DeShawn’s Opinion of LeBron: ‘Overrated’
You know, it’s a good thing the powerful editor of the fashion magazine Vogue didn’t consult with DeShawn Stevenson before putting LeBron James on the cover. Because, DeShawn and his beard - who took down Cleveland on national television last night - aren’t all that impressed with King James.
DeShawn was obviously holding back in that session with reporters around his locker. When he was leaving the building, Mike Lee was chatting him up and mentioned LeBron again. DeShawn has obviously heard enough of that.
“He’s overrated,” DeShawn told Mike. “And you can say I said that.”
Jesus!
If anything, DeShawn, LeBron is underrated. I’m not even Ryan Jones the biggest LeBron fan around, and I can admit that much.
It was a nice win to be sure, but don’t let it get to your head. The Playoffs are just around the corner; let’s do the player rating then.

An as*shole is always an as*hole. This is the way of the average 21st century NBA player. Do little, say alot, get press cause the league is watered down with crap talent, like him. Shut the f*ck up, bit*h. We all laugh at your uselessness as a player, and your garbage back tattoo.

Ryan Jones says:
Here’s my DeShawn Stevenson story:
I was in D.C. for the ‘01 All-Star Weekend. On (I think) Friday night, I went to the adidas-sponsored All-Star party with (I think) Lang. We didn’t really know anyone there, and the vibe was a little too “Quiet Storm” slash smoove R&B for two straight white guys without dates to really enjoy, so we didn’t stay long. But from our brief time at the party, two memories endures.
1. Finding DeShawn Stevenson standing alone, literally by himself, talking to no one, just looking lonely and holding up a wall. At the time, he was a 20-year-old, rarely used rookie on a Jazz team that seemed unlikely to be a good fit for a straight out of HS kid best known, at the time, for getting jumped by a bunch of high school kids — including at least one of his own teammates — on the night of the 2000 NBA Draft. (This was before he’d become slightly better known for catching a statutory r*pe charge a few months later). Anyway, we were friendly with his AAU coach, and he really did look lonely, so I went up, introduced myself and tried to B.S. with him for a second. Perhaps because he didn’t want to be seen talking to the only white guys at the party, or perhaps because he was just shy, our conversation lasted about 10 seconds. So I’m glad to see he’s finally come out of his shell.
2. Walking out of the party and bumping into Glenn Robinson, who was on his way in wearing a FULL-LENGTH LEATHER COAT. I’d never seen a real p*mp before. Big Dog, indeed.

What’s smaller than an acorn?
Dude, when was the last time Garnett made a point of calling out another player as overrated? He doesn’t, because he knows that’s the terrain of chumps trying to make their name off other players because they can’t make it themselves. Now, if you’d compared DeShawn to Ruben Patterson, you’d be right for all sorts of reasons. Instead, you compared him to one of the best all-around players in the history of the League, a player who talks sh*t out of pure emotional intensity, not insecurity. These are not even remotely the same category.

K22C, are you familiar with the concept of “accurately rated”? As in, people think LeBron’s amazing at basketball because he is, in fact, pretty f*cking amazing at basketball. Might be worth squeezing that into your worldview.

You’re asking me to clarify MY opinion based on something Mutoni said… interesting.
I have in the past made the case that LeBron could be considered underrated, in that people who are still caught up in the hype of his NBA arrival (all the high school publicity, hacks writing books about him before he ever played an NBA game, etc) might not actually realize how good he is. But at this point, I think most serious basketball people have a pretty accurate impression of LeBron’s game. They think he’s incredible, and the numbers would seem to bear that out.

DeShawn looked good on that last play because LBJ decided to go for the win and not get to the cup. Anyone catch DeShawn doing the finger wave over his face after the stop? Fall back DS. There are some real pros on this Wiz Kids team and you’re having a solid individual year. But if you’re going to call LBJ overatted, let one of your All-Stars do the talking. My guess is they would tell you to leave it alone.

K22C says:
1. Hes in the East
2. Hes on a team of nothings Put any player who can be a franchise player in the East and talk about how good they can be. Look at Iverson for example, he was on a team of nothings and put up LeBrons numbers. I’m not impressed.

When I saw Ryans’s book at Barnes and Noble the other day, I said to a kid that was reading Sports Illustrated for Kids sitting in one of those big lounge chairs they have “hey man, you like basketball?” He said “huh?”. “You like Lebron?” I said. He said “yeah” I handed him the book and said “buy this book.” “The guy that wrote it is handicpped and needs the money. Seriously” The kid looked at me like I was a Hari Krishner. After we walked past him, my wife said “How do you know that?” I told her “It’s one of the SLAM guys”. She said, “Is it the one that always corrects your grammar?” Fuc*ers!

It’s funny how when Ryan makes a stand for the good of Lebron’s name, there’s no team of supporters to back him. GOD forbid Deshawn would have shot his mouth off about Kobe. There would be a sitewide post explosion on “how dare ANYONE say ANYTHING about Kobe.” Poor Lebron. No friends. No talent.
Mar.14 at 11:44 am
Jess says:
haha Eboy I definately agree his comments should have been directed to Gilbert…I was watching that game last night and honestly, it was embarrassing for DeShawn. Does he really think he is on the level where he can criticize LeBron James. Gotta love Damon Jones’ reaction after he hit a three late in the game. Can’t wait until LeBron and DeShawn go at it again. As a Raptors fan Ive seen what happens when you rag on LeBron…not a good idea….

Khalid Salaam says:
I don’t know why Deshawn said Bron was overrated and i can’t blame the writer since i know Mike Lee and he’s not one for baiting guys to give inflammaotory answers. Deshawn was probably just tired of answering questions about him all the time. That much i get. if you’re a normaly competitive guy, a real dude, then you don’t want to sit around talking about how great the next man is. To an extent everyone or at least normally competitive men find d*ck-riding to be generally non-entertaining. I wouldn’t want to talk about the next dude all the time, especially if my team just beat him. People want to be appreciated. All this negativity on here in unreasonable cuz most of you would act in the same way in the context was directly relatable to you. I’m not even a deshawn fan…also bron isn’t underated either. he is rated right
Mar.14 at 11:47 am

Khalid how about a simple “he’s alright?” That would be slightly less inflammatory, no?

Khalid Salaam says:
why should i stop making sense?
Mar.14 at 12:03 pm
Ryan Jones says:
I actually only saw a few minutes of this game, but I was watching right before the tip. You know how guys make their way around the center circle dapping the guys on the other team? The camera was on LeBron as he made his way through, and DeShawn — I’ve NEVER seen this before — just stood in front of him, like he wouldn’t let him through until he had a chance to pop sh*t to him. I guess you could argue it was effective, since they won, but the point is that DeShawn made this an issue from literally before the opening tip. So quit trying to bail him out, Khalid. You hater.
Mar.14 at 12:06 pm
Khalid Salaam says:
Eboy you are a lawyer right? I don’t know what kind of law you practice but bear with me. Say you were trying a case against robert shapiro. and you had lost to him previously and this last time you beat him, fair and square. and all the media and everyone else wants to talk about is him. are you saying that wouldn’t bother you just a little bit?
Mar.14 at 12:11 pm
Khalid Salaam says:
i’m not trying to bail him out. i barely even acknowledge him. if a guy doesn’t wanna be a d*ck-rider i’m saying i think thats okay. there are several “famous” writers who i think have a writing style inferior to mine and if someone continously asked me about him, it’s possible that in act of frustration, i might just thug it out. And say something similar to what deshawn said about bron. i wouldn’t do it continously but maybe once i’d just speak my mind. doesn’t a man have that right?
Mar.14 at 12:15 pm
Jake says:
On a slightly different note, isn’t it funny that whenever someone doesn’t like Lebron, it makes the news and gets people talking, but whenever someone doesn’t like say….KOBE it’s not that big a deal.Plus, maybe Lebron stole Lindsay Lohan from Deshawn?

Ryan, I’ve seen the exact same thing and couldn’t believe my eyes. NEVER seen anything like that. I think you could kind of tell LeBron didn’t know what was going on. The next shot … milliseconds before the tip they were barking at each other. I knew it was on right then and there.

Mar.14 at 12:17 pm
Eboy says:
Yeah, man, it would eat me up, for sure. But I also wouldn’t put myself out in the public eye for other’s to think I was jealous, insecure and pety of what he accomplished against me. If anything, I would be working my ass off to bethat much better the next time I went head up with him. Also, as a three decades old basketball player, I also can look at it from Deshawn’s idiotic point of contention, too. I know I can hold my own on any street basketball court anywhwere, but if I’m on a court with NBA players, I’m going through the motions trying not to look stupid. Deshawn is Damon Jones with tattoo’s, not much more. Let’s put it like this, as Ryan kind of alluded to, if it was Kobe or KG that made that comment, it would be a great start to a rivalry, an NBA marketer’s dream come true. When it comes from a journeyman player who is finally playing at a decent level of basketball after 6 or 7 seasons, it come’s off as jealous, which is not surprising, but also sort of classless. That’s why KG and Kobe could get away with it, cause they are held to the highest standard and they can back that sh*t up. Deshawn is not in that class, sh*t, he’s not even on that same campus.
Mar.14 at 12:18 pm
TADOne says:
Sorry Khalid, my sarcasm didn’t flesh out from my post. I actually understand the point you are making for DeShawn, and it is quite valid. I guess I would really have needed to see DeShawn’s face as he was making this comment about Bron. I know interviewer’s can take certain quotes from an interview and blow them up and forget about the context that the quote was taken from.

Emry DowningHall says:
Khalid: I’m w/ you on someones right not to be a d*ck rider but, if you said that about another writer, there not going to go out and give you 4000 words and a Pulitzer (Templeton!) LBJ might see those Wiz Kids in the postseason and put 30/10/10 averages up. DS has the right to make the most of his time when he has the floor but, he better be ready to lock into that defensive stance next time they match up, and I’m thinking LBJ wont have 3 on his mind.
Mar.14 at 12:21 pm
FLUXLAND says:
Khalid, you are absolutely right. The only issue here is calling him overrated. He could have said “I believe I am better then him” or “We take no prisoners come game time!” But overrated? That’s just dumb. It’s like Gilbert is spreading his newfound basketball ignorance and spreading it to his teammates
Mar.14 at 12:21 pm
Eboy says:
And yeah, he has the right, Khalid, but that doesn’t make the idea and the action any smarter in it’s context. You got a win, good work by you and your team. Keep winning and knock the Cavs out of the playoffs a few times. We can look at your “Can’t see me” hand wave with some merit then.

Tad: fair enough……Eboy: yeah of course it comes off as pettines. deshawn is one of the best 200 people in the world at what he does. a good amount of nba dudes are arrogant by nature so to some extent you have to expect a guy to lash out. occasionly this happens. for people to call him a chump is a little extra imo…..Ryan: I am overrated. the thing is i don’t care
Mar.14 at 12:33 pm
Reggie Evans says:
Also “overrated” is so controversial, because it’s a relative term. You have to give a reference point to make a judgment. Who’s doing the rating? Where do they rate him? If someone had just told Deshawn that Lebron was the greatest player to ever step on the court, then yes, Lebron is overrated. If someone said that Lebron was just and above average players, then of course, he’s underrated. Deshawn would need to clarify where he believed LBJ to be rated to judge that statement. Thank you.

Nobody has to come on here to defend LeBron, because his game speaks for itself. If he makes that last shot, the Cavs win the game. That being said, I don’t mind what Deshawn did. It makes the game more fun to watch. They are competing in the same division and I think Cleveland has beaten them in the playoffs for the last two years. They’re not supposed to be friends on the court. Do you expect Deshawn to watch in starry eyed awe as he has to match up with Lebron each time on the defensive end?

True, PP, I do like the tenseness that a goodd rivalry can create, but this would be like Brent Price calling out Michael Jordan in 96 or Fred Roberts talking sh*t about Hakeem in his prime. Similary stupid, know what I’m saying?

k(y)22c, you silly lubricant, you say that LeBron is over-rated, yet you prove yourself wrong by stating that he’s in the East and on a team of nothings. Remember when he carried that team of “nothings” to the NBA FINALS?!
P.S. i suggest you change yourself to a non-greasy formula, then maybe you’ll stop slipping on your own words.

How do you think Eddie Jordan or Jamison feel about this? I think it’s a safe bet they are PISSED at this coming out. The way you guard Lebron is the same way you guard Jordan…don’t give him any extra fuel for the fire. That’s plain stupidity.
Mar.15 at 8:58 am
Harlem_World says:
Also, on the whole d*ck riding thing? No man wants to publicly be up on the next mans nuts (unless you’re a pro like Jack Haley), but you still shouldn’t wake the dog if you managed to sneak through the porch with a win. Come around here again and your ass is getting chewed up. Right now, there isn’t a single player still playing competitvely on the planet earth who can say Lebron is overrated. If you put it out there you have to take it to him and show and prove. Nobody can do that right now. Not KG, Kobe, AI…nobody. I’m not saying he’s better than Kobe but Kobe isn’t disrespectful or dumb enough to come at Bron like that. Stevenson is only having this decent season because Arenas is out.

Mar.15 at 2:07 pm
jeremy says:
LeBron is kinda overrated…he gets a lotta calls…all he does is drive if you take away the lane, you can contain him for he is a very inconsistent jumpshooter…Kobe is leaps and bounds ahead of him…player fear Kobe a lot more than they do LeBron….why?Kobe consistently drains jumpers, not to mention how easily he gets in the paint…LeBron just has to get a jump shot and he will be able to challenge for MVP…until then he is just a 6 feet 8 forward that can jump…thats basically what he is.

The sh*t is smoking must be really powerful ! He’s definetly out of his mind ! You need to get your sh*t together Mr DeShawn “who the h*ll are you anyway ?” Stevenson !

@ Jeremy : 1) how exactly do you take the lane away from bron ? 2) if you wanted to be fair, you’d also mention how lebron has the best court vision from a non point guard since… maybe ever?

Superbad says:
No guys, Lebron is really overrated. In the history of league if one guy has been overrated its James. Let face it, In 2002, David Stern decided that the new crop of stars lacked talent, so he really softened the NBA rules, especially the hand-check and defensive rules. So what, you may ask does that mean? I’m glad you asked. Well the points per game for teams sky rocketed in the past few seasons. And guys like James, and Dwayne wade became stars. Dwayne wade is the biggest laugher, he would not even be in the nba if it wouldn’t be for taking 12 fts per game, he is harold miner minus 5 inches of vertical. Anyway, James relies solely on referees and the knowledge that he can just run down the court and go for a dunk everytime. If he doesn’t get a dunk or easy layup-he yells to his buddies (refs) “bail-out” and he will be given free throws. This league is a really sad product. It sad how dumb, casual sports fan have become. If sports commentators say something repeatedly, it becomes the word of God. I say this with complete clarity: Lebron James lacks the skills that you see in pick games all around the country. He has no jumpshot, his is subpar 3 point shooter, defensively he is a liabilty, and in the clutch, you pray that somebody on his team will step up. Magic or Jordan would have owned this guy. And P.S. If Magic played at this time, with the super-star catered rules, he would have average 30pts, 12rbs and 15 asts. I know that many of you will not want to accept this because it requires you think beyond what Stuart Scott and Bill walton will tell you, but just face the music.

hey. that is true. In a world of professional basketball, u can’t say that ‘i fear the dude’. You ain’t gettin nothing worth for your next coming contract. At least, by saying so, Deshawn could go another round on playing great guys like LeBron. C’mon.. let’s wait till playoffs.. shall we. ? Where’s the love ?

Chris says:
I look at the argument like the old schhol scottie pippen. he was apparently overrated and underated depending on opinion. No one can argue jordan was da man! except 4 the ignorant. but pippen was probably the best backup player in NBA history, no arguments. As for the point at hand, LeBron has got raw talent and as soon as he gets the right backup he’ll be recieving some new jewellery(championship rings) leave the boy alone he got skills!!!

DeShawn also needs to get more game if he wants to talk trash. Big trash talkers are guys like Garnett who have the right. Not a lowly unknown player like Stevenson. Maybe he figured if he mentioned LeBron’s nmae he’d get some lime light.

KG says:
“Superbad” is an ignorant fu(k who is way to caught up in the past. I know you think you know everything about basketball but you don’t. Clearly. Players today are way better than the players of old. Bigger, stronger, faster, more skill. It’s true. Time to face the facts. We have players that have played countless seasons of AAU basketball, college, highschool. Most players today stated playing before they could walk. There’s more expierence, more efficient drills to actually teach players basketball skills. It’s time to face the music people. I have see the 80’s. Compared to today the old players are not as good. If you think about it the only reason MJ, Magic, Bird, Russel, Wilt, Mikan were so great was because they were so much more physically advanced. They were built like the average player would be built 15 years later. With MJ it was his jumping ability and his midranged game (he was not a good 3pt shooter). Everyone was amazed when he and Dr. J jumped from the foul line….well guess what! Most players today can do this. In this years dunk contest some bum named Jamario Moon jumped from the fouline off two feet caught and allyopp and dunk and nobody thought it was great. Players are more gifted today and are just plane better. Get used to it.

Alex says:
Saying Lebron is underrated is probably the most asinine thing I’ve ever seen actually get published by an op-ed writer. Do you actually watch basketball? Or follow it in the media? Saying Lebron James is underrated is like as dumb as saying Michael Jordan is overrated. I’m with DeShawn on this one. Wow…Lebron…underrated? Just…wow.
Mar.28 at 3:48 am
Ami says:
Yeah, I’m with the other people, you can’t say that Lebron is underrated. Learn what overrated and underrated mean…saying he’s overrated doesn’t mean Lebron has no game at all, it’s just saying he’s hyped up way more than his play deserves which is very true.
