The Sonics Aren’t Long for Seattle

It was the Commish who stuck the final dagger into Sonics fans’ hearts this past weekend.

Gerard Himself says:
A lot of Sonics fans will be sleepless in Seattle if this will really happen. Weird to see them move away.

I’m not sure why people are so surprised/outraged by this. It’s how the whole franchise system works, big business capitalists trying to make as much money as they possibly can.I mean I don’t like it but greed is hardly a new thing.

SA says:
When they leave, they should not be allowed to take the name ‘SuperSonics’, or Kevin Calabro for that matter.

Billy Ray Bates says:
izzo, people are surprised because the idea you can make more scratch off a team in OKC than Seattle is kind of retarded.

Captain America says:
That was ugly. Some celebration in Sonics land.

Russ Bengtson says:
I’m disgusted by the fact that this is probably going to happen. DISGUSTED. Do something about it Stern, you turrible knucklehead. What did you, go to stupid class or somethin’?

Russ Bengtson says:
The thing is that taking the Sonics from Seattle affects so much more than the Seattle fanbase (although they’re obviously the most affected). It takes away one of the League’s coolest geographical rivalries, makes road trips that much more annoying (how many teams would play Seattle and Portland on the same road trip?), takes a franchise from a distinctly different and beautiful city and plants it right back in original territory. They should change the name of the team to the Zollner Pistons or the Tri-Cities Blackhawks and travel by Studebaker. Stern can wash his hands of it all he wants, but moving the Sonics to Oklahoma hurts the entire LEAGUE. Let the Hornets move back there and move another team (like the Kings or Clippers) to New Orleans when the city is back on its feet. It’s obvious that right now basketball isn’t (and shouldn’t be) a priority there.

Russ waxing poetic.

Mike says:
I remember the day when my dad told me that the NBA is more about profit than basketball. It was a sad day.

SA says:
I couldn’t agree more Russ. Although Stern already had his say when he allowed the team to be sold originally. It’s basically the same scenario that played out in Vancouver with the Grizzles, subbing in a wonderkid GM and Kevin Durant for the walking disaster that is Stu Jackson and Big Country Reeves, of course. Which is to say, at least N.O. has a fighting chance.

SA says:
OKC rather than N.O.

Russ Bengtson says:
The Grizzlies weren’t moved as much as they were liberated from a foreign country. America, f*ck yeah!

Holy Baller says:
Johnny Rebel you can just suck it. Oklahoma deserves the Sonics more than anyone. You know that Las Vegas couldn’t do a decent job of supporting the Sonics

Feb.18 at 6:35 pm

Holy Baller says:
And to Russ and everyone else, why does moving to Oklahoma hurt the entire league? Get it through your heads that Seattle DID NOT WANT THE SONICS ANYMORE. They had a chance to pass a tax that would upgrade their arena and keep the Sonics there, BUT THEY DIDN’T TAKE IT.

Feb.18 at 6:36 pm

Holy Baller says:
Plus Oklahoma had one of the best attendance records when they had the Hornets.

Feb.18 at 9:13 pm

DJ Leon Smith says:
The city of Seattle does want the Sonics, Bennett bought the team and immediately asked the city for millions of dollars while his business partner said in an interview that they bought the team with the intent to move from Seattle to OKC, even if it means they make less money after they move. I don’t know why Stern or any of the other owners would agree to the team moving if it means less cash for the league as a whole, I’ve defended David Stern for years but this is ridiculous.
