Lakers and Clippers Going After Gilbert This Summer?

by Marcel Mutoni

There’s a reason we have a News&Rumors column around here.

A report has come out claiming that LA’s two pro franchises are gonna make a strong push to acquire the biggest fish in the free agent pool this summer: Gilbert Arenas.

They value (Caron) Butler and Antawn Jamison at least as much, probably more at this point,” the source said. “They want to build the team around them.” .

The source added, “That doesn’t mean the Wizards will let Arenas walk for nothing. But if the Lakers and Clippers push for him as much as expected, it’s likely to result in a sign-and-trade.”

Phil Jackson is undoubtedly a brilliant coach, and has made a career out of corralling massive egos and getting them to work (and win big) together, but dealing with a Kobe/Arenas backcourt might be asking a little too much of the Zen Master.

Should Gil decide to leave Washington after this season, the Clip Show would be a pretty ideal situation for him. He’s an LA guy after all, and if anyone was born to play in Hollywood, it’s Arenas.

A kobe-gilbert backcourt would be awesome!

Personally, I’d hate to see Shaun Livingston’s development (injuries permitting) hampered by this ego-maniac.

Squirrel7 says:
And as well as being the most exciting season in recent memory, I think it’s also highlighted how overrated some players are. Supposedly Arenas and Yao are franchise players, but their teams have proved they can cope just fine without them (it was only once Caron went down that the Wiz were in trouble).

Would Gil and Kobe pass each other the ball?

Get Gilbert and trade for ron ron.

Should either stay with Wasington or go with the Clippers, Lakers dont need him all they need is Bynum to be healthy. I dont think Gilbert would be as good anymore.

there not be much passing, but there will definitely be great blog material.

Gilbert Arenas - a slightly better steve francis.

ciolkstar says:
Really? If I were Arena I’d only consider the paper clips IF they resign Elton Brand… The Wiz can definitely spend the money Gilbert wants in a more efficient way (resign Nick Young, Andray Blatche, Caron + Antawn, …)
Didnt Arenas say he wanted to play for a conyender if he leaves?

Mar.19 at 12:41 pm

Andy says:
I think to say Yao is overrated is a little unfair. He was having a very good season before the injury. Hell, I don’t even think Gil is overrated (except by himself). It’s just that he’s not a point guard. If he played the 2, I think his place in the L would be just about right.

Mar.19 at 12:45 pm

Squirrel7 says:
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying either of them aren’t any good, but if I was a GM, I wouldn’t be giving Gilbert max money at all. Yao, for all his plus points, is still soft, injury-prone, and really not as dominant as a guy his size should be.

Mar.19 at 12:47 pm

Andy says:
I agree totally on Gil. He’s not a max player (I’m not going to start that whole “what makes a max player in the L” argument again). And, yes, Yao is still soft. But, hell, this isn’t the 90s any more. Most of the players in the NBA today are too soft.

Mar.19 at 12:48 pm

Jolst says:
Why the hell should the Lakers want Arenas? They got plenty of quality shooting guards and Arenas is obviously not a playmaker. Just leave it Phil.

Mar.19 at 12:49 pm

Squirrel7 says:
To me, a max player makes his team-mates better (and I’m not just talking PG’s). To me, Gil is actually more of a hindrance to his team-mates development, due to his me-first attitude.

peteb80 says:
Kobe will not accept another guard/chucker on the team to steal from his spotlight. Never. And they both desperately need to take the last shot or their egos will cry.

Mar.19 at 12:51 pm

Andy says:
To me, Gil is Iverson without the sheer strength of will. Gill can’t single-handedly drag a team to the NBA Finals, the way both AI and LeBron have done.

Mar.19 at 1:07 pm

WhaHuh says:
Alot of people have forgotten Gil’s skills. The amount of snide hatred he is getting is obscene. He will come back with a point to prove.

canadian says:
Lakers need to keep clear of this. In order to stay under the cap wouldn’t the Clips need to trade away some of their already thin talent? To be competative they need everyone they have. (including a healthy Brand and Livingston)

The Biz says:
If the Lakers do get they be way over the cap but that would be a kick@ss team

If Gilbert went to the Clippers He could be the shooting guard that Livingston needs to get his swagger.

as fun as it would be to see GA sporting a laker uniform, i think the clips would definitely benefit more from his contributions.

Mar.19 at 2:20 pm

daniel says:
how in the hell would kobe and gilbert both get their shots up? and who would the wiz get for gilbert, probably lamar odom and draft picks? wow kobe, gilbert, pau, bynum walton= Larry obrien trophy. I doubt it would work though, not enough shots to go around and the lakers are fine with what they have now. If anything they need another defender.

Mar.19 at 2:26 pm

Lz - Cphfinest3 says:
Gilbert would be perfect on the Clip-show; a few scoring titles, 40 game win seasons, and a 1 round exits. His selfish azz is built for the being the man for the ever lackluster Clippers.

Ltrain3000 says:
Trade that works under salary rules Clips get:
Gilbert (Maxed) Wiz get:
Cat Mobley
Tim Thomas (Immediately cut)
Brevin Knight
LA 2008 1st round pick. This gives the Clips what they want, an immidiate shot in the arm. Here’s there lineup: Gilbert
Maggete
Ross
Brand
Kaman Thats a contender in the west, something the Clippers definitely aren’t now. The Wiz: Knight/Daniels
Mobley
Butler
Jameson
Haywood 6th Man: Nick Young
Projected draft pick (via NBADRAFT.net): Eric Gordon That’s a deep team with plenty of potential to grow. In the Wizards offense that bench will be utilized. Mobley gives you additional unselfish firepower to augment the abilities of Butler and Jameson, and you get Brevin Knight’s pure point guard ability, which I think would be another great fit for Eddie Jordan’s offense. On top of that you’re not hamstrung by Gilberts contract for years, which maybe works out maybe it doesn’t(attitude and knees being the main question marks). A year or two down the line the Wiz looks like this: Gordon
Young
Butler
Jameson
Haywood (assuming they don’t upgrade) That’s pretty nasty. I think its win win and gives both teams exactly what they want.

if im the lakers just go for it trade lamar odoms along with radmanovic and farmer even thou he is a good player you gotta give up a good player or two to get one in return that would be sweet to see gilbert and kobe on the same team or id love to see him on my home state p-town blazers wouldnt mind that at all either

The last thing the East needs is for another superstar to go West. The Lakers are already the favorites for the 2009 chip without Gil. Why f*ck up the chemistry? Doesn’t make sense.

As is the case with eboy in his personal life, the key question here how many balls are they going to play with.

Mar.19 at 5:49 pm

David says:
Maybe we should try to figure out for which team Gilbert would best play. Which team needs a shoot first combo guard right now? And it might be worth noting that he seems to have taken offense to the idea that he’s not a good passer. Maybe he needs one of the Olympic team coaches to accuse him of being terrible at passing and then he’ll drop 84 assists on Portland.

Mar.19 at 5:52 pm

Dre's on point says:
The Clippers sound like the better fit….Gil and Kobe could not coexists. I agree with canadian, the Lakers don’t need him.

Mar.19 at 6:21 pm

jeremy says:
jeez man, what do the lakers need with a guy that takes 30 shots a game?they already have that…it could work for him with the clippers thogh…they need a big time scorer so they can compete in the west…phil jackson has done lot with big egos, but that just couldnt work…

Mar.19 at 6:53 pm

Joel O's says:
Yeah no way the Lakers are really realistically going after Gilbert. Look how well they’re doing now that Kobe’s showboating ways have kind-of mellowed… no way they need a guy like Arenas. The Clippers would make sense though - that would be pretty freakin awesome actually.

Mar.19 at 7:02 pm

RV says:
Not having a good chance of getting past the first round and being a .500 team is not “coping just fine” without Yao or gil…and who exactly has set the standard of being dominant at 7′6? Muresan? Bradley? Bol?

DP says:
Kobe and Arenas equals Fight night round 5! I pick Kobe 2 win.

Mar.20 at 12:42 am

Dark says:
Gil and Kobe together is ridiculous. Gil with the Clippers, on the other hand, might be nice . . . Gil at the 2, Thornton at SF, and Elton Brand and Kaman down low. Just get a decent point (will Livingston be back?) and they could make some noise.

We need OJ Mayo AND Gilbert Arenas! Our depth at the PG position is nada. And to those who think the Lakers are going to get Arenas are just speaking without thinking, a common pattern. (XP) Sorry, just a frusturating season in clips

Laker Magic says:
All my friends around me who are also Laker fans like me have been telling me about Arenas wanting to go to the Lakers and they were excited about it. I’m not because of the things some of you pointed out here. Who needs another shooter, we have a lot of those already, and Kobe is THE MAN for the Lakers. And I know Arenas is a ball-hog. Kobe and Arenas don’t like each other, we don’t want another ala-Kobe-Shaq conflict, right? Plus what Lakers need are good defenders. Sure I think they should get rid of the likes of Mimh, Radmanovic and Walton because they’re just occupying space and Rad is the number one spaceman out there. Replace them with people who will hustle and wrestle for the ball, never give up the basket, make hard fouls so the oppossing team will remember not to drive on a Laker next time. I don’t like seeing a Laker player come down on defense on a driving Ray Allen just to stand in front of the basket and watch Ray actually make the shot without even contesting it (Radmanovic). And soft fouls like letting Leon Powe drive past you and scoring on a and-one when you could have stopped him right on his tracks and try to make him earn his points from the free-throw line (Walton). I know they said they gave it their 100%, so if they did, what more can they give us in the future? Nothing more. Then we need to find replacements that can give us more, the 2009 NBA Trophy!!! In other words, we don’t need Gilbert Arenas. We need someone else, a very good defender who is also a team player.
