It’s official: Donnie Walsh is leaving the Pacers

By Sam Rubenstein

So, Donnie Walsh truly is leaving the Pacers after 22 years of decision-making. For much of that time he was among the best GMs in the NBA. Let’s not get too caught up in the bad times. The keys to the franchise now belong to Larry Legend.

In describing his experience with Walsh, Bird said, “I couldn’t have had a better teacher and coach. He’s a basketball genius and one of the best executives in the NBA. What I’ve learned from him, combined with my own experiences, will serve the franchise well going forward.”

I know the next logical step is to assume that Donnie is coming to NY to roll up his sleeves and clean up the Knicks.

“Indianapolis is a great place and it has been a great place for my family to live. We will continue to have our family home here, no matter what my future holds. As for my future, I will look at the options and when I’m clear as to what I will do, I will make a statement.”

If those options mean going to the highest bidder, I know what’s coming.

I think David Lee would have to be the most loved Knick in recent years?

Yeaaaa boyyy, let’s go. Get Isiah the f*ck out and start cleaning house! Good draft pick, derrick rose, and we’ll be back at the top of the east in 5 years.

This is off topic, but man the nba needs a Warriors-Lakers first round series. Who needs march madness when you have great competitive ball at the highest level. If god was a Knicks fan, the Knicks would be end up with Derrcik Rose in the draft, get Elton Brand back to NY, and find a sucker to take Z-Bo, Steph and Q off their hands.

ATTN KNICK FANS: If Donnie Walsh does walk through that door, he’s going to be old and grey. And when was the last time the Pacers made the playoffs? The last quality team Donnie assembled imploded with the worst brawl in NBA history. Is that the guy you want trying to undo this mess? Your team has no foreign-born players, never drafted a high schooler, considers young players to be afterthoughts. Isn’t it time to hire a forward-thinking new kid? Why not follow the Rockets/Sonics lead and hire a young front office type from a perennial contender? Hire someone who’ll finish what they start, not a lion in winter. Hire new blood who will bring new thoughts and fresh ideas. Donnie Walsh seems like a bright sort with a good track record, but isn’t he the GM equivalent of Lenny Wilkens? A Hall of Fame worthy career with little success of late. He signed off on the Jack/Harrington for Dun/Murph trade, did he not? Is that really the guy you want running your franchise?

Hey Russ, is it possible that Donnie was just trying to get the players Larry the Legendary Ego may have said that he wanted? If so, any inequalities inherent in those deals are on Birdy’s head, not Walsh’s.

Russ Bengtson says:
Yet he has to leave and Bird gets the whole gig. If that was the case (which I doubt), it didn;t work out too well for ol’ Donnie Basketball.

daniel says:
russ, how are you going to put blame on donnie for that trade? everyone knew that those two wanted out, and we all know that drives down value. Dunleavy is coming around, only 2 guys have more 30 pt games since the break, kobe and lebron (thank you espn). walsh got the best he could in that situation. same situation with AI and andre miller, and every other person who has publicly wanted out. over the last few years, it has been bird making the decisions anyways.
