Welcome to Phoenix, Shaq
I still haven’t wrapped my head around this trade. In an increasingly bizarre sports year (Kobe loves his team; Eli Manning is a Superbowl champ!), this might be the craziest thing yet. Very soon, we’ll find out if Steve Kerr is a genius or a bumbling fool. I’m leaning towards the latter.
Shaq passed his physical, and he is now a Phoenix Sun. Yipes.
So much for 7 Seconds or Less and everything the Suns have stood for since D’Antoni and Nash rode into town. I can’t even recall the last time a contender was forced to switch styles and philosophies so drastically in the middle of the season.
Shaq reportedly told Steve Nash that he will not let him down when they spoke over the phone this morning. Steve, I can only imagine, didn’t have the heart to tell the big fella that he didn’t believe him.
Tonight, my eyes will be glued to the Hornets @ Suns game. Enjoy this one, Suns fans. It could very well be the last time you see your team, in the way you’ve come to know (and love) them.

The shaq who the miami media is calling for his retirement? the suns are going to regret this one. So Amare is playing his natural power forward again. That is a good thing.

We need to revisit the Shaq “Godfather Trilogy” now. Penny is still Fredo, but what of Kobe and Dwyane? Is Steve Nash the new Michael Corleone?

Ya’ll need to shut up, this could actually work out. Nash makes everyone better and nobody can guard Shaq alone, no one. That will open it up for Amare. This is a good move.
Feb.6 at 7:09 pm
Dizzle says:
The move isn’t as bad as everyone thinks, but it’s not the greatest move either. The Heat get the better end of the deal b/c either: a)Marion will leave after this summer and Miami gets $$$ to hopefully get a decent free agent and b) Marion stays and becomes an all star for the next 4 years. He’ll be a great option with Wade and since he defeneds and rebounds, it’ll help the team out overall. The Suns….well, people will be eating their words if Shaq bring them a ring this year or next….(yes I know, it’s a long shot, but Shaq is built for the playoffs)

If this were the Godfather Trilogy, Shaq would be lying in a pesticide-filled garden with a mouthful of orange like Brando. Nash is Joe Pesci from GoodFellas: He may THINK this trade is him getting made, but…they ain’t openin the books.

I have an idea for the next drawing by the basketball artist: Shaq on the left, sitting on top of some shreds of fabric. On the right are Kobe, DWade, and Nash in tuxes. The coattails of Kobe’s and DWade’s tuxes are ripped off, the ones Shaq is sitting on. Kobe and Dwade are looking at Steve like, “Watch out for your tux!”

I can see Kerr’s plan right now.. Go for the chip in the next 2 years.. then Shaq is off the books.. and thats right when Lebron, Melo, Wade become free agents.. I think.. I think Nash’s window for winning is also about 2 more years.. Its a great strategy actually. Better than letting Marion leave at the end of the year for nothing.

Tom says:
Against all judgement, I got faith that Shaq will come through for phoenix. They might very well drop to a 4 or 5 seed going into the playoffs because of this, but come playoff time shaq will prove his worth, clogging the middle against duncan, gasol and the rest of the bigs in the west. Miami will be interesting to watch for the rest of the year….hopefully banks gets to shine because of this.

This could be a pretty interesting trade…the thing that kills the Suns the most in the post-season is when teams slow down and pound the ball inside on there soft middle. I don’t see Shaq as a savior. I don’t even see him as a starter. I see him as 300+ pounds of pushing and shoving space eater with 6 fouls and a penchant for getting opposing post players tired and potentially frustrated. Add to that the timely rebounds, put backs and blocks that he is still capable of (not to mention allowing STAT to man the 4…Shawn Kemp-esque to say the least) and you could have a pretty interesting time defeating them come playoff time.

Dre Baldwin says:
Yes, Shaq “doesn’t fit Phoenix’s style.” “Phoenix’s style” didn’t get them out of the West Playoffs. Amare can guard nobody (Duncan schools him regularly, and Al Jefferson gave Amare 40 2 weeks ago. Dirk, Bynum, Pau, Boozer all await in the West.. You get the idea). No nuts, no glory in the NBA… All who hated this trade: where was Phoenix going by standing pat? PHX was going nowhere but Rd. 2 or 3 again to be eliminated… folks trash this move, then the Suns make no moves, get eliminated by LA or SA or DAL in the postseason, and we’re back here saying Phoenix should have made a move when they had the chance. scared money don’t make money.
Feb.6 at 8:34 pm
The Best Yet says:
Eboy, a comment from you would help me swallow this. This is the dumbest move ever. Shaq wont bring anything to PHX, unless the lapse in the season till now was just to stage a dramatic comeback now..or whatever. Marion will see that he really aint nuttin special in MIA.

I’m with Dre. While I’d like to see this blow up in their faces (and it very well could), I think it’s worth a shot for them. They weren’t going to win the title trying to outscore people. If you need proof other than the last several years in the playoffs, just look at their game against the Spurs last week. The Spurs played worse than I’ve seen in a long time, and they still won. Amare truly cannot play post defense. Duncan and whoever else with even decent back-to-the-basket game can have whatever they want against him. Maybe Shaq will at least get in the way..
Feb.6 at 8:47 pm
ion mic says:
I actually think this trade makes great sense for the suns. I mean they can make the playoffs while Shaq plays limited minutes and gets a bit healthier then come the playoffs when the suns are forced into halfcourt games and not so run and gun voila heres a built for the playoffs contributor and theres no marion causing chemistry issues. I mean sure Marion is by far the better player but i really think this will make the suns a better playoff team. But watch Shaq and Grant hill never be on the court at the same time during the regular season as long as they have 4 to run PHX can still ball and their veterans(read: cripples) can walk up the court.

If I was Miami, I would try to shop Marion this summer,to Portland for Darius Miles expiring deal.
I bet they could get five pieces out of them (3 youngsters and two 1st rounder or maybe four and one). That would mean Jack, Outlaw and Frye, and maybe Webster. With a couple of top ten picks in the next two years, things would be better than signing a 30 year old with no offensive ame for the max.

Vigoss says:
This is the ultimate “what if” situation. If Nash is able to make this team play the way it does, he’s MVP, without a doubt. However, my instinct tells me that this could be that rare trade that’s bad for both teams. I don’t think shawn fits in miami either, or that he can change the loser’s mentality there on his own. Perhaps marcus Banks can.
Feb.6 at 9:29 pm
Krayzie Bone says:
Jukai, that is priceless. I’m a phoenix fan for probably the same reason Holly is: the cult of Nash, which is the only reason people who live outside of Toronto or Halifax even pay attention to basketball. dre, i agree with you that phx was on the road to another 60 win season and playoff fizzle. BUT… you have a guy making like $13 mil, fills up a stat sheet, can defend well, and is coming off the books! yes, he completely disappears come playoff time, but this was the best they could get for him? marion and atlanta’s pick are better than kwame, criterron, and picks. i mean, they musta been able to get something, anything… better than this.
Feb.6 at 9:51 pm
Skillet Forilla says:
I know I am in the minority here, but I have the weird feeling that this will work out for both teams. Half-Shaq and Black Jesus are a scary pair of bigs, this will give the Diesel focus, will undoubtedly make for a fascinating PHX playoff run, and worst case scenario, he only has two years on his ginormous contract, and they can either have him come off the books or trade him to someone else who needs that. I know that everyone is bemoaning the death of Phoenix’s style of play, but that doesn’t mean that this wasn’t an inspired move. Nash, Bell, Hill, STAT, and Shaq is a frightening line-up (and backed by a still-impressive bench). Marion didn’t want to be there anyway. Would the other O’Neal really have been an improvement? He’s gimpy now too. Toronto and Portland have some good bigs that in most years could probably be had for Marion, but I doubt that eitherone would part with one of their key bigs with the seasons they are having, and especially for a player who is apparently not such a great locker-room guy in Marion. Weird as hell, and I am going to have to see them play, but I think this works for PHX.
Feb.6 at 9:52 pm
peteb80 says:
Thinking about it, how come the Suns didn’t go after Gasol last week? He would have been a much better fit in every way. And since Marion would have probably opted out anyway, the Grizzlies would have had the same result they are getting now.
Feb.6 at 9:52 pm
whooo! says:
and since when did shaq suddenly become a defensive force again? he’s gonna stop duncan/boozer/yao/dirk/west come playoff time? amare’s still gonna have to guard em, and they just loss their 2nd best defender in marion, who also spent time guarding dirk.
Feb.6 at 9:55 pm
nothin personal says:
He is way better with a sign and trade (Marion), it’s not easy to find a team with cap space to give a player that can’t xreate his own shot a huge contract. Chicago is not in the market this Summer!

This trade isn’t that crazy, well crazy only because no one saw it coming and it developed and happened in a day or two, but Marion wasnt likely to re-sign with phoenix after the drama he caused. The suns know they cant get past the west to win a ring, so either you live with that for another yr and then rebuild when Marion leaves, or you get shaq, re-work your style of play, and try to contend in a different way for 2 more years..Even the Patriots couldn’t win it with offense, nuf’ said..

I don’t know how i feel about this shaq thing. It does make me nervous. ickk.. and I hated seeing shaq in PHX already.
Feb.7 at 12:19 am
Teddy-the-Bear says:
I think that this trade is alright. Marion isn’t that great without Nash anyways, plus the Suns need a really big man. This lets Amare play in his comfort PF zone and frees up playing time for Barbosa (UNDERRATED PLAYER), who really deserves more time on the court. Now they have a dominant player who can clog the middle and take on those other dominant big fellas in the west.

I think he’s going to regret getting sent to the basement of the east, but its not like he won’t still have the same talent defensively. He does also have some range, and can shoot his free throws. As for Phoenix…big gamble.
Feb.7 at 12:29 am

Kobe’s finger is definitely worse than he’s letting on, there is no way he loses his dribble with 8sec left in a tie game unless that finger is seriously messed up.

and i don’t know why everyone assumed gasol would just slide in and everything would start to click right away, it will take weeks for these guys (kobe, gasol) to get comfortable being on the court together in the triangle, but once they get it, forget about it.
Feb.7 at 12:34 am
Tom says:
and if I had to guess I’d say Marion will be wishing he never asked to be traded, outside phoenix’s system he will be exposed for a poor mans Josh Smith.
Feb.7 at 12:35 am
Russ Bengtson says:
I was at the Knicks/Pacers game. Don’t ask.
Is everyone forgetting that the Suns are placing an awful lot of faith in Shaq, Grant Hill and Nash, three guys who are both old and injury-prone? Shawn Marion may have been a bit of a whiner, but he’d also played at least 79 games ever year since ‘00-01, shot over 52 percent from the floor the past three years, and could guard every position on the floor while grappbing 10 rebounds a game and shooting 35 percent from three. Steve Kerr just shot himself in the head.
Feb.7 at 12:37 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Miami should turn around TOMORROW and trade Marion to the Warriors for Harrington, Pietrus, Patrick O’Bryant and Brandon Wright (the equivalent of two lottery picks). It works under the cap, and sends Marion right back to a Western playoff team. He’d be sick in Nellie’s system.
Feb.7 at 12:40 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Or they could trade Marion to THE LAKERS for Odom and Ariza. How ridiculous would that starting five be? Fish, Mamba, Matrix, Gasol and Bynum? L.O. always seemed happier in South Beach anyway.
Feb.7 at 12:42 am
Krayzie Bone says:
Russ, Nash has a back problem, but he misses less than 10 games a year. The only time he didn’t a significant potion of time in a season was when he racked up the DNP-CDs at the start of his career (except possibly 99-00)
Feb.7 at 12:43 am
Russ Bengtson says:
The Rockets could send Scola, Bonzi, Mike James and Kirk Snyder. Miami is riding HIGH right now. Pat Riley is a f*cking genius.
Feb.7 at 12:44 am
Russ Bengtson says:
Krayzie: True, but he continues to log crazy minutes and is absolutely going to break down one of these days. Their window is only open a crack, and this move just knocked one of the supports out.
Feb.7 at 12:46 am
Tom says:
Yeah but Russ, in those big playoff games against the spurs, was Marion that effective? And nash, hill, and shaq are all gonna leave/retire around the same time which will allow them to rebuild around STAT, because they should have huge cap space when that day comes, as opposed to being locked in to whatever long-term deal Marion was gonna get this summer
Feb.7 at 12:49 am
Russ Bengtson says:
A lot of people seem to think that, had Stoudemire and Diaw not been suspended last year, they would have won the series against the Spurs last year. Had that happened, they likely would have won the NBA championship. Does a championship team make this move? HELL no. I talked to a wide variety of people tonight about this deal, including players and national writers, and NO ONE thought it made sense for the Suns. Not one person.

It looks like it was the owner who made it happen, according to the above article. I am skeptical at best, until I see reason to believe otherwise

J-Smoove says:
how come nobody is talkin bout whether or not this trade will help the heat
Feb.7 at 1:31 am
Krayzie Bone says:
J-Smoove, because it is forgone that it will (Matrix is better than Shaq out). The other reason is because it doesn’t matter what the matrix brings to Miami, because they are done this year

I love that Sarver dumped Kurt Thomas because he didn’t want to pay the luxury tax…then took on Shaq. D’Antoni must be pulling his mustache out.

Krayzie Bone says:
Like the only shaq that would fit this team is Orlando Magic Shaq. Even Lakers shaq, while amazing, wouldn’t fit properly (of course you wouldn’t mind changing for him but he still wouldn’t fit).
Feb.7 at 1:45 am
Krayzie Bone says:
I saw Shaq play at Maple Leaf Gardens (when it was still a functional building and there was no ACC). He was slow then. He was always the last guy in the play, and those laker teams weren’t burning rubber.

It’s pretty amazing that the best two trades Riles has made as Heat president have been:
1. Trading for Shaq.
2. Trading Shaq.

matt the jazz fan says:
Anything that makes a co-contender for the Western crown significantly weaker - think Shaq can come out and gaurd Mehmet’s threes or Booze’s drives? - works for me. Too bad about Phoenix’s style, though… I would have tried to get Josh Smith and change for Marion.

shaq may not be the most dominant player in NBA history but he’s the funniest. I’d like to see the big guy give the suns everything he has left. They will still contend.
Feb.7 at 10:19 am
1hush D says:
This trade sucks but perhaps it will work out for the suns on defense because the suns will score while Shaq stands underneath the hoop at the other end waiting to block and rebound on the following possession. What a sad, sad trifecta. The Richardson trade, the Gasol giveaway and the Marion misappropriation. The suns should have sent Marion to Detroit for Prince.
Feb.7 at 10:34 am
Jukai says:
Nash had ten TOs cause seven of them came from Chris Paul stripping the ball from Nash. Chris Paul has EVERYTHING that makes a point guard great, except for being clutch… the guy tried three times to win the game and failed, and finally gave it up to Peja. Still, I REALLY liked the way the Suns played. They had a renewed energy. I think getting rid of Marion was a great move. I think Marion hogged the ball, took shots away from Marion and Barbosa and Bell, and caused havok in the locker room. Marion was a cancer. Unfortunately, Shaq ain’t the chemo I’d have gotten…
Feb.7 at 10:35 am
Jukai says:
Honestly, I can think of thirty different trades for Marion that are better than the Shaq deal. I said to myself “well, NASH is on the team. He can make this work…” and then I saw Nash get obliterated by Paul for 50 minutes. Rough.
Feb.7 at 10:54 am
Stewie Griffin says:
I stand by my belief that Shaq, at this point of his career, needs some kind of motivation to gear up and this trade might just be what he needed…and I’m not even a Shaq fan. His joints aren’t getting any younger and he won’t be scoring 30 night after night like he used to, but the perspective of giving a franchise his first championship might add fuel to his tank. Kerr seems to be a clever man who knows what he’s doing, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.
Feb.7 at 11:52 am
maio says:
Marion was the best player on that team even with that funny release of his.
Shaq has never given anybody his all and even if he does so this time around it’s not enough.
Feb.7 at 3:12 pm
RedRum says:
one question… why didn’t the Suns trade marion for Gasol???? Pau wanted out, marion wanted out, they both make the same money, the Grizzlies get an expiring contract, the suns get Pau. how did not anyone see that???
Feb.7 at 3:21 pm
Mike says:
When i heard shaq to the suns the first thing i thought was wow they finally figured it out you cant win with just an up and down game, but i think their team got worse. They gave away their best defensive person on the team who could score and create for himself for shaq. What this means is when clutch time come shaqs on the bench because he cant hit free throws. He going to slow them down. He is not going to want to be a thrid option on a team he is to proud of a man. I think the suns slipped up here because they tried to keep up with the lakers. Remember just because they got shaq doesnt make them a better defensive team. They still have Staudomire who doesnt play D. When it comes to the lakers Shaq can only gaurd one either bynum or gasol not both. They still got a problem they all dont play defensive except for rja bell.
