Dirk Nowitzki out for 2 weeks
Bad timing for the Mavs… three losses in a row (including Sunday), the Nuggets getting their act together enough to run up the score and make up ground in the Western Conference, and now… Dirk Nowitzki goes down in a nationally televised game when the NBA is on the back burner to March Madness.
In a statement released by the team, Nowitzki said: “I fell awkwardly and my left leg got caught underneath of me. I am going to get re-evaluated in the morning and I hope to have more information then.”
Yeah, but Marc Stein of espn.com - who I believe may also be a blogger, can we get a ruling from the all-important Mark Cuban? - is saying it’s a two-week deal. Looking at the Mavs schedule, there is the big game at Denver on Thursday, but they are done playing the Eastern Conference already.
Can they top last season’s playoff choke of epic proportions with a regular season one? Stay tuned.

you hate to see this happen, even though I’m not much of a fan of the Mavs or Dirk. Anybody got any links to to any Denver forums?

someone should tell Stein that the fact that he’s had previous ankle injuries is actually a BAD thing
Mar.24 at 12:41 am
RV says:
the ankle sprain he had earlier looked really bad also, but wasn’t, but I can’t see it just being two weeks, that ankle got tweaked on the landing and again on the fall

as much as i LOVE Kidd..he is my favorite player and all but I am also a Nets fan and i gotta say it would be kind of nice to have the mavs fall out of the playoffs and the Nets sneak in in the East with the Nuggets taking the 8th spot in the West..cuz then Nets management will know they shoulda never traded Kidd..

The Mavs are the new Heat. Except they got worse proactively by making the Kidd trade.

Yeah. I didn’t think the Kidd trade would help the Mavs, and their recent play has proved it. Cuban must feel like an idiot right now. Dallas might not make the playoffs at all. Team blowup anyone?
Mar.24 at 3:19 am
hursty says:
thats bit harsh namik. this is ugly for them though. can they slip out of the playoffs now? if i remember properly they wanted shaq for a trade before he went to the heat…. but they wouldnt give up dirk.

hursty says:
now kidd has to carry more of the offensive load… 1 of 10 shooting. looks like the mvp deferring to Josh Howard might have been a good thing… what? it did look pretty nasty though. knee slipped backwards under the thigh.

Lets see how the Mavs go without Dirk. Is it just me or does the Shaq trade seem to be better then the Kidd trade so far. When the trades happened I thought it would be the other way around.

This team was in a funk before Dirk went down, so I really think they are done for the season. Maybe if Kidd can find the youth fountain and avg. 19, 13, 12 for the next 10 games then maybe they still have a shot. But I highly doubt it.

haters. lol. its two weeks wawa! how do you think that houston feels every time Yao or tmac goes down for an extended period of time?!
Mar.24 at 5:04 am
uamini says:
Seriously though, what’s better for the Mavericks, finishing in 8th place and facing a top team while their own star player is rusty…ooor missing the playoffs, thereby keeping their lottery-protected draft pick and maybe getting rid of their terrible coach in the process?
Has there ever been a worse coach with such a high winning percentage?
Mar.24 at 5:09 am
hursty says:
tom i get your point but um…. Kidd was averaging close to a triple double with the nets this year and look at what it got him. an awful losing record with a team not even going to make the playoffs in the EAST! his stats werent getting any improvement in his team in the east… his averaging less across the board in dallas. to think if he bumped up his no.s in the west would only get him losses… thats an awful thought of continuation.

avery is not a bad coach just misunderstood.
Mar.24 at 5:16 am
hursty says:
he reminds me of isiah thomas in indiana. reaching the conference finals, great success win wise and then having issues with management-Larry Legend and Mark Cuban. Some ridiculous errors eg. Malice in the Palace and the Golden State warriors.
their careers were similiar in some ways eg. point guards, both veteran leaders. cheesy smiles.

Jimmy G says:
hursty, Zeke wasn’t the coach of the Pacers at that time. Rick Carlisle was the coach during that run. Sucks to see the only good thing, besides the rise of Brandon Bass, about this season go down in a heap. Maybe this will light a fire under Josh Howard. He’s been struggling lately.
Mar.24 at 6:31 am
hursty says:
Jimmy, he was in the front office wasn’t he? funny that rick carlisle was coach of both the pacers and pistons when the ‘incident’ happened. anyways, Josh seems to be getting his touches and the ball, he’s just being i dont know…timid? Hes a michrocosm of the Mavs funk. He works-do do they.
Mar.24 at 6:32 am
hursty says:
sorry that should read had been the coach of the pistons and pacers previously. (i think)

dirk should get the same medical trainers as bynum and Pau. then everyone would be in the dark…. BOOM! he’s BACK!… to not-so-MVPlike numbers.

Sam: what has choking got to do with injuries? If they don’t make the playoffs because Dirk is out, that’s something different than losing the first round in the playoffs WTIH Dirk?
Mar.24 at 7:44 am
peteb80 says:
If the Mavs don’t make the play-offs now , then the blame should start with Avery. It was him who put them in this position with all his experimenting earlier in the year, playing Dirk in the post and with the new philosophy of “the regular season doesn’t count”. When Avery let him, Dirk contributed really well, compared to last year his averages are down by exactly one point and 0.024 in FG. The Kidd trade was absolutely useless if they don’t make the play-offs.
Mar.24 at 7:55 am
hursty says:
pete good point.of course it starts with the coach and G.M. dirk is shooting less from outside and his post game when used is not bad.

also when i said no.’s it was more that his game was different. just different. i dont think its that avery doesnt care about the reg. season, he perhaps doesnt see it as important than the shinny thin on your finger at the beginning of the next season.

h-wag says:
I watched the game yesterday and literally saw the Mavs season and Germany´s chance to go to the Olympics flushed down the toilet all in one second.
And that injury didn´t look like a two-week thing. Dirk is very lucky if it´s “just” the ankle, cause the bending of the knee looked even worse to me and you can damage so much more in your knee than in the ankle.

The Kidd trade might be one of the worst of the decade. Kidd looks downright AWFUL on the court in a Mavs uniform. Whenever he was left open yesterday, he immediately swung it to a covered teammate, and forced them to create their own shot. Isn’t he supposed to be creating shots for his teammates?

I don’t know what happened to the Mavs this year. The whole season has been a debacle. They were losing easy games early in the season, and kept saying “oh, we’ll get better.” They actually got worse! And I thought the Kidd trade would help, but it looks like he is regressing instead of progressing. They would have been better off with JET running the point. And through all of this, i had a bad feeling Dirk would get hurt towards the end of the season. He usually sprains his ankle once or twice throughout the year, but has been healthy up unitl now. I think they may squeak into the playoff, but I hope they lose, so Avery Johnson can get fired. He has not been the right coach for this team. He doesn’t know how to use Dirk, and he does not seem to mesh with JKidd at all. How else could you explain him going from playing like a HOF to playing like a backup PG?

Dallas was in trouble before he got hurt cause they just couldnt win a game with Jkidd…but now that dirks out like 2 weeks they could drop all the way out of the playoff race altogether…by the time he gets back they could be in 10th place in the west…and if that does happen you can kiss their playoff hopes goodbye…in the west you cant afford for your franchise player to get hurt at this point in the season…they are in serious trouble…Golden state was already breathing down their neck…but now there gonna get passed up by Denver too…they are in big trouble…if they dont make the playoffs you may have seen the last of Avery Johnson…which is stupid, but Mark Cuban will blow a fuse if they end up missin out and will take it out on him when it wouldnt really be his fault…its gonna be interesting to see whats happens to this team…Ill be watching, thats for sure…
