‘Toine Is Stuck in Minny … With His Money
“I thought there would be an opportunity for me to leave,” Walker said after Monday’s practice. “But they wanted money back I wasn’t willing to give back. So it didn’t work out that way.”

I love this time of year where guys “really want to play for a contender” but won’t give up a cent for a shot at the chip.

..And that pretty much sums up the career of one Antoine Walker

Fat boy, you got a ring, keep the money, cause once you retire, Krispy Kreme franchises don’t come cheap.

I wouldn’t give up guaranteed millions either. And it’s not like he asked to be traded to Minnesota. Toine might be half the player and twice the man he used to be, but in this case I’m entirely on his side.

I wouldn’t either Russ, but he doesn’t need to be complaining.

russ, so you think it would be ok for minny to pay him to go for nothing in return for this year and next whilst he’s in a far better situation? there should be some rule in the league - if the player wants to leave a team via a buyout the most they can ask for is $0 (unless the team wants to buy them out or medical reasons, which is different). Fatboy should realise how lucky he is - i cant see how anyone can be on his side (apart from him, his agent and the union) to be totally honest

Shimmy shimmy ya, shimmy toine, shimmy yay, give him the ball and it gets taken away, devouring the donut barrage, bon voyage, rides the bench on a sorry t-wolves squad…

NBA contracts are guaranteed. The Collective Bargaining Agreement–as agreed to by the owners and the players’s union–says that. When Antoine Walker signed the contract he is currently bound by, it guaranteed him that money. He’d be an absolute fool to just give that money back. As it is, he doesn’t play in Minnesota at all. What difference does it make for the Wolves to pay out his contract now and never have him play for them again, or pay his contract as it goes and STILL never have him play for them again? The Wolves have the right to do what they did, certainly, and Antoine Walker has the right to say what he said.

Russ Bengtson says:
If they bought him out, he’d count against the cap, but it would open a roster spot for someone who might be able to help the team. And this isn’t a Vince Carter or Alonzo Mourning case where someone is simply refusing to suit up. Toine’s been a pretty good sport about the whole thing. This is more of a case where the player doesn’t want to be on the team AND the team doesn’t want the player. Where’s the problem? FREE TOINE.

but if he doesnt want to be in minnesota they shouldnt have to pay him to go, should they? it doesnt matter if its guaranteed, if he signs that contract he is contracted to play for them, if he wants to break it then so be it, but he shouldnt be paid a damn penny of what is left on that contract. personally i’d rather minny pay him but put him on the inactive list - it may send a lesson to other players who try to pull that trick.

rav says:
if the team dont want him then and he doesnt want to be there then shouldnt they have found an agreement by now? after all, if ‘toine wants to win so badly, he’ll give up a lot of money. if minny want rid so bad, they’ll be prepared to offer a lot of the money…
Mar.5 at 5:17 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
They probably will pay him and put him on the inactive list. And who does that benefit? You have a roster spot taken up by a guy that doesn’t play, and you have to pay him anyway. And if guys could break contracts by just giving up money and walking away, it would be an absolute disaster. Players and teams HAVE TO follow the tenets of the CBA, and that means guaranteed contracts and buyouts. Otherwise you’d just have chaos.
Mar.5 at 5:28 pm
rav says:
it’ll send a message if they put him on inactive - that is players can’t expect to get paid all (or nearly all) of their contract and go to a better team. And how would it be a disaster if players could break their contract and walk away - the teams would have to agree to it! in all honesty i’d be better to have players walking away from a large amount of money instead of getting paid excessive amounts (see chris webber from philly) to not play, which paints the players in a negative light

Captain America says:
‘toine, sit on the bench and shut your pie hole. He is worth more to the Wolves this summer (with a team option looming) than he is right now. So if he wanted a buyout he has no leverage.

As much as I like to abuse Antoine, this is his last big contract. I don’t blame #8 for wanting to hold onto the fat contract that Riles (stupidly) gave him.
