Down Goes Pau

by Marcel Mutoni

Ugh.

Can one of the most successful franchises in pro sports history be cursed? I kid, of course, but this is ridiculous: Just as the team enters this season’s most critical stretch of games, Pau Gasol goes down with an ankle injury. Great, just freaking great.

Lakers center Pau Gasol sprained his left ankle with 9 minutes 27 seconds left in the first quarter tonight against the New Orleans Hornets and will not return to the game.

Gasol was away from the ball when he was injured, but he appeared to get tangled with Hornets center Tyson Chandler while moving down the lane. X-rays were negative.

That X-rays were negative is a good thing, but it doesn’t guarantee anything. The fact remains that they’re locked in a dogfight with the Hornets tonight, and the road only gets tougher.

When is Bynum returning again?

I remember once when Garnett was stll a Timberpup and during a game he hung a mean dunk on pau like a Hawaiian lei which prompted Kevin Harlan to exclaim(in his own inimitable way),’Que pasa.mi amigo ,que pasa!’Anyhoo….

Mar.14 at 11:38 pm

RV says:
yeah but yao had 25 in that one, kobe had 45 with 27 FT attempts and Odom didn’t play, then they lost the second game to them.

Have no fear, Holly. This is just part of the plan of ensuring Kobe gets the MVP. We don’t want to hear: “Well, the Lakers wouldn’t have that record without the trade”

@lewis: Jerry West? He quit as Grizz GM in 2007.

Mar.15 at 11:54 am

jeremy says:
they cant afford for players to get hurt…this the west people!!!if you lose 2 or 3 games in a row you are in big trouble…houston has won 21 straight as of right now,and they are tied with LA for home court advantage…if LA loses to houston tomorrow they could be in a lot of trouble…who knows how long bynums gonna be out and if pau pau ends up missing 4 or 5 games they could slip 3 or 4 spots in the west…thats how good the west really is…

Mar.15 at 12:26 pm

RV says:
Reggie , you’re kidding right? Thats why I said before people are actually forgetting Yao went down.

Mar.15 at 12:26 pm

RV says:
It might be a blessing in disguise for the lakers, slipping to 3 or 4 wouldn’t be so bad if they face dallas or phoenix.

Mar.15 at 1:10 pm

Michael says:
I’m not overly worried. This 4 game trip is a bitch, but after they have by far the easiset schedule of all the playoff teams in the west. They don’t have a real tough game until their last two games of the season and by then hopefully both Pau and Bynum will be back. In the meantime Kobe is just going to have to throw a couple of 50’s up there, he gave Houston 53 twice last year so I expect more of the same tomorrow.

I hope he get’s well soon .
The playoffs wouldn’t be as good as they could be without him. A loss for all basketballfans if the best players are out in the playoffs . Hard enough that Yao (and eventually Bynum) is out.

also i have a feeling that because of the lost to the hornets (especially after regrouping from the gasol loss), the lakers will take the game from houston tomorrow.

Why hasn’t anyone noticed that the Lakers will be relying on both soft (Gasol) and unhealthy (Bynum) come playoff time? Shouldn’t that at least be noted? By the way, what happened to Kobe’s injured finger? Todd

Yes, it is really a tragedy that the ridiculously talented Lakers who will only have the best roster in the L for, like, the next half a decade lost one of their players for a few games. I feel for the Laker fans, I really do. Regards, your friendly neighborhood Knick-Man.
