Assessing T-Mac’s MVP Candidacy
For most people, the MVP race this season is almost strictly between three players: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Chris Paul. Every once in a while, though, someone else tries to enter the discussion - be it Kevin Garnett, or hilariously, Paul Pierce - and today, it’s Tracy McGrady’s turn.
Mac’s Rockets are en fuego, having won an astounding 20 straight games, and haven’t missed a beat since Yao went down with a season-ending injury. With Houston playing way above their heads, some are beginning to think McGrady should get some hardware for his troubles.
The seven-time all-star is making a case for MVP as the Rockets have matched the second-longest win streak in NBA history and marched to the top of the Western Conference standings.
“As long as this game has been around, not too many people have accomplished what we’ve accomplished,” McGrady said. “Twenty years from now, somebody will possibly be in the same breath as us and mention our name.”
As nice a story as the Rockets have been, for McGrady to even get serious consideration for the award, Houston needs some kind of miracle to come out of this month unscathed. Just look at some of the games on their sched: Lakers, Celtics, Warriors, Suns, and Spurs to close out March.
Gentlemen, your work has been cut out for you.

If they make it through this next stretch of games you have to throw his name in there.

TADOne says:
That is a big “if”. But he certainly could take some votes from the likes of Nash and Duncan. He would still be behind KB, Bron, KG, and CP3.
Mar.14 at 12:16 pm
RV says:
he doesnt deserve it, it should be given to someone who played throughout the season as MVP, CP3 deserves it. Plus this season Kobe and Tracy have had a lot of help. The hornets have no bench, no offense in their center, and inconsistent shooters, yet they’re right there at the top.

He started strong (led the league in scoring as Houston went 6-0 or so) and he’s about to finish strong. So 4th place in MVP voting is a definite possibility.

Maybe I’m a hater but it’s hard for me to consider T-Mac an MVP. He’s a real good player but I credit his TEAM more than I credit him. I don’t credit him enough to be an MVP. If he won MVP would he be the first to do so without being voted a starter in the All Star game?
Mar.14 at 12:45 pm

Voters’ll be scared to give Mac MVP consideration because they don’t want the MVP losing in the first round AGAIN. Not to mention their schedule gets awfully rugged starting Sunday.

Good point bobby, just a little over a month ago the general consensus was that he didn’t deserve to be on the All-Star team and everybody was happy with that.
Mar.14 at 12:46 pm
Co Co says:
If KG gets the MVP it will be because of his first half of the seaon so why can’t T Mac get it for a good second half. You could argue of the two halves, the second one is more important.

I’m voting for Mutombo.
Mar.14 at 12:53 pm
RV says:
Good point russ, they always go with whoever is most likely to get to the conf finals at least. If the lakers keep their #1 spot, Kobe will definitely get it. Lebron doesn’t have much of s shot because he might lose in the second round. Boston and detroit don’t have one standout player and neither does San Antonio. I dont see the hornets going deep in the playoffs, so i guess Kobe is pretty much a lock to get it unless they completely choke the last month.

Do contributions across teams count? If they do, the memphis owner or Steve kerr should get it.

RV, don’t underestimate how much the media doesn’t like Kobe and how much they love LeBron. There were voters who completely left him off their ballots the past few years. Talk about an axe to grind. Plus everyone is under the impression that LeBron has no help. The writing is on the wall for them to give it to him.
Mar.14 at 1:02 pm
bobby stew says:
They basically handed Lebron the MVP in the All Star game when they should have given it to Jesus(Shuttlesworth). If they hated on Jesus you know they will hate on Kobe and give Bron the regular season MVP as well.

Russ Bengtson says:
It’s awesome that two of the main accolades that superstardom is built on–All-Star appearances and MVP awards–are more or less popularity contests. If you wanna be MVP, you’d better play the game exceedingly well, and I’m not talking about basketball.

Playin off CoCo’s last comment, wouldnt it be messed up if long after Kobe’s career he has an Isiah phase for the way he’s hated in the media and screws up a franchise.

Michael says:
Not really. I mean his team is doing great and that is the most important thing, but can you honestly say T-Mac has played at an MVP level.
Mar.14 at 1:11 pm
RV says:
Coco, the media may dislike kobe, but Lebron has many years left, Kobe finally getting MVP is a better story, Kobe had no chance to get deep in the playoffs in years past, so that was probably the main reason why he didn’t get any love before. The media has too much pride to give it to lebron after the Dirk fiasco. They’ll go with a much safer choice for now to keep their credibility.
Mar.14 at 1:16 pm
nick says:
I come back from vacation and its good to see this. He’ll never win, but, stll, it’s nice that the media is giving him his swag back
Mar.14 at 1:17 pm
Co Co says:
The Cavs could still get back to the ECF. LeBron has a waaaay easier shot at it than Kobe. Plus, the media loves to act holier than thou. They’ll bring up Kobe’s trade demands and just remember how much they don’t like him all together and they will give it to LeBron. Plus whenever LeBron is the youngest player to do anything its always big news. You don’t think they want him to have 23 year old MVP on his resume` when all is said and done?? I don’t know that 23 would be the youngest MVP, I’m just sayin….
Mar.14 at 1:23 pm
RV says:
I dont think they want him to have “2008 playoffs: MVP, lost 4-0″ on his resume
Mar.14 at 1:26 pm
Co Co says:
Who is he going to lose 4-0 to in the first round?? Toronto??? I thinks not! Who in the hell outside of Detroit or Boston could sweep Cleveland??? Detroit and Boston can’t even sweep Cleveland! That’s just silly!
Mar.14 at 1:35 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I think Boston or Detroit COULD sweep Cleveland, but that’s neither here nor there. And actually I’m not as interested as to who’s going to win this year as much as I will be in seeing how the voting breaks down. I just wish the League would review the voting each year and take the privilege away from writers who are obviously biased (how do you leave Kobe off the ballot entirely in 2006?).
Mar.14 at 1:39 pm
RV says:
i dont think they’ll lose in the first round, I was refering to you saying they can reach the conf finals. I do think boston and Detroit can sweep cleveland, Detroit wants payback and Boston is Boston.
Mar.14 at 1:40 pm
Co Co says:
I don’t think Detroit could sweep Cleveland not after laast year. I think LeBron is good enough to get a game against anyone in the East. Especially Toronto which is who they’ll likely play in the first round. I’ll go out on a limb and say the Cavs will beat the Raptors. I know its a stretch, but….
Mar.14 at 1:42 pm
Co Co says:
Detroit can want all the payback they desire, but they’ll still be coached by Flip and they still have the tendency to lose interest in games. They’re waaaay too confident sometimes and that’s why they lost to Cleveland last year. Their personalities haven’t changed as far as I know so, I don’t think they’ll sweep Cleveland.
Mar.14 at 1:47 pm
Young Chris #3 says:
I just don’t consider Lebron is a LEADING candidate this year because his team isn’t that good. I doubt Boston or Detroit are worried about seeing them in the playoffs. I would also think that the Cavs are the preferred playoff opponent for the other Eastern Conference “contenders.” The MVP award is KG’s, CP3’s or KB24’s (depending on whether the Celtics can beast out in the last 19 games and the record at the end of the year for the two Western candidates. If either one of their teams takes the West, then that player deserves the trophy just as much as Ticket does).
Mar.14 at 1:48 pm
TADOne says:
Detroit never sweeps anyone. Like Co Co says, they sometimes get lackadasaical (sp?) and will envitably slip up one or two games in a given series. I hate that they are like that, but they only bunker down against teams they feel might be on their level or better. I’ve learned to live with it.

The road to the Celtics championship is out West…
Mar.14 at 1:51 pm
Russ Bengtson says:
I don’t think it’ll happen either, but if it somehow did I wouldn’t be all that surprised. Z’d better get healthy fast–that Varejao/Wallace frontcourt is maaaaaaad suspect. Bron’ll have to average 45 and 15. Um, not that he couldn’t.
But back to Mac here, can he have a realistic shot at MVP when there’s virtually no way he can be First Team All-NBA? I mean, that’s pretty much gotta be CP3, Kobe, Bron, KG and either Howard/Duncan/Amare, right? How can you name a guy MVP that’s NOT from that group?
Mar.14 at 1:52 pm
RV says:
I think if everything stays the same as last year then Lebron gets it, even if the Cavs had the same record they have now, because the mavs/suns finally getting a ring would get old, so Lebron getting it wouldn’t cause much uproar. With Boston and the lakers coming on up though, it decreases the chances of cleveland making a deep run and makes the lakers the new kid on the block out west. I think Kobe is the safest choice.

Lebron actually got help, he got big ben the defender, big z the low post, west, gibson, wally, there of them were a good shooter, varejao on Offensive rebound……who says he didn’t get help. Beside it’s not fair for media to vote for MVP award, we knew they hate Kobe. Not fair for him.

Myles Brown says:
I hope the Lakers, Cavs, Hornets, Celtics, Spurs and Rockets lose the rest of their combined games and we get another Dirk/Nash vote.
Mar.14 at 1:59 pm
TADOne says:
Completely agree Russ. Mac really has no shot. He may get a few votes from local writers in Houston like Richard Justice, but no votes outside of Texas. The only realistic MVP’s are CP3, KB, Bron, and KG. The rest are just a pu pu platter for 5th place votes.

RV says:
Tmac is only getting consideration because it makes a great story. He only started to put up MVP numbers the last 5-6 games or so, i think since he was named player of the week last week. In half the games during the streak he hasn’t even cracked 20 pts and has had under 70% FT shooting, and has shot under 40%. The media needs to explain how the rockets are doing what they’re doing and Landry, Scola, Deke, Rafer, Hayes, and Battier aren’t names that will draw interest. Could the rockets have won 20 straight without Tmac? No, but they couldn’t have done it without any of those other guys i mentioned.

I don’t think KG is a candidate. He’s like 15th in scoring and 18 in rebounding or something similar. the stats aren’t there. keep it real it will prob be kobe but bron is certainly in the mix and deservedly so. CP3 is the darkhorse although as i’ve said before, that hornets roster is not western conf playoff team caliber. yet they are there. pauls numbers are the definition of beastin.

Young chris, what parts ? I basically said if no major trades had gone down and the rosters stayed the same as last year then lebron would get it. Tracy is my favourite player, but I wouln’t put him in MVP category right now. The Rockets are putting forth a great team effort. Of course, most of these wins are impossible without T-mac. So, it is possible for him to win it though, I figure, there are 18 games left, if they go 15-3 in that stretch or better, I would expect him to get serious consideration. If they go 18-0, which would be mind boggling, 38-0, then he should win unanimously.
Mar.14 at 2:16 pm
Young Chris #3 says:
I think in KG’s case, it’s not so much about the numbers as it is the way he transformed the mentality of the Celtics franchise. If they had the team they have now, replacing KG for Al Jefferson, they’d still be good but nowhere the dominant team they’ve been. Garnett reminds me of Jordan in the way he is so intense and demands so much from his teammates. With that said, I am glad Khalid said what he said about Chris Paul because I have been making that argument since a few weeks before All-Star break when the Hornets started to really beast out.

Eboy, maybe if he puts up big numbers the rest of the way. The only thing i can say , as of right now, that gives him MVP credibility, is that he’s been stepping up when the rockets stall, hitting the big shot, going to the line, etc., but there haven’t been many situations during the streak when the rockets needed him to step up, mainly because they have been blowing out teams.
Mar.14 at 2:56 pm

they don’t have have any one leader, thats the main reason why tmac doesn’t deserve it, Tmac has definitely not been any kind of emotional leader, on or off the court. Early during the streak they all played their part, since Yao has been out, different guys have came in and set the tone with their play each game (deke, Novak, Landry, Scola, rafer, tmac, hayes etc..)

the pre game motivational speeches have all been deke and battier, the bench has even played a big role WHILE ON the bench, Deke, novak, scola have been the biggest cheerleaders. On the floor, Deke, Landry and hayes have been extremely aggressive and have not backed down at any time. Scola, Hayes and Novak have shown the most emotion on the court. Rafer has been the most celebratory at the end of games, and they all fill the stat sheet. There really isn’t just one guy on or off the court.
Mar.14 at 3:08 pm

Orlando that stat isn’t as interesting as it sounds, the rockets are also around 21-1 when landry just STEPS on the court for at least 11 minutes.

And while on the MVP debate, does anyone else think The MVP would regain some of its lustre if it went back to the players and coaches voting for it than the media???
Mar.14 at 3:18 pm
RV says:
Eboy, i know where you’re trying to go with this, but the answer is honestly not tmac. Looking from the outside in, you’d think it should be tmac, on paper it should be tmac, but the way they have been playing, watching the games throughout the streak, i can’t say it should be tmac. The ball will probably go through him at some point, he might create the play here and there, but he’s not a lock to do it anymore, and he’s definitely not a lock to take the shot. I would rather have novak or battier shooting it before tmac (i know ill have to explain this one).
Mar.14 at 3:23 pm
TADOne says:
No way RV. I’m quite sure if the Rockets need someone to take a game winning shot down by one or two points, they are drawing up TMac 100 out of 100 times.

Captain America says:
Scola for rook-of-year; TMac for MVP. 20 in a row and counting.

Tad, they would ( and have been) drawing up tmac to drive in and kick it out to a shooter. You tube “Novak game winner” to see a prime example. In years past they would draw up tmac 100 out of 100 times. This year they have not done so. Tmac is alot more willing to pass, Adelman knows tmac will get the attn, and the teammates have a high confidence.

Thank you, TAD. And yes, RV as a Rockets fan, I’m not judging your knowledge of your squad, but all the “team” games that they have been winning will eventually come down to late game heroics in a playoff series/game by their best, most talented player and that, I would imagine, is Tracy.
Mar.14 at 3:37 pm
RV says:
To defend the “novak or battier before tmac”, prior to tmac hitting the big shot in the final minutes against the Hawks, he has not been the closer consistently. He’s been able to hit big shots within the flow of the game when defenders are scrambling, but during the closing minutes (2 or less) of a tight game, he hasn’t taken or made many big shots. Battier has hit a lot more than him. I can’t count how many times battier has snuck to the corner like bowen to hit a nothing but net 3 to untie games make it a more than one possession game. (remember the laker shot?)Novak has the highest percentage when it comes to clutch shots, he hasn’t taken many, but pretty much always comes through when he’s got the chance. So i have to go with who’s made the most and whos got the better chance.
Mar.14 at 3:37 pm
TADOne says:
Fair point RV. I guess I should have said that TMac would have the ball in his hand 100 out of 100 times, not necessarily taking the shot. My bad.
Mar.14 at 3:41 pm
RV says:
Eboy, thats on paper and in the past, Tracy is reluctant to do that anymore because of all the “he doesn’t make his team better” comments, it seems silly he’d let that dictate what he does, but it has influenced him. I also believe deep down he’s tired of his failures to the point that he believes “making the right basketball play” doesn’t make him the scapegoat as much, 100 times out of 100 he’ll be double teamed, so he knows the right play is always to pass.
Mar.14 at 3:45 pm

Eboy, tmac’s confidence in his teammates isn’t new, he’s been more consisten about it this year, but last year he wanted to pass and did, but they weren’t hitting as much as this year. the difference is last year they’d lose, critics blamed it on tmac being passive, so he’d try to respond to the critics every few games by trying to take over, then he’d still get criticized. This year he just said F*cuk the critics, i’m gonna pass the ball when i need to and shoot when i got the shot. His teammates have never been critical of him passing or not passing, so he’s always felt comfortable taking over or passing. He finally just settled on “making the basketball play”, and again he’s going to be doubled with the game on the line no matter what, so the play is to pass.

Why would Tmac get MVP consideration because of this winning streak? Aside from his one 40+pts game, he hasn’t be the one big deciding factor of this amazing win streak. He’s been playing better than he has all season, but if you’d randomly choose 20 games LeBron has played this year - as a whole, they’d trump what Tmac has done in his last 20. For all the hate on T-Mac(myself included)Here’s a four reasons why he could be MVP 1)21 wins in a row has only been done once 2) He’s the leading scorer on a HOT!!! team 3)MVP is about the regular season 4)Last and not least… they gave it to Dirk last year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kobe, doesn’t deserve it based on this season and CP3 deserving it more, but Kobe should be a safe choice this year

LeBron is performing awesome, but think of the future, Kobe is al(most) 30 now and Bron is 23. If theres a time for Kobe to get MVP, its this year, if he was ypunger he would have gone and got surgery, -he had more prime years left in him. also disregard the stats please, sure Brons are better but Kobe is equal first in the west. so what? let them play it out, Kobe has the edge though overall esp. defensively.

The players conference should factor when talking MVP. Where was the happy Kobe when he wasn’t surrounded by ALL-STARZ. Lebron and CP3 make their teams contenders. Kobe has made some nice comebacks, but it ain’t like he doing it every night. Where’s his first-round victory w/o Shaq & Big Shot Bob.

whats your point riverz? so what, paul has help um an allstar in west, a 7′2 centre in chandler, who rebounds, has ok defense, allows paul 2 or 3 alleys a game thus assists, come on now. Lebron has the pieces, they just havent gelled yet.

If the Rockets win the West, T-Mac will be a very worthy MVP candidate. Although, according the many NBA fans - most of the love is going to Kobe. If you see the voting on www.nbamvprace.com, almost all the votes are going to Kobe and Lebron. T-Mac and CP3 are barely getting recognized.

almost halftime and the rockets are up 10 with tmac having 0 points…just emphasizes what i wrote earlier about tmac not being the guy and everyone else being just as important.

I think Tracy McGrady is a serious MVP candidate. He has carried his team as good as anyone in the histry of the league has. At least for this season, that is. It’s unfair that his past setbacks have hindered what he should deserve this year. It would be great for TMac to win the MVP award. Imagine the MVP not even being named an All-Star. Classic.

The Rockets won’t win the title this year because Shane Battier ’s playing for them and he went to Duke, and Duke players never win NBA titles.

CP3 dont have help?!?! are you joking? they have a pretty damn good starting lineup, an allstar 20/10 pf, a very good center, and peja stretching the floor as a great 3rd scoring option………………. if you want to talk about not having help, LOOK AT LEBRON!!!! HIS TEAM IS 38-21 WITH HIM IN THE LINEUP, AND 0-8 WITHOUT HIM!!!!

stevie says:
TMac is definitely a legit candidate with a good chance of winning the award, especially if he gets them to the 1seed without Yao IN THAT CONFERENCE (Best conference Ive ever seen in my 30+ years as a diehard fan)…… if he gets them to a top 4 seed he also deserves serious consideration, and if they break that 33game streak record than all bets are off.

Dacre says:
I have to say he gets it. Or ATLEAST top 3 value. A couple of years ago Nash (my fav. player by the way) got an MVP trophy almost because of the 6 games he MISSED that season (the Suns went “Starks-for-6″ during that run). You could tell he was the key that turned the engine. In a similar vein, T-Mac is doing something very similar at this juncture; the Western conference is DEEP with great teams making big runs. This run of 22 (possibly 23) wins is amazing. This is what MVP’s do. The only shame is that Kobe…again will miss out.
