as bad as it seems. we gave davis 6 years but he just wasnt the right fit. Then we had sampson for about 1.6 years, who I believe could have finished his career at IU if he could win without breaking the rules. And now we have Crean who I believe is contracted for 8 years, but should last much longer.. and i know i didnt include dakich, but getting sampson out was the best thing for IU, even if it costs us a 5 star recruit.. one last part of your post:
“all this talk of unsurpassed national exposure and “the most respected program” is based on what, exactly? Do you guys think you’re UNC? Or UCLA? Or Duke? Or Kansas? ” im sure you read more of the posts than I, but in the one i believe you were replying to he was actually talking about the national exposure IU will get compared to Memphis, using the example that the Big Ten has its own network and conf-USA is a joke. now i dont really think he is correct and I believe memphis will get just as much if not more exposure but your still talking out your ass and using some very creative reading techniques. i mean you actually took a statement about the big ten network and turned it into some type of “who do you think you are” rant comparing IU to UNC, UCLA, DUKE, and KANSAS…? haha where did that come from?? and to answer it, yes… i believe two of our national banners actually came from beating kansas.. so im not really sure what your driving at by listing 4 good programs.. but you get an A for effort from me.. I look forward to reading more of your accurate and well written posts.

Devin, Rutgers needs you. Why not come to a school where you will be the most appreciated player in school history? At these other schools you will have great opportunities as well, but none of them will put you on the map like Rutgers can. You can be the final piece of a recruiting class that will put Rutgers right back into the mix in the Big East. Rutgers is located right in between the New York and Philadelphia media markets, so your exposure will be limitless. The Big East tournament is played at the Garden, so you will be guarunteed to play there every year on national television against the most powerful conference in America. Your family can attend almost every game since there are so many schools located close to Rutgers. This is your chance to put a perminent stamp on a school that you decide to go to. If you turn Rutgers around, you’ll have your jersey hanging at the RAC. You will become legendary at Rutgers. This is a stop on your way to the NBA, so why not go somewhere where you can enjoy it with your family and friends close to home where everyone will be behind you. Fred Hill is going to get it done, and with you here we will be right in the mix.

Anyway, PLEASE keep posting this drivel. Both because Devin Ebanks (who I’ve interviewed and who seems like a nice enough kid) is definitely going to make his college decision based on which collective of mouth breathers sells him most convincingly, and because we enjoy the extra traffic.

D, come on down to the river city young man. You will never find a more passionate group of fans, and you will NEVER find a city more eager to win a title. D, we love our Tigers. Sure, all fans of all schools have that love, but here in Memphis that love runs deeper and stronger than you can ever imagine. Being a Tiger means being a part of the fabric, a part of the history of this wonderful city. Tiger teams have been part of the heritage of Memphis and have seen us through tough times and bad, all the way from Larry Finch, to Penny, to the magic of Derrick Rose and CDR. There is no other place on earth where, you as a young man with enormous talent, will find more love, more caring, more support, and more passion than at the University of Memphis. We came 10 seconds from winning it all this year, and i assure you, we will be back. Be part of it D. You, Tyreke, Wesley, Matt, and Angel will be the greatest class of five we have ever seen.

Anyway, a couple follow-up questions:
-Does West Virginia actually recruit black players? Or is there at least something in the state laws (crafted by Sen. Robert Byrd, I imagine) about how the star’s always gotta be white?
-Given the diminishing durations of each IU coach since Hey Knight!, isn’t Tom Crean likely to be fired by next Tuesday?
-I hear Devin’s a really good finisher. Doesn’t that disqualify him from going to Memphis, which had no idea how to finish off Kansas?
Answers welcome!

Come get your National Championship at Memphis! You already know why the Tigers are the best option, and you know our offense spreads the ball around and is good for those who can create. You may not know how committed the Memphis fans are, but we get thousands to Madison Square Garden and we have had the majority out of ALL SCHOOLS at every NCAA site I’ve seen except when we’re in another school’s home state. For example, last year in New Orleans, we had at least 5x as many fans as the defending champion Gators. I live 450 miles from Memphis and have a limited budget, but I still make 3-5 regular season games, and usually one tournament weekend. You should see the Forum rockin’ - Memphis fans are crazy for hoops, and being on a repeat Final Four or National Champ team will make you a legend.

Devin, think about it like this. You’re going to be a star anywhere you go. No doubt about that. You’re going to be successful no matter what you do. But, if you come to Rutgers, you’re going to get an absolutely first class education, playing under one of the classiest coaches out there in Freddy Hill. You’d play in the undisputed best conference out there, the BIG EAST. Your family would be able to come to all the games.

Devin, coming to Memphis would definitely be the best fit for you. You get to play in the premier arena in the world (FedEx Forum), in front of fans who treat you like a King all over the city. You and ‘Reke in the Dribble Drive Motion offense will be unstoppable. Calipari would hone your defense and take your game to the next level. The other schools may be quality choices too, but the atmosphere in Memphis during bball season is like none other. It isn’t some small college town rallying behind their team, it is a big city rallying around their school! Bottome line: come to Memphis. Learn from the best. Become a legend. Win a championship. Nothing to say that hasn’t been said. RU has more to offer you than these other schools. You will start immediately and be the focal point of the offense. Can Memphis offer you that? You will be 45 minutes from Times Square, where your picture will be on the giant screen after every game. Can Texas give you that? You will be part of a program you can be proud of, with a coach who has morals and graduates his players. Can WVU say that about their coach? Come play with Rosario, Chandler, Coburn, and Hamady. Rutgers is very rewarding Devin … just ask me, the star of the 1976 final four team … this could be you Devin … you can be known as the legendary player that brought Rutgers back to the final four… look at the roster, the talent is there … with you it become reality… your number will be hung from the rafters! go Rutgers!

Dan says:
Yo Devin you should definetely go to Rutgers. With you, All American guard, Mike Rosario, and Corey Chandler, you guys can definetely make it to the NCAA’s and beyond. Wouldn’t it be sweeter to make the NCAA’s with a team like Rutgers then with a team like Memphis who just made it to the Finals? You’ll get drafted wherever you go because your one heck of a player but at Rutgers and only Rutgers could you build a legacy like Quincy Douby and Eddie Jordon did.

Matmun1 says:
Devin, come be a star for Rutgers in the BIG EAST, the toughest basketball conference out there! Don’t be a 6th man playing in a league that the majority of the country couldn’t name 3 teams in!

quincy douby says:
Fred Hill got made my scoring average go up from 15.1 to 25.4 in one year…. he’ll get you to the NBA like me …. got to Rutgers Devin!

I think the best uniform for you is definitely scarlet and white. You’d be a great player at other schools, but a definite legend at Rutgers!!! Go RU

Dave M. says:
Devin, you definitely come to Rutgers where we have an up and coming program that you’re able to be apart of, while your family will be close enough to see you play. Also you’ll have the opportunity to get a first class education here at RU.
Apr.18 at 6:11 pm
JG says:
Devin, Cellvin did you a favor man. Now if you come to IU, you’ll actually graduate, get better as a player, and be in position to actually win some big games. Come to IU, you already know you like the school, and be “The Man”. Or you can go to WVU with Coach Huggins and not go to class/not learn a damn thing/hang out with the ‘billies or why not go to Memphis and get a free mink coat and into a few bar brawls/learn to be a thug. Perhaps Rutgers would be a good fit…do you like shooting for the NIT year after year? Or come play under 5 banners, in front of 17,000+ every night, be on TV all the time, get all the minutes you desire, be the go to guy, and enjoy our gorgeous co-eds that will think you’re a god. Tough call.

RUbballman says:
yo devin…you gotta come to RU…i know all of the other schools you’re considering have a lot to offer and RU had a very disappointing season, but we have a very bright future and if you join the RU community that future could be very soon…you could be playing with guys like hamady n’diaye, corey chandler, mike coburn, earl pettis, mike rosario, patrick jackson, christian morris, dane miller, greg echenique, and austin johnson at RU, you will be playing in front of the media capital of the world and will get tons of coverage in your quest to become and NBA lottery pick, you will be very close to home where your parents can come see you play and you will be destroying the BE competition, you get to play in the RAC, the most intimidating place to play in the BE and possibly the entire country anyway, good luck with your decision and remember RU is where its at
Apr.18 at 9:05 pm
old school says:
Devin, at RU you become a legend - instantly. That can’t happen anywhere else. Coach Carter - and Coach Hill - will look out for you like no one else. It’s the best school academically, you’ve got the New York media, your parents can easily come to every game. You’ve got your boy Christian, Mike Rosario, Corey, Big Greg is coming in, etc, etc, etc. Plus, the school is a blast. Wait till you come for your official - it’s during RutgersFest. You’ll see! You know your heart says RU ALL THE WAY!!!
